The recent Women’s Rugby World Cup will be remembered as a landmark moment for the sport, not just for the thrilling final and the team’s unforgettable win, but for the story that unfolded behind the scenes.
For the first time, the Grounds Management Association (GMA) brought together 15 women from across the industry to take complete ownership of pitch preparation throughout the tournament.
From start to finish, this all-female team was entrusted with full responsibility for delivering the playing surface, making decisions and setting the standard for what a collaborative, inclusive approach to grounds management can achieve.
These women oversaw every detail as the Allianz Stadium team deliberately stepped back, empowering the team to make independent decisions and showcase their expertise. Their work resulted in a world-class pitche that allowed players to perform at their absolute best, a contributing to the high quality of play and ultimately, the Red Roses’ incredible victory.
“This project gave us the freedom to try things, make decisions,
Fifteen women lead the pitch prep for a historic World Cup win GroundsFest 2025 raises the bar again
GroundsFest 2025 cemented its place as the UK’s largest industry trade show after just three years, with an incredible 9,037 visitors over two days.
The event’s rapid growth was clear for all to see: more exhibitors, more visitors, and more innovation than ever before.
The show offered hundreds of brands, cutting-edge product launches, and a community spirit that made GroundsFest stand out.
From world-first product launches to interactive demonstrations, GroundsFest once again proved
and trust our instincts,” said Liddy Ford, a member of the group’s leadership team, “It was empowering to know that every choice we made, from how we prepared the surface to how we presented it on matchday, had a direct impact on the game. Seeing the players lift the trophy on a pitch we delivered was an amazing moment.”
Jenifer Carter, Director of Communications and Marketing at the GMA, reflected on the wider impact: “This was a landmark moment not just for rugby, but for the entire grounds management industry. An all-female grounds team at a game of this magnitude, the biggest Women’s Rugby World Cup Final ever, shows how far we’ve come.
“As well laying the foundations for the players on the pitch, this event was also about continuing to lay the foundations off it. Encouraging more women and girls to consider grounds management as a career is vital. You have to see it to be it – and we hope we’ve inspired the next generation to get involved.
“The women on the team for the final have raised the bar for what’s possible. It sends a bold signal about where we’re heading.”
itself as the home of forwardthinking solutions.
Over 30 hours of free education were delivered across five seminar theatres, with top speakers providing invaluable insights and CPD points for attendees. The Landscape Zone, in partnership with BALI, was significantly busier than in 2024, with packed-out education sessions on design, planning, and outdoor construction. Many seminars became talking points throughout the halls, sparking fresh conversations and new collaborations.
As the tournament came to a close, the team left with a shared commitment to work together to raise the profile of women in grounds management, to encourage more female professionals to join this sector, and to ensure opportunities like this continue to grow.

It is an interesting time for the industry for many different reasons, not least moving from one trade show to another in a fairly short period.
No sooner had GroundsFest closed its doors in September then thoughts began turning to SALTEX 2025 at NEC Birmingham in November. Indeed, we have several products launched at GroundsFest featured in this issue, as well as a preview of the GMA’s flagship event.
The comparatively close proximity of the two events also makes it possible to draw a few comparisons in the coming weeks.
As an exhibitor at GroundsFest, our team felt the show was a huge success. From the initial effort of getting our stand put together on the Monday, through to the two days of the exhibition itself, it was a very busy, enjoyable and vibrant few days.
The diverse mix of exhibitors, covering landscaping, amenity, groundscare, play and activity and all points in-between, attracted an interesting and enthusiastic mix of visitors. The visitor numbers quoted by GroundsFest’s organisers are impressive, not least because this is still only the third year the show has been running.
And there is no doubt that the combination of indoor exhibition spaces and outdoor demonstration areas is working for the industry, both manufacturers and visitors alike. That vibrant, fun atmosphere was certainly evident across both days and feedback from fellow exhibitors remained largely upbeat.
Fast forward to this month and we are preparing to make another visit to Birmingham for the latest SALTEX show. We have a preview this month about what visitors can expect from the exhibition and seminar programme, but the visitor experience will be important to judge as well. SALTEX continues to justify its place on the exhibition calendar for many in the industry, as does BIGGA’s event BTME in January. But the increasing presence and popularity of GroundsFest is a significant factor.
Elsewhere this month, we also take a look at a variety of product areas, from ATVs, UTVs & Work Trucks, to Water Management and Battery Power. There is also the usual mix of industry news and product launches.
Have a good month everyone.

