PE and school sport to get £1bn boost from Government

More young people will have access to high quality PE and school sport under the government’s new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, which will bring national sporting expertise into every primary and secondary school to tackle inactivity.

The government is investing over £1 billion in school sport over the next three years, including funding for the new Partnerships Network, improvements to school sports facilities and support for primary schools as we move to the new approach.

Backed by £580 million and set to be fully up and running from Spring 2027, the Network will replace the existing PE and Sport Premium and put an end to the one-size fits all model that has failed too many children for too long, while meeting the ask of leading voices in sports education.

Responding to longstanding calls from schools, a further almost £200 million will go towards improving school sporting facilities, which could be used to make facilities more accessible for children with SEND or additional equipment, alongside a one-off £100 million PE Premium payment to support primary schools during the transition year.

Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said: “School sport builds confidence, belonging and wellbeing: priceless gifts that put kids on the path to getting on in life – and can even uncover the elite sports stars of the future.

“Yet too many children have been missing out. Our new approach will see every child – across both primary and secondary – more physically active regardless of their circumstances, background, ability or where they go to school.”

GroundsFest 2026 opens visitor registration

Visitor registration for GroundsFest 2026 is now officially open, as the industry prepares for what promises to be the biggest and most exciting edition of the event to date.

Returning to Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on 16 and 17 September 2026, GroundsFest has firmly established itself as the industry’s most anticipated event thanks to its unique combination of live demonstrations, hands-on experiences, entertainment, free education and community atmosphere.

With more exhibitors than ever before, including many companies increasing the size of their stands for 2026, GroundsFest will once again provide visitors with access to the latest innovations, expert advice, live demonstrations and hands-on experiences from across the grounds management, landscaping and amenity sectors.

One of the major highlights for 2026 will be the dedicated Landscape Zone, delivered in partnership with British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).

The new model will modernise the approach that operated successfully in the early 2000s before being scrapped in 2011 by the thengovernment. Ofsted recognised in 2011 that School Sport Partnerships improved access, participation and school-club links.

Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock said: “Our new Partnerships Network will not only mean that

children get access to high-quality PE lessons, it will also bring in clubs, coaches and sporting bodies to help physical activity become part of their everyday lives.

“Whether it’s setting them on the road to an Olympic or Paralympic dream or simply teeing them up to lead a healthy, active life, getting children engaged in sport and PE early on is vital.”

A national delivery partner will work alongside national governing bodies to provide a mixture of universal and targeted support to schools based on their needs to directly tackle the activity divide between boys and girls, and disadvantaged pupils and their peers.

The area will feature exhibitors, demonstrations, educational content and networking opportunities specifically tailored to landscaping professionals, designers, architects and contractors.

GroundsFest’s live music festival will also return with live music, street food and after-hours

entertainment helping to create an event experience unlike anything else in the industry.

GroundsFest Event Director Christopher Bassett said: “GroundsFest has always been about creating an event that the industry genuinely wants to attend, and a huge part of that is giving

visitors the chance to get hands-on with equipment and experience products properly. That’s exactly what GroundsFest delivers.

“The show offers a completely different experience to a traditional exhibition.”

Green-tech supports large-scale woodland creation scheme

Green-tech has supplied planting protection products for a 34-hectare woodland creation scheme in Cheshire, which was delivered by CLECO on behalf of a Local Authority.

The project involves establishing 37,124 native trees across a diverse mix of broadleaf and coniferous species, creating a resilient new woodland landscape designed to deliver long-term environmental and ecological benefits.

A key feature of this project is the inclusion of 42 rare genetic clones of the endangered Black Poplar, bred by Chester Zoo. These were established within parkland-style planting using tree crates as part of an agroforestry wood pasture system designed to support future livestock grazing.

Green-tech supplied a range of tree protection and establishment products to support successful woodland

establishment across the 34-hectare site.

Tubex Standard Shelters were installed across the majority of planting areas to provide protection against browsing wildlife and wind exposure, while helping to create a stable microclimate that supports the early establishment of young trees.

Shrub Guards were specified for the mixed native shrub layer, where biodiversity-led planting required additional protection for smaller whips and shrubs. These areas were designed to enhance ecological value through flowering and fruiting species, and the guards supported consistent establishment in more sensitive zones.

The 900mm hardwood stakes were used to provide durable structural support across the site, ensuring stability for newly planted trees in a range of ground conditions, including exposed locations.

Together, these products supported reliable establishment across both standard woodland planting and more complex ecological areas, including the Black Poplar parkland plots and agroforestry zones.

Working closely with CLECO, Green-tech provided a flexible and responsive supply service throughout the programme, ensuring materials were delivered in line with phased planting schedules and evolving site requirements.

Nine in ten want greener neighbourhoods, new research shows

New national polling commissioned by the Landscape Institute (LI) and conducted by Ipsos has found there to be overwhelming public interest in greener, better-connected and better-planned housing developments across the UK.

The findings highlight strong public support for a whole-place approach to development, with landscape seen as integral to what people value, rather than an afterthought once buildings and roads have been planned.

Key findings from the first phase of the Landscape Institute’s research show:

• 90% of respondents say green features between buildings and pavements are important,

• 89% say access to communal green spaces matters when choosing a home, • 83% say nature conservation is important in housing development, • 78% value features that help to better manage rainwater.

