MPs call for new focus and funding to get nation moving more

A renewed commitment to PE in schools, ending the 3pm Saturday blackout for women’s football and the removal of unnecessary ‘No Ball Games’ signs are among the recommendations in a new report from MPs aimed at getting people to move more.

The calls for action are included in the Culture, Media and Sport Committee’s wide-ranging Game On report, after a more than yearlong inquiry discovered a patchy picture of how well community and school sport is meeting the needs of people in England.

The report outlines how strong demand, committed volunteers and successful local initiatives exist alongside persistent financial pressures, limited facilities and a lack of prioritisation in the school curriculum.

Calling for a decisive national commitment to stable funding, better facilities and a crossgovernment strategy to deliver a healthier nation, the Committee argues that investing in sport delivers social and economic benefits that will lead to

significant savings in the health and welfare budgets.

With the UK lagging behind the average of other European countries, the report recommends that the Government increases the 0.3% share of total government expenditure on sport and recreation to at least 0.6% over the next ten years.

On top of pressing for a new approach by Government and an increase in spending, the report makes a series of practical recommendations aimed at increasing participation and boosting activity levels for people of all ages.

Support for BIGGA’s Mental Health First Aid Programme

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) is proud to announce Baroness UK and Kubota (UK) Ltd as headline sponsors of its Mental Health First Aid Programme (MHFAP).

Developed in response to the well-documented pressures faced by greenkeepers and turf professionals, the programme delivers accredited training designed to equip members with the skills to recognise and respond to mental health challenges in themselves and others.

Long hours, seasonal demands, and often isolated working environments mean those employed in turf management can be at increased risk.

BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said the support would play a key role in strengthening an already important area of the association’s work.

“Through this programme, we are providing practical, accredited training that gives people the confidence to recognise when something is

wrong and to step in with the right support at the right time,” he said.

“The backing of Baroness and Kubota allows us to extend that support further, ensuring more members across our regions can access this training and help us build a stronger, more connected network of Mental Health First Aiders within the industry. This will make the industry a better place for all.”

said: “We’re a country of sport lovers when it comes to supporting our stars at home and abroad, but there are too many barriers stopping people from getting up and giving it a go themselves at school and clubs in our communities. What we need is a national shift in the way we think about sport and a commitment at all levels to deliver a healthy and more active nation.

“While the Government has a major part to play in coordinating policy and committing to spending, our report sets out steps big and small, from ensuring access to for people of all ages to sports like bowls, pickleball and padel through social prescribing to waging a war on No Ball Games signs, that could make a genuine difference to participation.”

Further recommendations include those aimed at lightening the administrative burden on volunteers and introducing greater planning protections for playing fields and sporting facilities.

DCMS Enquiry 1

It is timely that an influential committee of MPs has set out recommendations to improve access to grassroots sport and PE in schools.

As the main football and rugby seasons draw to a close and other sports like cricket, tennis and golf gear up for a busy summer, the importance of those often volunteer-led grassr oots clubs and organisations also come into focus.

For every national and international event staged over the next few months, the games played on club pitches and community green spaces and parks will play a role in highlighting the importance of groundscare and the skills, knowledge and experience of those tasked with preparing surfaces.

This month, we have our regular Professional Groundscare supplement and as you will have seen in the last issue we have launched a new quarterly title – Let’s Talk PG – which aims to expand our usual product-focused coverage with more detailed and informative technical articles.

In this month’s supplement we take a look at some key areas for the industry, including a special spotlight on Grass Cutting Equipment, a feature on Brushcutters and the latest from the ever-expanding Battery Power segment. There are also the usual industry news and case studies and some key new product launches.

Elsewhere this month, we take a look at the growing demand for ATVs, UTVs and Work Trucks and the machinery solutions that meet a wide variety of tasks and requirements. There is also a spotl ight on Workwear & Protective Clothing.

We have our usual coverage from the wider industry, such as a look at Hard & Soft Landscaping, as well as a round-up of the latest product-focused news.

So, as we all gear up for warmer weather (hopefully) and a busy summer of events from grassroots to elite level, we have the best advice and product solutions you will need.

Have a great month everyone.

HTA launches new benchmarking study into wages and workforce trends

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has launched a Wages & Labour Benchmarking Study on its new platform, giving members across retail, growing and landscaping a valuable opportunity to benchmark their workforce metrics against industry averages to gain insight into wages, recruitment and employment trends across the sector.

Exclusively available to HTA members, the study will support access to robust benchmarking data that enables businesses to measure their offering against averages for similar organisations and make more informed decisions.

The launch of the study comes at a time when labour costs remain a key challenge for many UK horticultural businesses. Recent increases in the National Living Wage and National Insurance Contributions alone are estimated to have added £134 million to industry costs, reinforcing the importance of access to reliable, sector-specific data.

Delivered through the HTA’s Member Benchmarking Platform,

the study enables participating members to compare their businesses with averages for business peer groups by region and business type. It covers wages, staff costs, recruitment methods, benefits and key HR metrics such as vacancy rates, absenteeism and staff turnover, offering practical insight to support both day-to-day management and longer-term planning.

The study is split into three modules - Wages & Staff Costs, Workforce & Vacancies, and Recruitment & Retention, with each module designed to take around five to ten minutes to complete, making it quick and straightforward for members to contribute. Businesses can also assign multiple users to input data, with secure access controls in place to ensure information remains confidential and anonymised.

Once sufficient data has been collected, interactive reports will be published on the platform, with full access to detailed regional and national benchmarks available to contributing members. Over time, members

EGO’s tabless Lithium MAX battery unveiled

EGO has developed its first battery featuring advanced tabless cell technology.

Allowing for faster charging, enhanced power and little-to-no downtime, the 8Ah BA4480X Lithium MAX battery joins EGO’s market-leading 56V platform for cordless outdoor power equipment.

