Sustainable building material sales surge.
A new survey shows strong sales across sustainable product ranges in the last 12 months, with purchases of renewable heating systems up 60% compared with last year.
Sales of recycled roofing tiles rose by 146% in the 12 months to the end of February 2025, while high e ciency insulation sales increased by 12% during the same period.
Analysis of Jewson’s Building for the Future product range indicates strong demand from builders and tradespeople for more sustainable solutions.
The top five most popular sustainable products during the last 12 months were: high e ciency insulation; air source heat pumps; sustainable timber cladding; permeable paving; and recycled cavity liners.
Looking ahead, it has reported an emerging trend for timber cladding at the start of 2025, led by homeowners looking to make their outside spaces more attractive and environmentally friendly. Solar panels and products are also rising in popularity this year, as well as products that enhance biodiversity, following the Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirement which became mandatory last year.

The Future Homes Standard and recent changes to building regulations are also driving the industry towards more sustainable solutions. However, we also know that many builders and tradespeople are still overwhelmed and unsure where to begin when it comes to sustainability.”
Little has changed in construction material supply since the last statement in December 2024, says the latest Material Supply Chain Group statement. The statement from says: “Within the current market, there are few reports of supply issues. The expectation is that the overall increase in the cost of construction products this year will be between 2% and 8%, depending on product type, with energy-intensive products seeing the largest increase.”

Retrofit showers cut emissions at Newcastle University Newcastle University has boosted sustainability by retrofitting its Cochrane Park Sports Complex with Cistermiser’s Vecta+ MSPV water-saving shower panels. Installed in August 2022, the eight units replace 20-year-old fixtures, helping reduce water use, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. The mechanical push-button showers, with an 8-litre-per-minute flow rate and 30-second shut-off, are expected to save over 2.3 million litres of water and £5,500 annually. The upgrade supports the university’s environmental goals and offers payback in just four months. A spokesperson said the showers align with long-term sustainability plans and praised their ease of installation and 10-year warranty. Howells Patent Glazing has supplied two new rooflights for the conservation and redevelopment of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.
The most dramatic of the two installations is the flat rooflight which sits above the iconic Grade II listed Kiln. To maximise the natural light levels, Howells designed a large 2m x 2m aluminium flat rooflight with double glazing. The rooflight is fixed to four upstand kerbs and achieves a 1.0 W/ m2K U-value which contributes to the building’s thermal performance. A second rooflight was
specified for the space which connects the adapted Kiln and North Engine House and the existing Cross Mill. This rooflight is constructed in accordance with BS 5516 and BS 1474 from aluminium glazing bars with thermal barrier and four panes of glass. Due to the 5° pitch and location of the self-supported rooflight, Howells selected Class 2 non-fragility glazing. It was glazed onsite using 28mm double glazed units with a 6mm toughened and Easy Clean outer pane and 9.5mm clear inner pane. Once again, the centre pane achieves a 1.0 W/m2K U-value.

The innovative use of this material, which is traditionally used in cladding and insulation, gives PURe® the potential to achieve U-values as low as 0.71 W/m²K for windows and 0.93 W/m²K for doors, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing heat loss.
