con la tragedia dentro de su propia familia y su propia vida”, dijo Jaros. “Y creo que esa es una de las razones por las que pudo comprender, mostrar empatía y conectarse con algunas de las familias de otras de las víctimas”.

De las casi 3,000 cruces que Zanis construyó el año pasado antes de retirarse, un juego de estas lleva los nombres de los cinco empleados asesinados en un tiroteo en Henry Pratt Co. en Aurora: Clayton Parks, Trevor Wehner, Josh Pinkard, Russell Beyer y Vicente Juárez.

He had lost his characteristic energy to cancer, but Greg Zanis still was dedicated to his legacy the last time he met with an Aurora historian.

Though frail, the retired carpenter visited with Aurora Historical Society Executive Director John Jaros last Wednesday to talk about his final work, “The Cross Man,” a book about the person behind the white crosses that defined his life.

“He was a man of great faith, but also great energy, and I think he needed some-

thing to do, and he really found something that fit for him to not only to use his carpentry craft, but his faith and his empathy,” Jaros said. “And he just went everywhere.”

Zanis, the carpenter who single-handedly built thousands of crosses for shooting victims across the country, died Monday morning. He was 69.

Zanis lived long enough to see hundreds of people drive by his home in a long procession Friday, a “living visitation” held by his family to give Zanis some peace and comfort in his final days.

“He was a man of action who simply wanted to honor the lives of others,” Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said in a statement. “In return, his life was one of honor and one that was celebrated throughout our nation and world. Heeding to the Scripture ‘pick up your cross and follow me,’ Mr. Greg Zanis did just that. He picked up the crosses he made and followed his mission in the noblest of ways.”

Zanis began making crosses in 1996 to help grieve the murder of his father-in-law, Ralph “Bud” Stadler. Zanis built his first one in honor of Nico Contreras, a 6-year-old Aurora boy killed that year, at the request of the boy’s mother.

His crosses would become a symbol of the national ritual after every mass shooting.

“I started out not really expecting anything, and slowly I realized this is a calling, just a stranger showing an act of kindness from another state,” Zanis told the Daily Herald last year.

In 1999, Zanis placed crosses near Columbine High School, returning to Colorado 13 years later for another display in memory of the victims of a movie theater shooting.

Zanis would visit grief-stricken communities to put up crosses, Stars of David, crescent moons or generic wreaths in Newtown, Connecticut; San Bernardino, California; Orlando, Florida; Las Vegas; Parkland, Florida; and then his own hometown.

“Greg was a man of faith, and he encountered tragedy within his own family and his own life,” Jaros said. “And I think that’s one of the reasons he was able to understand and empathize and bond with some of the other families of the victims.”

Of the nearly 3,000 crosses Zanis built last year before retiring, one set bears the names of the five employees killed in a shooting at the Henry Pratt Co. in Aurora: Clayton Parks, Trevor Wehner, Josh Pinkard, Russell Beyer and Vicente Juarez.

Jaros has preserved those crosses, as part of the historical society’s collection. Zanis’ family also is offering the book through the historical society.

Another nonprofit group,Lutheran Church Charities, has taken over his cross-building mission.

City of Waukegan provides 14,000 masks for students and their families in need

LAKE COUNTY, IL (May 5, 2020) – Leaders United, a group of young professionals supporting the work of United Way of Lake County through volunteerism and philanthropy, launched a mask donation drive to support 3,500 Waukegan Public School students and families in need amid COVID-19 outbreak.

The group has focused primarily on service projects in the schools, including an early morning mentoring program at Robert Abbott Middle School for struggling students to promote confidence in academics, leadership and self-esteem.

Last week, the City of Waukegan contributed 14,000 disposable masks to the effort acquired through the Community Development Block Grant Program. Over the weekend a team of volunteers led by Leaders United and including representatives from United Way of Lake County, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 19th Judicial Circuit Court, Waukegan Main Street, Waukegan School District 60 and the City came together at City Hall to pack the masks for distribution.

“Our Waukegan Community Development Block Grant Department continues its mission to serve our community by joining with the United Way of Lake County, Leaders United, and Waukegan School District 60 in order to distribute masks to the low-income families of Waukegan students,” said Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham. “I appreciate the work of the partner agencies as well as the many volunteers that made this possible. And, we’re not

done. We will all continue to do what is necessary in this time of great need to fight the spread of the deadly COVID-19.”

The masks will be delivered today in conjunction with the district’s mobile meal distribution program to 80 locations throughout Waukegan. Teachers within the district will also benefit from the donation.