Designed for power-hungry tools and demanding applications, the Lithium MAX can deliver up to 40% more power than an equivalent 8Ah battery using standard cells, which makes light work of larger mowing, trimming, cutting and blowing tasks for both professional and domestic users.

Built for long-lasting performance, the battery boasts a two-times longer lifecycle and when it does need charging, it can do so within just 20 minutes using the EGO PGX2500PB Power Bank – reducing the need to carry more batteries.

With a multitude of benefits, the market has begun to see the benefits of lithium-ion batteries with tabless technology. The tabless lithium-ion cells in the new EGO battery have

a reduced resistance which allows energy to be transferred faster without generating heat inside the battery cells, which in turn increases the battery’s lifespan. Coupled with EGO’s unique ARC cooling technology, even under high load, the cell temperature remains lower compared to standard designs.

Another benefit is that the battery can be charged immediately after use, with no need for a cooling phase, promising shorter charging times and less downtime between tasks.

Andrew Frohock, IoT Product Manager for EGO, said: “Built for regular use and largerscale gardening projects, this exciting new addition to our 56V system delivers increased power, faster charging and smarter control to maximise performance and productivity. Fully interchangeable across our entire product range, the ARC Lithium MAXT battery provides flexibility, efficiency and longterm value for professional and serious users.”

EGO Power + Enquiry 6

will also be able to compare their performance year-on-year as data builds, further strengthening the value of the tool as part of ongoing business planning.

Laura Loveridge, Market Research Manager at the HTA, said: “Benchmarking gives businesses valuable context to help them understand how they’re performing compared to others like them and where there may be opportunities to improve. This new study is a great opportunity for members to access meaningful data on wages and workforce trends, while also contributing to a stronger, more representative picture of the sector.”

The data gathered will also contribute to the HTA’s wider evidence base, supporting its work with policymakers, including engagement with the

Low Pay Commission on future wage rates, and helping to ensure the sector’s voice is backed by real business insight.

Environmental horticulture is predominantly made up of SMEs operating on tight margins, with limited ability to absorb rapid cost increases. Access to benchmarking data will help them to better understand these pressures in context and respond effectively.

The study is open for participation from 22 April for an initial period of approximately two months, with interactive results published as soon as sufficient sample sizes are reached.

New sustainability assessment tool

The GroundsFest Academy, in collaboration with John Moverley OBE, has launched a free online sustainability assessment tool designed to help organisations evaluate and strengthen their sustainable practices.

Sustainability is increasingly becoming a core requirement across the industry, yet many organisations are still uncertain about what practical steps they should be taking. The new tool has been developed to help address this challenge by providing a straightforward first step for businesses and

organisations to generally assess where they currently stand.

Through a series of simple questions, the online tool enables users to assess how well their organisation is performing, identify what more could be achieved with existing resources, and discover the skills and information already available to them. It also helps highlight areas where further improvements might be made.

Developed by GroundsFest Academy with input and advice from John Moverley,

the initiative brings together practical industry knowledge with a clear focus on supporting organisations at every stage of their sustainability journey.

John is widely recognised as one of the amenity industry’s most respected voices and brings a breadth of experience across all areas of the sector. An elected Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies, he also holds honorary Fellowships from both the University of Central Lancashire and Myerscough College.

Redesign of workwear safety range

HAIX, the global functional shoe and clothing specialist, has redesigned its entire workwear safety portfolio, engineered to provide the right shoe for every professional need –from warehouses to major construction sites.

The revamped footwear lineup introduces a streamlined range

built around XLR8, a suite of technologies that enhance comfort, control, and energy efficiency throughout the working day.

The refreshed Black Eagle and Airpower XR models will be organised into three application-led categories – ‘Safety’, ‘Heavy Duty’ and ‘Heavy Duty Extreme’ – based on the level of protection required

and demand of the job at hand. These three lines have one goal: to offer maximum control, stability and performance for workers.

With these clearly defined categories, selection is made easier for both end users and procurement teams.

Women protected from unsafe work gear

Up to 250,000 women will now be protected from unsafe working equipment following a GMB campaign.

Women’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is often men’s equipment shrunk to a smaller size - referred to as ‘shrink it and pink it’ - which doesn’t fit women’s bodies, is completely unfit for purpose and often dangerous.

As many as 70 per cent of women suffer from ill-fitting

protective equipment, with tens of thousands feeling unsafe, embarrassed and scared at work, according to a GMB survey.

Lynsey Mann, GMB National Health and Safety Officer, said: “Women having proper PPE that fits their bodies isn’t just a matter of respect – it can be a matter of life and death.

“These employers prove fit-to-form PPE isn’t just a possibility, it is already a

reality in workplaces where safety is paramount.

“The next step is for other employers to get ahead of the inevitable curve and for our elected officials to embed inclusive PPE into procurement practices.

“Only then will our safety equipment standards reflect the diversity of our modern workforce and truly keep our members safe.”

Bobcat safety footwear makes it mark

The new Bobcat Safety Footwear collection channels the bold innovation and trusted legacy of Bobcat – a global leader in compact construction equipment - into a fresh offering for the ‘underserved middle’ segment of the safety footwear market.

Designed to deliver on style and performance, the range prioritises exceptional comfort. Unlike conventional foam or gel insoles that merely cushion impact, each design features advanced energy-returning LeafSpring Technology that actively disperses pressure across the foot with every step.

Independent testing by the Shoe and Allied Trades Research Association (SATRA) has shown that technology improves impact

shock absorption by up to 46%, delivering industry-leading protection and outperforming competing insoles by as much as 30%.The result is reduced fatigue, improved posture, and all-day comfort – a gamechanger for busy workers who spend long hours on their feet.

The Bobcat Safety Footwear range has been carefully structured around five engineered outsole series - Delta, Summit, Forge, Bastion, and Keystone - each named after iconic American industrial locations and designed for specific working environments.

