Nada de esto hubiera ocurrido, dijo González, si no fuera por los eventos traumáticos de un periodo de dos meses en 2013, cuando perdió su trabajo, su carro se descompuso sin remedio, un primo falleció y ella y su prometido se separaron.

“It was very relaxing and therapeutic. After I got on the wheel, I couldn’t get off. I just kept going back to it,” said Gonzalez, 31, of Elgin. “You’re so concentrated when you do it. It’s like doing yoga — you can’t think of anything else.”

Gonzalez never believed she could turn ceramics into a living, her own insecurities compounded by her parents’ warnings of the perils of becoming a starving artist, she said.

After graduating from Larkin High School, she got an office job while getting “wheel time” by taking classes at Elgin Community College and renting space by the hour at local art studios.

That all changed a few months ago when she opened “Ceramica an Art Affair,” a gallery and studio at 51 S. Spring St. in downtown Elgin. The space is on the first floor of Elgin Artspace Lofts, affordable apartments for artists where Gonzalez lives.

Gonzalez has been giving private classes by appointment in English and Spanish, and she will debut pottery painting and wheel throwing workshops and classes starting Feb. 1.

None of this would have happened, Gonzalez said, if not for the traumatic events of a two-month stretch in 2013, when she lost her job, her car irreparably broke down, a cousin died, and she and her fiance broke up.

Considere el Taking ‘media ‘prejuicio mediático’ bias’ seriously La prensa debe fomentar la confianza al monitorear constantemente sus reportajes y presentación

Press must build trust by constantly monitoring its reports and presentation

Es un canon periodístico que siempre pareció ser verdad: si has hecho enojar a ambas partes de un asunto, entonces has hecho un buen trabajo. ¿Parcial? No. Justo en el centro, tal como aprendieron a hacerlo los aspirantes a reporteros en la escuela de periodismo. Si sólo una de las partes que se pone en contacto con uno está enojada, entonces lo más seguro es que la historia merecía un segundo vistazo.

Sin embargo, hoy en día, la vida como periodista no es tan simple. Ambas partes podrían estar llamando y ambas partes podrían tener la razón.

O ninguno de los dos.

O tal vez exista más de una parte por considerar.

“El prejuicio mediático” se ha convertido en un término tan común — que es pronunciado casi todos los días por el próximo presidente, por ejemplo — todas las organizaciones noticiosas necesitan echar un vistazo más de cerca a lo que están escribiendo o diciendo, o seleccionando como noticias.

La credibilidad de los medios de comunicación está en juego así como su rol vital en la democracia estadounidense.

Esa falta de confianza ha resultado en lectores que buscan esas fuentes que sólo sirven para reforzar sus puntos de vista en lugar de ofrecer un punto de vista equilibrado.

Pero otros estudios muestran que hay una sed de noticias locales y de lectores que buscan nuevas fuentes locales como el Daily Herald y Reflejos para proporcionarlo.

Tomamos nuestra responsabilidad de ofrecer un reporte equilibrado con seriedad con el fin de ganarnos la confianza de nuestros lectores. A veces, sí, tenemos resentimiento de ser objeto de ataques en contra de los “medios convencionales”. ¿Los críticos realmente creen que nuestro diario suburbano está tratando deliberadamente de sabotear a un candidato político nacional? ¿O se han enfocado en los medios de comunicación nacionales y asumen que tenemos también intenciones ocultas?

It’s a journalistic canon that always seemed to hold true: If you’ve ticked off both sides of an issue, then you’ve done a good job.

Biased? No. Right down the middle just like aspiring reporters learned to do in J-school. If only one side contacting you was angry, then it more than the story likely deserved a second look.

These days, however, life as a journalist isn’t so simple. Both sides could be calling and both sides might have a point.

Or neither side.

Or maybe there is more than one side to consider.

“Media bias” has become such a prevalent term — it’s uttered nearly every day by the incoming president, for example — all news organizations need to take a closer look at what they are writing or saying, or selecting as news.

The credibility of the media is at stake as is its vital role in American democracy.

The latest Gallup poll on trust in the media shows Americans’ confidence and trust in the mass media (newspapers, television and radio) at an all-time low. Only 32 percent say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media.

And when broken down by political party, only 14 percent of Republicans have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media.

That lack of trust has resulted in readers seeking out those sources that only serve to reinforce their views rather than provide a balanced view.

But other studies show there is a thirst for local news and readers are looking to local news sources like the Daily Herald and Reflejos to provide it.