“It is amazing to see how many community members stepped up to meet Waukegan’s needs on such short notice and during this time of crisis,” said Carolina Fabian, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator at Waukegan Public Schools. ”Thank you United Way of Lake County and Leaders United for making it happen, and the City of Waukegan for the generous donation.”

The Leaders United mask donation drive will continue through May 28th. The community can donate unused disposable and homemade masks by placing in the collection bin near the front desk of the Waukegan Police Department, 101 N. West Street in downtown Waukegan. National Teacher Appreciation Week Anyone who has ever gone to school can remember a particular teacher for something the teacher said or did. You may remember a teacher who knew their subject impressively well or did not. You may just remember a teacher who really cared for his or her students. I had at least one teacher in each of thesecategories. We all have had teachers that we remember for one reason or another.

I remember one who said “If you needed a doctor you wouldn’t want one who cheated his way through medical school; so don’t cheat.” I had a civics teacher in 1964 who made politics and public policy very interesting. I’ve made it my life’s work for 56 years.

I had a teacher who said I would never amount to anythingand I became the only student from that high school and my college to receive a medal from a President of the United States “for the performance of exemplary deeds of service for the nation.”

I had a teacher who was a much better basketball coach than a history teacher. The only history I learned was what was in the textbook. I learned nothing from him, but

in college I majored in history and politics.

Mr. “Choc” Wetzel was my elementary/middle school teacher and coach. He was also a role model and really cared for his students. Not only did he teach us what we needed to learn

academically, he made good adults out of his kids. He taught us strong values, the importance of honesty, being of good character, being good in sports, and being a good sport. I have always appreciated him.

His students from the 1950’s later played professional football and baseball. Four Mexican-Americans earned doctoral degrees. Several became teachers and social workers. Many of the most successful Mexican Americans in Brownwood (TX) history had him as a teacher. He loved to ride his horse in parades and would always call us by our last name when we waved at him as he passed by.

Fifty years after my last class with him, he came to see me at a college recruitment fair USHLI was hosting for high school students at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church. He said, “I’ve kept up with your career and I just wanted to stop by and tell you that I’m very proud of you.”

He was a teacher who cared for and never forgot his kids.

The “Illinois Latino COVID-19 Initiative” is a Call for Action for the implementation of the following strategies: 1. Development and Implementation of a comprehensive bilingual public awareness campaign that will focus on zip codes with high COVID-19 cases and high concentration of Hispanics/Latinos, and other vulnerable populations. The campaign will include mainstream radio, broadcast

TV, cable, ethnic media, and social media (Facebook, Tik-Tok, Instagram).

2. Development and Implementation of a comprehensive bilingualoutreach and education health communication to educate residents and businesses in target zip codes with the fastest growing and highest number of COVID-19 cases. This outreach effort will consist of mobilizing networks of community-based organizations, community health promoters, faith-based organizations, churches, and the broad network of our elected officials participating in this initiative. We expect direct educational outreach to households (e.g. telephone calls, texts, etc.) with the messages designed to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

3. Implementation of a comprehensive education campaign targeting small businesses(e.g., carnicerias, bodegas, laundromats, other essential retail stores) in the Latino communities through the active involvement and participation of local Chambers of Commerce and nonprofit organizations. We want to assure that employees get the safe protection (masks, gloves) needed, that employment sites are cleaned, and that the employers assure that employees stay at home when they are ill.

4. Implementation of a bilingual informational campaign to inform the Latino community about the resources available at the state and city levels. Our community is hurting, and we need to assure that they are aware of programs that local, state and federal government and non-profit organizations are offering to address community multiple services in the area of financial assistance, housing, food insecurity, mental health, domestic violence, and other services. It is also a priority that we focus on connecting COVID-19 patients who need assistance to the organizations that have received resources from the state to aid them.

5. Improvement of data collection on race and ethnicity. An immediate and public release of the historical and current number of COVID-19 cases and fatalities, including the number of hospitalizations. have access to medical care, independently of insurance and immigration status. Data on hospitalization will allow us to assess that. It is also equally critical to know how many COVID-19 mortality-related fatalities have occurred among Latinos and among other vulnerable populations.

A Louisiana-based fast-food chain that specializes in chicken fingers is hoping to begin construction “as soon as possible” on a new location in Bloomingdale, village officials say.

Raising Cane’s is expected to get final approval next week from the village board to build a 3,290-square-foot restaurant with a drive-through at 334 W. Army Trail Road. The plan calls for an existing KFC restaurant to be demolished to make room for the building.

“We look forward to Bloomingdale,” said Anna Ball, regional leader of marketing for Raising Cane’s. “Not only do we want to do business in Bloomingdale, we want to give back to the community.”

Raising Cane’s, which has about 500 locations worldwide, entered the Chicago market in 2017. It now has nine area restaurants and plans to open another this summer in Glen Ellyn.