Featuring over 13 distinct styles and spanning 27 SKUs with safety ratings from S3S to S7L, the range also includes purposebuilt women’s styles, designed on bespoke lasts to ensure proper fit and support, rather than simply scaled-down versions of men’s boots.

Peter Lawson, Brand Manager at Bobcat Safety Footwear, said: “Comfort is the number one driver in safety footwear purchases - 70 percent of customers say it is their top priority. Tradespeople often spend long hours standing on hard surfaces, increasing the risk of plantar fasciitis and severe heel pain. That’s why we have incorporated SpringLeaf Technology which stops pain before it starts. This isn’t just another boot – it’s a solution customers can’t get anywhere else.”

Every piece is designed around the realities of site life: kneeling, climbing, lifting, stretching and working through all conditions.

The difference is in the detail - durable fabrics, highquality components and smart detailing that improve comfort, flexibility and longterm wearability. Performance

Notts County benefits from Dennis battery mowers

For Notts County Grounds

Manager Matthew Hallam, switching to Dennis ES34R battery mowers has delivered practical benefits across matchday operations, working conditions and surface management.

Hallam, who has been at the club for seven years and manages four staff across two sites and four pitches, says the move from petrol to battery was initially driven by sustainability, but the day-today gains quickly became just as important.

“The move to electric was mainly for sustainability - being greener and more environmentally responsible,” he says. “But it also made a massive difference operationally.”

One of the clearest advantages has come after games, when the ES-34R is used to clear debris from the pitch.

“After games, we use the mower to clean up all the dead grass and material moved around by players’ studs,” says Matthew.

“With the old petrol machines, we had issues with the media asking us to turn them off because they were too noisy. With the battery

machines, that problem has completely gone. We can clean up without any disruption.”

The quieter operation has also improved conditions for the grounds team, with lower noise, less vibration and reduced air pollution.

The ES-34R has also become an important part of the club’s approach to presentation and plant health.

Hallam also values the machine’s controls and battery monitoring, which help make day-to-day work more precise and professional.

The decision to invest in Dennis was reinforced by a longstanding relationship with the brand.

The Football Foundation celebrates 25 years of funding grassroots pitches

The Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation is celebrating the impact of its funding on grassroots pitches, the first pitches where many journeys in football begin, both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

Twenty-five years ago, a unique partnership between the Premier League, The FA and Government formed the Football Foundation.

Thanks to the ongoing support of funding partners, the Foundation has invested over £1 billion towards achieving this goal, delivering the grassroots sports facilities that communities up and down the country need and deserve.

Pictures from grassroots clubs across the country show where many journeys in football begin, including that of Football Foundation Supporter and Manchester City Football Group Director of Grounds and Landscapes John Ledwidge, who started out as an apprentice groundsman at Coventry City.

From those early days in the Midlands, Ledwidge’s career has taken him to some of the biggest clubs in English football. What began as an apprentice groundsman’s role has taken him through some of English football’s biggest clubs, including Aston Villa and Leicester City, before arriving at Manchester City. Today he serves as Director of Grounds and Landscapes for City Football Group, overseeing the pitches used across the organisation’s global network of clubs and facilities. John is also a proud supporter of the Football Foundation, backing its work to improve grassroots facilities across the country.

Back in Coventry, where that journey first began, the Football Foundation has continued to invest in the facilities that help football thrive. In 2003, £500,000 was contributed towards Coventry City’s new stadium, while further grants totalling around £130,000 were awarded to the club’s Community Trust in 2008 and 2012, supporting

grassroots football and helping more people across the city get involved in the game.

Stories like Ledwidge’s show how many careers in football start at local clubs and community facilities, places that help shape futures and give people their first opportunities in the game, whether as players, coaches, grounds staff or volunteers.

John Ledwidge said: “My career in football began as an apprentice groundsman at Coventry City, spending most of my time out

on the pitch learning the job properly. You realise pretty quickly how important good facilities and a good surface are for the players. For me that pitch was the start of a career in football, and investment in places like that helps create those opportunities.”

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, added: “For 25 years, thanks to funding from the Premier League, The FA and Government, the Football Foundation has been supporting communities to transform

grassroots pitches and facilities. But behind every great grassroots pitch are dedicated grounds people like John who give their time and care to keep the game going.

“But sometimes clubs and organisations need vital funding to support this. By providing grants for 3G pitches and changing facilities, grass pitch improvements and goalposts, we want to ensure every community has a great place to play.”

Terrain Aeration relieves waterlogging

Terrain Aeration’s Terralift concept has been in service for over thirty years.

Terrain Aeration have treated all kinds of turf surface for waterlogging, compaction and panning, from sports fields, golf courses and bowling greens, to trees in London parks, green spaces and the gardens of new house builds.

The machine hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil and a

blast of compressed air is released to fracture and fissure the soil.

On the tail end of the air blast, dried, milled seaweed is incorporated and this expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil, keeping the fractures open.

The result is relief from waterlogging and healthier turf, with minimum disruption during the treatment.

Club enjoys steady growth with Suståne

Like most, the objective for James Cleaver – Course Manager at Stratford Oaks Golf Club – is to achieve year-round consistency when it comes to plant health and play quality.

A steady, reliable nutrition programme has become a key part of that effort and, over the last 18 months, Suståne’s 5-2-4+Fe slow-release naturel base fertiliser has played an increasingly important role.

“When it’s wet in the winter and difficult to get a sprayer round, switching to a natural-based granular product meant fewer trips around the course and less reliance on spraying during those periods” says James. “After trialling Suståne’s 5-2-4+Fe in autumn 2024, we emerged in the spring in a healthier place which then encouraged us to up the applications to four or five times a year – focusing on the high disease pressure windows.”

