Chuck Jones Season of Creativity Comes to Gail Borden Public Library on January 9

Frozen 2 is currently breaking box office records. Coco and Toy Story have similarly attracted huge audiences. Indeed, people have been fascinated with animation for over a century.

So officials at Gail Borden Public Library are thrilled that that Bugs Bunny, Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner and more were will be visiting as they open the Chuck Jones Season of Creativity exhibit running from January 9th through February 28th.

To celebrate this exhibit, the 5pm Wednesday, January 15th kick-off will include a visit by Bugs Bunny accompanied by “Tunes from Tunes” performed by the Elgin Master Chorale Chamber Singers.

Ben Olson, the Chairman of the backyard Experience with a stated purpose of inspiring imagination and creativity in children of all ages to push beyond their barriers explained that, “this is a custom exhibit custom created for the Gail Borden Public Library.”

Chuck Jones, the Oscar winning animator of Looney Tunes and other classic cartoons, famously said, “Once you have heard a strange audience burst into laughter at a film you directed, you realize what the word joy is all about.”

His work on cartoons that resulted in millions and millions of peals of laughter from people across the world will be on display in a number of places in the library.

Olson described some of the amazing pieces that will be at the Library • Chuck Jones’ original desk where he created Oscar winning work as well as original pieces of work will be presented on the library’s second floor.

• There will be a truly unique Rabbit of Seville hands-on display in KidSpace. This area will feature a two-level façade and a barber chair so that children and families can act out the famous 1950 Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd cartoon where the characters end up on stage while accompanied by Rossini’s overture to the opera, “The Barber of Seville.”

For those who have not yet been introduced to that classic cartoon, it will be running on a nearby monitor.

• The STEAM lab will be located along the main rotunda art wall. This lab will allow kids to use simple machines to help kids build a better Road Runner trap. The ACME Drop-In Lab will be open January 13 – 26 on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays from 4 – 5 pm and 6 – 7 pm. It will also be open on January 12 and 16th and February 9 and 23rd from 1 – 2 pm.

• Marvin the Martian’s Martian Maggot spaceship, equipped with all kinds of buttons and levers which can be pushed and pulled to trigger spectacular light action, will be located in the youth gateway.

• Displays will feature the process of how a story reaches the screen. They will show storyboarding, production sheets, exposure sheets and animation. There will also be spots for everyone to try their hand at drawing their own cartoons.

Olson explained these displays and drawing stations as places for people to understand that,” Animation is really making things come to life.”

photo op where people can step into a cartoon themselves. There will also be another photo op where people can be part of the famous Looney Tunes bull’s eye that accompanied the, “That’s all Folks.”

Olson said that this exhibit, “Will allow kids to play around things in a cartoon world.”

Olson described the magic of these cartoons saying, “I have seen kids and adults watching these monitors without sound

cracking up together.” He added that these cartoons are a testament to the power of these stories.

Olson explained the power of believing in creativity, “Creativity doesn’t just mean art.

When we get someone to embrace creativity, it is emotional. There is fear. As you learn to draw Bugs Bunny, you will realize what you can do. Creativity is universal. It is about building up perseverance and collaboration instead of fear.”

In the early 1960’s only four percent of Latinos graduated high school, and only two percent went on to college. Today, education for the Latino (the Hispanic American) and all ethnicities is becoming a great equalizer that cuts across gender, color, religion and national origin. While we all have our favorite local restaurants, most of us crave variety -- and the chance to check out new places.

Many new suburban restaurants threw open their doors in 2019, and many will follow suit in 2020. Here’s a taste of new spots heading our way in the coming months.

Taco Maya

When: Mid-January Where: 365 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg Details: The new Schaumburg site will join locations in Bloomingdale, Niles and the South Loop in serving up a variety of specialty tacos, fajitas, tortas and empanadas.

When: Mid-January Where: 5130 Main St., Downers Grove Details: The owner of Ichiban will open a second Downers Grove restaurant this winter. This Asian-fusion spot featuring Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Korean dishes will offer sushi, ramen, stir-fry and other dishes as well as a full bar.

When: Late January Where: 925 N. When: Late April Where: 101 W. State St., Geneva Details: Owner Nick Smith is gutting the former site of The Little Owl, and the new decor will reflect the building’s history as a dry goods store. The menu will be similar to the one at Old Republic in Elgin, paying tribute to American regional specialties such as Southern shrimp and grits, fried Minnesota walleye and Kansas City-style ribs. When it opens, the new spot will be the 13th restaurant in the Karas Restaurant Group.

Q. Does Planned Parenthood offer free birth control?

A. YES! Access Birth Control (ABC) is available to provide eligible patients with free birth control so everyone has the opportunity to find the right birth control for them so the choice isn’t based on price. Sliding scale birth control is also available.

Q. Can I get any health care services with an app?

A. YES! We are proud to host PPDirect, a new app that lets patients reorder their birth control with a few taps. You can also get diagnosed and order treatment for a urinary tract infection (UTI).

Hundreds of new laws for 2020.

Here’s what you need to know.

