Manager Matthew Hallam, switching to Dennis ES34R battery mowers has delivered practical benefits across matchday operations, working conditions and surface management.
Hallam, who has been at the club for seven years and manages four staff across two sites and four pitches, says the move from petrol to battery was initially driven by sustainability, but the day-today gains quickly became just as important.
“The move to electric was mainly for sustainability - being greener and more environmentally responsible,” he says. “But it also made a massive difference operationally.”
One of the clearest advantages has come after games, when the ES-34R is used to clear debris from the pitch.
“After games, we use the mower to clean up all the dead grass and material moved around by players’ studs,” says Matthew.
“With the old petrol machines, we had issues with the media asking us to turn them off because they were too noisy. With the battery
machines, that problem has completely gone. We can clean up without any disruption.”
The quieter operation has also improved conditions for the grounds team, with lower noise, less vibration and reduced air pollution.
The ES-34R has also become an important part of the club’s approach to presentation and plant health.

The Football Foundation celebrates 25 years of funding grassroots pitches
The Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation is celebrating the impact of its funding on grassroots pitches, the first pitches where many journeys in football begin, both on the pitch and behind the scenes.
Twenty-five years ago, a unique partnership between the Premier League, The FA and Government formed the Football Foundation.
Thanks to the ongoing support of funding partners, the Foundation has invested over £1 billion towards achieving this goal, delivering the grassroots sports facilities that communities up and down the country need and deserve.
Pictures from grassroots clubs across the country show where many journeys in football begin, including that of Football Foundation Supporter and Manchester City Football Group Director of Grounds and Landscapes John Ledwidge, who started out as an apprentice groundsman at Coventry City.
From those early days in the Midlands, Ledwidge’s career has taken him to some of the biggest clubs in English football. What began as an apprentice groundsman’s role has taken him through some of English football’s biggest clubs, including Aston Villa and Leicester City, before arriving at Manchester City. Today he serves as Director of Grounds and Landscapes for City Football Group, overseeing the pitches used across the organisation’s global network of clubs and facilities. John is also a proud supporter of the Football Foundation, backing its work to improve grassroots facilities across the country.
Back in Coventry, where that journey first began, the Football Foundation has continued to invest in the facilities that help football thrive. In 2003, £500,000 was contributed towards Coventry City’s new stadium, while further grants totalling around £130,000 were awarded to the club’s Community Trust in 2008 and 2012, supporting
grassroots football and helping more people across the city get involved in the game.
Stories like Ledwidge’s show how many careers in football start at local clubs and community facilities, places that help shape futures and give people their first opportunities in the game, whether as players, coaches, grounds staff or volunteers.
John Ledwidge said: “My career in football began as an apprentice groundsman at Coventry City, spending most of my time out
on the pitch learning the job properly. You realise pretty quickly how important good facilities and a good surface are for the players. For me that pitch was the start of a career in football, and investment in places like that helps create those opportunities.”
Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, added: “For 25 years, thanks to funding from the Premier League, The FA and Government, the Football Foundation has been supporting communities to transform
grassroots pitches and facilities. But behind every great grassroots pitch are dedicated grounds people like John who give their time and care to keep the game going.
“But sometimes clubs and organisations need vital funding to support this. By providing grants for 3G pitches and changing facilities, grass pitch improvements and goalposts, we want to ensure every community has a great place to play.”

Terrain Aeration have treated all kinds of turf surface for waterlogging, compaction and panning, from sports fields, golf courses and bowling greens, to trees in London parks, green spaces and the gardens of new house builds.
The machine hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil and a
blast of compressed air is released to fracture and fissure the soil.
On the tail end of the air blast, dried, milled seaweed is incorporated and this expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil, keeping the fractures open.

Club enjoys steady growth with Suståne
Like most, the objective for James Cleaver – Course Manager at Stratford Oaks Golf Club – is to achieve year-round consistency when it comes to plant health and play quality.

is the sole reason but it’s the only thing that was done differently and something we’re looking to explore further.”

