Cuando dos policías de Libertyville se sentaron frente a ella en una sala de espera de un hospital, Danya Vázquez dudó de su elección.

La chica de 24 años residente de Round Lake, quien usó heroína por dos años, quería limpiarse y buscaba alivio para sus dolorosos síntomas de abstinencia. Cuando una enfermera le dijo que la policía ofrecía un programa que podía ayudarla, Vázquez — miserable y fuera de sí — acordó hablar con los oficiales.

“When I first saw the cops I was afraid, because I still had paraphernalia on me,” she said. “I was actually scared that I was going to get in trouble. It actually hit me that, ‘These are not my friends.’”

But the officers asked her to trust them, which Vazquez did. She turned in her plastic bags and straws with drug residue, and two days later, police secured her a spot in an inpatient drug treatment program in Lake Villa, where she spent 45 days starting in late October.

She now lives in a halfway house in Waukegan, works as a receptionist and, for the first time in a long time, feels there is hope for her.

“I am very grateful for those cops coming to talk to me, because at that point in my life, I wanted to die,” Vazquez said. “I consider that a huge blessing that I got the chance to talk to them.”

Vazquez is not alone. More than 80 suburban drug users have been helped since late 2015 by a new type of police program borne out of the realization that it’s not enough to tackle the war on drugs via the criminal justice system alone.

Such programs give students exposure to campus resources and university faculty, Terri Lozier, U-46 assistant superintendent of secondary schools and equity, told the school board.

According to the National Center on Educational Statistics, 82 percent of public high schools offer dual-credit opportunities, she added. ECC’s Accelerate College program is full-time with classes held at its Elgin campus.

Un nuevo restaurante mexicano en el centro de Elgin cuenta con recetas familiares pasadas a través de tres generaciones.

new Mexican restaurant in downtown Elgin features family recipes handed down through three generations.

Las Gorditas De Don Angel opened at 165 E. Highland Ave., which had been vacant for about five years after another Mexican restaurant closed. The menu consists of more than 20 varieties of “gorditas,” which are akin to corn tortilla pockets stuffed with a variety of ingredients such as pork, eggs, potatoes, steak and cactus, along with burritos and tacos.

Owner Jazmin Chacon, 23, is following the footsteps of her parents, who own a restaurant by the same name in Cicero, and two more run by family in Joliet and Melrose Park. The Elgin restaurant opened Jan. 28.

The recipes for the stuffings and handmade gorditas come from her maternal grandmother, who lives in the Mexican state of Durango and opened a gorditas restaurant about 50 years ago, Chacon said.

When is it time to cut back on your prescriptions?

T

oo many patients are taking too many drugs, for too long, in toohigh doses, suffering harmful effects.

Drugs have an important place. But rarely do we teach young doctors how and when to deprescribe a drug.

Doing so is not as simple as saying “stop.” Deprescribing is its own process, requiring caution and a certain skill on the part of the physician. Few drugs are meant to be used forever, and all have potential to cause harm.

For some drugs, those harms include addiction — especially in the case of opioids, some anti-anxiety medications and certain sleeping aids. Cutting down on some of these drugs needs to be done very gradually and carefully.

Some people simply take medications for too long: Take certain heartburn medications (called proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs) for more than the recommended two weeks, and you risk pneumonia, intestinal infections, broken bones and vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Some people outgrow their medication: They change their lifestyle, and their diabetes, cholesterol or high blood pressure medications may not be needed anymore. But they keep taking them, because no one told them to stop.

Some older adults are prescribed too many medications by too many physicians, all at the same time, even if all are given for legitimate reasons.

“Polypharmacy” is the name we give to prescribing patients five or more medications at the same time. Why is that problematic? Drugs are chemicals that can interact with one another, potentially causing all kinds of complications that may not be apparent if you just take the one medication.

INGREDIENTS 2 mangos (about 2 pounds), peeled, pitted and cut into large spears, about 10 per mango 20 6-inch skewers 1 4-ounce semi-sweet chocolate bar 1 4-ounce white chocolate bar 1/2 cup red, white and blue sprinkles INSTRUCTIONS Insert skewers into bottom of mango pieces, place on parchment-lined baking sheet and place in freezer to chill, 30 minutes or up to overnight. Break chocolate bars into small pieces. Place semi-sweet chocolate in small bowl and melt in microwave, about 3 minutes, stopping to stir chocolate every 30 seconds. In separate bowl, repeat with white chocolate. Remove mango from freezer and dip halfway into warm chocolate, allowing excess to drip off of mango. Roll in sprinkles and return to baking sheet to allow chocolate to cool. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

A conga line of Mexican food fans have found their little slice of Veracruz by way of Sleepy Hollow at Salsa Street Mexican Restaurant & Cantina. Just a few minutes from Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, the modern eatery’s menu leans more toward the Rick Bayless school of South-of-the-border flavor (minus the downtown Chicago prices).

