The government has published updates for a more consistent and accountable building safety system, acting on the recommendations in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
This follows on from the Grenfell Tower fire, a national tragedy that took the lives of 72 people and could have been prevented. The government is focused on taking robust action to address the problems identified by the Inquiry and to build a regulatory system that people trust to ensure homes are safe.
A Call for Evidence has been launched to drive a new Building Professions Strategy, exploring how people work during all stages of the building process, from designers to contractors.
The strategy, based on evidence of what works, is set to be published in 2027. It will provide a clear view on the skills, experience and accountabilities required of those across the building process â ensuring a skilled workforce equipped to deliver safe and sustainable buildings.
It also marks the first step in delivering a new college of fire and rescue. The college will help strengthen the professionalism and skills of leaders and firefighters across the fire and rescue sector, improve consistency of standards across services, and widen access to best practice âresulting in a better, more efficient service for the public. The consultation that has launched today seeks views from the sector and the public to help shape the collegeâs design.
Minister for Building Safety, Fire and Democracy, Samantha Dixon said: âThe Grenfell tragedy should never have happened, and we remain committed to learning and acting on its failings.
âHigh standards, responsibility and safety must underpin the whole building process, upheld by everyone across the profession. The measures announced today are an important step to cementing these standards and delivering on our commitment of safe homes fit for the future.â
Last month, the Kingâs Speech confirmed plans to introduce a Remediation Bill, which will drive forward the remediation of historic unsafe cladding even faster â removing barriers, getting buildings fixed faster and allowing residents to feel safer in their homes.

The Architects Registration Board (ARB) has confirmed that two universities have become new providers of ARB accredited masterâs-level qualifications under its new education framework.
In April, Heriot-Watt University and Southampton Solent University had their new masterâs-level architecture degrees approved by ARBâs Accreditation Committee, following a statutory consultation with relevant professional bodies.
The addition of these qualifications marks a significant milestone in ARBâs transition from the outgoing education framework to the new one, as they are the first qualifications from newly participating providers to achieve ARB accreditation under the revised framework.
Expanding the range of institutions offering ARB accredited qualifications helps ensure consistent high standards in architectural education across the UK and supports ARBâs aim to broaden access to the Register.

The courses are set to commence in September 2026, and applications are open now. The National Wealth Fund and Lloyds Banking Group have announced a new commitment to unlock up to ÂŁ500 million of financing to support the retrofit and decarbonisation of university estates across the UK.
The financing will support universities to invest in energy-efficiency upgrades and low-carbon heating across university campuses, helping to reduce emissions, lower long-term energy costs and modernise hundreds of buildings for staff, students and researchers.
Through the agreement, Lloyds Banking Group will provide up to ÂŁ500 million of lending to UK universities, enabled by up to ÂŁ350m of financial guarantees provided by the National Wealth Fund, which will help modernise up to 300 campus buildings.
The guarantee allows Lloyds to offer longer-tenors and more flexible financing that helps make retrofit projects viable, accelerating energy-efficiency upgrades and heat decarbonisation across the higher education estate. These upgrades also help grow the UKâs retrofit capability â from local contractors to specialist engineers â supporting up to 4000 jobs and strengthening the supply chain as universities upgrade complex estates.
Universities represent a hard-to-abate part of the built environment, facing an estimated decarbonisation cost of ÂŁ8.8 billion associated with their built environment.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, is to invest ÂŁ20m into a major redevelopment of Solihullâs Holbeche Place â formerly known as Mell Square - part of his on-going drive to secure vibrant futures for the regionâs town and city centres.
The financial backing will be used to help fund Holbeche Place which will bring new shops, restaurants and more than 1,600 new homes into the centre of Solihull.
The new mixed-use neighbourhood will be built in phases over the next ten years and is a once in a generation opportunity to reimagine the town centre, injecting fresh life and vibrancy.
Many institutions are responsible for large, diverse estates that include older and specialist buildings, making retrofit particularly challenging without access to long-term, affordable finance.

A new riverside community is set to launch in Hertford this June, as Berkeley prepares to unveil Hertford Locks.
The development will bring 446 new homes, including one- and two-bedroom apartments and three- and four-bedroom townhouses, as well as more than ÂŁ4 million of investment to the area. Located in Hertford on the banks of the River Lea, the new development will offer a rare combination of riverside living and town centre convenience.
As part of the wider plans for Hertford Locks, Berkeley will contribute more than ÂŁ4million towards local infrastructure and community facilities through Section 106 funding. This includes ÂŁ1.8m towards sustainable and active travel infrastructure, ÂŁ900k towards primary and secondary education and SEND provision, ÂŁ500,000 for expanded healthcare facilities and ÂŁ115k towards community centres.
Funding will also support local parks, green space, playing pitches, sports halls, swimming facilities, tennis courts and bowls facilities, as well as recycling and waste transfer infrastructure.