RM21 Combo drives new levels of productivity

A practical path away from petrol with Kress UK
After more than 25 years in the industry, Mike Day knows exactly what he needs from his gardening equipment.
“We’re now fully battery, and that’s only really been made possible by Kress,” he explains. “Their charging infrastructure and CyberTank system is something no other brand is offering in the same way. Without that, we’d probably still be using petrol.”

Lush, late spring and early summer grass growth can be a challenging time for those operators trying to keep on top of their mowing cycle, not to mention a challenge for the mowers themselves.

Club replaces trusty Jacobsen mower after 20 years with LF570 fairway mod
The team at Carnwath Golf Club in South Lanarkshire took such good care of their Jacobsen LF3800 fairway mower that it delivered 20 reliable seasons and more than 6,000 hours of service. The original machine was supplied by Fairways GM, making the neelw LF570 a repeat purchase for the club — albeit one separated by two decades.
All good things eventually come to an end, and this season Head Greenkeeper Davie Cowan decided to call time on it. When the moment came to choose a replacement, the latest equivalent, the
Jacobsen LF570, was the obvious choice.
Fairways GM’s Area Sales Manager, Stuart Cameron, supplied the new machine.
“We just wanted more of the same,” said Davie.
“We got it at Easter and are cutting fairways once a week until temperatures rise and we move to twice weekly. We could see instantly the difference it made. New technology means it’s quicker, sharper, has more horsepower — 44 hp instead of 35 hp — but essentially, it’s a better version of a good machine.”
Carnwath is a fine parkland course with rolling greens, gently undulating fairways and wide countryside views.
“With a clear run, and a push on, we will be able to get all 18 fairways done in a day. However, as the season gets busier you must put golfers’ needs first and we will be delighted with 16 and this quality of cut.”

Baroness retains championship quality of cut
Maintaining top-flight playing surfaces across a large, multiuse facility demands more than just quality turfcare equipment – it requires absolute reliability, operational efficiency and a consistently high standard of finish.
For The Vale Resort, Baroness has become an increasingly important part of that equation, with the recent delivery of four LM551 fairway mowers adding to the finesse delivered by four LM331 surrounds mowers already at the venue.
Recognised as one of Wales’ most prestigious resorts, the site nestled among the Vale of Glamorgan countryside has undergone significant expansion over the years. Within the 650acre private estate is a hotel, health and racquets club used by leisure members and six football and rugby pitches, for training by the FAW and WRU. Under the longstanding involvement of Head Greenkeeper Mike Bevan, the golf element has grown from a modest nine-hole layout into two 18-hole championship courses, maintained by a team of 12 greenkeepers.
“We try to limit the sharing of equipment between departments as, when you get a break in the weather, it tends to be the same machines that are in demand sitewide” explains Noel Werner, Golf Manager at the Vale Resort.
“This drove a conscious decision to invest in equipment that is dedicated for golf. In exploring
the options available in the mower market with the support of Geraint Richards at GJR Machinery, the quality of cut from Baroness stood out immediately.”
“We purchased four LM331 mowers in 2022 which are used daily during the main growing season on banks, tee and green surrounds and other peripheral areas. These mowers tick a lot of boxes – not just the quality of cut they deliver and the fact they stay on cut incredibly well, but from a maintenance and servicing perspective everything is super simple to work on.” Noel adds, “Their reliable performance is invaluable to us as such a busy resort where downtime just isn’t an option.”
Building on the success of the LM331’s, the club expanded its Baroness fleet further in October 2025 with the purchase of four LM551 mowers for the fairways. While winter conditions have limited their usage to date, expectations are high for the season ahead.
“The whole team are really looking forward to getting them out when new season growth arrives. Based on our experience with the surround mowers, we’re confident they’ll deliver the same precision, consistency and reliability on the fairways.”
