El 5 de mayo, además de ser uno de los días más importantes en la historia de México, es una fecha que ha trascendido a las comunidades latinas en Estados Unidos por su valor simbólico.

Una de las fechas más importantes en la historia de México es el 5 de mayo, y aunque no tenga el mismo grado de celebraciones como las referentes a la independencia nacional el 15 de septiembre, es un día en el que se conmemora una batalla histórica en el país.

De acuerdo con el Instituto Nacional de Estudios Históricos de las Revoluciones de México (INEHRM), la batalla comenzó en la mañana del día 5 de mayo y terminó en la noche del mismo día. Tras una intensa contienda, el ejército francés huyó hacia Veracruz.

El 5 de mayo,1 fecha de la conmemoración de la Batalla de Puebla, y así se marca la victoria del ejército mexicano contra la invasión francesa, misma que fuera la primera vez que este se enfrentara satisfactoriamente a una potencia extranjera desde su independencia Estados Unidos también celebra dicha conmemoración debido a que las fuerzas mexicanas no permitieron el paso de Francia hacia suelo estadounidense En 1862, el país estaba en bancarrota debido a medio siglo de conflictos y guerras casi constantes. No podía hacer frente a las necesidades más urgentes, por lo que el 17 de julio de 1861, el presidente Benito Juárez decretó una prórroga de dos años para pagar la deuda externa a países europeos

En octubre de 1861, Francia, Inglaterra y España se suscribieron a la Convención de Londres y se comprometieron a enviar militares a México para reclamar sus derechos como acreedores por una deuda que ascendía alrededor de 80 millones de pesos Aproximadamente 69 millones eran para los ingleses, 9 millones para los españoles y 2 millones para Francia. Estos últimos se negaron a negociar, por la vía diplomática, los términos y condiciones en los que se pagaría la deuda posteriormente, como sí hicieron españoles y británicos en los Tratados preliminares de La Soledad. Así que Napoleón III, gobernante de Francia, decidió invadir México para establecer una monarquía favorable a Francia, surtirse de materias primas y en un futuro extender su imperialismo a Estados Unidos. Con ese fin, debía disolver el Gobierno mexicano establecido por el presidente Benito Juárez

En abril de 1862 los franceses desembarcaron en el puerto de Veracruz, y emprendieron la campaña militar hacia el centro de la República Después de varios ataques el 5 de mayo de 1862 se dio la

batalla que tuvo lugar en el cerro de Loreto, en cuya cima se encontraba una capilla acondicionada como fuerte para defender la ciudad de Puebla. El héroe de la primera batalla de Puebla fue el general Ignacio Zaragoza al mando de casi 2000 soldados y 2700 campesinos usando machetes y lanzas llamadas «chinacas» de madera con punta de metal Los franceses usaban pistolas, carabinas con punta de metal, bayonetas y cañones. El informe que el general Zaragoza rindió sobre la Batalla de Puebla al presidente Benito Juárez fue breve y significativo.

La primera victoria de México no duró mucho tiempo Un año después, treinta y cinco mil tropas francesas lograron derrotar al ejército mexicano, y de esa forma Francia logró tomar control de la Ciudad de México e impusieron al austriaco Maximiliano de Habsburgo y su esposa Carlota como emperador y emperatriz de México. El emperador no sostuvo por mucho su imperio: la victoria de Francia duró sólo 4 años. En 1867, y debido a la conflictiva situación en Europa y a la presión de Estados Unidos, el emperador Napoleón III ordenó retirar el apoyo militar y económico a Maximiliano Al mismo tiempo los republicanos mexicanos comenzaron a recibir respaldo financiero y diplomático estadounidense al concluir en aquel país la Guerra de Secesión, y el novel imperio comenzó a perder su endeble base social. Así las cosas, durante 1866 los republicanos fueron ganando importantes posiciones hasta dejar reducida el área de influencia imperial a Puebla y Veracruz. El 2 de abril de 1867, tropas encabezadas por el juarista Porfirio Díaz tomaron la ciudad de Puebla con lo que militarmente el imperio fue aniquilado. El emperador Maximiliano, para entonces sitiado en Querétaro, fue hecho prisionero y fusilado en la ciudad de Querétaro en El Cerro de las campanas.

Es posible que aquellas personas que desean comprar vivienda estén sintiendo el impacto de los últimos tres años, desde tasas hipotecarias históricamente bajas hasta tasas en rápido aumento y desde guerras de ofertas hasta vendedores que sacan las casas del mercado. Sin embargo, hay razones para ser optimistas en el próximo año

Si bien los expertos no pueden predecir cuáles serán los pormenores del mercado de compra de vivienda, estas son las principales tendencias que los compradores del área metropolitana de Detroit podrían anticipar para el año siguiente:

OFERTA LIMITADA DE VIVIENDA: un inventario bajo y un ritmo acelerado de la venta de casas han creado un mercado complejo en los últimos años. Palatine woman pays tribute to late mother with ‘Legacy Letters’

When anything good or bad happens, Kera Sanchez wants to call her mom.