We take our responsibility to provide a balanced report seriously in order to earn our readers’ trust. Sometimes, yes, we take umbrage at getting lumped in to the attacks on the “mainstream media.” Do critics really mean our suburban daily is deliberately trying to sabotage a national political candidate?

Or are they focused on national media and assuming we have an agenda too?

The thing is, it doesn’t matter. However we are being judged, fairly or unfairly, means we can’t be cavalier when the word bias is used.

On this page, you will find a point of view. That’s what an opinion page in a newspaper is meant to have.

And during an election, we present our view on candidates and issues. That’s an important role of the media that we do not shrink from nor apologize for. But the page is also a home for differing opinions, readers and columnists alike.

We work hard to provide all sides an opportunity to state their views.

It’s clear, though, that we, like our national brethren, need to continually monitor our news headlines, story selection and word choice.

We, like our readers, need to also monitor our news sources and be sure what we print is not tainted by bias and point it out when it is.

On the flip side, we need to continue to be a voice in the communities we serve.

We aim to earn your trust by listening more, engaging you more and keeping in mind that our suburban readers represent a variety of viewpoints.

La temida gastroenteritis está causando estragos en las familias (Washington Post) — Una vez que el virus ataca, los ataques a menudo son brutales. El estómago e intestinos se inflaman. If all of this sounds familiar to those of you who were laid viciously low recently, it’s because the arrival of cold weather usually coincides with an increase in one of winter’s most dreaded horrors: norovirus.

Although norovirus is often referred to, incorrectly, as stomach flu, it has nothing to do with influenza, which is a respiratory virus.

Classes were canceled at St. Charles East High School Jan. 10 and Jan. 11, and all of District 303’s 17 schools were being cleaned with bleach after a widespread stomach virus caused hundreds of absences at the high school, district officials said.

About 800 of St. Charles East’s 2,000 students missed class Jan. 9.

The majority of those reported symptoms of a stomach virus — possibly norovirus, said Jim Blaney, District 303’s director of school and community relations.

Norovirus is typically spread through vomit and stool. People become sick by eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus, by touching contaminated surfaces or objects, and then putting their fingers to their mouth, or by caring for or sharing food or eating utensils with a sick person. Most people get better in one to three days.

El gobernador del Banco de México ha advertido que Donald Trump podría ser una “película de terror” para la nación. Mexican economy faces tough 2017 even without wall

ank of Mexico’s governor has warned that Donald Trump could be a “horror film” for the nation.

Analysts say the country’s economy is in for a nightmare even if the incoming president doesn’t build that wall or ball up NAFTA. Surely, Trump’s ability to alter relations between the nations will play a major role in how Mexico’s economy performs in 2017, and Trump said that General Motors should face a hefty tariff for exporting cars from Mexico.

But the country had its work cut out for itself even before he prevailed, as problems from a weakening currency to faster inflation look certain to deliver a third straight year of slowing growth.

Economists forecast gross domestic product will expand just 1.7 percent this year, according to the latest surveys from Banco de Mexico and Citi/ Banamex, as anticipated rate increases weigh on borrowing and spending.

That’d be the slowest since the 1.4 percent achieved in 2013.

“It’s going to be a very difficult year for policymakers,” said Benito Berber, the senior economist for Latin America at Nomura Holdings Inc. in New York.

“The central bank will have to navigate a lot of different shocks, external and internal.”

While forecasts are more dire at Credit Suisse Group AG and Bank of America Corp. — where economists anticipate growth could be the slowest since the height of the financial crisis — any threat to the North American Free Trade Agreement, would make these seem rosy. Mexico sends more than three-quarters of its exports to the U.S. and ran a trade surplus of about $60 billion in 2015, accounting for more than 5 percent of economic output.

Schaumburg is no slouch when it comes to ethnic restaurants. Diners with a taste for Italian, Greek, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Indian or Chinese needn’t look far to find their favorite cuisine. So Gong Dong Dubu Tofu & BBQ’s recent arrival on the Schaumburg dining scene adds Korean to the mix, allowing consumers to familiarize themselves with or to be reacquainted with some of that region’s authentic dishes.

Once you settle into the restaurant’s comfortable booth seating, you’ll notice the decor is understated but modern. Large, eye-catching food close-ups hang on the walls.

So Gong Dong’s menu offers plenty of ingredient choices plus the option to select the level of heat: plain, less spicy, regular, spicy and no-holds-barred spicy.