The minimalist dining room has an industrial look with a rectangular wraparound bar at its core. Contemporary Latin music is muy bueno in the background. It was unobtrusive yet complemented our experience on a recent Thursday night. Homemade green salsa, a “crudo” or raw tomatillo sauce, and fresh tortilla chips hit the table even before the menu, which is welcome when your Mexican food craving is urging “vamos a comer.”

The salsa is bright with a nice acidity but very mild on the heat scale. Up your chili quotient by requesting something hotter, say a habanero salsa. It was hot but certainly not incendiary enough to blow the taste buds before our meal. Mama Huerta makes it in a molcajete (mortar and pestle) in the kitchen. The chips are made from a lighter, white tortilla so you can actually down half the basket and still want to attack your appetizer.

Margaritas aren’t my go-to cocktail. But, if you’re going to have just one, like me, make it the Street Margarita that uses top-shelf

ingredients like Patron Tequila and Gran Marnier. It’s outstanding. Even the house margarita ($6) is prepared with Cuervo. Next time I’ll opt for the Jalapeno Street-rita made with Cuervo 1800 Tequila, triple sec, citrus lime mix infused with jalapeños and served with a salted rim and a jalapeño slice.

Recently, Salsa Street partnered with George Clooney’s tequila business, after which the Paloma -- a one serving-size jar of Clooney’s Reposado tequila, grapefruit juice, triple sec, freshly squeezed lime juice and a float of Jarritos grape soda -- was added to the menu. Or choose from more than 10 Mexican beers or mojitos for an authentic complement to your meal.

At Salsa Street you won’t have to rifle through pages of laminated images of tacos, enchiladas, burritos and other Mexican items. Salsa Street’s menu is compact but varied, modern with a roster of appealing street tacos, yet old school enough to satisfy those who love the classics. Canelo Huerta, chef/ owner Beto Huerta’s dad, is responsible for the authentic recipes. And Beto’s role in the process is ensuring modern palates are offered some big, vital flavors.

The nacho variations are incredibly tempting: among them are Street Nachos piled with refried beans, Chihuahua and cheddar cheeses, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and your choice of ground beef, chicken, pork or chorizo (you can get steak or

The chorizo took the salt level too high for our tastes, so I would choose ground beef next time or be even smarter and go for a platter of nachos

or the trio of guacamole: three homemade guacamoles including a classic, a spicy and a signature with roasted Poblano and Anaheim chilies plus crumbly Cotija cheese.

When you see the list of Street Tacos, it’s obvious the Huertas have succeeded in their aim to create a standout menu. Colorful, creative tacos include al pastor, citrus-seared shrimp or steak, chicken carnitas and a creamy chicken number among the 13 choices. Tacos are made to order with individual toppings and sauces. My crispy fried fish (with lime cabbage, cilantro slaw and pineapple pico de gallo); chicken tinga cooked in onions, tomato and Chipotle sauce; and steak taco were poles apart in flavor and textures but spot-on delish. I appreciated that the tacos are made with one tortilla (many taquerias use two and skimp on the filling). You can order tacos individually or in a two- or three-platter version that comes with cilantro rice and beans. Next time I’m going for the wild mushroom taco and the Mexican pot roast taco, especially since I learned that the barbacoa is chef Huerta’s braised-for-hours pride and joy (you can also get a dinner entree of the pot roast).

My dining partner opted for his favorite: chile relleno. The sizable portion of grilled and stuffed Poblano peppers did not disappoint. They were stuffed with garlic spinach and Chihuahua cheese, dipped in egg batter and sauteed and served on cilantro rice, with beans and salsa.

Colombian artist brings his World Tour to the Rosemont Theatre (AP) — Maluma, urban music icon who has conquered Latin America with sold-out concerts, brings his Maluma World Tour to the United States for the first time. This includes a stop in Rosemont Theatre on Thursday, March 16.

“It’s a great responsibility, but at the same time I’m happy and grateful with the chance of bringing my tour here”, said the singer from Medellin during an interview in Miami.

The Maluma World Tour, which includes 15 cities, will bring a “great show” to the delight of his fans.

The American show arrives in one of the best moments of his career. In a short time, he has become one of the most influential Latino artists, placing in the top positions of the music charts and being the Hispanic male artist with the most followers in social media.

However, he still has many dreams to fulfill, such as winning a Grammy, both the Latin one and the general one.