It’s a feeling the Palatine resident carried with her even after her mother’s sudden death last year She wishes she had something she could hold onto, something that could bring her back for just a bit

“I felt like there were so many things left unsaid,” said Sanchez, whose mother, Laura Jacobson, taught at Cary-Grove High School. “I just realized I can never ask my mom another question I can’t ask her for advice”

That’s when “Legacy Letters” was born

Sanchez, a Spanish teacher at Round Lake High School, recently published a self-guided journal designed help people create a personal legacy for their loved ones to cherish after they’re gone

It prompts users to reflect on their life experiences, values and beliefs, as well as to record those thoughts and memories in writing. Broken down in themes, the journal asks users about favorite books, movies, food and memories.

“When I watch a movie I know my mom loved, it’s almost a way I can still spend time with her,” Sanchez said “I think things like that are important. ... Reading things about somebody in some way keeps them alive and brings them with you as you move forward in life.”

Laura Jacobson, known as “Mrs J” or simply “J” at Cary-Grove High School, was beloved by many, as reflected in the hundreds of students, faculty and staff who attended her public memorial service.

“She truly was the spirit of Cary-Grove,” said Donna Ganshaw, an administrative assistant at the school who regularly sold tickets alongside Jacobson at the home football games The pair called themselves the “Queen Bees.”

“All the kids, whether she had them or didn’t have them, everybody knew J,” Ganshaw said. “She was a lot of support for many people She was just a part of CaryGrove, a bright star”

Jacobson spent countless hours backstage helping with costumes for high school musicals and planned numerous trips for the Cary-Grove International Travel Club. She also mentored new teachers on “Love and Logic” behavior management as part of an adult learning community in Community High School District 155

“Everybody she met received a piece of her heart,” Ganshaw said. “You met her,

and you instantly had a connection.”

At the memorial, many wrote letters about Jacobson for her family. Sanchez took so much comfort in those letters.

“Legacy Letters” grew out of conversations she had with friends and her husband, Mike, whose mother had died a year before her own. Both wished they could seek advice from their mothers, especially while raising children.

The couple had just welcomed their second child five days before Jacobson died

“While it’s too late for my mom to fill these pages with advice, memories and letters of love, it’s not too late for me to leave ‘Legacy Letters’ to my own, hopefully providing them a sense of relief and a ticket for a journey back in time where they could still hear the words of someone they love,” Sanchez said

The journal, in many ways, also provides a way for people to give their loved ones sort of permission to move on after death, she said.

“You kind of sit in that grief, and you almost feel guilty for smiling again or not feeling sad,” she said

“I feel if you have that written down and a loved one is telling you to continue following your dreams and follow in my footsteps, it will help you move forward with that grieving process. ”

What I am telling you is although Barrio book it has my name on it, it is not really the Robert Renteria story It is their story; you see the kids are living the life we lived back then It is a story about hope and dreams, hard work and a lot of sacrifice and doing whatever we need to do legally to come out clean on the other side These books are teaching our kids to dream and to dream big because if the dream is big enough the odds don’t even matter!

There have been kids who have said that they were going to kill themselves but the Barrio book had helped them think differently Other kids decided to not do or sell drugs, there have been others who walked away from gang life, several who realized the gang banging and violence is not a life style but a death style

Los familiares de inmigrantes que fueron patrocinados para obtener una visa podrían viajar a Estados Unidos bajo un nuevo programa de gobierno, el cual aceleraría los permisos de viaje y otorgaría un ‘parole’ o libertad condicional.

El programa operaría para Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala y se ampliaría para gente de Haití y Cuba, indicó en entrevista Katie Tobin, asistente especial del presidente Biden y directora sénior de Asuntos Transfronterizos en el Consejo de Seguridad Nacional de la Casa Blanca. Los procesos de petición familiar tardan varios años, pero esos familiares –si aprueban las revisiones de seguridad— tendrían facilidades para viajar al país.

Tobin explicó que parte de ese programa es la facilidad para la reunificación familiar de personas refugiadas o asiladas en EE.UU

“También ofreceremos esto que es completamente nuevo… nuevos programas de libertad condicional para la reunificación familiar de refugiados”, explicó. “Y esto es realmente emocionante. Sabemos que cientos de miles de personas serán inmediatamente elegibles para estos programas”

Tobin agregó que será las próximas semanas cuando el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) informe detalles de los nuevos programas, incluida la elegibilidad, a fin de evitar confusiones.

“Durante las próximas semanas proporcionaremos muchos más detalles, porque es muy importante para nosotros que las per-

sonas en la región que quieran venir tengan acceso a información realmente precisa y fácil de entender”, acotó la funcionaria.

La semana pasada, los secretarios de Estados, Antony Blinken, y de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro Mayorkas, dieron a conocer la apertura de centros de atención para inmigrantes en Guatemala y Colombia.