Almost two years ago, the historic site of the Belper Tools engineering works in Levenshulme, Manchester, was purchased by Burke Construction North West Ltd, who had an ambition to use the space to deliver modern homes focused on efficiency, comfort and smart living.
Combining elegant design with a spacious interior, the company developed Belper Terrace, a small estate of eight semi-detached four-bedroom homes in a sought-after neighbourhood. The homes feature four generous double bedrooms across three floors, two sleek bathrooms, and a downstairs WC. To ensure efficiency, the homes also feature an EV charging point, solar panels and the Navien NCB700 ON Combi boiler.
Before the development could be placed on the market, as with all new build developers, Burke Construction had the challenge of meeting strict Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) calculations.
Introduced by the government to assess and compare the energy and environmental performance of buildings, the SAP assessors calculate how much energy a new development will consume in line with Building Regulations and all energy and environmental policy initiatives.
SAP recommended that a system boiler from another well-known manufacturer be installed in the new Belper Terrace homes; however, as Burke Construction had already decided to use a Navien heating system due to their positive experience with the technical team, they asked Navienâs Technical Director to speak with the SAP accessor, after which they agreed that it would meet the requirements of the assessment.
For Keith Burke, Director of Burke Construction, the priority when choosing a heating system was how much space it would save. He heard that Navienâs NCB700
ON combi boiler could deliver consistent hot water in larger homes, without the need for a large, bulky cylinder taking up what could have been storage space. And the boiler itself is compact enough to be hidden in a kitchen cupboard, so as not to intrude on the design of the room.
Feeling that the NCB700 ON would complement the modern luxury of the housing development, Burke made an initial enquiry and received a call from Navien the same day. The technical team visited the development two days later.
Burke commented: âThe technical team came to the site within a couple of days [of the enquiry], the technical manager also came. They installed the boiler into the show home and converted it to Calor gas. It worked perfectly, and we were confident to install it in the rest of the homes. You wouldnât get this level of support from many other places.â
The boilers, which come with the gas conversion kit included, were installed rear-piped, with a pipe down the back and a standoff bracket for a neater finish to the installation.
For new build homes in particular, the efficiency of heating systems is crucial as the UK continues to advance towards Net Zero 2050.

The Royal Parks commissioned HTA Design to create something extraordinary, celebrating the Queenâs remarkable service and lifelong love of nature and gardens.
The garden is the latest addition to the series of historic landscapes within The Regentâs Park, opening a two-acre former store yard to the public for the first time in over 100 years. While this new space sits in harmony with the parkâs traditional landscape, it responds to our changing climate by being highly adaptable and resilient.
The garden delivers a huge boost to biodiversity, achieving a 184% Biodiversity Net through the introduction of hedgerows,
trees, meadows, wildlife-attracting plants and a new pond,â explained HTA Design.
âPlants and trees are selected that can adapt to the UKâs changing climate.
âThe garden also includes plant species that were significant to Queen Elizabeth IIâs life.
The central idea underpinning both the design and its aesthetic was the reuse of materials arising from the demolition of the siteâs glasshouses, resulting in 80% reduction in embodied carbon when comparing the largest carbon contributors with typical practice.â
The straight path that runs through the garden represents the late Queenâs unwavering loyalty and service with each end offering a moment of quiet reflection. At the southern main entrance, visitors are greeted by a large pond complete with seating and a pergola.
The central promenade is bisected by a meandering path which leads visitors through a series of beautiful landscapes. A network of small-scale informal paths allows visitors to wander through the planting and explore the garden further.The plants chosen for the garden are wildlife-friendly and designed to create vibrant year-round horticultural display. Many of the plants have a direct connection to Queen Elizabeth II and the places she loved.
Lily of the valley â which featured in Her Majestyâs coronation bouquet â grows alongside Narcissus âDiamond Jubileeâ and Tulipa âRoyal Celebrationâ. Myrtle, rosemary, oak and Maackia amurensis all carry royal or personal associations.
More than 40 new trees have been planted, each selected to complement the garden, to be climate-resilient and to provide food and habitat for wildlife. Specimen trees from Commonwealth nations take their place alongside native species. >>