The results clearly indicate that landscape cannot be treated as an optional extra in the planning and construction of new developments. Access to communal green space and green features within streets both ranked higher in the polling than architectural design when people were asked to consider what is essential in new housing. The public’s response to the poll points towards the need for the housing developments of the future to provide benefits in terms of health, community and the environment.

Carolin Göhler FLI, President of the Landscape Institute, comments: “The findings of this public poll underline that placing landscape at the forefront of any development is a necessity for creating places that people want and can thrive in.

“Landscape is the foundation of healthy nature, thriving communities and long-term economic and environmental resilience. To build not only the quantity but also the quality of places that people deserve today, the poll confirms that a shift in thinking is needed to consider the whole area and the natural system in which a development is taking place.

“A ‘landscape-first approach’ to development delivers places with real value. Through consideration of the existing landscape and

features, integration of nature into planning and fostering community involvement, a landscape-led development, driven by chartered landscape architects, creates places that benefit both people and the planet.”

The research reinforces the Landscape Institute’s long-term vision of enriching, resilient landscapes where people and nature flourish.

People in the UK are increasingly calling for developments that are greener, better connected and better planned, and the evidence shows that landscape-led development helps deliver exactly that.

BIGGA looks to support future greenkeeping workforce

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) is inviting businesses across the turf and golf industries to support the future of the profession by becoming Friends of First Green.

Friends of First Green is a donation-led initiative designed to help BIGGA continue to grow First Green, the environmental science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education outreach programme that turns golf courses into outdoor classrooms.

Licensed by BIGGA with the kind permission of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and its Foundation, First Green enables greenkeeping teams to host guided field trips for schools, giving young people hands-on learning experiences linked to

soil science, ecology, water quality, machinery, problemsolving and the wider role of golf clubs within their communities.

The initiative is delivered free of charge to schools, helping ensure young people from a wide range of backgrounds can discover the skills, science and career opportunities involved in greenkeeping.

BIGGA is now inviting businesses to become Friends of First Green through an annual donation, with a suggested contribution of £500. Support from Friends will help BIGGA reach more schools, provide educational materials and resources, fund school transport bursaries, support clubs and volunteers delivering First Green events and expand outreach at careers and training events.

The first business to join the scheme is Siems Turfgrass Ltd, led by Ken Siems, whose support marks an important step in the growth of the initiative.

Jenny Bledge, BIGGA Workforce Project Manager, said: “Initiatives like First Green are so important for the future of our industry. If we want to continue attracting the next generation into greenkeeping and golf course management, we need to give young people the opportunity to see the wide range of skills, technology and career pathways our industry offers. Reaching both primary and secondary school pupils helps us spark that interest early and continue building it as they grow.

“Support through Friends of First Green will play a huge role in helping us make these

opportunities accessible to as many young people as possible, regardless of background. Donations and support will help us continue developing resources, supporting hosting facilities and removing barriers that may prevent schools and young people from taking part.

“We are incredibly grateful to Ken Siems and Siems Turfgrass Ltd for becoming our first Friend of First Green and supporting the future of the profession in such a positive and meaningful way.”

Friends of First Green will be recognised equally through a listing on the Friends of First Green webpage, a digital ‘I’m a Friend of First Green’ badge and inclusion in BIGGA’s annual acknowledgement list.

Independent trial highlights fairway drought performance

Independent research carried out at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center in Norway has highlighted ICL’s H2Pro TriSmart and Syngenta’s Qualibra among seven commercially available soil surfactant technologies evaluated under prolonged drought conditions.

The work forms part of the STERF-funded FAIR WATER II project, supported by The R&A Golf Course 2030 initiative and the German Greenkeepers Association (GVD), investigating practical drought management and water-use strategies for golf course fairways across Northern Europe.

During the severe 2024 drought period, untreated plots required 116 mm of irrigation water to maintain the intervention threshold, compared with 90 mm for plots treated with H2Pro TriSmart. This represented a statistically significant 22% reduction in irrigation water use versus untreated turf.

Alongside lower water use, H2Pro TriSmart maintained strong turf quality, green grass cover, and soil moisture performance throughout the drought period, with the trial paper describing it as delivering the “best all-round performance” under the conditions tested.

Within the same controlled rainout shelter trials at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center Landvik in Norway, Syngenta’s Qualibra was recognised for providing the “best overall visual appearance after prolonged drought”.

As golf courses continue to face increasing pressure around water availability, irrigation costs, and prolonged dry periods, the FAIR WATER II project is also assessing approaches including thatch management, deep aeration, and the use of brackish or recycled irrigation water. ICL

Club weathers coastal challenges with J

Sustain Fairway

Perched on the Welsh coastline, Abersoch Golf Club has always lived at the mercy of the elements.

Managing those ever-changing conditions for the last 37 years is

Head Greenkeeper Arthur Evans who, in recent years, has found a combination of the right grass seed mixture and expert advice has transformed the condition and resilience of the 18-hole coursethat combination being Johnsons J Sustain Fairway from DLF.