“When you enter a market, you want to test the waters and see how it goes,” Ball said.

“We feel like we’ve had a good testing period in the Chicago area. It’s done well for us.”

Ball says a number of fans call themselves “Caniacs” and enjoy the focused menu of chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, coleslaw and Cane’s Sauce.

“We serve one thing: the perfect box,” Ball said. “It’s always fresh, it’s always hot, and we serve it quickly. And our customers know that.”

She said the chicken fingers are marinated for 24 hours and never frozen. They’re then hand-battered and cooked-to-order.

She described Cane’s Sauce as “tangy with a little bit of spice.”

Ball couldn’t provide a timeline for when construction of the Bloomingdale location would start.

Once the village approves the project, Raising Cane’s would need to get a permit to demolish the existing KFC building.

Sean Gascoigne, Bloomingdale’s community and economic development director, said it’s unclear when KFC will move out. But he said Raising Cane’s would like to get started “as soon as possible.”

“In their mind, they are ready to go as soon as they can,” Gascoigne said.

The Raising Cane’s in Bloomingdale would have indoor and outdoor seating.

Hours are expected to be 10 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Crean guía para reducir el temor de los "soñadores" ante decisión del Supremo

Janine Trainor Fronteras de la Notiica - EFE Ante la incertidumbre del destino de la Acción Diferida (DACA), un grupo de "soñadores" ha creado una guía de servicios de salud mental para inmigrantes para quienes afrontan cuadros de depresión, ansiedad y trastorno de estrés postraumático sobre su futuro migratorio en el país.

Se trata, dicen sus autores, de la primera guía creada por líderes de organizaciones y universidades quienes han vivido de primera mano la experiencia de ser indocumentados.

Germán A. Cadenas, doctor en Filosofía de la Facultad de Educación de la Universidad de Lehigh, dijo a Efe que quieren proteger la salud mental de unos jóvenes expuestos a grandes presiones, especialmente ahora, días antes de que se dé a conocer la resolución del Tribunal Supremo de Justicia sobre la legalidad de la cancelación de DACA por parte del presidente Donald Trump.

Quien también fuera soñador, mencionó que la población que cuenta con este alivio migratorio "vive con mucha incertidumbre, ansiedad, depresión, lo que los orilla a desarrollar trastornos en sus vidas".

"Ellos saben que ese bene$cio migratorio les proporciona una base segura, y la idea que se puede ir en cualquier momento los afecta", dijo sobre el origen de esta guía creada para doctores, psicólogos consejeros y trabajadores sociales.

El programa DACA fue creado en 2012 y cancelado en 2017, pero se mantiene vigente por orden de jueces federales que, a su vez, abrieron la puerta para que el Gobierno de Trump solicitara a la Corte Suprema que revise la legalidad del bene$cio y el uso de la autoridad presidencial para cancelarlo.

Actualmente los "soñadores" están a la espera de una decisión por parte de la Corte Suprema, que debería llegar antes de $nales de junio próximo.

Esto tiene en vilo a unos 700.000 jóvenes que entraron siendo niños a Estados Unidos y que actualmente están amparados por este programa que les otorga un permiso temporal de residencia y trabajo.

Liliana Campos, candidata a doctorado en Psicología Clínica en la Universidad de San Francisco, mencionó a Efe que en esta guía aportó su propia experiencia como indocumentada y sus estudios psicológicos y profesionales.

Sobre los "soñadores", dijo, giran emociones como la incertidumbre, el racismo, la discriminación, la falta de acceso a recursos, pero, por su condición, también tienen más desarrolladas barreras de protección como una resiliencia que los ayuda a sobrevivir.

Con base en la experiencia clínica, en la guía se señalan los factores psicológicos más comúnmente observados en "dreamers" como pena, pérdida, depresión, ansiedad, trastorno de estrés postraumático, trauma, complejo, di$cultades de ajuste y baja autoestima.

Por ello, la guía, que se distribuyó de forma gratuita a distintas organizaciones como la Asociación Estadounidense de Psicología, busca que los proveedores de salud mental comprendan los detonantes que causan el dolor y el sufrimiento en este sector de inmigrantes y, así, poder trabajar en su alivio.

Laura P. Minero, de UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, quien es "soñadora", señaló a Efe que esta documento también explica a los propios "dreamers" estrategias a seguir para continuar con sus vidas.

Porque, reconoció, se esperan momentos difíciles de cara a la decisión de la Suprema Corte: "Vamos a tener sentimientos encontrados, pero es importante no sentir vergüenza por vivir esos sentimientos".