Kubota’s bigger and better zero-turn range
The recent expansion of the Kubota zero-turn mower range has made the line-up one of the most comprehensive in the market – and one of many highlights in the Kubota groundcare portfolio.
Responding to market demand, the range has increased from two to seven models offering a variety of working widths, discharge options and fuel types to suit all domestic and commercial applications.
Kubota’s zero-turn offering combines unbeatable
manoeuvrability with accurate, quality cut performance making them a popular choice for local authorities and professional landscapers as well as residential users. With the addition of five new models in recent years, the range now offers more versatility than ever before.
Highlights of the established petrol models are the Z1-421 and Z2-481, which feature a 42” and 48” side discharge cutting deck respectively, with optional mulching kits available.
Launched in summer 2024 is the Z4-541 – a 54” petrol model which boasts a larger chassis to offer even greater productivity to the proconsumer market. Hot on its heels was the rear discharge Z4-541RD model, introduced later in 2024, to meet customer requirements.
In the diesel range, the well established ZD-1211 provides comfort and fast working with excellent fuel efficiency, meeting all the needs of the professional operator.
Safer parks is the aim of a new campaign to end harassment
Keep Britain Tidy and the Green Flag Award are working with the University of Leeds and the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to support a new campaign: Safer Parks: Stand Up Against Street Harassment.
This new campaign, running from 17 September to 15 October 2025, aims to create a community of active bystanders and make our parks safer and more inclusive for everyone.
The Green Flag Award has created a free toolkit to support local action.
Park staff across England and Wales are to be trained in intervention techniques when they spot cases of women experiencing different forms of harassment in public spaces.
Bystander training for people who work or volunteer in these spaces follows research by the University of Leeds which concluded that most women and girls feel unsafe in parks in some situations.
Using Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award network to engage parks staff and volunteers; this tailored training uses scenario-based learning to enhance bystander intervention in public parks. It stands alongside the broader campaign.
Dr. Anna Barker from the School of Law spearheaded the project. Whilst the UK’s 27,000 parks provide essential green spaces for exercise, socialising, relaxation, and active travel routes away from busy roads, some one in six women feel unsafe in parks
Those looking to meet productivity requirements with a sustainable power source can find the answer in Kubota’s Ze electric zero-turn range. Offering new levels of user comfort
through reduced noise and vibration during operation, the Ze-421 and larger Ze-481 are designed to exceed the expectations of environmentally conscious customers such as contractors and local authorities whilst still maintaining the performance expectations of conventional fuels.

GKB Combitool delivers yearround excellence
A GKB Combitool has proven the solution to improving surface quality, and reducing reliance on hired equipment, at Norfolk’s Langley School.
during daylight hours, a ratio three times higher than men.
Dr Barker said: “Allowing harassment to go unaddressed lets injustice persist. Everyone—from park managers to community groups—can play a role in making parks safer. This training equips people, everyone from park staff to members of the general public, with the skills to intervene safely and effectively.
“Rolling out bystander training across parks in England and Wales is a crucial step toward creating safer public spaces for women and girls. By equipping individuals with the tools to recognise and respond to harassment, we can make a real impact in reducing harassment and ensuring parks remain welcoming for all.”