For years, the club had struggled with ryegrass and fescue mixtures that germinated well but failed to retain coverage when drought conditions arrived. In an attempt to encourage the naturally occurring sheeps and hard fescue and bolster this with other hardwearing, resilient and top-ranking fescue cultivars, Arthur and the team opted to sow J Sustain Fairway from the Johnsons Sports Seed range.

“It was evident very quickly that the J Sustain Fairway mixture was able to thrive in our sandy soil environment and within a

few months from the first sowing, the club and the players noticed significant improvements in both coverage and sward density.” Arthur continues, “Last year was our third year on this programme and, arguably, the most challenging with very prolonged, dry conditions. Thanks to the now established fescue populations, the fairways emerged relatively unscathed which also instils confidence that the course is in a much better position to survive these extremes in weather moving forwards.”

Designed to thrive under low-input management, J Sustain Fairway’s fine-turf fescue formulation delivers excellent playability, density and visual merit with reduced fertiliser, lower irrigation and less intensive maintenance. Introduced to the range in 2023, it performs particularly well on heathland and links courses and those exposed sites prone to environmental extremes.

Club builds bespoke approach with Consolidate Turf

At Surbiton Golf Club, consistency is rarely straightforward.

The golf course is built predominantly on heavy soils, carries year-round play and faces the same increasingly unpredictable conditions challenging golf courses across the UK.

What began as a conversation around improving presentation and spring recovery would eventually help shape one of Consolidate Turf Health Solutions’ more distinctive approaches: site-specific nutritional programmes tailored to the needs of individual facilities.

For Course Manager Andrew Kerr, the focus was improving

turf performance without creating unnecessary growth or additional maintenance pressures.

“We were seeing turf quality deteriorate after wet winters,” explained Andrew. “We’re heavily played all year round, so you lose sward density and plant health quite quickly.

“We were looking for products that would aid recovery and improve presentation, but without creating excessive top growth. We didn’t want to create more mowing, more clipping removal and ultimately more waste.”

Mansfield Sand at the heart of Teeton’s arena

For International show jumping trainer Dan Delsart, the quality of the surface beneath his horses isn’t just a detail - it’s a foundation.

Based in North Northamptonshire, Dan has created a bespoke arena at Teeton Valley Stables using carefully selected materials from Mansfield Sand, helping him deliver a surface that prioritises both performance and horse welfare.

“I wanted a good sand which drains, and a sand which can hold a bit of moisture, so it doesn’t dry too quickly and go dusty,” he says. “And with adding up some quality fibres we were able to recreate a bit of a root like grass.”

That approach led him to work with Mansfield Sand,

combining their materials with fibres from Combi-Ride to create a hybrid surface designed for performance and durability.

The result is a surface that balances freedom of movement with support, helping reduce the risk of injury while maintaining consistent rideability.

Since the arena was completed in August 2022, Dan has been impressed by how well it performs under daily use.

“We have a lot of horses here; about 15 to 20 a day,” he says. “Some days we might not pass the leveller for two or three days because the arena still looks really good.”

an industry event around five years ago, early discussions quickly evolved beyond standard nutritional programmes.

Rather than managing multiple products and separate deliveries, Andrew wanted a more streamlined approach for his team.

“Having one product in a container rather than multiple products arriving separately makes life much easier,” Andrew explained. “From a staff point of view, it’s efficient, it’s straightforward and it still delivers the results we need.”

According to Rob, those conversations became the

starting point for Consolidate’s bespoke mixing philosophy.

“Andrew was one of the first people to really push us on bespoke mixes,” said Rob. “Instead of five or six separate products going into a spray tank, we started looking at how we could combine products chemically and scientifically into formulations that delivered exactly what the golf course needed.”

The simplified approach also reduced logistical issues, eased pressure on staff and created more consistency during timesensitive application windows.

Hidden soil failure can cost the most

What if your drainage problem isn’t actually a drainage problem?

Every year, golf courses, sports pitches, landscaped developments and domestic gardens spend thousands trying to solve standing water, weak turf, poor plant establishment and shallow rooting.

The usual response is more drainage, more aeration or more cultivation. But what if the real problem lies deeper?

Across the UK, we regularly find sites where water is trapped

above a hidden compacted pan layer beneath the surface. Years of machinery traffic, footfall, construction activity and repeated surface cultivation can create a dense barrier that water, air and roots simply cannot penetrate.

The symptoms are easy to spot: puddling after rainfall, black layer, saturated surfaces and struggling plants. The cause is much harder to see.

While traditional aeration techniques are highly effective within the upper root zone, many only influence the top

200–300mm of soil. Over time, deeper restrictions can remain untouched, creating a hidden layer that continues to hold water and restrict root growth. We call this Hidden Soil Failure.

At Apex Soil Solutions, our specialist Geo-Injection technology targets these deeper compacted layers, restoring the natural movement of water, oxygen and roots throughout the soil profile.

Non-staining paving jointing, even in wet weather with GftK technology

The advanced state-of-the-art, GftK vdw 850 plus Paving Jointing Mortar from NCC Streetscape, is designed for you to start and finish on schedule, despite wet weather forecasts, and even in in the rain.

There is no concern or worry about ensuring that any residual water is removed from the joints, as the GftK mortars are very quickly and easily applied across the paving, using the optimum advantages of wet-slurry techniques, to very effectively self-compact into the joints and displace any water.