"Hemos enfrentado tantos di$cultades en nuestras vidas, sobre todo en esta Administración", dijo, aunque apuntó que estos jóvenes tienen un papel activo en la resolución de la situación: trabajar activamente para lograr un cambio en la Casa Blanca en noviembre próximo.

Como entrenador de los Dolphins, cargo que ejerció durante 26 años, consiguió llevar al equipo a cinco &nales del Super #owl y ganar dos de ellas, además de la única temporada perfecta en la historia de la NFL. Antes de los Doplhins estuvo siete temporadas con los #altimore Colts, que comandados por $l tuvieron un buen desempeño, que se torció cuando perdieron el tercer Super #owl frente a los New York Jets.

Tres años despu$s, en 19!2, llevó a los Dolphins a la victoria en el s$ptimo Super #owl y a repetir al año siguiente. En 19!2, Shula y los Dolphins se convirtieron en el único equipo en la historia de la NFL en completar una temporada perfecta, es decir sin derrotas. Trucos verdes al cocinar:

Ser verde cocinando no solo significa no hacer más raciones de las necesarias o saber aprovecharlas para otra co-mida. Como es bien sabido, economizar energía es fundamental para poder hablar de una cocina sostenible.

No abrir el horno durante la cocción si no es estrictamente necesario, acelerar la cocción usando la olla a presión o poniendo tapas, adaptar el tamaño de la cazuela al del fogón o aprovechando el calor residual son algunos ejemplos.

Reutilizar y reciclar:

Como no podía ser de otra manera, las tres erres de la ecología (reducir, reutilizar y reciclar) también son de aplicación en la cocina. Si minimizar significa prescindir de lo prescindible, reutilizar puede ayudarnos a dar otro uso un accesorio antes de desecharlo, como puede ser un cepillo de dientes, previamente esterilizado. O, por ejemplo, dar una segunda vida a las bolsitas de té, los posos de café, la piel de los cítricos y a los desechos orgánicos, idóneos para para hacer compost con el que abonar las plantas.

Plantas en la cocina:

Las cocinas son más verdes si tienen plantas que también lo sean. No se trata de que tengan hojas del color de la espe-ranza, sino de que sean una especie durable o, por ejemplo, de tener hierbas con las que podamos cocinar.

Idealmente, cuidémoslas mediante prácticas de jardinería bio. Con respecto a las plantas de interior ornamentales ideales para la cocina, sería interesante tener palmeras, como las palmeras Rhapis o el anthurium, eficaces para purificar la atmósfera. Eso sí, cuidado con las especies venenosas, sobre todo por los niños y las mascotas.

La basura: reducir y separar:

La basura más ecológica es aquella que no se produce.

Parece una perogrullada, pero tenerlo claro es clave para conseguir que la cocina, donde se producen muchos desechos, sea un espacio más verde. y, por supuesto, además de reducir, separemos la basura para poderla reciclar convenientemente.

“We wanted to support MCC students in any way we could as they navigate the transition to online learning and face any other challenges that may come up during this time,” said Paula Long of the MCC Store. “We’ve been able to see firsthand how the Student Success Fund helps students achieve their goals, and we’re excited to contribute to those efforts.”

Originally established in 2017, the Student Success Fund was designed to improve retention when unforeseen circumstances could impact a student’s ability to stay in college.

Over the past three years, the Foundation has raised more than $44,000 for the Student Success Fund, and has awarded more than $25,000 in direct aid to help students cover emergency expenses such as automotive repairs, rent, car payments, medical bills, and daycare expenses.

With even more students experiencing per-

sonal, academic, or financial hardships as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation was able to immediately respond using resources from this fund—purchasing a number of laptops and Chromebooks for student use, doubling their maximum gift award amount from $500 to $1,000 per student, making their application form easily accessible online, and broadening the criteria for those who qualify for aid.

“Like many members of our community, our students may be facing the financial strain of lost work hours or figuring out how to balance childcare with their classes,” said Brian DiBona, executive director of the Friends of MCC Foundation. “Our goal is to step in and provide whatever support these students need to keep them in school and focused on their educational goals. The generous support from the MCC Store will help us reach even more students during this unprecedented time.”

NRG donates $10,000 to the Illinois Latino Caucus Foundation

As part of a national initiative to support COVID-19 relief efforts, NRG donated $10,000 to the Illinois Latino Caucus Foundation. Through the Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Fund, this donation will help support critical assistance for small businesses and non-profit organizations across the state, including health resources, rental assurance and food assistance.

On a broader level, NRG is pledging $100,000 to support the state of Illinois during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

as part of its larger $2M commitment to assist non-profits and charitable funds supporting first responders and teachers, as well as impacted employees and communities where NRG does business.