Senior Groundsman Phil Cook leads a team of four in maintaining 19 hectares of school grounds –made that much easier with the versatility of the 4-in-1 implement which has taken presentation of the sports pitches to new heights.
Working closely with Stuart Paterson at Ernest Doe & Sons, the school built a package of machines – including the GKB Combitool –for delivery in October 2024.
“I hadn’t had any previous experience of GKB, but when I saw the brochure and the build quality of the unit, it was an easy decision. In practice, it has more than lived up to expectations. It’s incredibly solid, reliable and easy to use enabling us to brush, rake, roll and spike our 10 winter sports pitches year-round and, in springtime, our cricket outfields on a weekly basis.”
He adds, “Because of the size of the
site, we sometimes used to struggle with moving clippings. Now, we can follow the mower with a single pass of the GKB Combitool, rake the clippings up and leave an immaculately presented surface in its wake.”
The delivery also couldn’t have been better planned for Phil and the team, with the Combitool landing
just in time for Langley’s annual rugby festival which attracts teams from across the UK.
The quality and value delivered by the GKB Combitool has certainly left a strong impression, leading Phil to look at other areas of their maintenance programme.

HTA welcomes EFRA Committee report on UK-EU trade borders
The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has welcomed today’s publication of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee report, ‘UK-EU Trade: Towards a Resilient Border Strategy’, which finds that the UK’s commercial animal and plant imports system is “inadequate” and that “Defra has no effective system of oversight for [biosecurity] border controls.”
In its summary, the EFRA Committee warns: “This failure has presented, and continues to present, real
threats to the biosecurity of British animals and plants and the viability of our agricultural and horticultural sectors.”
Committee Chair Alistair Carmichael MP said: “In our scrutiny of the control and inspection of commercially imported animal and plant products through UK borders, we found high compliance by law-abiding companies, despite the high costs the system imposes on them and even though they have been subject to uncertainty, shortnotice changes and unexpected additional costs. While
these companies show high compliance, they do not have confidence that the system is operating fairly.
“The other side of the coin is enforcement by the relevant authorities and here we found that, despite the best efforts of the operating teams and management, the operations are failing, leaving the UK’s biosecurity at serious risk and allowing opportunities for criminal enterprise.
“Our report describes the numerous problems and inadequacies which are making it impossible for the designated authorities to do their job. These problems arise from a failure by successive governments to appreciate the gravity of the threat, listen to stakeholders, address problems in real time and to understand that, even in a time of scarcity these operations must be adequately funded.”
The HTA strongly supports this call, warning that without proper funding for enforcement teams, illegal and mis-declared goods will continue to enter the UK unchecked, putting plant health and supply chains at risk.
Sally Cullimore, HTA Technical and Trade Policy Manager, said: “This report is a wake-up call. Despite soaring costs and ongoing supply chain disruption, our members have gone above and beyond to comply with the rules – yet they are paying the price for a system that isn’t working.
“We fully support Alistair Carmichael MP’s call for fair and consistent enforcement, backed by properly resourced teams protecting the UK’s borders. Without this, illegal and mis-declared goods will continue to slip through, putting plant health at risk.
“The Committee’s recognition of our evidence, particularly our recommendation to adopt a hybrid inspection model, is welcome, but we now need prompt action to ease the current situation before the SPS/Plant Health agreement with the EU is in place. The Point of Destination system needs to be swiftly reintroduced as an easement, as the current burden is too great for our members. Any delay risks further damage to an industry that is key to achieving the UK’s environmental targets.
“UK environmental horticulture relies on more than £780 million worth of plant imports annually, with 79% of nurseries sourcing from the EU. Getting this right is essential to safeguard plant health, secure supply chains, and protect the future competitiveness of our industry, while maintaining the variety that UK consumers have come to expect.”