Unsure about what to order? Don’t be shy about asking the knowledgeable staff for suggestions and explanations on how the food is prepared (the kitchen will try to accommodate diners with food allergies). But be patient as things can get lost in translation.

Prices at the family-friendly venue are modest and fall in the range of $10 to $13

at lunch and $14 to $19 at dinner. Complimentary hot tea worked well to take the edge off the frigid winter temperatures.

A recent meal started with nine halfmoon-shaped, lightly fried dumplings stuffed with minced vegetables and pork and served with a mild sweet-and-sour dipping sauce on the side. As an alternative, diners seeking to minimize their fat intake can order their dumplings boiled.

My dining partner and I shared a crisp, flour-based Korean-style seafood pancake stuffed with scallions, shrimp and octopus.

The octopus was a bit chewier than expected.

The pork bulgogi bento, a delicious Korean staple, featured thin, tender slices of pork in a mildly seasoned marinade. Small servings in the bento box, available for weekday lunches, included small sushi rolls with cucumber, surimi and a scoop of fried rice, plus sweet corn and two dumplings. All-in-all, it was a palate-pleasing dish — good eating for both adventuresome newbies as well as those familiar with the cuisine.

Because my manual dexterity isn’t what it used to be, I traded my chopsticks for a fork.

But even that wasn’t the full solution to the oversized pieces of pork. I asked my server for

a knife in order to reduce the pork to bite-size pieces. With no knives to be had, So Gong Dong responded quickly by providing kitchen shears.

To get the full dining experience, try the kimchi, a traditional fermented Korean side dish made of cabbage with chili seasoning.

Seven other side dishes were brought to our table, including fish cake, zucchini, sprouts and a warm soup with noodles, which our server described as “egg soup.”

Given the quantity of food served, leftovers are almost a certainty.

Looking ahead to a return visit, my plan is to sample another traditional entree: soft Korean tofu known as Soondubu Jjigae. Patrons describe it as a spicy, comforting and bubbling bowl of flavorful broth.

Though So Gong Dong doesn’t offer dessert, the restaurant’s attentive service and delicious food will have us returning soon.

‘Star Wars’ actor did not hide his Mexican accent — and Latinos heard it loud and clear (Washington Post) — When the newest “Star Wars” movie came out in theaters, Perla Nation insisted on waiting to see it with her father, after the holidays. He was by no means a fan of the saga, and neither was she. But the 27-year-old from San Diego had a feeling the movie would resonate with her father, a landscaper who immigrated to the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico, in the early 1980s.

As they sat in the movie theater, the father and daughter watched as one of the main characters, an intelligence officer with the Alliance named Captain Cassian Andor, appeared on the screen.

Nation’s father, Pablo Perez, nudged her as soon as he heard the actor, Diego Luna, speak.

“He has a heavy accent,” Perez uttered to his daughter.

After the movie, as they walked to their car, Perez turned to his daughter and said, once more, “Did you notice that he had an accent?”

“Yeah, Dad,” Nation responded, “just like yours.”

Having watched previous interviews with Luna about his role in the movie, Nation already knew the Mexican actor would be keeping his accent in the movie, she said in an interview with The Washington Post. She thought of her father, with his Mexican accent, and what seeing Luna’s performance could mean to him.

It wasn’t just that a Mexican was on screen, or even that an actor was speaking in a Mexican accent. It was the unexpectedness of the role. There was no particular reason Cassian was Mexican, or why he shouldn’t be. He just was.

“Anybody could be that character,” Nation said. “It was just a natural part of him.”

And for Mexican viewers — and many Latino viewers in general — that made all the difference.

During a time when Hollywood films are facing intense scrutiny for lacking diversity in leading roles, the casting of Diego Luna marked a crucial step forward. It was a rare example of a time when a Latino actor has been cast in a blockbuster film not simply as a token Latino character but as a leading role with no obvious ties to Latino culture.

A study released in February from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and

Journalism found that Latinos are among the least represented in speaking roles in film and television. Out of more than 11,000 speaking characters surveyed in film and TV, 5.8 percent were Hispanic or Latino, even though Latinos make up 17.4 percent of the U.S. population.

Meanwhile, minorities — particularly Latinos — are the fastest growing movie audience and make up 44 percent of the nation’s most avid theatergoers, according to the Motion Picture Association of America.

Far too often, Nation said, Latinos are cast in supporting roles, villains or damsels in distress characterized as sensual or seductive. But in “Star Wars,” Luna was cast as a protagonist.

This made an important statement. “Mexicans are often seen as drug dealers and rapists,” Nation said. “Now, you see a Mexican hero.”

