Libraries have cooked up a feast for this fall

People are loving visiting their libraries to gorge on a buffet of fun about the history of cooking for the next three months.

Different cooking implements representing different types of cooking techniques are on display for the first time simultaneously at Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Aurora Public Library, Gail Borden Public Library District and Schaumburg Township District Library. The over 250 culinary tools were drawn from the personal collections of food industry veterans, Mel and Janet Mickevic.

The exhibit was originally on display throughout the Kendall College at National Louis University. These objects are publicly viewable in this exhibit for the very first time due to a visionary partnership with the Kendall College Trust.

“I love cooking and history! This is the perfect exhibit for me,” said Matt after visiting the Arlington Heights Library’s portion of the exhibit.

Iris, also from Arlington Heights, added that the exhibit was, “Very informative… I remember some of these from my family past!”

The curated portions of the Culinary Curiosity exhibits in the different libraries are as follows: •Arlington Heights Memorial Library’s Equipment Evolution Exhibit includes Hearth to Cookstove, A Tasting Menu, Appetizers and Amuse-Bouches, Mudge Sterilizer and Steam Cookers. (500 N. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights, IL) • Aurora Public Library’s Drinks & Spirits Exhibit includes Global Gastronomy, Liquid Refreshments and Fire & Heat. (Santori Library, 101 S. River St. Aurora, IL) • Gail Borden Public Library’s Sweets & Dairy Exhibits includes Sweet Inventions, Bakers’ Secrets and Fire and Heat. (270 N. Grove Ave. Elgin, IL) • Schaumburg Township Public Library’s Cider & Meat Exhibit includes Farm to Fork and Cutting Edge. (130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, IL) Former Host of Check Please Program, Passport, Community Cookbook - People are also excited that the exhibit installations will include a Facebook Live broadcast at 7 pm on October 28 by Catherine De Orio, who is the former host of WTTW’s Check, Please! and serves as the current Executive Director of the Kendall College Trust. Exhibit passports to encourage people to visit all of these fantastic libraries and a community cookbook are also available.

people who remember using the various tools in their own kitchens growing up! And, of course, the social aspect of drinking anything together, from tea to whiskey, has a massive appeal for visitors from all over the world,” said Krista Danis of Aurora Public Library.

Stephanie Driscoll of Schaumburg Township District Library adds that, “The Culinary Curiosity exhibit has been a huge success. Our patrons love being able to view the exhibit and see photos of what actual farms in Schaumburg Township looked like in the early 1900s. Our younger patrons have enjoyed taking pictures of “Down on the Schaumburg Farm” and putting their wishes into our wishing well!”

At Gail Borden, the kids love gathering eggs at the interactive farm, playing in the giant donut box and decorating the unreal cake

wearing a 3-foot tall chef’s hat. Older visitors have mentioned using something like the butter churns that are on display and people of all ages are enjoying the huge backdrop in the bistro area that features many local restaurants and a stroll through the Elgin History Museum’s Dairies to Prairies exhibit which tells the story of this region’s history of farming.

Artist Juan Chawuk Creates a Public Art Mural with Great Significance to West Chicago Dedication scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.

Supermercado Tampico, 516 Main Street WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: September 18, 2019 – The City of West Chicago and the West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission are proud to announce the upcoming dedication of a new piece of commissioned public art for the enjoyment and benefit of the community.

Juan Chawuk, internationally acclaimed Mayan artist from Chiapas, Mexico, has created a mural that will be installed on the southwest side of the Supermercado Tampico building at 516 Main Street. This location will provide excellent visibility of the artwork for the countless number of commuters of Metra, as well as for the pedestrian traffic on the walking trail and Main Street.

The artwork was commissioned for West Chicago’s celebration of the Year of the Butterfly and is intended to convey the strong symbolic connection between Monarch butterfly migration and the migration of diverse immigrant populations that traveled to West Chicago throughout its history, and the opportunity to celebrate One West Chicago through art. Additionally, the mural captures the transformative beauty of butterflies and the need to appreciate and nurture these important pollinators. Since he signed the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge in 2017, Mayor Ruben Pineda has been a vocal supporter of Mon-

arch conservation.