Noting the success of their Suståne applications, James highlights one particular result which came following last year’s severe drought. “We had one green which really struggled without irrigation. I spoke to Suståne’s Russell Riley who suggested putting down some extra 5-2-4+Fe to help with the recovery and, interestingly, we’ve noticed that this is the only green which has emerged into 2026 disease-free. Obviously we can’t say for certain that Suståne

is the sole reason but it’s the only thing that was done differently and something we’re looking to explore further.”

5-2-4+Fe is the original Suståne formula, developed in 1988. Its allpurpose nature makes it ideal for a range of sports turf and landscape applications, providing a quick green up followed by long lasting slow-release organic nitrogen.

ICL expands H2Pro TriSmart range

ICL Turf & Landscape UK & Ireland has introduced H2Pro TriSmart Granules and H2Pro TriSmart Tablets, extending its TriSmart surfactant technology beyond liquid applications.

The new formulations provide turf managers and landscapers with additional options for managing localised dry patch and improving water distribution in turf surfaces.

Both products are based on ICL’s TriSmart triple-action surfactant technology, designed to help water spread more evenly, penetrate the soil profile and be retained for longer.

This supports more consistent moisture levels, slows the rate of dry-down and aids faster rewetting in affected areas.

Aimee Davey, Marketing Communications Manager for ICL Turf & Landscape UK & Ireland said: “The addition of granule and tablet formats gives turf managers greater flexibility in how they apply TriSmart technology. These options allow for more targeted management of dry patch, particularly in areas where liquid applications may not be practical.”

H2Pro TriSmart Granules and Tablets can be integrated alongside existing TriSmart liquid programmes, enabling users to select the most appropriate application method for different conditions and site requirements.

Smarter height control transforms wide-area mowing

In professional grounds maintenance, efficiency and consistency are everything.

Whether maintaining sports pitches, public spaces or large estates, operators are constantly balancing productivity with presentation.

One of the most routine - and often repeated - parts of the job is adjusting height of cut.

Trimax’s OptiAdjust system is designed to make that process faster, easier and more precise.

Available on the Pegasus S5, Trimax’s OptiAdjust allows operators to control cutting height directly from the tractor via the Trimax Connect app. Using a Bluetooth connection to a mobile device or tablet, height adjustments can be made quickly and accurately without leaving the seat.

The ability to adjust “on the fly” supports a more responsive

approach to mowing. Operators can adapt to changing turf conditions and site requirements as they happen, maintaining consistent results across multiple locations in a single pass.

For Buckinghamshire-based contractor MW Agri, one of the first UK businesses to invest in OptiAdjust through local dealer George Browns, the benefits have been immediate.

Covering around 250 acres each week - from polo grounds and sports pitches to parks and private estates - efficiency is critical. Before OptiAdjust, managing director Malcolm Weaver and his team were manually adjusting cutting heights several times a day.

“We were sometimes changing the height three or four times a day,” he explains. “That meant stopping, getting out, often lying on wet grass - it all adds up.

MM Seed delivers proven performance

Managing one of the busiest multi-sport facilities on the south coast is no small task – especially in a region increasingly defined by prolonged dry spells and intense seasonal wear.

At Bournemouth University, Grounds Manager Alex McCombie relies on proven seed performance and trusted technical support to keep standards high across a hugely demanding site.

“We’re a university, but we’re also a massive community campus,” Alex explains. “We’ve got fixtures midweek and weekends, and on some days, we’ll have multiple matches on the same pitch. We’re talking around 5,000 users every week, so wear tolerance and recovery are absolutely critical.”

Situated on an extremely freedraining site, Bournemouth University benefits from excellent winter playability – but summer conditions are increasingly challenging.

“From Easter through to October we hardly had any rain at all,”

says Alex. “That’s great in winter, but in summer it puts huge stress on the grass. We need something with genuine drought tolerance that can also stand up to relentless wear.”

That need led Alex to MM Tetra Sport, a specialist overseeding mixture consisting of tetraploid ryegrasses, designed specifically for high-quality sports turf.

“Tetra Sport has been a bit of a no-brainer for us,” he says. “It establishes quickly, it wears well, and it stood up incredibly well during a brutal summer. I was genuinely impressed.”

The mixture delivers fast germination, rapid sward establishment, and excellent winter and summer colour, while offering high disease resistance and strong wear tolerance. The inclusion of new, highly rated cultivars, exclusive to the MM range, has been particularly important at Bournemouth University, where pitches see continuous use.

MM Seed Enquiry 38

“Now we can adjust heights on the move through the Connect app without stopping or leaving the tractor. It’s a contractor’s dream. The time saving is amazing - I’m saving around an hour and a half a day, which is effectively another job.”

The Connect app has proved straightforward to integrate into daily routines. MW Agri quickly adopted preset cutting heights, allowing operators to store and name settings for specific sites - making it easy to switch between requirements at the touch of a button.

As mowing technology continues to evolve, systems like OptiAdjust reflect a wider shift towards smarter, more connected equipment - helping operators work more efficiently without compromising on quality.

First AS 920 ESherpa 2WD mowers put to use

The AS 920 ESherpa 2WD electric ride-on mower for tall grass is going into series production.

The first machines are currently rolling off the production line and are already being delivered to customers.

AS-Motor is thus the first manufacturer to bring a production-ready, batterypowered ride-on mower for tall grass with a swappable battery system to the market.

The AS 920 ESherpa 2WD operates with a powerful 56-volt swappable battery system and a total capacity of 16 kWh. The electric drive and blade system delivers a mowing performance that even exceeds that of a combustion engine. 13 kW peak power at the mower deck

ensures enormous cutting force and an excellent cut.

The AS 920 ESherpa 2WD also impresses with its powerful and efficient two-stage wheel drive, delivering a torque of 600 Nm.

A key advantage of Ariens’ powerful FusionCore battery system is the ability to use it across multiple machines.

The interchangeable batteries of the AS 920 ESherpa 2WD are compatible with the professional zero-turn mowers Zenith E and Arrow E from sister brand Ariens. This allows for optimal seasonal use and utilisation, thereby significantly reducing the investment costs.