“But the greatest recognition is the public’s affection. The statues are important for one to get up and feel proud of all the work done, but really what fills me is that people love me,” he said.

Another of his dreams is to be present in the Anglo market, like some of his compatriots, such as Shakira or J Balvin. He would dare, he says, to do “something great” with Selena Gomez or Justin Bieber, with whom he is compared by some.

“I would love to do a song with one of the two because they are two great international stars and it would open a very important panorama,” he said.

The Colombian confesses that, after a friend “gave him a very special book,” he found a way in reading to combat “the loneliness” and “the silence of the room,” one of the worse things he endures when on tour.

That’s why there’s always a book in his luggage.

“One finds in reading the tools to solve the internal and external problems that happen in the day to day. Reading has given me a way of thinking,” he said.

Gone are those years in which a young man named Juan Luis Londoño Arias, who wanted everyone to call Maluma, dreamed of singing to thousands of people.

With time, he recognizes that he has “lived that path in the best way” and now feels like a much more devoted and self-confident artist.

“The growth has been constant, not only artistic but personal. Now I have just turned 23, and although not many years, I can see that I am growing, evolving and changing.“ Maluma, whose stage name is a combination of the first two letters of his mother’s name Marlli, his father Luis and his sister

After this tour through the United States, the singer will focus on a production with which he wants to create “a new musical movement” in the industry.

(AP) — Nicky Jam and Shakira top the list of finalists of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, with nine nods each.

The reggaeton singer Jam is in main categories such as Artist of the Year, Streaming Song of the Year and Hot Latin Songs Male Artist of the Year with “Hasta El Amanecer,” where he competes with “La Bicicleta” by Carlos Vives and Shakira.

He also faces the Colombian superstar Shakira in the Airplay Song of the Year, Digital Song of the Year and Latin Pop Song of the Year. He also appears in the category of Latin Pop Song of the year for his collaboration with Reik, “Ya Me Enteré.”

Shakira is also a finalist in the Social Networks Artist of the Year category, Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, and Latin Pop Song of the Year for her collaboration with Vives.

And in Hot Latin Song Vocal Collaboration, she appears twice: with Vives for “La Bicicleta” and with Maluma for “Chantaje.”

Enrique Iglesias, Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho and the Banda Sinaloense MS of Sergio Lizárraga compete for eight prizes.

The finalists were announced Tuesday afternoon in a news conference at SLS Brickell where Farruko, CNCO and Adriel Favela were present.

Colombian J Balvin is a finalist for seven awards, as well as his compatriot Maluma and the late Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel. Carlos Vives and Wisin compete for six awards; And Daddy Yankee and Julión Alvarez and his Norteño Band for five.

The list also includes CNCO, Farruko, Gente de Zona, Thalía, Marc Anthony, Pitbull and Prince Royce.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs and artists of Latin music based on their sales, airtime on the radio, video broadcasts and social media information that feed the weekly lists of Billboard.

They will be presented on April 27 at a gala broadcast live on Telemundo from the Watsco Center of the University of Miami in the neighboring city of Coral Gables.

Raza Haq vino a EEUU de la India hace más de 20 años y decidió que “Un Día Sin Inmigrantes” era la manera perfecta de mostrar solidaridad con otros inmigrantes. El cerró sus restaurantes Grill Effect en Lisle y Wheaton el jueves 16 de febrero, a pesar de las pérdidas económicas potenciales, para solidarizarse con sus trabajadores y clientes, dijo.

“Seguro, esto nos va a impactar”, dijo Haq, de 39 años. “Pero esto es por una causa real y estoy dispuesto a asumir el costo”.

Una familia suburbana está mostrando su amor por los niños en Cuba. Hace unos años, la hija de Jennifer Demski, Megan, alumna de 2do año en Fremd High School en Palatine, se unió a Sockers FC Chicago, un club juvenil de fútbol establecido en 1986. Cada dos años, Jennifer tuvo que comprar un nuevo kit de uniforme para su hija que costaba entre $400-$600.

Cuando compró un segundo kit hace dos años y medio, Jennifer empezó a pensar sobre qué hacer con los uniformes previos. “Si las familias donaran los uniformes usados colectivamente, en lugar de tirarlos o donarlos individualmente como yo lo había hecho, me pregunté si podían ser usados por otro equipo de fútbol con necesidad”, dijo.

Pasaron los tres días restantes en Varadero. También visitaron al Pastor Joel Dopico de la Iglesia Presbiteriana de Varadero. El pastor llevó al grupo de Jennifer al campo en Guasimas, a 30 minutos de Varadero. Se reunieron con algunos jugadores allí y entregaron 113 pares de zapatos.