Golspie finds vital versatility from the ISEKI TG 6507
For Golspie Golf Club, maintaining a course that blends Links, Heathland and Parkland demands machinery that can do it all.
That’s why Head Greenkeeper Muir Ross turned to the ISEKI TG 6507 from Fairways GM. A versatile, reliable tractor that delivers value, comfort, and ease of use across every corner of the course.
On any given day, the TG 6507 could be fitted with the front loader for topdressing, handling the vertidrain, or hooked up for spraying
duties. With a lift capacity of around 1.5 tonnes, Muir knows the tractor is comfortably equipped for every task the club demands now and in the future.
That versatility is matched by simplicity. The IQ gearbox enables Muir and his team to set a precise working speed, eliminating the need for clutch control. “The IQ gearbox is a great feature because it’s a bit simpler, you don’t need to worry about clutches or anything like that,” Muir explains.
“Ease of use nowadays is a big thing for just about any golf course,
especially for training purposes. Someone had their first time in the tractor today spraying, and after a quick briefing from myself, he didn’t have any problem at all. Everything is right there for you and very easy to understand.”
Operator comfort also plays its part in day-to-day efficiency. The TG6507 has built its reputation as one of the most versatile tractors in the ISEKI range. Powered by a 50hp Stage V engine, it delivers the strength needed for heavy-duty turf implements while remaining fuel-efficient and compliant with modern emission standards.
The IQ dual-clutch gearbox offers smooth, clutchless operation with a choice of automatic or manual modes, giving operators flexibility and control. With a high lift capacity, powerful PTO, and the option of a fully airconditioned cab, it’s a machine designed to meet the daily demands of golf courses, sports turf, and grounds teams alike.
Ultimately, Muir sees the TG 6507 as an investment in both performance and peace of mind. “It’s vitally important to know through Fairways
and ISEKI themselves that build quality and reliability are there. They’re just solid, hardworking tractors that do
what they say on the tin. It’s as simple as that.”

Fencing solution acts as effective retainment tool
The new Birkdale Terra Shield Pro system is a purposebuilt and practical means of managing soil and level changes between boundaries and properties.
Combining two tasks in one modern retainment fencing solution, it comprises the easy to install and robust Commercial DuraPost fence posts and the unique DuraPost Z-boards, to create a strong, stable and attractive installation that will last.
An all-in-one solution,
provides a simple and costeffective alternative to installing a fencing system above a brick retaining wall. Designed with high quality materials to offer strength and durability, Commercial DuraPost fence posts are constructed from cold rolled pre-galvanised steel and the DuraPost Z-board from GFRP - a high-quality composite with excellent UV resistance. Both materials offer high mechanical strength, corrosion and impact resistance.
The unique Z-boards are used to create the retainment height
required, and these slot easily into the Commercial DuraPost before the fencing panel of choice is installed. Z-Board fixing spacers are an optional product and can be slotted onto either end, providing a good surface to fix to, and adding further stability.
In addition, depending on ground conditions, a dampproof membrane can also be lapped between the retained earth and the Z-boards, reducing the risk of water runoff and weed growth.

In November 2015 the Heavitree Brewery Plc completed an extensive new paved beer garden as part of the brewery’s refurbishment and redevelopment of the George & Dragon Pub in Dartmouth.
GS Architects designed a plan that included 25mm calibrated, random-sized, black limestone paving, with a central millboard walkway and 100mm granite sett paving for the main entrance and drop kerb to the road.
The brewery aimed for a VIP Opening in November, ahead of the busy Christmas period. As a result, the building contractor needed to finish pointing and complete the paving researched the products they needed to complete the scheme in just two days and contacted NCC Streetscape.
The decision to use GftK vdw 850plus was primarily made for two important reasons. Firstly, the timescale meant GftK vdw 850plus was the only solution able to meet the deadline in the November conditions as it can be applied quickly and easily in wet weather.
Secondly, the brewery needed a paving jointing material that was tough and fully able to resist exposure to frequent pedestrian traffic, including high heels, plus frequent accidental spillages of food and drinks. It also needed to be fully resistant to de-icing salts in winter and the necessary frequent cleaning to maintain hygiene for alfresco dining.
The use of GftK vdw 850plus also allowed all 200m2 of the paving jointing works to be prepared, applied, cleaned off, and completed, in less than four hours despite the rain. Additionally, the main street entrance and drop-kerb to the pub was paved in 100 mm granite setts with 25 mm wide joints.
The performance of GftK vdw 850 after being fully exposed for 10 years to high pedestrian and regular vehicle traffic for access is remarkable.
The daily jet-washing continues, and the paving jointing is good to continue for many more years.