RM21 Combo drives new levels of productivity

Managing three separate sites with just four full-time staff would stretch almost any grounds team - but at Leicester Tigers, the introduction of the RM21 Combo robotic marker and mower, supplied by Agrovista Amenity, has transformed efficiency, quality, and day-to-day workflow.

For Head Groundsman Ed Mowe, who oversees the stadium pitch, three pitches and an indoor facility at the training ground, plus the women’s training centre at Oakes Park, the time spent on routine pitch marking alone had become a major pressure point.

“We were spending around seven hours a week just marking out,” Ed explained. “That’s one person’s full working day gone. With only four of us across three sites, we needed a smarter way of working.”

A trial of several robotic systems followed, but the RM21 Combo,

supplied by Agrovista Amenity with full technical support, training, and backup from XDC, stood out immediately.

While Ed initially sought a robotic line marker, the multifunction capability of the RM21 quickly set it apart.

“It gave a really good mark, and the lines were spot on,” he said. “But the added benefit of the mowing deck and the fact we can add attachments like a dew brush made it a no-brainer. Instead of just being a marker, it’s a multi-tool we get far more out of.”

The team now uses the robot to mark four pitches across the men’s and women’s training facilities and to cut surrounds and soil-based training surfaces when staffing is tight.

A practical path away from petrol with Kress UK

After more than 25 years in the industry, Mike Day knows exactly what he needs from his gardening equipment.

“We’re now fully battery, and that’s only really been made possible by Kress,” he explains. “Their charging infrastructure and CyberTank system is something no other brand is offering in the same way. Without that, we’d probably still be using petrol.”

At the centre of the operation are two Kress Commercial pedestrian mowers – the KC720 with a 47cm cutting deck and the KC711 with a wider 51cm deck. Both machines share the same commercial-grade platform, delivering up to 3kW of power and high torque from zero rpm, which Mike says is immediately noticeable in day-today use.

“We push them to the absolute limits,” he says. “If we’ve got lawn renovations and the grass is kneehigh, we just put the side discharge chute on and away we go. The mower just cuts through everything.

The Versatility of the Grillo FD 2200TS

The Grillo FD 2200TS is a commercial out-front mower with collection, offering exceptional output in both large open spaces and tighter areas thanks to its excellent manoeuvrability, short wheelbase and tight turning radius. Its permanent 4WD system with automatic diff-lock, 155cm cutter deck, 1,400-litre high-tip grass box and powerful 47hp Yanmar engine make it incredibly capable in all conditions, particularly when cutting and collecting in wet weather.

Using the rotary deck attachment, we now collect all of the leaves during autumn with just one operator, saving significant man hours elsewhere on the course. Its adaptability is one of the machine’s greatest strengths - it is never left sitting unused in the shed.

Kevin O’neill from Howley Hall said “When purchasing machinery for the golf course, it is essential that the equipment can perform the task efficiently while remaining simple for the greenkeeping team to operate. Our Grillo FD 2200TS has certainly delivered on both fronts.

Originally purchased as a scarify collector to help manage rough areas and encourage finer grasses, the machine has become an invaluable part of our maintenance programme. Alongside other management techniques, it has enabled us to carry out turf management to a very high standard.”

There’s nothing we’ve put them on that’s made them struggle.”

That power is backed up by a robust build, including a reinforced steel deck and a self-propelled rearwheel drive system with adjustable speeds up to 6.4 km/h, allowing the team to maintain a steady pace across different sites.

“They’ve never cut out, not once,” Mike adds. “There’s no drop in performance or sign of it bogging down, they just keep going – even in wetter conditions.”

For Mike, though, performance means little without a quality finish. Both mowers feature a precision cutting system with a 20 - 80mm height range and a two-point adjustment, allowing the team to adapt quickly to different conditions.

Combined with Kress’ LiftStream deck design, which improves airflow and maximises collection, the mowers also help streamline routine tasks.

Superb mower for an elite turf finish

The CS Pro with a 3m working width has further elevated the reputation of specialist landscape contractor RA Country Services, which serves prestigious estates and sports facilities across South East England.

Based in West Sussex, RA Country Services has provided high-end grounds care for more than twenty years. Thanks to its reputation for delivering a consistently high-class finish, the company is regularly engaged by elite clients seeking the very best in turf and landscape maintenance.

“We have an extensive customer base requiring the upkeep of

high-quality football, rugby and cricket pitches,” explained owner Richard Amer. “Grassland management is a big part of our work, along with equine paddock maintenance. We always go the extra mile so our clients can be proud of their grounds.”

Three years ago, Richard identified a need to upgrade machinery. His existing finishing mower failed to deliver the required standard and, with a 1.8m cutting width, limited daily output as demand increased.

Following advice from dealer Farol Ltd, RA Country Services invested in a Major MJ65 300 CS Pro. The fully mounted

rotary mower is designed for compact tractors, handling dense vegetation and rough grass while still producing an exceptional finish on fine turf.

Its performance comes from a unique blade system: four rotors and 16 overlapping blades operating beneath three pivoting decks, ensuring a flawless cut across the full width. Front and rear rollers level the surface, reduce scalping and help mulch clippings evenly.

“The finish is a league above our previous mower,” said Richard. “It’s easily the best I’ve seen.”

With a 3m cutting width that folds to 2m for transport, the CS Pro pairs comfortably with the company’s 50hp John Deere 3046R tractor, offering ease of transport and greatly improved productivity.

Built from Strenx 700 highstrength steel with a fully galvanised, belt free design, the CS Pro is durable, low maintenance and built to last.

“It’s ideal for professional turf contractors,” Richard concluded, “and makes a real difference where finish and output matter.”

Toro entrusted by AFC Bournemouth

As the first team moves into AFC Bournemouth’s new training complex at Canford Magna, a new fleet of Toro machinery arrives to look after the first four pitches to be built.