“This piece of art is yet another statement of West Chicago’s strong commitment to the arts, community diversity, citywide beautification, and Monarch conservation,” said Mayor Pineda. “We are grateful to the Ocampo family, owners of Supermercado Tampico, for hosting this installation on their building and for their overall enthusiasm for this project.”

About the Artist

Juan Chawuk’s work is featured in the Galeria MUY, located in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas Mexico, which states on its website, “One of the handful of internationally acclaimed Mayan artists from Chiapas, Juan Chawuk has developed a unique figurative style in his painting and murals, and, in the last five years, has greatly broadened his practice, which now includes sculpture, performance and photography.” His work has also been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe.

Chawuk is a familiar guest artist at West Chicago’s Gallery 200, a division of People Made Visible, where his large vibrant murals on canvas tarp transform an entire wall. He also collaborates with the Mexican Cultural

Center DuPage through its partnership with the National Museum of Mexican Art, and spent time in West Chicago in 2016 working with children and families to create the iconic letters which spell W E S T C H I C A G O, installed at Gallery 200. This year, Chawuk was invited to contribute his talent to a piece of artwork for the upcoming Frida Kahlo exhibition opening in June 2020 at the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage.

He has been featured in many area publications as well as appearing as a guest on the Frank Fontana Show on WGN Radio.

“It is exciting to have an artist of Juan’s caliber contributing to our community’s sense of place through this magnificent piece of art,” said Mayor Pineda. “While he has returned to Mexico and will not be joining us for the dedication on October 12th, his connection to West Chicago runs deep and we will look forward to welcoming him back soon.”

The Commission hopes the community comes out to celebrate the dedication of this new piece of public art at Supermercado Tampico, 516 Main Street, on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. Commission Chair Anni Holm will join Mayor Pineda and the Ocampo family in a short program to commemorate the occasion.

McHenry County conservation groups reach out to Latino communities

Submitted by Environmental Defenders of McHenry County The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, McHenry County Conservation District and Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge are collaborating on programs and projects with the purpose of reaching out to and connecting with Latino families and communities in McHenry County.

“I’ve had the pleasure of attending monthly meetings of Hispanic Connections Woodstock and The Defenders has brought successful recycling to their popular Mexican Independence Day celebration over the past three years, since its inception.,” said Cynthia Kanner, Environmental Defendeers of McHenry County.

This year, the Defenders introduced the other prominent conservation groups in the county to Hispanic Connections Woodstock and together they organized a “Conservacion Conversacion” corner at this year’s Mexican Independence Day held on the Woodstock Square Sept. 15. The event attracted hundreds if not thousands of adults and children alike. The organizations all had a wonderful

time and had the opportunity to do activities with families and speak with them about all that they offer and do to conserve and protect nature and the environment in McHenry County.

One of the special projects the organizations are working on is a Bilingual Conservation Bus Tour that will visit four distinct conservation areas that are owned or managed by each of the four organizations.

The tour is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. RSVP by Friday, Oct. 11 to envirodefmc@gmail.com with the subject line: “Bilingual Bus Tour.”

Care4 Breast Cancer 5K

on October 20th!

La decimonovena edición anual de Care4 Breast Cancer 5K carrera /caminata se llevará a cabo el domingo 20 de octubre de 2019 en Woodstock North High School en Woodstock. Care4 5K apoya a hombres y mujeres sin seguro que viven en el condado de McHenry y necesitan exámenes de detección del cáncer de mama, educación y servicios preventivos. Estos servicios son a través de la Clínica Family Health Partnership en la cual organiza el evento. Se cobra a los pacientes en una escala móvil de tarifas, sin embargo, nadie es rechazado por no poder pagar.

Se sabe que las personas sin seguro médico se demoran en obtener la atención médica y los exámenes necesarios debido al costo y la clínica tiene como objetivo abordar esto. La clínica atiende a mujeres latinas sin seguro a través de su programa llamado Celebremos La Vida, que se realiza mensualmente y ofrece exámenes de detección de cáncer de seno, educación y servicios preventivos durante una sesión de un día. Care4 5K es una forma adicional de recaudar fondos para los servicios de cáncer de seno en la clínica.