Hunter Irrigation delivers turf excellence for club
Blackpool FC has seen major improvements to both its stadium and training ground facilities following the installation of a new Hunter irrigation system, supplied by KAR UK and installed by Arden Lea Irrigation.
Head Groundsman Paul Flynn, who has been with the club for nearly five years, explained how the Hunter products have transformed operations, saving time, improving turf quality, and supporting player performance.
Blackpool’s system includes the Hunter ACC2 Controller with Centralus, the Hunter GT-885, and the Hunter I80-ON sprinklers.
The ACC2 Controller with Centralus allows Paul and his deputy to manage irrigation directly from their phones or via a roaming remote, giving them ultimate flexibility.
“We can press a button and water exactly where we want, whenever we want,” Paul explained. “It makes growing, training preparation, and recovery so simple. We’ve now
got around 62 heads across the site, so we can literally water every blade of grass.”
The Hunter I80-ON heads, installed at Bloomfield Road Stadium, have already improved coverage and performance compared to the old system. The GT-885 sprinklers at the training ground provide strength, durability, and easy access for maintenance – crucial for a high-use facility.
The improvements in irrigation have gone beyond aesthetics, directly impacting player welfare and training quality.
Managers have also benefitted, with the ability to prepare pitches to replicate match conditions.
“The current manager says the best thing is that the training pitches now resemble the stadium pitch,” Paul added. “It means we can mirror match situations and even put the sprinklers on during sessions to improve ball speed – something we could never do before.”

SALTEX, the UK’s cuttingedge sports turf, grounds care and landscaping exhibition, is set to welcome one of the most recognisable sporting personalities, James Haskell, for an unmissable Learning LIVE and Clubhouse DJ session on day one of the show.
Held at the NEC Birmingham on 12-13 November 2025, SALTEX promises a vibrant mix of industry insight and entertainment. Haskell, a former England international rugby player, will join the stellar Learning LIVE line up and deliver a keynote session. His talk will explore the parallels between elite sport and professional development, touching on leadership, resilience and the importance of adaptability in highperformance environments.
As a former professional athlete, James understands first-hand the critical role highquality playing surfaces play in
elite performance, and he brings a genuine appreciation for the work of grounds staff and turf professionals at all levels.
He is one of the best-known rugby players and sportspeople in the UK, having played 77 times for his country, as well as competing internationally and for the British and Irish Lions. He’s known as much for his ability on the field as for his personality off it.
James will also perform an exclusive live DJ set at the SALTEX Clubhouse to kick off Happy Hour on the afternoon of Wednesday 12 November. Known for his love for electronic music and high-energy performances, he set is said to bring ‘Café Mambo vibes’ to Birmingham - blending uplifting house beats with a relaxed, Ibiza-inspired atmosphere. The Clubhouse offers visitors a unique opportunity to unwind and network in a vibrant, informal setting.
The SALTEX Clubhouse has been revamped for 2025 to provide even more opportunities to unwind. Open throughout the show, it will host informal meetups and specially designed networking events to help visitors build meaningful relationships.
James Haskell said: “I’m really looking forward to joining everyone at SALTEX this year. I know first-hand the difference that world-class pitches make to performance, so it’ll be great to share my experiences from the professional game with the people who make it all possible.
“High performance isn’t just about elite sport and sportspeople, it’s about mindset and finding ways to bring out your best every day. I can’t wait to dive into that with the visitors, and then round things off with a DJ set in the Clubhouse.”
“We’re absolutely delighted to have James Haskell joining
us at SALTEX 2025,” said Sarah Hunter, Head of Events at the Grounds Management Association. “He is one of the UK’s most recognisable sporting personalities and brings a wealth of experience from the very highest levels of performance, both on and off the pitch. His session will offer valuable insight into resilience and mindset but also provide plenty of entertaining stories.
“Adding someone of James’ stature to an already fantastic Learning LIVE programme just shows the breadth of knowledge and inspiration visitors can expect at this year’s show. And of course, what better way to round off the day than with James swapping the microphone for the decks to kick-start Happy Hour in the Clubhouse Bar. It’s going to be a real highlight of the show.”