In fact, as they are highly cohesive with excellent flow properties, the wetter the better for working with GftK, and there is no additional tooling or finishing required either. This advanced, 2ndgeneration, epoxy technology is developed and exclusive to GftK, and is what also binds the resin to the largely spherical alluvial sands that are used for the ideal granulometry, preventing resin loss and contamination of the

stone, whilst generating the highest flow characteristics and selfcompacting capability.

It is this cohesion that allows more water to be used for optimum wet-slurry application, to the extent that would cause separation and performance reduction in other products.

With GftK Paving Jointing Mortar, you have no worries about staining, or unsightly resin bloom, such as from 1st-Generation epoxy paving joint mortars, and you can complete the jointing or repointing when you are ready, not when the weather is!

Get the job completed on time and with minimal cleaning requirements. You can even keep working in the rain when you need to get finished - no delays for your paving jointing and repointing works and for contractors - no delays in getting paid, and for the owners – no delays in opening or reopening and into service.

No more waiting for dry conditions

GftK’s vdw 850 plus, and the finer grade (GftK vdw 815 plus) for narrow joints from just 3mm wide, are ideal for jointing many different types of paving – everywhere from domestic patios, paths and driveways, to paving around retail and commercial centres, and for heavily trafficked paved roads and public areas such market squares for example.

These unique ‘state-of-the-art’ paving jointing products are completely prebatched for ease and control of mixing and use on site; there is no additional finishing required, plus the final cleaning is also easy, just rinse and clean off with more water.

There is no cement haze as you get from all cement-based materials, and no staining.

GftK vdw 850 plus mortar hardens quickly to get areas

into service as fast as possible, hardening to withstand the toughest installation and service demands of. Another advantage of using GftK vdw 850 plus is that there are no short or long-term shrinkage problems, meaning no cracks and making this the perfect solution for variable width joints, with less limitations on joint dimensions, gives long-term shrinkage free performance, plus it is tough and resilient, able to withstand high-pressure jetwashing and even mechanical streetcleaning machines.

Whether the weather looks set against you, or you just want to minimise the risk of joint issues and comebacks, with fewer limitations and more advantages, get the security of GftK vdw 850 plus on your next project – no delays, and saving you time and money when it matters.

New fund to boost women and girls’ football

Sport England has awarded £3 million of National Lottery funding to support women and girls’ football in the country through The Lionesses HERe to Play Fund.

The new funding will help the formation of more clubs or organisations that give women and girls a safe, welcoming and accessible space to play.

The FA’s women and girls’ football strategy - Inspiring Positive Change – shows this audience’s interest in the sport has doubled in the last four

years, as the number of women and girls playing football has increased by 56%.

Executive director of partnerships and place, Lisa Dodd-Mayne, is excited about how our investment can help further grow this interest.

“The Lionesses’ legacy continues to roar with women and girls’ football growing at pace,” she said.

“Our latest Active Lives Adults survey results show that football is the most popular team sport

for women, with nearly 300,000 thousand playing every month.

“We’re delighted to help create even more opportunities for women and girls to play the beautiful game in their local places and spaces.”

The fund was launched last year to capitalise on the interest in the women’s game sparked by the Lionesses’ second successive UEFA Women’s Euros victory.

Creative Play launches inclusive playground range

Creative Play has launched Play For All, a new inclusive playground range developed through a two-year collaboration with Prospect House Primary Specialist Support School in Manchester.

Shaped by real-world observation and consultation, the range is designed to provide accessible, meaningful play experiences for children of all abilities.

The project began when Creative Play was invited to work with Prospect House to reimagine an underused outdoor area.

The school wanted a playground that supported emotional regulation, independent wheelchair access, and purposeful play for pupils with significant learning difficulties, while encouraging shared play experiences.

The Ruskins range of Play Trees, Play Logs and natural boulders within developments consistently outperform more engineered features when it comes to engagement.

What is particularly striking is how people interact with them. Children don’t need instructions or signage. They climb, balance, jump and explore instinctively.

But it is not just children. Adults do exactly the same, often without realising it. There is a moment, usually brief, but unmistakable, where something changes. A kind of playfulness takes over. We often describe it as the “inner monkey” emerging, usually accompanied by a slightly mischievous, Cheshire Cat grin.

Modern landscapes often prioritise control. Surfaces are even, edges are defined and activities are structured. While there is a place for this, it does not always encourage exploration or imagination.

Natural features, by contrast, are unpredictable. A tree trunk may twist, a log may vary in height, a boulder may present multiple

routes to climb. These small variations create opportunities for movement, balance and problemsolving in a way that feels intuitive rather than imposed.

There is a sensory richness to natural materials that cannot easily be replicated. The texture of bark, the solidity of stone, the irregularity of a surface underfoot - these are experiences that connect people to their surroundings in a more direct way.

For developers and designers, the inclusion of natural play elements represents a different way of thinking about landscape design. It is not about replacing all man-made features, but about rebalancing the environment.

Too often, landscapes are designed to be looked at rather than used. Grass is laid, planting

is installed and spaces are defined, but opportunities for interaction are limited.

By introducing elements such as Play Trees, Play Logs and boulders, landscapes become more dynamic. They encourage movement, exploration and social interaction. They create informal gathering points and moments of discovery.