Vandersanden is publishing its 2025 Sustainability Report today. The report outlines where Europeâs largest family-owned, brick-producing company stands today in terms of sustainability, and the steps it will take in the coming years towards its goal: climate-neutral production by 2050.
Four pillars are central: sustainability for the environment, in the workplace, within the sector and in the community. âFor us, sustainable business is the way we have been doing business for generations,â says CEO Johan Deburchgrave. âIt is not a strategy; it is an ongoing responsibility.â
The 23% reduction in CO2 (Scope 1 and 2) is the result of targeted investments, technological innovations and various efficiency improvements across our operations.
In Tolkamer, a single new tunnel kiln has replaced three older kilns. This kiln consumes 25% less energy. In Beek, an innovative steam-drying technology â a European first â is delivering an additional 35% reduction in CO2 emissions at that plant. Thanks to 41,010 solar panels and Vandersandenâs own wind turbine in Lanklaar, renewable energy production rose by 246% compared to 2020.
"We are proud of the steps we have taken so far. They demonstrate that our investments are making an impact," says CEO Johan Deburchgrave. "But the work is never done. We continue to work on making our processes, production and products more
sustainable. For example, in Lanklaar we are testing whether we can directly reuse CO2 from our chimney for the production of our CO2-negative facing brick PirrouetÂŽ."
For Vandersanden, sustainability does not stop at the factory gate. In 2025, more than 850 employees completed an average of 50 hours of training.
The majority of all employees completed the VDS-M leadership programme, a scheme that embeds leadership and ownership on the shop floor.

The number of reports of hazardous situations rose by 23%, a positive sign of growing vigilance.

Baking bricks requires temperatures above 1,000°C. Full electrification is not sufficient for this task. Low-carbon molecules such as hydrogen are not currently available on an industrial scale, whilst the cost of emission allowances is set to rise sharply in the coming years.

Groundbreaking projects are helping to turn old and underused buildings into ultra-modern, efficient and futureproofed sites as ambitious refurbishment programmes take advantage of innovative products and systems.
Morgan Sindall Construction and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council are celebrating significant progress in the delivery of the pioneering Net Zero Carbon refurbishment of Pen-y-Dre High School, with final handover scheduled for 2026.
The comprehensive refurbishment has included new roofing, cladding, windows and external doors, mechanical and electrical works, internal alterations, internal finishes, fixed furniture and fittings, and extensive external works across the 11,250m² site. The project has been delivered through six carefully phased stages to ensure minimal disruption to the pupils and staff who have remained on site throughout construction.
A key highlight of the transformation is the installation of a substantial photovoltaic array, which will not only support the school's Net Zero Carbon status but also provide surplus energy to the neighbouring Prince Charles Hospital and Goetre project via direct wire connection. The innovative approach has already delivered 619 tonnes of carbon savings through operational efficiencies.
The decision to refurbish rather than rebuild was driven by environmental considerations, with the refurbishment approach delivering four times less carbon impact than a new build whilst preserving valued facilities including the school's swimming pool, two dining halls, and two sports halls. The expert project team, comprising Lawray Architects, Cambria (civil and structural),
WSP and High Admit (MEP services), and Mark Morant Sustainable Design (Net Zero Carbon consultant), successfully addressed complex site challenges including asbestos, structural issues, and contamination whilst improving circulation and widening corridors throughout the building.
Vacuum glazing for heritage restoration
There are many industrial applications for vacuum technology, and these continue
to expand as technology advances. At the same time, falling costs are making it an increasingly practical solution for highperformance glazing.
Aside from being a very good barrier against sound transmission, the thermal insulation value of an evacuated 8mm thick IG unit can actually exceed that of triple glazing, as London based ASWS has demonstrated using custom made units supplied by 1st Vacuum Glass.
While controlling cost is crucial on almost any contract, with listed building and other heritage projects, aesthetic perceptions along with the basic principles of conservation will generally take precedence. Increasingly, keeping faith with the original fabric of a property is also in harmony with the goals of sustainability â counting towards higher BREEAM ratings.
Interestingly ASWS is often tasked with sourcing âheritageâ glass â with its irregular reflectance - for restoration contracts, but another aspect to vacuum units worthy of consideration is how the significantly reduced gap between the inner and outer leaf is close enough to effectively obviate the issue of a âDouble Reflectionâ. Often apparent when looking at double glazed windows from outside, it is an effect which conservation officers and heritage bodies always want to avoid.
Reflecting on the wide ranging benefits of incorporating vacuum glazing within conserved steel, timber and other window types, the Operations Director for ASWS, Kris Bennell, adds: âThe majority of our contracts concern listed buildings and those in conservation areas where keeping faith with the original fenestration patterns is a key requirement, but the need to balance heritage with energy conservation has been underlined
by an important new planning policy published by Westminster City Council in January.
âAt the core of the âCity Plan Partial Reviewâ is a new Retrofit First policy to tackle Climate Change, requiring developers to consider all reasonable options for adapting existing buildings rather than demolishing and rebuilding. And the urgency is underlined by the fact that 90% of Westminsterâs total CO2 emissions are linked to the built environment, compared to the 40% figure typical for most councils. As we know, fenestration is responsible for a big proportion of the heat loss from domestic and other properties so we would expect to be fitting a lot more vacuum glazing units in the course of our future heritage and other refurbishment projects.â
When Preston College sought to create a modern classroom with a distinctive industrial look, they turned to Zentia for a ceiling solution that combined style, functionality, and cost-effectiveness.
Architects FWP Preston faced several design challenges. Preston College wanted a modern classroom aesthetic with a bold, industrial, and edgy vibe that would also be cost-effective and delivered within tight lead times to ensure the college did not experience any disruption.