When she was younger, attending a predominantly white school, Nation remembered feeling frustrated with her parents for not being able to speak English as clearly as her friends’ parents. As she grew older, Nation said, she began to appreciate the difficulty of learning a second language, and realized how wrong she was “for thinking that this difference was a detriment.” Still, her father has

always been self-conscious about his accent, and insists on speaking Spanish at home, even though he is fluent in English.

As Perez watched Diego Luna unabashedly speaking in his native accent on screen, “you could just see this huge smile on his face,” Nation said.

After they had left the movie, Perez asked his daughter if the film had made a lot of money and if people liked it. She told him the movie was the second highest grossing film of 2016, even though it had only been released for 18 days of the year, and that it had received great reviews. He then asked her why Diego Luna had not changed his accent.

“I told him that Diego has openly talked about keeping his accent and how proud he is of it,” Nation said.

Her father was silent for a while, and then said, “And he was a main character.”

“He was,” Nation responded. As they drove home, Perez spoke about other Mexican actors he thought should be featured in American movies.

Moved by her father’s reaction to the movie, Nation decided to write about it on her Tumblr blog. “Representation matters,” she wrote at the end of her post.

Her story quickly spread on social media, and the following day even Diego Luna himself tweeted about her post, saying, “I got emotional reading this!”

She received many messages from fellow Latinos telling her they now planned on taking their own parents to the film.

“My mother has an accent and has been in America for 25 years,” one writer posted on her blog. “Sometimes we tease her about some of the ways she pronounces things, but this made me see she’s not alone and re-appreciate her beautiful accent. Our parents came here to give us a better life along with their culture and it’s amazing that they’re allowing it in mainstream and normalizing it because it is normal.”

“For all of us who have an accent when speaking English, thanks and congratulations,” one Twitter user wrote to Diego Luna.

When Nation told her father that Diego Luna had tweeted her blog post, she recorded his reaction in a video. He said he was “extraordinarily happy.”

(AP) — She sits, smiles and begins to speak with the ease of someone you have known all your life. “I am the fruit of your country, I would not be here if my parents had not met in Argentina. I was there as a little girl and the truth is that I don’t remember much, I would love to return, I’ve been told very beautiful things,” says Adria Arjona, 24, in Los Angeles. Luckily, a publicist does not show up to ask for the interview to be done in English. That allows the young actress of NBC’s “Emerald City,” a remake of “The Wizard of Oz,” to speak in her colorful Spanish which is layered with the different accents she grew up hearing.

Daughter of Guatemalan singer Ricardo Arjona and Puerto Rican model Leslie Torres, Adria was born in Puerto Rico, but grew up in Mexico. At 12 she went to middle school in Miami, at 18 she moved to New York to study theater at the Lee Strasberg Institute.

“Yes. I’ve had a very lively life,” she acknowledges.

Traveling as a girl on her father’s tours, she read Neruda, listened to classical music and savored cuisines of many cities.

Even though she didn’t seem to like Miami too much, Adria loved New York and says she’s starting to like Los Angeles. Her travel, still, takes her around the world. She recently came back from spending eight months in Budapest and one month in Barcelona filming “Emerald City” and a few days in Australia for the second part of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”

Her father, she says, gave her wings to fly. And on her own she has been forging an enviable career in Hollywood. Her portrayal of Emily in the second season of “True Detective” on HBO, turned her into an It girl.

Esquire magazine wrote that Adria injects humanity and vulnerability in a series full of violence. And it’s true, she has an angelic aura that recalls Jessica Alba. She is a hit on social networks, too, with more than 100,000 followers on Instagram.

“I feel blessed” she says gratefully.

Adria is Dorothy in this modern version of “The Wizard of Oz,” a role created by Judy Garland. Actor Vincent D’Onofrio (who plays the magician) previously worked with “Emerald City” director Tarsem Sing on “The

Q. Are you in touch with the Latino community?

A. Yes, of course. I would never have imagined being in this series, especially be-

ing the protagonist, Dorothy, one of the most iconic roles in American history. That is a great triumph for me, because I can represent Latinos with this story.

Q. Some magazines call you the “Latina Bomb” Do you feel honored by that title?

A. If you find me sexy, well good, but the truth is that I am an actress and I want to play interesting roles and perform special women, I don’t necessarily want to be the sexy momma.

Q. In a note to a newspaper you said that you owed everything to your father.

A. I don’t think I said that. Professionally, it’s a very different career. I have studied a lot and worked hard. I don’t feel that I owe anything to anyone. It’s due to work and effort.