A few years ago, Jennifer Demski’s daughter Megan, a sophomore at Fremd High School in Palatine, joined Sockers FC Chicago, a youth soccer club established in 1986.

Every two years, Jennifer had to purchase a new uniform kit for her daughter that cost in the $400-$600 range.

When she purchased a second kit two and half years ago, Jennifer started thinking about repurposing the older uniforms.

“If families donated the used uniforms collectively, instead of tossing or donating them individually as I had in the past, I wondered if they could be used by another youth soccer team in need,” she said.

So when she heard talk this past summer about the borders opening for U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba, Jennifer felt it was an opportunity to donate the uniforms.

“We had always talked of going there if the ban was ever lifted,” she said. “I started thinking about my past ideas of collecting the uniforms and couldn’t shake the feeling that this was our opportunity to make a difference in the lives of youth who had so many less advantages than our children have.”

Jennifer reached out to Sockers, and they approved it immediately.

“I then took a deep breath,” she said.

“And created a plan.”

“Through the combination of it all, we collected nearly 400 pounds of clothing from over 75 families,” Jennifer said. “We accepted not only uniforms but everything soccer-related.”

Self-driving cars that double as chauffeurs were the talk of the Chicago Auto Show preview Thursday,Feb. 9, but behind the razzle-dazzle, automakers are wondering what a new-model White House means for the industry.

The nation’s largest auto show is back through Feb. 20 at McCormick Place, with plenty of innovations on display.

“Imagine saying, ‘Hey, open the trunk!’”

Chrysler Fiat Corp. design chief Ralph Gilles said, envisioning a future car that follows commands and drives itself. But until that’s a reality, consumers are benefiting from safety technology such as pedestrian detection and lane departure warnings offered increasingly as standard features in all vehicles, not just luxury models.

The ultimate goal is “a system that keeps people from killing themselves,” Gilles said.

His comments were echoed by General Motors Co. President Dan Ammann, who noted that in 2015 “more than 90 percent of accidents were caused by human error — errors that autonomous driving has the potential to eliminate.”

The auto show is usually apolitical, but there’s plenty of anticipation among dealers and auto executives about what President Donald Trump will do regarding fuel efficiency. The Obama administration introduced sweeping reforms calling for a 54.5-milesper-gallon standard in cars and SUVs by model year 2025.

Those changes could be reversed by Trump.

Conventional wisdom holds that automakers would celebrate such actions, but they’ve also spent a fortune to meet the mandate.

“We look to continue to support those industry standards,” Group Vice President for Toyota USA Bill Fay said. “We’ve met them

for a long time now and plan to continue to be a leader in fuel-efficient vehicles.”

Chevrolet executive Steve Majoros said the company is “going to stay committed to working within whatever regulatory environment may be. Does a loosened standard help a certain part of our portfolio? That’s true for GM and Chevrolet ... but the only thing for sure is that things are not constant.”

Hits during the media show preview included Toyota’s new Tundra; Ford’s sleek, restyled Mustang; Dodge’s revamped Durango SUV; and the “sexy” Camry. “(The Camry is) a must-see, the styling is beautiful and it’s really an affordable car,” said show Chairman Mike McGrath, who owns dealerships in Palatine and Chicago.

As for green cars, Chicago Area Clean Cities Chairman John Walton balked when asked to name only one.

“They’ve just got so many,” said Walton, of West Chicago. “The Bolt is the new love child, but I still like the Volt,” he added, referring to Chevrolet’s electric cars.

For kids, the show offers a “Lego Batman” exhibit, Hank the Robot, and a “Rogue One” interactive display. For kids at heart, there are five indoor test tracks and race car simulators that reduced grown men to giggling teens.

Amid hype about autonomous vehicles, Don Hillebrand, chief of Argonne National Lab’s Transportation Research Center, provided a reality check.

There are five stages of so-called driverless cars and the industry is hovering around Level 2.

Level 2 comprises “cars that take over braking and steering when people do dumb things,” Hillebrand explained.

Level 3 involves cars that do the driving themselves but allow people to take over in crises. Skip over to Level 5, and it’s a brave new world of cars picking up their drivers and ferrying kids to school.

DRIVERS NEEDED PART TIME - NIGHTS WILL TRAIN! The Daily Herald is looking for part-time drivers to deliver newspaper bundles from our Schaumburg facility to various branch locations throughout the suburbs. You must be able to work at least 4 days per week from about midnight to about 4:00 a.m. OR 10:30 p.m. to about 4:30 a.m. (which requires a Saturday night shift). Must be able to load trucks by lifting bundles onto skids which requires regular bending, twisting and lifting. Drivers earn $10.00/hr. and third shift pays an additional 87 cents per hour. Must have a C license or better but ask us about our training process!
