The Deputy Prime Minister’s statement in response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Final Report recommendations reflected an understanding that while the UK construction industry has improved since the tragedy, there is much that remains to be done.

The Construction Products Association (CPA) has welcomed the Government’s publishing of the Construction Products Reform Green Paper.

“As with the two independent reviews overseen by Dame Judith Hackitt and Morrell/Day, we will work with our members and wider industry to provide our full support and response during the Green Paper’s consultation,” it said.

“We are already pleased to note in the Paper the recognition and support from Government for our work in developing the Code for Construction Product Information as a positive industry initiative to raise standards in product information and marketing."

The Government’s response and the Green Paper mark another key milestone in a continuing series of reforms to our industry’s culture and practices. The CPA remains committed to learning from this tragedy and helping drive meaningful change, particularly toward eliminating unsafe practices and ensuring that safety and accountability become non-negotiable priorities in the industry.

Amanda Long, Chief Executive of CPI Ltd, the not-for-profit organisation set up to guard and manage the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI), said: “The direction of travel laid out by the Government is clear. Industry does not need to wait. All parties must now play their part and embrace greater responsibility, accountability and transparency.

“In line with this, the CCPI is on a mission to drive a transformational step-change in construction product information management and marketing. If you are a demand-side player – whether that be a contractor, developer, housebuilder, client, architect, specifier, insurer – join our Supporter community. If you are a manufacturer or supplier, merchant or distributor, register with the CCPI for assessment of product information and marketing and become part of the community working with the CCPI to raise standards across the industry.”

Raising the bar on EWI productivity, quality and performance

The latest additions to EJOT UK’s ETICS range are helping the EWI (external wall insulation) industry streamline its supply chain, and maintain consistently high quality during installation for the long-term benefit of specifiers and residents.

The performance of EWI systems or ETICS (external thermal insulation composite systems) will only ever be as good as the component parts. Hence why EJOT’s latest ETICS range offers a holistic solution that could be a game-changer in terms of how EWI components are sourced, their ease of installation and performance.

In particular, with an extension of the EJOT Pro-Line range of profiles, EWI system providers can now source their complete suite of fixing and attachment components from a single supplier. The EJOT ETICS range is also supported with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to provide quantified data on its environmental impacts.

EJOT UK also supports installers to achieve better quality consistency through a 360-degree service, including on site services covering three product segments – anchors, profiles and mounting elements.

EJOT’s ETICS range improves the performance of EWI systems too, including by reducing the risk of thermal bridging – an issue which impacts on overall thermal performance and can result in dampness and mould growth on internal surfaces. EJOT profiles are also manufactured from PVC rather than aluminium to further reduce thermal transfer, while still maintaining high rigidity.

New rooflights for award-winning Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

www.specification productupdate.com

Howells Patent Glazing has supplied two new rooflights for the conservation and redevelopment of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.

The most dramatic of the two installations is the flat rooflight which sits above the iconic Grade II listed Kiln. To maximise the natural light levels, Howells designed a large 2m x 2m aluminium flat rooflight with double glazing. The rooflight is fixed to four upstand kerbs and achieves a 1.0 W/ m2K U-value which contributes to the building’s thermal performance. A second rooflight was

specified for the space which connects the adapted Kiln and North Engine House and the existing Cross Mill. This rooflight is constructed in accordance with BS 5516 and BS 1474 from aluminium glazing bars with thermal barrier and four panes of glass. Due to the 5° pitch and location of the self-supported rooflight, Howells selected Class 2 non-fragility glazing. It was glazed onsite using 28mm double glazed units with a 6mm toughened and Easy Clean outer pane and 9.5mm clear inner pane. Once again, the centre pane achieves a 1.0 W/m2K U-value.

The innovative use of this material, which is traditionally used in cladding and insulation, gives PURe® the potential to achieve U-values as low as 0.71 W/m²K for windows and 0.93 W/m²K for doors, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing heat loss. Over the past decade, the PURe® range has evolved to offer a variety of configurations. Senior also added the PURe® Commercial Door to the range in 2019.

Heating & Ventilation

The Xtend Hybrid - the best of both worlds

The Xtend hybrid system from Intergas is a product in home heating for specification managers, renewable installers, and heating contractors. Offering the best of both worlds, Xtend combines the energy efficiency of a heat pump with a gas combi boiler, creating a powerful, smart heating solution.

The system features a 5kW Monobloc air source heat pump (ASHP) and a compact indoor unit as a central hub. This hybrid setup ensures maximum energy efficiency and comfort by alternating between the gas boiler and the heat pump depending on the external temperature. Impressively, Xtend can reduce gas consumption by up to 82.5%, making it an environmentally conscious

choice for homeowners aiming to lower their carbon footprint.

One of Xtend’s standout benefits is its flexibility. For homes with a compliant ErP combi or system boiler, the Xtend can be retrofitted to a majority of boiler brands, avoiding the need to replace existing systems. This reduces installation costs and time and makes it accessible to a wider range of properties. Additionally, installers don’t require F-gas certification as the refrigerants are sealed within the heat pump, simplifying the process further.

With its whisper-quiet ASHP and compact design, Xtend offers flexible installation options, allowing you to

position the units conveniently within specified ranges.

Featuring added perks like detailed energy-saving controls via the Comfort Touch thermostat and a reduced configuration time of under 10 minutes, it’s clear Xtend prioritises installer convenience and homeowner satisfaction.

Xtend's affordability, environmental benefits, and easy installation make it ideal for modern heating projects, delivering exceptional efficiency without compromising on comfort.