Q. Did he inspire you to be an actress?

A. He inspires me a lot, he tells me what books to read, he sends me music. On the artistic side he is always motivating me, he is cultivating my little head, and for that I am grateful. And he never told me I was well off.

It always was: ‘To work, you are not a rich girl, to work mamita, to work. That’s what we’re here for.’ And that tact, small-town-like, is what I think made me so hardworking.

Q. Would you have been encouraged to sing if “Emerald City” would have been a musical like “The Wizard of Oz”?

A. If you heard me sing, honestly, I’d blow your ears. I am very bad. My dad didn’t give me that. I think all us Arjonitas are artistic in our own way, but singing is not my thing.

Q. Were you familiar with the story of Dorothy and the “Wizard of Oz”?

A. My mom made me watch the movie when I was 7 years old. I was born traveling and I grew up traveling. That aspect of Doro-

thy who always wants to go home and who doesn’t know the true definition of a home, that struck me very hard. The truth is that my mom and dad are my home. Today, I realize this and thanks to that, I can travel and do a series for eight months and when my mom visits me, I feel at home. And when my dad visits me, I feel at home.

Q. The director is very imaginative; there are many special effects. Would you say you are the heroine of a new “Game of Thrones”?

A. Working with Tarem is a spectacle.

All you have to do with a director is to trust his vision. It is not “Game of Thrones,” but I understand the reference, because “Emerald City” is also very dark, and has the mystical and fantasy, there are castles, the characters are very layered.

Q. Do you see yourself working in Spanish? Starring in a soap opera?

A. There is no money in the world that would make me do a telenovela. And not because they’re something bad, but because the stories don’t inspire me.

Q. It seems like everything is happening very fast professionally. Do you feel that way?

A. Everything is happening very fast, but I have been working for some time. I have a movie that has not yet been released (“The Beltko Experiment”) and I filmed it two years ago. Now I’m going to Australia for “Pacific Rim: Uprising.” I have not stop working. I think we have to live the moment and take risks.

‘Arise from Darkness’

The only Latino film studio in the Chicago area produces a second movie

(Submitted by Ave Phoenix Pictures) — “Arise from Darkness” is an upcoming Paranormal-thriller film coproduced and written

by Zachary Laoutides, who also plays a leading role. This film has a cast that includes Emmanuel Isaac, Amparo Sanchez, Samuel Younan and Nathan Ayala.

The film, which was filmed in Aurora, was nominated at the Film Invasion Los Angeles 2016 for Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Feature Film. It will debut worldwide on ZACHARY LAOUTIDES Jan. 16.

“Arise from Darkness” is based on the early events of psychic Lazaro Ruben Torres who was clinically declared dead five times. Lazaro is a neighborhood medium who gains psychic abilities after a tragedy strikes him and his daughter leaving her dead. Lazaro is determined to develop his gift to reconnect with his daughter. In the process, he discovers the man who killed her and now must decide what to do.

Zachary Laoutides — Writer, director and actor

In 2008, Laoutides was the finalist out of Chicago for Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Nationwide talent search for new actors. From there, he became the only one selected to represent the United States.

Laoutides segued into acting from a writing career. He appeared in and wrote “Adios Vaya Con Dios,” an Official Selection at the Bel Air Film Festival 2014, where he won the Runner Up Best Audience Feature Film Award, and was nominated for Best Actor and Best Feature Film Screenplay Writer.

Laoutides is one of the co-founders of Ave Fenix Pictures, an independent film company out of Chicago, Los Angeles and Mexico.

“Ave Fenix Pictures brings a new method of filmmaking, that we had used to work with our first film ‘Adios Vaya Con Dios,’ creating a social film through relationships with our community and involving them throughout the moviemaking experience.

‘Arise from Darkness’ is a film embellished in the supernatural, just as ‘Adios Vaya Con Dios’ was, an urban Latino-themed film based on real events and yet was a journey of salvation message. Our new film centers around a spiritual journey of a man’s redemption embroidered in the culture of brujería (witchcraft),” Laoutides said.

“Borrowing the stories and experiences of those I interviewed, I wanted to tell a story of what I believed was real and what I believed to be disingenuous in paranormal/supernaturalism. I wanted to reveal the dangers of occultism that exists in the Latino community and the preying/manipulation of the innocent,” he said.

“She was so cute and spoke with a lisp, she sounded like she was from Spain (laughs).