The machinery choices by Head of Grounds Ian Lucas are strategically made on how to cut more efficiently according to European regulations and meet the Premier League standards in place for all pitches.

Ian explains, “The products we chose come with adjustments to match the width of cut to

the pitches exactly. The Toro Reelmaster 3100 with Sidewinder, which is usually a mower favoured by golf clubs for cutting around bunkers and obstacles, allows us to mow as efficiently as possible with no overlap.”

It’s a machine also favoured by other premier football clubs, says Ian: “I visited other training centres and saw how other clubs had fitted a wider arm kit on the Sidewinder but without the wider front units meaning they could cut 30 inches across instead of 26. That meant they the cutting width worked better with the

required striping pattern within the dimensions of the pitch.”

The patented Sidewinder technology brings more benefits than that to the football pitch though as Ian continues: “Being

able to use the Sidewinder cutting unit from left to right brings a more even weight distribution eliminating wear marks.”

Multiple mowers –one traction unit

Lush, late spring and early summer grass growth can be a challenging time for those operators trying to keep on top of their mowing cycle, not to mention a challenge for the mowers themselves.

Depending on the prevailing weather, spring growth can be unpredictable. A mower that was adequate in a previous year, with medium growth, can be found wanting in subsequent years if its wet and warm and the grass grows faster than mowers can keep up.

Buying job or condition specific mowers is now a financial challenge for many as higher horsepower emission legislation has pushed up the price of traditional out-front rotary & fairway mowers.

Ventrac has found hundreds of customers in the UK willing to

try something different. The 4520 18.6kW (25hp) traction unit can accept eight different mower attachments, each specifically designed to utilize Ventrac’s quick mount system allowing one operator to change from one mower to another in a few minutes.

James Pickless, Head Greenkeeper at Chelmsford Golf Course has two 4520’s, with Triplex reels, a Contour Deck and Tough Cut mower attachments to cope with all his grass conditions.

James notes that “specialized grass machinery is increasingly expensive. The appeal of Ventrac was its ability to perform two, four or even ten different jobs, offering more value for money and making it a worthwhile club investment.”

Club replaces trusty Jacobsen mower after 20 years with LF570 fairway mod

The team at Carnwath Golf Club in South Lanarkshire took such good care of their Jacobsen LF3800 fairway mower that it delivered 20 reliable seasons and more than 6,000 hours of service. The original machine was supplied by Fairways GM, making the neelw LF570 a repeat purchase for the club — albeit one separated by two decades.

All good things eventually come to an end, and this season Head Greenkeeper Davie Cowan decided to call time on it. When the moment came to choose a replacement, the latest equivalent, the

Jacobsen LF570, was the obvious choice.

Fairways GM’s Area Sales Manager, Stuart Cameron, supplied the new machine.

“We just wanted more of the same,” said Davie.

“We got it at Easter and are cutting fairways once a week until temperatures rise and we move to twice weekly. We could see instantly the difference it made. New technology means it’s quicker, sharper, has more horsepower — 44 hp instead of 35 hp — but essentially, it’s a better version of a good machine.”

Carnwath is a fine parkland course with rolling greens, gently undulating fairways and wide countryside views.

“With a clear run, and a push on, we will be able to get all 18 fairways done in a day. However, as the season gets busier you must put golfers’ needs first and we will be delighted with 16 and this quality of cut.”

Our picture shows Davie’s team of Mark, Tom and Aiden when the LF570 was delivered.

Baroness retains championship quality of cut

Maintaining top-flight playing surfaces across a large, multiuse facility demands more than just quality turfcare equipment – it requires absolute reliability, operational efficiency and a consistently high standard of finish.

For The Vale Resort, Baroness has become an increasingly important part of that equation, with the recent delivery of four LM551 fairway mowers adding to the finesse delivered by four LM331 surrounds mowers already at the venue.

Recognised as one of Wales’ most prestigious resorts, the site nestled among the Vale of Glamorgan countryside has undergone significant expansion over the years. Within the 650acre private estate is a hotel, health and racquets club used by leisure members and six football and rugby pitches, for training by the FAW and WRU. Under the longstanding involvement of Head Greenkeeper Mike Bevan, the golf element has grown from a modest nine-hole layout into two 18-hole championship courses, maintained by a team of 12 greenkeepers.

“We try to limit the sharing of equipment between departments as, when you get a break in the weather, it tends to be the same machines that are in demand sitewide” explains Noel Werner, Golf Manager at the Vale Resort.

“This drove a conscious decision to invest in equipment that is dedicated for golf. In exploring

the options available in the mower market with the support of Geraint Richards at GJR Machinery, the quality of cut from Baroness stood out immediately.”

“We purchased four LM331 mowers in 2022 which are used daily during the main growing season on banks, tee and green surrounds and other peripheral areas. These mowers tick a lot of boxes – not just the quality of cut they deliver and the fact they stay on cut incredibly well, but from a maintenance and servicing perspective everything is super simple to work on.” Noel adds, “Their reliable performance is invaluable to us as such a busy resort where downtime just isn’t an option.”

Building on the success of the LM331’s, the club expanded its Baroness fleet further in October 2025 with the purchase of four LM551 mowers for the fairways. While winter conditions have limited their usage to date, expectations are high for the season ahead.

“The whole team are really looking forward to getting them out when new season growth arrives. Based on our experience with the surround mowers, we’re confident they’ll deliver the same precision, consistency and reliability on the fairways.”

Kubota zero-turn ticks every box

Gareth Hagan, Owner of Windsor Holiday Park, knows the importance of creating a strong first impression for his guests.

That’s why, when it comes to the maintenance of the lawned areas of the site – nestled just outside of Newcastle, County Down - nothing less than a ‘bowling green’ finish is acceptable. Delivering that, alongside significant efficiency and safety benefits and so much more is a ZD1211 from Kubota.