Council upgrades grounds maintenance fl eet with Major
Leeds City Council manages the city’s parks, green spaces, roundabouts and roadside verges, as well as some school sports contracts, all within the city boundary.
Covering over 43 square miles, Leeds is the third largest city in England. Recently, the council replaced its ageing gang and rotary mowers with fifteen new Major MJ71-400 3PL Roller Mowers, supplied through GGM of Colne, Lancashire.
Visit the Major stand (F090) at SALTEX to see the MJ71-400 and other models from its professional grounds maintenance range.
The Leeds upgrade was driven by the need for more effi cient, reliable equipment. According to
Workshop Engineering Manager Stephen Whiteside, machines are typically replaced every five years to minimise maintenance costs and downtime. When reviewing tenders, the council considers warranty, delivery, after-sales service, lifetime expectancy and cost - with cost being the main factor.
The MJ71-400 offers a three-year warranty, competitive pricing and proven durability from previous Major models used by the council. Importantly, the new mowers improve performance: unlike gang mowers that often left grass clippings behind, the MJ71400 pulverises and returns them to the turf, leaving a cleaner finish.
With a 4.0m working width, folding wings for easy transport
and a capacity of up to 11.4 acres per hour, the mower is highly efficient. Its six rotors and twelve blades operate at 75 metres per second, ensuring clippings are finely chopped. Built from Strenx 700 MC steel and hot-dip galvanised, the machines are both lightweight and exceptionally strong, offering long-term resistance to wear and corrosion.
By investing in the Major MJ71400 fleet, Leeds City Council has modernised its mowing operations, ensuring greater efficiency, durability and cost savings. The new machines will support high-quality green space management across the city, delivering better results for residents while maximising value.

Polaris Elevates RANGER
Line-up for 2026
Leading off-road vehicle manufacturer Polaris has unveiled a host of user-inspired upgrades to its 2026 RANGER line-up - with the Nordic Pro Edition models at the heart of the enhancements.
For those working in the landscape and amenity sector, where unpredictable weather and varying terrains are part of the job, the new Nordic Pro Edition is designed to make long days more productive, comfortable, and safe.
The RANGER Nordic Pro Edition has long been a popular choice for professionals who need reliable
performance in all conditions. For 2026, Polaris has taken it a step further by introducing a factoryinstalled, 360-degree cab system as standard across the RANGER 570, 1000 and XP 1000 Nordic Pro platforms.
This full cab setup includes a roof, tip-out windshield, rear panel, and full doors with manual-crank windows to provide complete protection from wind, rain and cold. Added to this is an in-cab heater and defrost system, ensuring yearround climate control and a clear view, whatever the conditions.
Also fitted as standard is a Polaris Engineered heavy-duty winch, offering added peace of mind for those moments when a tough job requires extra pulling power. New for 2026, the vehicle is also finished in a striking new Blue Dusk colourway.
“Professionals in the landscape and amenity space often spend long hours outdoors, exposed to the elements,” says Richard Coleby, Polaris UK National Sales Manager.
“The new Nordic Pro Edition has been designed with
them in mind, ensuring operators can stay warm, dry and comfortable while still having all the strength, load capacity and reliability that Polaris is known for. It’s about improving wellbeing for workers while also boosting productivity.”
Polaris is the best-selling UTV in the UK and the new 2026 range will help to strengthen that position.
Coleby adds: “When you’re asking your kit to work as hard as you do, having a machine that can keep up –and keep going – makes all the difference. That’s why Polaris continues to be the brand professionals turn to.”
Beyond the Nordic Pro Edition, Polaris has also
rolled out a major functional upgrade across other 2026 RANGER models including a new Gen 2 transmission. This delivers 50% easier shifting, reducing strain on operators and ensuring smoother, more reliable gear changes. This will be particularly important for those jumping in and out of vehicles multiple times a day.
It’s a change that might seem small on paper but will make a big difference to day-to-day usability and operator comfort.
The updates to the RANGER line-up reflect Polaris’ commitment to riderinspired innovation. “The latest announcements to the RANGER line-up are a direct result of our dedication to enhance every aspect of ride quality, putting the
rider at the centre of product development,” said Rodrigo Lourenco, Vice President Off Road Vehicles Sales, EMEA.