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois’ minimum wage will increase by $1 hourly, recreational marijuana will go on sale to those over 21 years of age, and some state taxes and licensing fees will increase when the calendar hits January.

The changes are among hundreds resulting from laws passed during a busy legislative session which adjourned in early June.

Minimum wage

The minimum wage will increase by $1 to $9.25 hourly on Jan. 1, the first such increase since 2010. The wage will increase to $10 hourly in July before increasing $1 each January until it hits $15 by 2025.

Marijuana legalization

With the legalization of adult-use marijuana in the state, Illinois residents will be allowed to possess 30 grams of cannabis flower, 500 milligrams of a marijuana-infused product and five grams of cannabis concentrate. Non-residents can possess half those amounts.

Consumption of marijuana will still be banned in public places, however, unless a licensed marijuana facility or certain lounges obtain local government clearance for allowing use at their facilities.

Marijuana legalization will also provide for the expungement of low-level cannabis convictions and criminal records in the state, the first of which were filed in Chicago this month.

New taxes, fees for capital plan

Some new taxes and fees which will help fund a multi-year $45 billion capital infrastructure plan will also take effect starting in January.

Registration fees for passenger vehicles will increase to $151 from $101, while electric vehicle registration fees will increase to $251 annually from $34 every other year.

The licensing fee for a trailer weighing less than 3,000 pounds will increase to $118 from $18, with every weight class above that also seeing a $100 increase.

A new tax on parking garages will also take effect next month, with a 6% rate applied to hourly and daily garages and a 9% rate applied to monthly.

The state will also begin taxing the value of traded-in vehicles starting after $10,000 of value, down from $20,000.

Other New Laws

• The maximum fine for a hitting a construction worker with a vehicle will increase to $25,000 from $10,000.

• Those violating “Scott’s Law” by failing to

reduce speed or change lanes when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road will see increased fines in the new year as well. The minimum fine for a first offense will increase to $250 from $100, while the minimum for a second offense will be $750.

Money collected from such violations will go to a Scott’s Law Fund to produce driver education materials. The maximum fine will remain at $10,000. The law also increases the severity of violations that result in the death or harm to a first responder to a class 2 felony.

• Passing a stopped school bus that has its “STOP” arm extended will now result in a $300 fine, up from $150 for the first offense.

The second offense will cost drivers $1,000, up from $500.

• Public locations must convert single-occupancy restrooms into all-gender restrooms and designate them for use by no more than one person at a time, or for families or assisted use. Public locations must change exterior signage as well.

• Public buildings will be required to have baby changing facilities in any of their public restrooms.

• The burial benefit for a firefighter, state police or local law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty will increase to $20,000 from $10,000.

• The Illinois secretary of state will be required to allow applicants to choose between “male,” “female” or “nonbinary” when designating the applicant’s sex on their driver’s license or ID card.

• Any report received by the Department of Children and Family Services alleging the abuse or neglect of a child by a person who is not the child’s parent or immediate family must immediately be referred to the appropriate local enforcement agency and state’s attorney for consideration of criminal investigation or other action.

• Diesel trucks will be prohibited from idling for more than 10 minutes within one hour if the vehicle is within 200 feet of a residential area.

• Graduate assistants will no longer be classified as “students,” but rather as “employees,” which grants them the right to collectively bargain.

• Insurers in the state will be required to cover the costs of medically necessary epinephrine injectors, commonly referred to as EpiPens, for persons under 18 years old.

¿PUEDE NUEVA YORK ACABAR CON LA SEGREGACIÓN EN SUS ESCUELAS? Oficialmente, la segregación racial en las escuelas es ilegal en Estados Unidos desde 1954. En la prác# tica, continúa dándose en buena parte del país, in# cluida Nueva York, escenario de un encendido de# bate en torno a la necesidad de crear escuelas más diversas y con oportunidades para todos.

Con más de un millón de alumnos, el sistema edu# cativo público de la Gran Manzana es el mayor del país y también uno de los más segregados.

Así lo muestran las cifras: en una ciudad donde el 70 % de los alumnos de la enseñanza pública son hispanos o afroamericanos, más de un tercio de los estudiantes blancos van a escuelas donde ellos son

mayoría.

Del otro lado, alrededor de un 75 % de los estudian# tes negros y latinos acuden a colegios e institutos con menos de un 10 % de compañeros blancos.

Y no es porque en Nueva York no haya guetos, que los hay, sino porque incluso en un sistema que fa# cilita que los alumnos accedan a escuelas fuera de sus barrios, las barreras raciales siguen haciéndose notar.

La Administración del ahora aspirante presiden# cial Michael Bloomberg, alcalde de Nueva York entre 2002 y 2013, impulsó un modelo en el que los alumnos pueden, sobre el papel, acceder a cualquier instituto.

La idea era que de esa forma los buenos estudian# tes podrían progresar sin importar su situación socioeconómica y que, en paralelo, se combatiría la segregación desvinculando el barrio en el que vive cada familia del instituto al que van los ado# lescentes.