From a delivery perspective, incorporating natural play elements is often simpler than it might appear. It does not require complex infrastructure or significant additional cost. What it does require is an understanding of how these elements can be selected, positioned and integrated effectively.

Manufacturer launches playground-in-one innovation

Playdale Playgrounds has unveiled its latest innovation— Fuse, a dynamic new play system designed to bring multiple play experiences together in one connected structure.

Available in both 1.5 m and 1.9m height options, each with three variations, the range is designed to maximise play value within a compact footprint—creating what can truly be described as a “playground-in-one.”

Fuse has been carefully engineered to support children’s physical, cognitive and social development. With interconnected routes that encourage climbing, balancing, crawling and exploration, the system promotes decision-making, confidence-building and creative play through continuous movement.

A key consideration within the Fuse range was creating opportunities for inclusive play. Selected units incorporate accessible entry points, integrated seating areas, and

thoughtfully designed spaces that encourage children of all abilities to play, connect, and engage together.

Designed to meet the needs of schools, local authorities, housing developments and community spaces, Fuse offers a flexible solution for sites where space, budget or accessibility are key considerations—without compromising on play experience.

Its heritage is equally distinctive, with Samuel Lockhart’s performing elephants, Wilhelmina, Trilby and Haddie, once local icons who walked through the town and bathed in the river.

When Warwick District Council identified that the existing play area had reached the end of its usable life, the brief called for a high-quality, visually striking replacement that would reflect the park’s setting, celebrate local identity and create a memorable family destination.

Proludic transformed the initial elephant theme into an ambitious bespoke design. At its centre stands a 4-metre-high Robinia elephant, providing a sculptural

focal point as well as opportunities for imaginative and physical play. An elephant springer and bespoke elephant slide further bring the local story to life.

Inclusivity was central to the scheme. Developed with input from Evergreen School, the design includes a wheelchair-inclusive seesaw, a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, twin trampolines, tactile panels, and sensory features inspired by the River Leam and surrounding gardens.

The completed play area successfully combines the natural aesthetic of Robinia timber with other durable materials suited to a high-use public park, creating a distinctive, inclusive and locally meaningful destination for families in Royal Leamington Spa.

Wintergarden play area unveiled at Bluewater

Jupiter Play & Leisure, in partnership with Landsec, has unveiled the transformation of Bluewater Shopping Centre’s Wintergarden Play Area in Dartford.

The site has been reimagined as an immersive, mushroom-inspired destination designed to spark curiosity, movement, and joyful play for families.

Officially sprouted in April 2026, the revitalised Wintergarden brings together inclusive design with imaginative play and subtle touches of a garden in bloom. The space creates opportunities for children to explore, connect, and let their imaginations run wild.

The vision for the new Wintergarden Play Area began with a design competition among year 6 pupils at Temple Hill Primary School in Dartford. The pupil’s influence can be seen throughout the final design, with playful shapes, natural textures, and gentle references to the blooming garden inviting storytelling across the site.

Drawing on over 30 diverse pieces of play equipment, the redesigned Wintergarden offers a complete landscape of movement, imagination, and inclusion with moments for intergenerational play woven throughout.

At the heart of the Wintergarden lies the bespoke Mushroom Multiplay Unit: two sculptural towers linked by a crawl tunnel. The larger tower reaches an impressive 8.8 metres in height, with plenty of room inside to climb and crawl your way to the top.

The shorter 5 metre tall wheelchair-accessible tower provides space to climb, slide, and crawl. Nestled under the mushroom domes of each unit are mirrored ceilings that encourage social play, accompanied by subtle lighting that illuminates the unit and extends play time into the darker hours.

Powering groundcare towards the future in uncertain times

Innovation continues in the tractor market despite economic challenges. Jane Carley rounds up latest developments and distribut or changes.

Groundcare tractors come in many guises – from 20 hp compacts where the lightest tread is needed to agricultural spec models capable of handling large implements for open spaces.

Fuel costs remain a cause for concern, while a drive for sustainability has increased interest in electric models, which are gradually coming to market.

Massey Ferguson has added seven new models to its compact tractor range, including a completely new three-model MF 2M series, while two larger MF 1M models increase this range to four machines. Two further additions include new MF 1E.40 and MF 2E.55 models, replacing the MF 1750 E and MF 1755 E respectively, suited to users requiring a costeffective compact option.

The MF 1M range includes hydrostatic and mechanical transmission options and a choice of open platform of air-conditioned cab, depending on model, with engines ranging from 20-40 hp.

A choice of three MF 2M series models includes the MF 2M.50 (49hp), replacing the previous MF 1750 M, the MF 2M.55 (54hp) which succeeds the MF 1755 M, and the MF 2M.65 (65hp) is the replacement for the MF 1765 M. All come with fourcylinder engines and selectable 4wd as standard.

Both the MF 2M.50 and MF 2M.55 models feature a quiet, airconditioned cab as standard, while those buying the range-topping MF 2M.65 can choose between cab or open platform ROPS versions. The MF 2M.50 comes with a hydrostatic transmission, the MF 2M.55 with a 12 x 12 power shuttle mechanical gearbox, while the MF 2M.65 can be specified with either system. Specifications includes 1,580 kg rear linkage capacity and up to 48.1 litres/min of hydraulic oil flow.