“Estos centros ofrecerán principalmente oportunidades para que las personas vengan a los Estados Unidos, Canadá y España a través de una amplia variedad de vías legales diferentes”, dijo Tobin.

La funcionaria indicó que los inmigrantes de cualquier país que lleguen a esos centros de procesamiento recibirán orientación sobre opciones de reasentamiento, incluso en España, nación con la que se tuvo un nuevo acuerdo.

“Estos programas son para personas que pueden haber dejado su país, porque están huyendo de la persecución, están huyendo de la violencia, no se sienten seguras al regresar”, reconoció. “Por eso, estamos ampliando y optimizando nuestro proceso de reasentamiento de refugiados para que más personas puedan acceder a él”.

El 11 de mayo termina la aplicación del Título 42, por lo que la Administración Biden se prepara para acciones adicionales, a fin de reducir la presión en la frontera con México.

En lugar de que las personas tengan que esperar años, con este nuevo programa de solicitud familiar de libertad condicional, si su pariente presentó la solicitud inicial de la visa y… pasa los controles de seguridad, serán elegibles para venir de inmediato a los Estados Unidos

CLC’s Lakeshore campus in Waukegan to include $15 million Urban Farm Center

Farming is coming to downtown Waukegan, but operations won’t involve a barn or tractors.

The College of Lake County’s Urban Farm Center will be housed in a sleek $15 million building to promote modern agricultural techniques and provide a diverse, yearround supply of locally grown food

Envisioned as the latest addition toCLC’s Lakeshore campus, the 23,582-square-foot grow center at Sheridan Road and Madison Street will offer opportunities for students and community members alike

It also will unlock potential for public good, spur economic development and increase the area ’ s vibrancy, according to CLC President Lori Suddick.

The site is vacant and had been used as a staging area for the recently completed Student Center at 34 N. Sheridan Road. The city last week approved height and setback variations, and fundraising is getting underway.

Besides training students in hydroponic and greenhouse growing in a controlled environment, the center will offer local entrepreneurs space to grow, process and distribute food, according to the college An indoor retail market featuring local food products will operate inside, according to plans

Also, a “VeggieRx” program is planned as an economic opportunity for growers while making the local crops and nutrition education available to the general public

As designed, the lab and instructional spaces will include:

• “Vertical production” for growing leafy greens and herbs.

• A hydroponic greenhouse for crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers.

• Space to grow microgreens and mushrooms.

• A multipurpose classroom.

• Instructional/demonstration kitchens.

“There’s a lot of transparency designed

into the building,” said Eliza Fournier, CLC’s urban farm director. “Passersby will see food growing pretty much 12 months of the year. ”

Fournier worked 20 years at the Chicago Botanic Garden and was a director atthe Farm on Ogden in Chicago’s Lawndale neighborhood The venture by the Botanic Garden and Lawndale Christian Health Center opened in summer 2018 and is a template of sorts for the Waukegan project

Medicaid renewals resume for first time since beginning of COVID-19 pandemic

Hundreds of thousands of people may no longer be eligible

Medicaid recipients in Illinois should be on the lookout for correspondence from the state regarding their coverage as the normal renewal process resumes for the first time in three years.

Medicaid is a health insurance program for low-income and disabled people that is jointly funded by the federal government and the states. Throughout the pandemic, people who were enrolled in Medicaid did not have to go through the normal process of reapplying every 12 months to determine whether they were eligible, even if there were changes in their income or household that would normally make them ineligible

That rule has ended due to a change approved by the federal government in its December spending plan Redetermination letters will be sent to Illinois Medicaid recipients in waves over the next 12 months, with letters going out to the first group this week

State officials are urging all Medicaid recipients to update their information within the Illinois Medicaid program to ensure their benefits are not wrongly ended due

to the state being unable to contact them Medicaid recipients can do so, and can check their enrollment status, by visiting abe illinois gov and clicking “Manage My Case” to set up an online account

Recipients can also call 1-800-843-6154 or find more at Medicaid illinois gov, which includes answers to frequently asked questions and other resources.

In June, according to the governor ’ s office, approximately 113,600 cases in Illinois are up for renewal. Of those, 51 percent have been automatically renewed as a result of screening by the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, which administers Medicaid at the state level. Still, customers with June renewal dates are urged to watch for correspondence from the state to see if they have been renewed automatically or will need to take action by June 1

The department has been building up staff and has conducted a multi-platform outreach campaign called “Ready to Renew” to ensure recipients are prepared for their renewals The state is also collaborating with community health centers and local organizations to publicize the restarting of renewals.

The governor ’ s COVID-19 disaster declaration, which has been ongoing in 30-day increments since March 2020, expires on May 11. That will coincide with the conclusion of the federal government’s disaster declaration

The rating not only affirms but also helps build Waubonsee’s financial strength as it enables the college to achieve the lowest possible borrowing cost in the municipal bond market. This low borrowing cost comes at an opportune time as Waubonsee is currently planning to issue bonds to help fund its Career and Technical Education (CTE) Building