The Oplia tile was also used in the communal spaces for its sleek aesthetic and smooth laminated finish. It also provides a good blend of acoustics, sound attenuation properties and brilliant sound absorption. Rated Class C in sound absorption, it still allows the right amount of noise to travel, proving effective for spaces where students meet and talk in groups.

The installation comprises of two swing doors that automatically open outwards to welcome visitors into a convenient lobby, providing protection from the weather and minimising heat loss from the building. A large single sliding door then provides access into the main reception area.
Both sets of doors are powered using TORMAXâs in-house designed iMotion operators with the entire solution being engineered for intensive public use, delivering quiet operation, robust reliability, and industry-leading safety functionality compliant with modern access standards.

The long-awaited Future Homes Standard has finally been unveiled and the roof has become a central focus for a lot of the improvements, guidance and challenges the housing industry now faces.
The Future Homes Standard has been released aimed at outlining commonsense measures to ensure the majority of new homes are built cheaper to run, with solar panels and clean heating as standard.
These measures on new homes could save families up to ÂŁ830 a year on their energy bills, compared to a standard home with an EPC rating of C. This will ensure they are more comfortable and affordable â and create at least 75% less carbon emissions than those built to the 2013 standards.
The Future Homes Standard Essentials set out seven critical actions to help homebuilders and their advisors to de-risk the delivery of more sustainable homes that are comfortable, healthy, low-energy, zero carbon ready and aligned with the future energy system.
But the move was not without controversy. The Government is driving forward with the rollout of âplug-inâ solar panels (lowcost panels that families can put on their balconies or outdoor space) to be available in shops within months and save people money on their bills.
Plug-in solar is already widely used by households across Europe, with Germany seeing around half a million new devices plugged in per year. The free solar power can be used directly through a mains socket like any other device, without an installation cost,
thereby reducing the amount of electricity taken from the grid and cutting energy bills.
The easy-to-install technology could save many households significant amounts on their energy bills and help make the UK less reliant on global fossil fuel markets.
However, NFRC also urges ministers not to let ambition outpace the safety frameworks needed to deliver it responsibly. NFRC strongly supports the expansion of rooftop solar and is eager to see it done correctly and efficiently. However, significant gaps in installer competence standards, cross-trade responsibility delineation, and fire safety testing remain unresolved, and today's
announcement accelerates deployment before those gaps have been sufficiently resolved.
Ben Rowlands, NFRC Head of Solar PV, said: "The direction of travel is right, and we want solar to succeed. But rooftop solar is a roofing system decision as much as an electrical one, and the current accreditation framework does not reflect that. Industry is still working through where responsibilities between trades begin and end, and consumers are bearing the risk in the meantime."
"The more solar we put into the built environment, the more important it becomes to get the basics right. Solar-related fires are already rising at roughly twice the rate of installations. We cannot keep scaling deployment and hope the safety framework catches up. This not only risks homeowner safety, but also the future of the industry."
NFRC calls on the Government to ensure roofing expertise is represented in the workforce that will deliver the Future Homes Standard and Warm Homes Plan, and to treat rooftop solar as part of the building envelope, not a bolt-on electrical product distinct from the built environment.