The future of battery power for professional landscapers
The landscaping industry is at a turning point.
With growing pressure to cut emissions, reduce noise, and improve efficiency, many contractors are rethinking their reliance on petrolpowered equipment.
But for professionals, switching to battery has often meant compromising on runtime, performance, or durability. That’s where Kress stands apart.
Unlike consumer-grade tools rebranded for professionals, Kress has engineered its battery platform from the ground up for commercial use.
The result is performance that not only rivals petrol, but in many cases surpasses it. Landscapers can now achieve the same power and productivity they rely on, without the fumes, vibration,
and costly maintenance of traditional engines.
The cornerstone of Kress’s advantage is its innovative 8-minute CyberSystem charging technology. While other brands leave crews waiting hours for batteries to recharge, Kress delivers rapid turnaround, meaning fewer batteries are required to keep a full team running all day.
This is a game-changer for high-output landscaping businesses where downtime simply isn’t an option.
Durability is another decisive factor. Landscapers demand tools that can withstand relentless daily use in all conditions. Kress Commercial tools are engineered with rugged housings, advanced cooling systems, and longlife batteries designed for thousands of charge cycles, with an industry leading
commercial warranty to back it up. It’s professional kit, built to last.
There are also compelling business benefits. Lower fuel costs, reduced servicing, and longer tool lifespans all add up to significant savings.

School chooses the Dennis ES-510 for cricket pitches
It has been a season like no other at Oundle School.
Not only have the grounds staff prepared surfaces for the school’s extensive fixture list, but they have also supported Northants Cricket Academy.
These achievements come against the backdrop of one of the most challenging starts to the year for grounds professionals nationwide.
To help meet these challenges, Oundle School has recently invested in the Dennis ES-510, part of Dennis’ pioneering E-Series battery-powered mowers, supporting both performance and sustainability.
For Sam Wyles, who has been part of the grounds team for over a decade, the season highlighted just how vital the right machinery can be.
“I’ve been here for 10 years and we’ve always had a lot to manage, but with 259 matches this summer, it was on another level. We knew early on we needed a mower that could handle long days, give us flexibility and help us reduce the strain on the team. The ES-510 hasn’t disappointed.”
The decision to switch from petrol-powered equipment to a battery-powered mower was not made lightly. The team carried out research, spoke to colleagues at other schools and tested options. After a successful demonstration
from Dennis’ sales manager, Jason Briggs, the school chose the ES-510.
“We did some research and found that the ES-510 had a really good battery life. We’ve had friends and colleagues in other schools that have used the machine and it came highly recommended; it hasn’t disappointed. It's built to last and robust.”
For the team, the benefits quickly became clear: low noise, zero emissions, reduced HAVs and longlasting battery power.
“We use a lot of petrol-powered machinery and we're finding that we need to reduce HAVs wherever we can. So, we've moved to batterypowered equipment and this has not disappointed. The ES-510 doesn't
need much of a grip to hold onto it, so there’s less strain on your wrists and the reduced handle arm vibration levels have really been noticeable.”
One of the unexpected wins was just how much easier it became to work around the busy school environment. “Noise levels are an issue for us. The quieter machine has made it a lot easier. We can start a bit earlier without affecting anyone else around us.”
With zero emissions and a full day’s battery life, the mower supported the school’s sustainability ambitions as well as its practical needs.

EGO introduces top-handled chainsaw
EGO Power+, a leading batterypowered outdoor power equipment specialist, has expanded its range for arborists and forestry professionals with the addition of a top-handled, high-performance professional chainsaw.
Boasting a lightweight design, the 30cm CS1200E chainsaw is the ideal tool for tree-care specialists working off the ground.
Equipped with a 20m/s chain speed, this top-handled chainsaw has a thin chain, which is ideal for the fine cutting of trees and crucially, reduces the risk of disease spreading through trees as the finer cut reduces the likelihood for fungus to grow in the grooves, left by the cut.
Joerg Bauerle, Product Manager at EGO, shares: “Arborists were front of mind when we were designing this
chainsaw. Small, lightweight, and well-balanced, we have responded to requests from our tree surgeon customers, for a chainsaw that is specifically designed for working high up in the trees.”
The chainsaw easily cuts through branches and logs whilst providing stability, allowing professionals to be more controlled in a volatile environment. This saw is fi tted with a chain brake system to protect from a potential kickback, providing extra safety for the tool operator.
Fitted with an oil level and translucent window to help users monitor the tool, the CS1200E automatically lubricates the chain and maintains the health and lifespan of the tool, preserving it from damage. The oil tank has a 150ml capacity, which will need topping up depending on the frequency of use.
Joerg continues: “Our latest tophandled chainsaw focuses on balance, ensuring that arborists can go about their work comfortably for longer periods. At EGO, our tools are innovatively designed to deliver power, performance, and competitive run times.”

