Making the Most of Membership

A

s the voice of business, the Apex Chamber of Commerce works tirelessly to sustain, recruit and promote economic prosperity within this portion of North Carolina. So, it should come as no surprise that the Chamber actively gives back to the community as well.

The Chamber hosts numerous events each year that are dedicated to recognizing outstanding members and benefits community stakeholders.

One of these events is the BookBag Bonanza. Through this initiative, which is in its 18th year, students in need of school supplies in Apex are presented with a bookbag full of items to get them through the school year.

“Bookbag Bonanza is a fundraising event we do each spring. Last year, we raised just about $8,000! Every dollar that comes in goes back out to support our local Apex elementary, middle and high schools. The elementary schools receive backpacks filled with school supplies, including pencils, crayons, colored pencils, paper, notebooks, etc. Numbers are determined by the free and reduced lunch rates. Middle and high schools have different needs, so they receive a check to be used to

purchase supplies on an as needed basis,” says Shannon Flaherty, executive director at the Chamber. “Apex school principals and volunteers actually ‘stuff’ the bags. It’s neat to see school leadership be a part of the process. This event gives the Chamber a great opportunity to get to know the school leadership on a personal level.”

Helping students achieve their highest potential, teachers play a pivotal role in the lives of young scholars.

This is one of the many reasons why the Chamber sets aside time once a year to recognize educators who have gone above and beyond to help students grasp class concepts.

“Our annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon is an opportunity for the business community to honor our local Teacher of the Year and Teacher Assistant of the Year for schools based in Apex,” says Flaherty. “The Chamber then invites all the honorees from the schools based in Apex and treats them to a wonderful luncheon at Prestonwood Country Club where they are recognized. Each honoree receives an award with their name on it and a gift bag full of amazing donations from wonderful and generous Chamber members.”

Additionally, Will and John Gasiorowski with Independent Benefit Advisors, Inc and Olive Chapel Professional Park, LLC donated $100 to each teacher and teacher assistant that were honored this year.

Honoring another group of heroes, the Chamber recognizes Apex police, fire and EMS officials at its First Responders Brunch. These individuals help protect and come to the aid of residents around the clock.

“We honor our local first responders each spring. It is a privilege to honor our local police, firefighters and EMS. Our brunch is held each year at the Chamber and is a floating type event,” says Flaherty. “Our residents our lucky to have such a wonderful group of dedicated professionals to take

care of them in a time of need. Every attendee came in to the brunch with so much gratitude for the great food, but it’s the residents who are the lucky ones to know we have such brave and committed first responders taking care of the Apex community.”

Another person the Chamber and community holds dear is J.C. Knowles.

“J.C. is Mr. Apex! He researches the history of the town and serves as a tour guide when groups or officials request one,” says Flaherty. “J.C. also serves on the board of the Apex Chamber of Commerce. He is always more than willing to help out with events and will even serve as a greeter at the Chamber when the staff has to be away.” n By Sarah Lancaster

orth Carolina’s best-kept secret is out! Money magazine named the town of Apex as America’s No. 1 place to live recently.

“You can’t bottle it up, you gotta share it,” says Shane Reese, 38, a communications entrepreneur and Apex High School graduate.

He’s referring to the small-town vibe, even with Apex ballooning almost 400 percent from 1990 to 2010. Now 53,000, the population could top 89,000 by 2030, according to a February development report.

Not to worry, the “Peak of Good Living” sees charm working alongside growth.

“There’s a social contract when you come to Apex, that you adopt a mentality that we’ll work together,” says Reese. “That’s the small-town charm that informs everything we do. That sounds naive, like we’re a Millennial Mayberry. But I feel that, while we talk the talk, we’re also walking the walk and that drives our economic-development issues and our transportation and land-use plans.”

They’re innovative plans too. Downtown Apex boasts a 13,000-square-foot skate plaza, which, surprisingly, stays open 24 hours a day. That’s just one of more than a dozen recreation spots that also include a fitness-obstacle course, disc golf and athletic fields.

“It’s our culture,” Reese says. “We’re a mobile people; we like to get out and exercise.”

In typical Apex fashion, the town continues bulking up for peak performance.

by Apex voters during last year’s bond referendum,” says Drew Havens, town manager, referring to the $48 million in financing that won 76 percent voter approval. “Pleasant Park is the first on the list, and we hope to start moving dirt this fall on Phase 1, which includes multipurpose fields, tennis courts and the long-awaited splash pad.”

Havens also mentions the Peakway. The $13 million loop around town complements the convenient infrastructure linking Apex to its major growth engines: Raleigh; Research Triangle Park; and Raleigh-Durham International Airport. All within a 20-minute drive, each creates high-tech, high-paying jobs; contributes to Apex’s 18 top-ranked schools; and provides a diverse, international flair that, in turn, generates innovation.

“We have incredible resources and amenities in town and that speaks to our innovative and ambitious risk taking,” Reese says.

Residents back him up. According to the 2017 Citizen Satisfaction Survey, the town scored 89 percent for “Overall Quality of Life” and an even higher mark as an uptown hometown.

“You know, I feel confident about the high level of service that town staff provides to Apex citizens, but we got confirmation of that,” says Havens. “Ninety-five percent of those surveyed are happy with Apex as a place to live.

That’s a huge statement. We got high marks in lots of other service areas—police, fire, EMS, parks and recreation, solid waste collection, and most importantly, overall customer service. And from this survey, we also know what citizens are frustrated with, so council and staff will work to address those things in the coming years. Our goal is continuous improvement.”