Fendt has added the new e100 Vario electric tractor to its offering in the UK & Ireland.

Using the same battery unit as the narrow e107 V, the Fendt e100 S Vario has been designed for the utility, amenity and leisure sectors.

At 2.16 m wide and 2.64 m high with standard tyres the Fendt e100 S Vario is available in two specifications - Profi and Profi+.

The drive train of the Fendt e100 S Vario features a battery with an electric motor and Fendt’s 40 kph Vario transmission which works in three driving modes. The maximum power range according to ECE R85 is 68 hp in Eco mode. In Dynamic mode, up to 75 hp is available and, at peak drive power, the machine provides up to 90 hp for short periods in Dynamic+ mode with a maximum torque of 347 Nm.

“With a battery capacity of 100 kWh, the tractor achieves an operating time of around 4-7 hours when used in the partial load range, such as for seeding work. Energy-intensive operations, like using a trailer in transport, will reduce the operating time,” says Fendt’s Ed Dennett.

The Fendt e100 S Vario can be optionally equipped with the Fendt Cargo 3X65 front loader. The design of the Fendt Comfort cab is optimised for use with a front loader, with a roof window that offers a 100 deg viewing angle.

For businesses generating renewable energies, the e100 S Vario is virtually CO2 neutral, which means CO2 emissions and the tractor’s running costs are significantly reduced. Further cost savings are realised by not having exhaust gas after-treatment, engine filters and engine oil to run the machine.

The electrically powered tractor is quieter than machines with a conventional diesel engine for

extended operating time in noisesensitive residential or urban areas.

In line with the automotive standard, Fendt e100 models are equipped with a CCS2 socket compatible with standard wall outlets or public charging points; the Type 2 plug also enables charging via alternating current (AC) up to 22 kW.

There is a range of other charging options; using a fast charger the battery can be charged from 20 to 80 per cent in around 45 minutes.

Electric Fendts are equipped with 340/70R24 tyres for the front axle and 480/70R30 tyres for the rear axle, as standard.

Fendt and Trelleborg have jointly developed the TM1 Eco Power tyre especially for this series and 65% of the components come from renewable or recycled sources. The tyres feature a particularly low rolling resistance in order to be energy-saving and thus extend the battery life.

Bobcat compact tractors are now available from Barrus Ltd. The 2000 platform features six models that can be equipped with ROPS or cab and Stage V engines ranging from 25 to 40 hp.

There are Economy PTO 540E and manual and HST Transmission options available. Other operational features include autoPTO, PTO Cruise (35hp models and up), and HST Cruise or Draft control (CT40).

The Bobcat compact tractor line-up is designed for compatibility with the company’s range of attachments, using powerful hydraulics and the BobTach interface.

Daily maintenance is simple thanks to the one-piece engine cover and Bobcat offers standard warranty for 24 months or 2000 operating hours.

2 & 4 Wheel Tractors

The Iseki TM4 range consists of the TM4230 (21 hp) and TM4270 (25 hp) models, designed to be lightweight, highly manoeuvrable and perfectly suited to working in tight spaces while still delivering the lift capacity and hydraulic performance needed to power a wide range of implements.

For the first time, the TM4 range is now available with a factory fitted cabin with air conditioning as standard. Hydrostatic transmission models are available in both ROPS and cabin specification, whilst the manual transmission option is available in ROPS configuration only.

Yanmar compact tractors are now distributed in the UK and Republic of Ireland by BOSS Off-Road Vehicles, with focus on the compact range of tractors from 22 hp to 60 hp.

The company’s agriculture and groundscare product line includes compact tractors, transporters and implements.

With its i-HMT (integrated Hydro Mechanical transmission) technology, the YT3 Series delivers infinite speed control and high torque output while maintaining cleaner emissions. Models are from 35-60 hp with three- and four-cylinder engines and can be specified with cab or ROPS. The top of the range YT359-R-Q has up to 1400 kg lift capacity to the rear and 850 kg on the front with 540/750 rpm pto.

The SA compact tractor series comprises 22 and 26 hp models with two-pedal hydrostatic transmission and a choice of cab or ROPS.

Today’s compact and utility tractors are expected to tackle an increasingly varied workload, suggests New Holland product specialist Jack Richards.

“Versatility has become a bigger consideration for contractors and grounds teams investing in new machinery,” Jack explains. “Many operators only have one compact or utility tractor carrying out multiple jobs across the working week. That

machine might be mowing in the morning, loading materials in the afternoon and then operating winter maintenance equipment later in the year. Reliability and flexibility are really important.”

New Holland’s compact and utility tractor line-up reflects this broad range of applications. At the smaller end of the scale, the Boomer range has become a popular choice with landscapers, sports clubs and local authorities looking for compact machines capable of handling demanding day-to-day workloads.

“The latest Boomer modelsincluding the 47 hp Boomer 45, 52 hp Boomer 50 and 57 hp Boomer 55 - are designed to offer greater lifting capability and improved operator comfort while remaining compact enough for confined working areas,” says Jack. “Features such as hydrostatic transmission options, cruise control and electro-hydraulic PTO operation are particularly useful where operators spend long periods carrying out specialist but repetitive work.”