This means variable build quality, no consistent UK safety standards, questionable long-term reliability, and connectors and cabling that are not designed for prolonged outdoor exposure in UK conditions.
Currently, solar panels are designed to integrate with a local electrical system. They require installation by a qualified electrician to maximise efficiency and cost savings. Without this degree of technical knowledge, a DIY install of a safety critical product could overload the system and cause fire and electrocution.
Gary Parker, Head of Technical at ECA, said: âIâm delighted to see a fabric-first approach and energy efficiency mandated in new builds from next year. ECA is a strong advocate for the transition to net zero and the deployment of well-designed, professionally installed low-carbon technologies.

Retrofit projects also hit new standards
The reroofing of Edinburghâs Grade B-listed former Royal Hospital for Sick Children using CUPA PIZARRASâ Heavy 3 natural slate has delivered one of the most significant heritage roofing projects in Scotland in recent years.
Specified for its authentic appearance and proven long-term performance, Heavy 3 provided the ideal solution to preserve
fixed onto a perished horsehair felt and, having reached the end of its life, required a complete reroof.
Given the buildingâs listed status and the weight, scale and the steep 45-degree pitch of the original roof structure, a heavy-grade slate was needed to maintain the structural load expectations and meet planning requirements.
CUPA PIZARRASâ Heavy 3 slate was specified by the client and main contractor Square & Crescent as the closest match to the original roof. Widely recognised by Historic Environment Scotland as a suitable
the historic character of the building, now transformed into the centrepiece of the mixed-use luxury residential apartment scheme Royal Meadows â a bold yet sensitive heritage redevelopment for Edinburgh.
Covering 1,300 sqm, the original Westmorland (green peggie) slate roof was
alternative for heritage projects, Heavy 3âs riven texture, nominal thickness of 7.5mm and dark blue-grey colour provide both authenticity and durability.
The roof installation was completed on time across a 13-month programme and within budget, with all work completed to NHBC standards.

A comprehensive roof refurbishment project of Aberystwyth Universityâs Great Hall and Theatre buildings has successfully resolved long-standing water ingress issues.
Originally constructed in the late 1960s, the two landmark campus buildings feature precast concrete flat roof structures. Over time, the original bituminous waterproofing system, which had limited insulation and was overclad with profiled sheeting, had significantly deteriorated.
In the Great Hall, in particular, water ingress had become an ongoing issue for more than 15 years, with carefully positioned buckets used to catch rainwater becoming as commonplace as textbooks.
Working in partnership with RTL UK GROUP, BMI Icopal provided early-stage technical support to help determine a robust, long-term solution.
Icopalâs refurbishment specification team, alongside RTL UK GROUP, carried out visual assessments, core sampling and surface level surveys across the nine separate roof
areas. Adhesion and mechanical fixation tests were also undertaken by specialist partners, Dove Technologies and SFS, to determine substrate suitability.
The findings were used to develop tailored tapered insulation plans for each roof area, alongside performance calculations to support the final specification.
A key project requirement was that the buildings could not simply close their doors while work took place overhead. As a result, a flame-free solution was selected to minimise risk within the live educational environment and to avoid additional fire watch procedures at the end of each working day â a particular benefit to keep the winter project on track during limited daylight hours.
The final specification comprised a fully adhered Monarplan GF PVC single ply membrane, Thermazone Roofboard PIR tapered insulation and a TorchSafe AVCL self-adhesive air and vapour control layer, all supplied by Icopal. The existing bituminous membrane was to be retained, with a new 18mm OSB layer mechanically fixed to form a suitable substrate for the specified warm roof system.

with tapered insulation design and a robust waterproofing system, we were able to work alongside RTL UK Group to deliver a solution that resolves the long-standing issues while being installed safely in a live university environment.â
Single ply was identified as the preferred waterproofing solution due to the scale and layout of the roof areas, which were largely open plan with limited penetrations. Large membrane roll sizes allowed extensive areas to be covered efficiently, while automatic welding equipment ensured consistent, high-quality seam integrity. The light grey membrane was selected to complement adjacent buildings and provide enhanced solar reflectance compared to darker alternatives. Careful attention was paid to detailing around internal gutters, rainwater outlets, parapets, abutments to precast panels, free-standing handrails and designated anti-slip walkways to ensure longterm waterproofing integrity.
In addition to technical design support, Icopal worked closely with RTL UK GROUP to quantify project materials and coordinate distribution logistics to align with the time-sensitive programme. The refurbishment of the roof on the east stand of Swansea Stadium, which saw the like-for-like replacement of the original Brett Martin Marlon CS polycarbonate sheets, not only addressed weather damage but also restored the light transmission of the roof, improving the spectator experience.
The roof was replaced in 7 weeks with zero disruption to matchdays.