El consumo diario o regular de alimentos procesados o ricos en grasa harán que nuestra piel sufra alteraciones, por eso la La Academia Americana de Dermatología "The American Academy of Dermatology" (AAD) hace hincapié en que es importante revisar que nuestra dieta sea la adecuada a las necesidades de nuestro organismo; la piel, el cabello y nuestro cuerpo se verán bene#ciados casi de manera inmediata.

La AAD también señala que la higiene y los buenos hábitos son el primer paso para gozar de una piel radiante y sana.

Esto incluye el baño diario y tratar de evitar tocarte el rostro y el cuerpo con las manos sucias. El contacto constante en estas condiciones provocaría la transmisión de microorganismos patógenos que pueden producir reacciones alérgicas en la piel. Otros cuidados son evitar la exposición prolongada al sol sin protección, para evitar la aparición de manchas, envejecimiento prematuro y peor aún, cáncer de piel.

No solo el sol afecta, también los cambios de temperatura, la contaminación, hasta la luz arti#cial resecan nuestra piel y generan tirantez y enrojecimiento.

La fotoprotección, el no exponerse a cambios de temperatura y la alimentación deben de ir acompañados de una crema que proteja nuestra piel y que además esté respaldada de una recomendación dermatológica.

EJERCICIO PARA MANTENER TU MENTE SANA La práctica habitual de ejercicio físico es, sin duda, una buena forma de mantener un cuerpo saludable. Sin embargo, los expertos han descubierto que la actividad física también puede mantener la mente sana en la vejez.

Un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Columbia en la Ciudad de Nueva York analizó datos recopilados entre casi 7,700 estadounidenses que hicieron grá%cos para evaluar su salud mental con relación a la actividad física que realizaban a la semana.

Los resultados que arrojaron los estudios demostraron que ejercitarse con regularidad —idealmente de 2 horas y media a 7 horas y media a la semana— mejoraba la salud mental.

Otro estudio llevado a cabo en Reino Unido con 700 adultos de entre 70 y 80 años reveló que la actividad física protege los tejidos cerebrales de la atro%a y reduce el volumen del

Liu-Ambrose revela que ha sido sorprendente descubrir hasta dónde llegan las mejorías relacionadas con la buena forma física. “No sólo logra que el rendimiento del cerebro se mantenga, sino que se obtienen óptimos resultados en su salud”.

Piensa en el cerebro como si fuera una orquesta, explica. Para tocar una melodía, las distintas partes del grupo deben estar coordinadas. Lo mismo ocurre con el cerebro. Si las conexiones se interrumpen o dejan de existir, el cerebro dejará de funcionar correctamente.

El ejercicio puede, además, estimular el crecimiento de las células y repararlas. “Nunca es demasiado tarde para empezar”, dice Liu-Ambrose. “Incluso 15 minutos pueden hacerte bien”.

La Patagonia se ubica en el extremo sur del continente americano. Abarca las provincias más australes: Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur, con características propias que la diferencias de las demás regiones.

Comprende también una muy pequeña porción del sur de La Pampa, Mendoza y Buenos Aires (partido de Patagones).

Es uno de los puntos turísti-

cos más visitado de argentina, tanto por nativos como por extranjeros, por sus nutridos paisajes y ciudades ubicadas al piede la Cordillera de los Andes y en sus preciosas costas.

En la provincia de Neuquén se encuentra la ciudad de Villa Traful, con pocos habitantes, siendo la ciudad de mayor belleza del continente.

San Martin de los Andes, al igual que Villa La Angostura, ubicada muy cerca del Cerro Bayo.

En la provincia de Río Negro la ciudad de San Carlos de Bariloche, uno de los destinos más elegido por los turistas, ubicada a orillas del Nahuel Huapi,de estilo arquitectónico, y numerosos lugares de interés turístico, como el Cerro Catedral (el centro de esquí más importante de Sudamérica), el Cerro Tronador el Centro Cívico y Colonia Suiza. Destino favorito de los estudiantes que cursan el último año de secundaria, denominado viaje

Las Grutas, el balneario patagónico más importante, poseen bellas playas de arena #na y acantilados mansos, con aguas cristalinas, tropicales y limpias.

En la provincia de Chubut la ciudad de Esquel, cuenta con un importante centro de esquí. Puerto Madryn, destacado por la visita de ballenas y es el segundo balneario del sur con playas de arena #na y suaves olas.

Rada Tilly conforma el balneario más austral del país y de América, con su playa única de arena plana y #na.

En la provincia de Santa Cruz se encuentra la ciudad de El Calafate, situada sobre la orilla del Lago Argentino y cercana al Parque Nacional de los Glaciares, donde se encentra el glaciar Perito Moreno. También se encuentra la ciudad de El Chaltén, compuesto por el cerro Fitz Roy.

From COD to Science Teacher

Chemistry was not always one of Daniel Fernandez’s favorite sciences. He found it difficult and intimidating, but the more he exposed himself to it, the more he started to enjoy it. His love of chemistry continued at College of DuPage when he worked as part of a team using short-pulse lasers, advanced microscopes and computers to understand what drives the biological functions of proteins and other molecules. After finishing his coursework at COD, Fernandez transferred to the Illinois Institute of Technology and earned a master’s degree in Science Education. He is currently teaching science at Addison Trail High School and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.