The Boomer range has also been designed to work with a wide variety of implements, from mowers and rotary tillers to compact loaders and winter maintenance equipment.

Sitting above the Boomer range, New Holland tractors such as the T5 Utility offer increased power and hydraulic performance while still retaining the visibility and manoeuvrability required for grounds maintenance and municipal work.

Available from 80 hp to 117 hp, the T5 Utility range has been designed as an all-round machine capable of handling loader work, mowing, transport and PTO-

driven applications. Four-wheel drive options, high lift capacities and a choice of transmission specifications allow operators to tailor the tractor to the demands of their business.

“New Holland has also introduced updated transmission technology aimed at improving ease of operation during long working days,” states Jack. “The T5 Electro Command models with eightspeed IntelliShift technology automate gear shifting within working ranges, helping deliver smoother operation and reducing operator fatigue.”

Alongside comfort and performance, sustainability is also beginning to shape future machinery development within the landscaping and amenity sectors. New Holland’s T4 Electric Power tractor signals the direction of travel for loweremission compact machinery, particularly for businesses operating in environmentally sensitive or urban locations.

The versatility of the Ventrac continues to attract new customers year on year, says UK supplier Price Turfcare. Essentially consisting of one traction unit, the 25 hp diesel 4520Y can be fitted with over 30 attachments and accessories. Its ultra-low centre of gravity and light footprint enables 30-degree slope capability and use in wet of boggy areas where more traditional machines are unable to go.

The Ventrac Quick Mount System allows accessories to be mounted and dismounted by one operator in a matter of minutes. Ventrac designs and manufactures its own accessories and attachments ensuring optimum performance and

usability with a one stop shop for service parts and support, however, the three-point-hitch increases versatility by accepting third party attachments which are commonly used.

The tractor unit uses a simple but very efficient drive train making a sub-25 hp engine viable, which does not require complex and costly exhaust aftertreatment apparatus as it is below threshold above which such technology becomes mandatory for diesel engines.

Although well known for its array of mowers, many users are benefitting from the hard landscaping attachments available. An example would be the KG540 Power Rake.

Steve Lloyd, Course Manager at The Worcestershire Golf Club acquired a Ventrac package in 2023.

Included in Steve’s choice of attachments was a Power Rake. Steve says “We bought the Ventrac to try and do more than one thing with the power unit. It dovetailed with plans trying to keep the golf course more accessible by putting more and more pathways around, and we’ve gone with gravel paths. With the Power Rake, if we do get a little bit of washout on paths, we can send somebody out quickly in the morning before play begins. It’s user friendly and not as difficult, slow or disruptive as a 360 digger.”

The Reform Metrac H70R from Simon Richard is a compact and versatile tractor built for demanding environments.

Powered by a reliable 75 hp Perkins Stage V engine, it’s designed for year-round use, and to handle extreme slopes with the

engine and cab mounted at the centre of gravity in the chassis, which is crucial for the tractor’s origins in mountain agriculture.

Updates on the latest H70R version include tractive power increased by 14% compared to its predecessor.

A two-range hydrostatic drive offers a top speed of 40 kph and two mechanical off-road reductions, controllable via pedal or drive lever.

The linkage technology is based on a load-dependent working hydraulic system with electrohydraulic weight compensation; cat 1 and 2 front and rear linkages each have 1500 kg lift capacity and front and rear ptos are standard.

A standout feature is the multifunction joystick, integrated into the mechanical drive lever, which allows the selection of front, rear, all-wheel, crab, and offset all-wheel steering modes. This ensures maximum manoeuvrability, especially on slopes and in tight spaces.

Wide tyres ensure maximum traction while maintaining low ground pressures.

Prioritising operator comfort, the new cab design has a full glass door for improved visibility and a wider entry. The air conditioning system has also been updated with mixed air flowing from ventilation nozzles in the dashboard.

Proven as an outstanding mowing solution for difficult terrain when paired with an implement such as the Müthing flail, leading contractors can fit a wide array of other implements, from sprayers to seeders, rotary mowers, forks and harrows.

MF compacts suit expansion

Gareth Fowler-Simons, owner at Lakeside Ground Maintenance based near Coventry was a very early adopter of Massey Ferguson’s latest MF 1M compact tractor series.

“We ordered MF 1Ms as soon as we could as the increased lift capacity allowed us to be more efficient when using mounted equipment. The models have 001 and 003 on the serial numbers, so they must be the first models off the production line,” he says.

The workload for Lakeside has increased significantly over the past two years, which has included a near doubling of the workforce, a move to a 10-acre dedicated office, workshop and machinery storage location, and an increase in the number of tractors to cope. Massey Ferguson machines dominate the now seven-strong fleet.

Gareth’s latest two purchases, a brace of MF 1M.25 models, were chosen to cope with the increase in fine turf work on golf courses, bowls and cricket squares.

“We’re noticing more of these businesses carrying out the daily

tasks themselves, but outsourcing renovation works to contractors.”

Although Gareth evaluated other brands when looking at replacements, once Chandlers salesman, Mark George, went through the spec of the new MF 1M, it was the increase in lift capacity which stood out as a huge benefit.