For the pitched roof specification, Braddus Homes therefore chose to use Proctor Groupâs air permeable, low resistance underlay Proctor Air.
As an air permeable, low resistance (APLR) underlay Proctor Air allows the passage of both air and moisture vapour. This combination of qualities reduces condensation risk in roofs and avoids the need for separate roof ventilation products, as the underlay provides a more consistent flow of air than standard roof vent products.
Proctor Air has a BBA certificate, and has been assessed against the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI). The underlay is also one of six Proctor Group products covered by an environmental performance declaration (EPD).

Water ingress can lead to significant issues over the lifecycle of a building, including structural deterioration, internal damage, reduced thermal performance and costly remediation. A W1-tested system demonstrates that the wall build-up has been tested and shown to resist water penetration under severe exposure conditions effectively. Pyroguard worked in close collaboration with Carey Glass and specialist contractor Williaam Cox to develop and deliver a fully certified system. Superglass launches new packaging
Superglass, glass mineral wool insulation manufacturers and part of the Etex Group, has launched new packaging across its full product range, cutting ink usage by up to 93%.
This initiative supports its sustainability commitments under Etexâs Road to Sustainability 2030 framework, building on a 7.75% reduction in carbon intensity achieved in 2025. West Ham Community Health & Boxing Club in Newham, described locally as âan East End legend since 1922â, is being restored by young volunteers under the tutorship of professional mentors, helping them gain vital trade skills.[1]

The project will see the volunteers gain vital trade skills, which means the project is not only revitalising a historic community space, but giving those involved the chance to learn on the job and take steps towards employment. supports young people aged 14â24 who are NEET or at risk. Participants gain hands-on experience, work towards recognised City & Guilds qualifications and build pathways into work. Karen Viccars has joined as Specification Manager for the Greater London area and Campbell McGregor as Specification and Sales Manager for Scotland and northern England.

Metal-web and I-Joists are two popular choices for new builds and both play an important structural role in buildings â supporting floors and roofs to transfer their weight evenly to the walls and beams below.
Metal-web and I-Joists are engineered joists that offer greater span lengths, improved strength and rigidity and more consistent quality when compared to their solid timber counterparts.
I-Joists, also known as engineered wood joists, consist of top and bottom flanges made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL) or solid wood. These are connected by a vertical web made of Natural Fibre Boards (NFB) or oriented strand board (OSB).
For standard housebuilding projects, a popular specification is either a 253mm Metal-web or a 240mm I-Joist. Both will provide similar structural performance. Metal-web joists are constructed to meet the exact requirements of each dwelling, so take longer to manufacture. I-Joists are manufactured at volume offsite in a variety of depths and widths.
They can be cut to exact lengths to fit each house type and are lighter in weight than both solid timber joists and Metal-web joists.
Where insulation is installed between joists it is important that no areas are left uninsulated.
Metal-web joists have a gap between the two wooden flanges that should therefore be insulated. I-Joists do not have this gap, and it is easier for insulation to form around the âIâ shape of the joist. Metal web joists tend to have a cost premium due to increased production and assembly time. I-joists generally just need to be cut to their required length.

Tried and tested barrier products from the FIREFLYÂŽ range were employed by a long-term member of the manufacturerâs established installer network during the run-up to Christmas, in order to upgrade the roof-space of a twostorey residential building in Sheerness belonging to the Southern Housing Group.
The four flats on Richmond Street, dating from the 1960s are traditionally built and in a good state of repair, but the design of the roof-space was deemed not to fully comply with current Building Regulation requirements, prompting the social housing landlord to bring in Bracknell based PiLON - as a specialist contractor with a large number of its operatives who have undergone the FIREFLYÂŽ training courses on an annual basis.
The site manager for PiLON, Gabriel Predescu, commented: âSouthern makes extensive use of the FIREFLYÂŽ range across its stock while we have installed the Zeus and other barrier products on multiple
projects in the past.