Windsor Holiday Park is proudly a five-star, AA Goldrated resort, family owned and operated by Gareth, his wife and two children. The commitment to quality extends well beyond hospitality – it’s evident in every blade of grass across their 7-acre site. “The presentation of the grounds is what creates either the right or wrong first

impression of someone’s holiday which is why we put so much emphasis on this being perfect” he explains.

“I’ve grown up in the industry and was familiar with Kubota, so turned to Laird Grass Machinery when we needed to replace our previous mower. The team at Laird are absolutely first-class. They knew exactly what we needed and, while we knew the specification of the ZD1211 was going to be spot on, its performance has truly exceeded all expectations.

“We’ve cut our mowing time by 50%.” Gareth expands, “The productivity of this machine is outstanding, and we can navigate between the statics and glamping pods with such ease that the whole job can be done in just half a day in good weather.” The manoeuvrability of the ZD1211 has also made

the day-to-day work much safer and simpler. “Before, we had to reverse in and out of pitches, which isn’t ideal with guests and children moving around. Now, we can turn on the spot, so we’re always forward facing with full line of sight.”

From Kubota’s recently expanded Zero-Turn mower range, the ZD1211 prioritises efficiency with a 60” cutting width and hydraulic-lift deck. Its suspension seat means greater comfort and less operator fatigue – something Gareth and his team of wardens appreciate. “Gone are the days of sore backs… The seat is like nothing else on the market, you could literally have it in your living room!”

To reduce the transportation of clippings around the site, Gareth opted to equip the ZD1211 with Kubota’s mulching kit. “We

don’t have capacity to lift grass so this keeps both the site clean and the guests happy.”

He concludes, “We’ve now used the ZD1211 for two

seasons and the machine continues to impress. The presentation is consistently where we need it to be, the comments we’ve had from guests are incredibly positive

and the back up support we’ve had from Laird is second to none – it just ticks every box.”

Krinkels powers Westminster parks with Kress fleet

Krinkels UK has reinforced its commitment to sustainable grounds maintenance with a major investment in a fleet of Kress commercial battery powered equipment, supporting the upkeep of parks, open spaces across Westminster.

The new fleet, including mowers, blowers and brushcutters, was delivered to the company’s base at Victoria Embankment Gardens. The setting provided a striking backdrop for a milestone moment, as operatives were introduced to the new equipment through live demonstrations and hands-on training sessions covering both the machinery and the Kress app system.

Krinkels UK holds a major contract with Westminster City Council, making performance, reliability and efficiency essential across all operations. For Assistant Operations Director Steve Morris, the investment reflects both day-today operational needs and a clear long-term plan.

“Wherever possible, our instinct is to move towards electric equipment,” he said. “That said, we have to be realistic about what we’re delivering on the ground. We need to know that any solution can meet our contractual commitments, whether that’s power, battery life, and the practicality of carrying enough batteries for a full day’s work, and ultimately whether it represents value for money for our customers.”

“It’s important to us that we deliver a high-quality service, but also that we do so in the most environmentally responsible way possible.”

“This is a significant initial investment, but when viewed over the long term, it makes sense. It’s not just a financial investment, we’re investing in the future of the environment, and in the wellbeing of the public and our teams.”

“Westminster is a particularly important step,” added Steve.

“Operating in the heart of London brings additional responsibilities, and there is a clear ambition to move towards fully electric operations as part of wider air quality improvements. This sits alongside broader goals around greening, biodiversity net gain, and the development of connected green corridors in response to the climate emergency.”

Built for professional use, the Kress commercial range delivers the power required for demanding urban environments, alongside long run times and fast charging that help keep downtime to a minimum.

The consistent performance across the range ensures teams can work efficiently throughout the day, while low noise levels and reduced vibration improve operator comfort.

In addition, the Kress app system provides valuable insight into battery performance and equipment usage, helping teams plan more

effectively and get the most from their fleet.

Ian Harwood, Sales Director at Groundserv, the supplying dealer, has seen growing demand for highperformance battery solutions.

“We carry out demonstrations for a wide range of customers and people often say they’ve trialled other battery powered brands that haven’t quite ticked every box,” he said. “With Kress, it’s the combination of battery charging times, reduced downtime and the power of the machines that really stands out.”

For Kress UK, seeing its equipment in action across one of the capital’s most iconic landscapes is a proud moment.

“It’s amazing, a real privilege,” said Vince Jenkins, National Account Manager at Kress UK. “We’ve worked with Krinkels for around two years, supporting that transition from petrol to battery. Westminster is a prestigious and beautiful location, so to see the Kress fleet in operation here for the 2026 season is fantastic. It’s been a pleasure working together.”

As Krinkels continues the transition, Westminster marks an important milestone in the shift towards cleaner, quieter and more efficient grounds maintenance in the heart of the capital.

Timely application gives the best lawn service results

New sprayer technology is enabling Norfolk lawn care specialist Will Dunger to achieve more timely applications for customers across a wider area, at a time climate shift is reducing spraying opportunities this spring.

With soil temperatures warming up and growth potential rising, herbicide application will soon be a priority on lawns where it’s needed, but that also coincides with the busy spring period for other lawn activities.

With his Techneat SPPS (SelfPropelled Pedestrian Sprayer)

Will reports they can easily cover a hectare of more lawn spraying in a day across three to four sites. For larger scale jobs, he’s previously sprayed 1.4 hectares in less than three hours.

He calibrates the spray to operate at 400 l/ha, operating with 04 nozzles. “It’s a good compromise between optimum leaf coverage and comfortable spraying speed, with minimal risk of drift.

“We want to make sure that we get the maximum product onto the target, which is better for efficacy and minimises any risk of offtarget effects or environmental

loss,” he highlights. However, the sprayer’s multi nozzle bayonets allow a quick switch to larger nozzles for drift reduction or higher water volumes, particularly if soil target treatments are being applied.