The
beyond the limits of equipment on steep inclines could be a thing of the past following the introduction of Tiltmaster to the UK groundcare sector. The three different models available can be quickly fitted to any machine providing a constant supply of working angle information to ensure the operator stays working safely within their machines capabilities. The three different models are Tiltmaster C for Compact Tractors (0-15 degrees), Tiltmaster D (0-25degrees) and Tiltmaster Extreme for specialist machines (0-45 degrees). Tiltmaster, now available from as little as £39 plus VAT, is a simple and effective method of providing additional health and safety data to users of groundcare and other machinery. Simon Richard Ltd
Battery equipment is becoming a fixture for many groundcare fleets, as operators progress from trialling a single hand tool to using the complete armoury of brushcutters, blowers and hedge trimmers, and even to pedestrian and ride-on mowers.
The ability to deploy a single battery system and even a specific battery in several machines is a signifi cant attraction and EGO Power+ has focused its developments in this area.
Earlier this year a whole new raft of equipment was launched by the company, from a site radio to a ‘semi-professional’ walkbehind rotary.
All use EGO’s common battery and charger system, and many can be operated with identical batteries, depending on the run time required.
We asked operator David Kinnersley to test two machines from the range that would be of interest to grounds maintenance contractors or estate managers –the PRO X multi-tool power head with line trimmer attachment and the BSP3500E backpack sprayer, both using the 5.0Ah battery.
The backpack sprayer required little assembly on delivery and David felt that the set-up and battery charging instructions were clear. The charger produces
an audible hum when working, so may be better used away from rest areas etc.
Featuring a 15 litre tank, double filtration system, stainless steel wand and choice of four nozzles, the sprayer is capable of applying pesticides or carrying out cleaning tasks.
“I felt that the sprayer was very balanced and easy and comfortable to use with its well-padded harness,” commented David. “It’s ideal for spot weed treatments, but I can also see it being used in the glasshouse with a flat fan nozzle. As the pump is battery powered rather than using a lever, pressure is constant, giving an even application.”
The tank sits steadily on its base for filling, but David felt that the battery – which is housed in a compartment in the front of the tank – was potentially vulnerable to spills and splashes, as the plastic cover is not sealed. Once on the operator’s back, the battery charge level can’t be seen, although EGO quotes 120 minutes of use.
It was a quick switch of the battery to the PRO X multitool, which required a little more assembly, such as fitting the loop handle. This was equipped with the STA1700 43cm line trimmer, and tested on long grass and light scrub.
David felt that the multitool was robustly made and
well-balanced with its carbon fibre shaft. It has a 1600W brushless motor and PCB to give the equivalent power to a 35cc petrol engine.
“The three speed control and variable speed trigger gives fi ne control of power once you get used to it – you don’t need to press too hard,” said David. “It’s very easy to swap the attachments, and with this much power to hand, I’d be keen to try it with a brushcutter blade to tackle heavier undergrowth.”
A neat feature is the digital display which shows both the speed selected, and on a smaller indicator, battery charge level. EGO quotes 140 minutes of line trimming with the 5.0AH battery. There’s
also a Bluetooth indicator showing its connection status for diagnostics.
More accustomed to using a harness with a cowhorn brushcutter, David also commented on how lightweight the PHX1600 felt by comparison with a petrol trimmer.
“With the common battery and ease of switching between implements, I can certainly see why operators are increasingly moving over to battery power tools,” he said. “Charging was simple and quick, and the multi-tool is a convenient way of powering a number of attachments.”