She was so adorable, but yet so mature for her age. I just knew that she would rock this part and be able to do things that were beyond her comprehensions. She was truly the star of the film,” said Leon.

ZURICH — Estados Unidos y México podrían asociarse para cumplir con los requisitos de la Federación Internacional del Fútbol Asociado (FIFA) para organizar La Copa del Mundo más abarcadora de la historia del torneo en el 2026.

Canadá también se sumó a sus vecinos en la Confederación de Fútbol de Norteamérica, Centroamérica y el Caribe (CONCACAF) para iniciar conversaciones preliminares sobre una candidatura tripartita, dijeron personas con conocimiento de las pláticas. Las personas que proporcionaron la información a la Prensa Asociada lo hicieron bajo la condición de no ser identificadas por tratarse de unas negociaciones privadas.

La decisión de la FIFA el martes, 10 de enero, de expandir el torneo mundial del 2026 de 32 a 48 selecciones, con 80 partidos en vez de 64, aumenta las posibilidades de que haya más de un país como sede del torneo.

“No es solamente que este cambio tenga más sentido en algunas regiones, es que sería la única manera de hacerlo”, dijo el vicepresidente de la FIFA, líder de la CONCACAF y presidente de la federación canadiense, Victor Montagliani.

“Creo que cuando más países comparten (la sede), es una oportunidad para desarrollar el deporte del fútbol”, dijo Montagliani.

Cuando le preguntaron específicamente sobre una candidatura tripartita de Canadá con Estados Unidos y México, respondió: “Creo que definitivamente es una posibilidad, porque las reglas ahora lo permiten”.

he United States and Mexico could team up and meet FIFA’s need for the biggest-ever World Cup in 2026 being staged by the most host nations.

Canada has also joined the North American neighbors for informal talks about a three-way bid in a contest that FIFA will complete during American President-elect Donald Trump’s first term, according to people familiar with the talks. They spoke anonymously because the talks are confidential.

FIFA’s decision on Jan. 10 to expand the 2026 tournament — to 48 teams from 32, playing 80 games instead of 64 — increased the chances of co-hosting to share the load.

“In some regions not only does it make more sense, it’s the only sense,” said FIFA vice president Victor Montagliani, who leads the Canadian soccer federation.

“I think when more countries share (hosting) it’s an opportunity to grow the game.” Asked about a potential three-way bid with the U.S. and Mexico, Montagliani said: “It’s definitely a possibility because the rules now allow for it.

“I also respect the fact that each country has the possibility to put on the World Cup (alone) and I think the discussions will happen quite soon as to what is our region is going to look like at this World Cup as I think it is an opportunity for CONCACAF, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.”

Uniting the U.S. and Mexico could win support from more than 20 Spanish-speaking federations among 211 FIFA members who choose the World Cup hosts.

DID YOU KNOW? Coffee is a widely-consumed stimulant beverage prepared from roasted seeds of the coffee plant. Coffee was first consumed in the 9th century, when it was discovered in the highlands of Ethiopia. From there, it spread to Egypt and Yemen, and by the 15th century had reached Azerbaijan, Persia, Turkey, and northern Africa. From the Muslim world, coffee spread to Italy, then to the rest of Europe, Indonesia, and the Americas. Today, coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide.

The two most commonly grown species are Coffea canephora (also known as Coffea robusta) and Coffea arabica. These are cultivated in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Coffee has played an important role in many societies throughout modern history. In Africa and Yemen, it was used in religious ceremonies. As a result, the Ethiopian Church banned its consumption until the reign of Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia. It was banned in Ottoman Turkey in the 17th century for political reasons.

Community Outreach Specialist/Latino Ombudsman The City of West Chicago, Illinois is seeking a bilingual Community Outreach Specialist who will play a key role in promoting and coordinating services and opportunities offered by the City. This individual will develop and implement programs to increase community awareness of programs and services, targeting the Spanish speaking population and also conduct assessments to identify conditions, barriers and factors that are limiting the Latino population from understanding and/or accessing City services and developing detailed strategies to address them.

This position is part of the Administration Department and reports directly to the City Administrator. Position will also be responsible for developing and translating materials in Spanish to ensure effective communication with the Latino Community. Position requires: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Human Service Discipline (e.g. social work, sociology, psychology, public policy, etc.) or a related field. Four years of increasingly responsible experience in community based work such as advocacy and/or serving as a liaison/ombudsman with the Spanish speaking population. Bilingual – English/Spanish required.

Salary range: $63,674 - $89,144.