As Reese puts it: “As long as we keep our eye on the ultimate goal and

New State-of-the-Art Schools Excel in Apex

T

raining the next generation of leaders and future workforce, the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) is immersing students in innovative programs and advanced curriculum. Providing hands-on learning in technical fields, humanities and liberal arts, graduates are poised for successful work environments and college careers.

Growth in this vibrant region is attracting families and students, who are supporting quality expansions in Wake County schools.

“Our system wide student population was 160,429 during the 2017-18 school year, which represents a

40.6 percent increase in just a little over a decade,” says Matthew Wight, principal of Apex Friendship High School (AFHS). “To keep pace, we’re building new schools, improving existing ones and finding creative ways to provide the learning space our students need.”

Built in 2015, AFHS is celebrating the graduation of its first class in 2018 with 420 students.

“The past few years are distinguished by many firsts for our class graduating in 2018 and for Friendship High itself,” says Wight. “First prom, first football game, first graduating class.”

A hallmark of AFHS is its unique culture, defined by

an atmosphere of support and inclusiveness and the highest caliber of teachers and academics.

“Thanks to great staff, teachers, students and parents, we’re meeting all of our objectives,” says Wight. “Our graduating class will see students going to many prestigious schools, competing for scholarships and the highest grants.

They are an extremely talented group.”

The school is noted for its Academy of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing.

“We infuse engineering and technology skills and concepts into their core classes, along with soft skills such as mock interviewing, shadowing and field trips to businesses and industries,” says Wight. “We work to address the job requirements and skills that employers are seeking so students are prepared for jobs and college when they graduate.”

Friendship students can also choose career and technical training classes, spanning from health sciences to technology and interior design.

“There’s something for every student, and we have strong affiliations with many CTSOs—Career and Technical Student Organizations—which help students advance in their careers and excel in their areas of interest.”

Alongside its innovative curriculum, AFHS is steadily growing athletics and performing arts programs.

“We have very strong parental involvement and booster clubs for both,” says Wight. “The support of parents and the community is driving our success.”

In fall 2018 the new Apex Friendship Middle School is opening and the rebuilding of Apex High will be completed in 2019.

The goal of the 3- and 4-year-old preschool program is to create a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn and explore. The preschool faculty and staff create experiences to help set young children on a positive path

for friendships, behavior and knowledge of their own selfworth. Joanne Scott, a parent of current seventh- and fourthgrade students, says, “I had a previous preschool experience with my son at another school. My eyes were opened when he came to StMM for pre-K4. Here there is a clear path to kindergarten readiness. There is a sense of community and faith. It is such a strong program.”

For students in kindergarten and the elementary grades, the rigorous academic curriculum is enriched with faith development, technology, school field trips, cultural arts performances, writers-in-residence, artists-in-residence, band,

chorus, Science Fun for Everyone, Spanish and so much more.

Working with outstanding certified resource teachers, parent volunteers and teacher-made instructional modifications, all students are given the keys to success at StMM. Throughout the elementary and middle school years, many extracurricular activities are offered to complement the academic curriculum, including Chess Club, STEM Club, Math Counts, Science Olympiad, Art Club, Coding, Glee Club, Yearbook and a variety of JV and varsity sports.

Once students reach middle school, they have the opportunity to be placed in honors language arts classes and/ or take up to two years of high school math. Middle school electives can include classes such as The French Experience, Musical Theater, Botany, Textiles and more.

Our young people have the opportunity to lead a wide range of service projects that can help one another, local charities and global causes.

By the time students graduate from StMM, they will have developed strong spiritual, personal and academic foundations, which will prepare them for success in high school and beyond. The RTP Campus houses Wake Tech’s Corporate and Business Solutions division, which provides companies— both large and small—with customized employee training in a variety of formats, from portable learning modules and one-day workshops to more extensive instruction and industry credentialing. Corporate and Business Solutions also offers Project Management and Lean Six Sigma.

Academic programs at the RTP Campus have been designed to engage high-tech professionals, with specializations in cybersecurity, business analytics, IT storage and virtualization, network management and more. The campus will also offer college transfer opportunities, which allow students to complete the first two years of coursework and earn an associate degree, for transfer to a university.

College transfer degrees include the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Engineering.

“The RTP Campus is a model—accessible, sustainable and committed to meeting the needs of the community.”

The campus opens in the summer of 2018 with a 109,000-square-foot classroom building. Ultimately, it will have the capacity to serve 7,000 students, with nine buildings and a full array of student resources and services.

To meet the increasing demand for new medical services in the region and provide local residents greater access to expert care, UNC REX Healthcare recently expanded its services in southwest Wake County.

In January, UNC REX Healthcare opened a second medical office building on its Holly Springs campus.

Services in the 45,000 square-foot building include REX Sleep Disorders Center, North Carolina Surgery, REX Vascular Specialists, UNC Family Medicine & Pediatrics and Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic. “The Apex Development Investment Grant will refund up to 90 percent of the taxes a business pays for a certain time period,” says Helms. “Businesses have to meet certain criteria to qualify, including a threshold of creating a minimum of 20 jobs and a minimum investment of $3 million. The project must contain a competitive element, too—for example, a company deciding whether to choose Apex or another location. Each opportunity is given unique consideration and all are considered on their own merit by the Apex Town Council. The grants are excellent gestures of goodwill.”