“We are always looking at new innovations in turf agronomy from golf or sports pitch management, and how that might benefit lawn care quality. That’s where the accuracy and consistency of sprayer applications can also help.”

Kubota puts emphasis on evolution as mower range expands

In an industry that never stands still, Kubota UK is once again expanding its portfolio for the professional groundscare and landscaping industries with an even greater range of mowers.

As Matt Wilson, Kubota’s Product Manager for Groundcare, explained during a recent demonstration day, the company is “filling in the gaps” in the range to provide a wider offering than ever before.

There is also an emphasis on disproving the theory that onesize-fits-all with new machines that can adapt to multiple tasks, from flail mowing to scarification and fine turf mowing to artificial surface maintenance.

The Kubota zero turn range continues to grow and prove

popular. A mainstay of American groundscare and landscaping for many years, the zero turn is starting to literally turn heads in Europe and the UK market is increasing.

The Kubota range now stretches from the smallest, Kawasakipowered petrol engine models for large domestic and small commercial applications through the new electric model and on to the Kubota-engined diesel model that offers the perfect solution for large-scale and full-day mowing jobs.

The expansion of the Kubota zero-turn mower range has made the line-up one of the most comprehensive in the market, offering a variety of working widths, discharge options and fuel types to suit all domestic and commercial applications.

Kubota’s zero-turn offering combines unbeatable manoeuvrability with accurate, quality cut performance making them a popular choice for local authorities and professional landscapers as well as residential users.

Kubota is also reminding potential customers of the GZD model. The 12 cm deep mower deck combines a central rear discharge and ensures a quality cut and grass collection under most conditions.

The rise of new technology is something Kubota has embraced with the Ze electric zero-turn range. Offering new levels of user comfort through reduced noise and vibration during operation, the Ze-421 and larger Ze-481 are designed to exceed the expectations of environmentally conscious

customers such as contractors and local authorities whilst still maintaining the performance expectations of conventional fuels.

There is also an expansion in the FC-Series mowers, where the range now runs from a 22HP machine up to a 50HP model.

This evolution of the FC-Series range is particularly significant as Kubota is highlighting the versatility of these mowers in providing solutions for multiple tasks thanks to the growing range

of cutting decks and attachments now available.

Matt Wilson highlighted how as well as mowing applications, these models can now carry out other tasks such as scarification and aeration for natural turf surfaces and maintenance for artificial and hybrid pitches. There is also likely to be further expansion into estate managements with attachments for brushing and other requirements.

This versatility, combined with Kubota’s efficient engine

technology, is making the FCSeries a serious proposition for those looking for machines that offer multiple solutions and value for money.

Kubota is also continuing a progressive Research & Development programme that will see further expansion and improvements, from engines technology through to cutting systems, as it places product evolution at the heart of its business.

The new feature on the latest version of the Smart Connector 1.1 brings it in line with the Smart Connector 2.0, which can store the operating time that day, as well as previous days until the connector can communicate with the STIHL Connected App.

No longer holding the total working time over a number of days, this removes the need for users to upload data daily. Data

For contractors managing multiple machines across teams or sites, the system provides a clear overview of total working time and daily operating history. With automatic prompts, this enables more proactive servicing and helps reduce the risk of unexpected downtime.

The Smart Connector 1 also supports location awareness, allowing users to quickly check which tools are nearby and identify any that may be missing. An integrated LED display can be activated remotely to help locate specific machines more easily.

Through the STIHL Connected portal, users can arrange servicing with their nearest STIHL Approved Dealer and review maintenance requirements in advance, helping streamline

Kioti UK acquired by SMT GB to localise dealer support

Management of the Kioti dealer network has transferred from Pols Group in the Netherlands to SMT GB in the UK, promising improved operational efficiency and localised backing for the brand’s 58 independent dealers.

SMT GB has completed the acquisition of Kioti UK, bringing the distribution and technical support for the compact tractor, utility vehicle (UTV), and zeroturn mower brand onto British soil after 25 years operating in the UK.

Previously a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based Pols Group, Kioti UK will now leverage SMT GB’s domestic resources. The

move is designed to streamline the supply chain by handling machine preparation and administrative support from within the UK, rather than from overseas.

Kioti customers will continue to receive equipment, parts, and technical support as usual through the established network of 58 independent dealers in the UK. However, they will start to see the SMT GB name on transactional documentation, such as invoices and warranty claims.

Ryan Hollebone, director of compact equipment at SMT GB, said: “The same Kioti team will support their dealer network

exactly as they always have, while gaining the additional resources and stability that come with being part of the wider SMT organisation. Ultimately, SMT is here to help all of our partners grow their businesses.”

Patrick Desmond, general manager of Kioti UK, added: “As we celebrate 25 years of Kioti in the UK, it’s the perfect time for our next chapter. Our customers will still deal with the same team they know and trust, but with the added weight of SMT’s infrastructure behind us.”

Block paving creates dynamic outdoor space

Braemar block paving has been used to deliver a contemporary and functional hard landscaping solution for BAE Systems.

Combining a clean, modern aesthetic with robust performance, the scheme demonstrates how carefully selected paving can complement a building’s architecture while meeting the practical demands of commercial environments.

The Braemar range contributes to a cohesive, high-quality finish, aligning with the building’s contemporary façade.

For projects where sustainable drainage is a key consideration, the range also includes a permeable

Hydropave option, offering full SuDS compliance without compromising on visual appeal.

The result is a well-structured, cohesive space that meets both functional and design objectives.

To achieve the end result, Braemar block paving was carefully selected in colours Innis Black, Jura Grey, Alto Silver, and

Arran Stone to create contrast and visual interest.

By using a variety of block sizes and innovative laying patterns, the design effectively broke up and defined the distinct areas, adding both visual interest and functional structure to the space.