CHAKRAS A fines del siglo XIX, la teosofía en su acercamiento al hinduismomostró un creciente interés por los chakras.

En la creencia teosófica tántrica tiene importancia un libro, escrito por el británico Arthur Avalon, titulado The serpent power (El poder de la serpiente, en español), que dice ser la traducción de dos textos sánscritos: el Sat-chakra-nirupana (‘apariencia de los seis chakras’) y el Padaka-pañchaka.

A fines del siglo XIX, Woodroffe pese a sus posturas preternaturalistas suponía que los chakras se correspondían en gran medida con los plexos nerviosos. Se ha supuesto una relación con algunas glándulas endocrinas, por lo que atribuyen a la ejercitación de los chakras la generación de algunas hormonas.

Algunos autores y seguidores de esta creencia consideran que estos elementos tienen existencia real (aunque espiritual). Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) le llama "fisiología sutil". Otros opinan que los chakras son alegorías para practicar una autohipnosis yóguica, a fin de lograr el samadhi (la ‘absorción completa’, conocido también como "enstasis", según Mircea Eliade, o «isolación», según Paul Masson-Oursel (1882-1956).

Estas ideas fueron desarrolladas por el esoterista C. W. Leadbeater en su libro Los chakras, que se refiere a sus propias reflexiones acerca del tema.

Después, escritores contemporáneos han escrito su opinión acerca de los chakras con detalles, incluyendo su apariencia y sus variadas funciones.

Los chakras se encuentran en los cuerpos sutiles del ser humano, llamados kama-rupa (‘forma del deseo’) o linga sharira (‘cuerpo simbólico’).

En la India se creía que el aire aspirado (prana) recorría el cuerpo, dándole fuerza. La función de los chakras era la de recibir, acumular y distribuir esos aires.

Los chakras se describen alineados desde la base de la columna vertebral, o, más exactamente en un nadi central a lo largo del raquis y hasta la mollera o vértex, llamada abadhuti. En el chakra muladhara (en el ano) yacería dormida la serpiente Kundalini.

El propósito del yoga tántrico es elevar esta serpiente invisible a través del canal central pasando por los chakras, hasta lograr que se una con Brahman (el Dios abstracto) en el chakra superior.

En el marco de la teosofía (creencia esotérica occidental contemporánea) se considera que los chakras no son seis sino siete, siendo el séptimo el sajasra-ara (‘mil-rayos’), con la forma de una flor de loto invertida, que se encuentra en la cabeza. Este, por ser el último, se considera a veces el más importante o a veces el menos importante.

A cada chakra se le asignaría un color; son visualizados como flores de loto con distinta cantidad de pétalos en cada chakra. Cada uno de estos centros se asemejaría a una flor abierta y poseería ciertos colores.

Asignar los siete colores de la luz visible a los siete chakras, y en el mismo orden en el que aparecen en el espectro (rojo para el primer chakra, naranja para el segundo, amarillo para el tercero, etc.) es una mera conjetura occidental que no tiene base alguna en la tradición yóguica o tántrica, ni en la experiencia que mencionan los yoguis, ni en las representaciones pictóricas tradicionales de Oriente.

O say, ¿cuándo será suficiente tu fe en nosotros para que descubras el fulgor de nuestros ojos en los tuyos? ¿Cuándo nos verás como todo un uno en este país que es uno y que todos saludamos con orgullo? ¿Y cuándo derribarás las murallas que nos separan de ti, en vez de levantar nuevos muros?

O say, ¿cuándo nos creerás, al jurar con la mano sobre el corazón, que tenemos una fe inquebrantable en esas franjas y estrellas que ondean radiantes bajo un mismo cielo por sobre nuestras mismas escuelas, iglesias y campos de béisbol?

Richard Blanco is the fifth presidential inaugural poet in U.S. history — the youngest, first Latino, immigrant and gay person to serve in such a role. Born in Madrid to Cuban exile parents, the negotiation of cultural identity and place characterize his work.