“The new MF 1Ms have a 900 kg capacity, which is a huge improvement to safety and output.”

Gareth says the operators like the MF 1Ms versatility, allowing the tractors to carry out a wide range of tasks and quickly switch between implements.

“I can send two tractors and several implements in one gang, and they can quickly switch between a scarifier, seeder, top dresser, brush or vertidrain, without worrying if the tractor has the capacity for it.”

Latest Kubota continues legacy

Founded in 1845, The Glasgow Academy is the oldest continuously fully independent school in Glasgow. It is renowned for its sporting prowess – with rugby and hockey played by both the students and Glasgow Accies Sports club in the winter months, then switching to primarily cricket, tennis and athletics during the summer.

“With sport played daily, we rely heavily on having the right, reliable equipment to produce pitches that can withstand the pressure of constant wear,” head groundsman Robert Cheape says. For more than three decades, powering that maintenance operation has been Kubota. “In the shed we have a Kubota B1550 from the early 1990’s which still runs and is used for lighter jobs around the sites, a B2650 and, more recently, we added an L2622 to the fleet.”

“While we can see the improvements and things like the controls and operatorfriendliness has moved on they’re still, fundamentally, well-built, comfortable, reliable workhorses. For that reason, I’ll never use anything else” he adds.

The L2622 delivered in August 2025 brings increased power and productivity, featuring a 61 hp stage-V diesel engine and the highest rear lift capacity in its class. “With time of the essence, we found we were relying on larger, more powerhungry implements and the L2622 has proven the perfect partner for implements such as our Verti-Drain – which we’re increasingly relying on with the more regular periods of prolonged and heavy rainfall.”

Matching larger workloads

Tim Gatcum runs a successful landscaping business in Hampshire with a growing list of clients requiring paddock maintenance for up to 15 acres of land at a time.

With a wide geographical spread of customers, plus a desire to recruit more, road speed is as important – if not more crucial – than horsepower.

From topping, rolling and harrowing to carting horse manure, the work is varied, so Tim has chosen a new John Deere 6M 125 with a 623M loader to do the job.

“We do a fair bit of roadwork – some of our clients are up to 30 miles away – so the 50 km/h transmission was a big reason we chose this model,” Tim explains.

“You really notice that difference when you’re sat on the A3 trying to get to a job.”

To suit the demands of his mixed workload, Tim opted for a carefullychosen set of factory-fitted features when specifying the tractor. The AutoQuad Plus gearbox was key, but the front PTO and hitch will allow for front-mounting the mower in the future. He also specified triple link suspension, front fenders, and an increased payload option – all

designed to improve road comfort, performance and efficiency.

“I tend to use it the most, but because it’s simple to operate there are no problems with one of the team jumping on it whenever required.”

The tractor sees regular use pulling a 2.5 m Teagle topper, a light roller, and occasionally a 10-tonne trailer.

After more than 20 years in business, Tim knows what works.

“The 6M 125 is quick, comfortable, and does everything I need it to without the fuss. For what we do, it’s spot on.”

Compact sweepers and collectors deliver year-round versatility

Wiedenmann UK’s Super 1300 range has been developed to provide a compact, manoeuvrable solution for sports grounds, golf courses, parks, estates and contractors working in areas where larger collection machines may be impractical.

The range comprises two models: the Super 1300 S is a dedicated sweeper, using twin rotary brushes to collect grass clippings, leaves and surface debris into a 1,600-litre hopper; and alongside it, sits the Super 1300 M, with the ‘M’ standing for Multihead.

Rather than relying solely on brushes, the Super 1300 M

features a versatile head unit capable of accepting either flail or scarifying blades. This allows operators to cut and collect, or scarify and collect, in a single pass, reducing the number of operations required and helping maximise productivity during busy maintenance periods.

Both models are designed for use with compact tractors, making them particularly suited to sites with restricted access, narrow gateways or areas where manoeuvrability is important. With a working width of 1.3m, they still offer a generous collection capacity.

The evolution of Pellenc’s battery-powered blower range

Pellenc, distributed exclusively in the UK and Ireland by Etesia UK, has long been revered for its pioneering commercial lithiumion engineering.

With the recent introduction of the highly accessible Essential Line alongside their heavyhitting Airion 3 professional standard, grounds teams now have a targeted, petrol-matching tool for every operational tier.

For intensive, day-in, day-out clearance, the Airion 3 remains the lightweight powerhouse of choice for municipal and largescale amenity teams.

Weighing a record-breaking 2.55 kg in hand, the Airion 3 tackles one of the biggest hidden operational hazards of clearing: musculoskeletal strain.

Delivering an impressive 17.5 N of effective thrust and an actual airflow of up to 920 m³/h, the tool easily handles heavy, waterlogged autumn leaves. It features four working speeds plus a trigger-activated Boost mode.

Built around a tough magnesiumalloy turbine housing, the tool boasts an IP54 sealing rating, making it completely

dustproof and 100% waterproof for relentless operation in unpredictable UK weather.

Recognising that smaller contractors, heritage sites, and educational facilities need professional performance without the top-tier price tag of massive backpack batteries, Pellenc recently rolled out the Airion Essential.

Retaining the signature patented angled intake to eliminate wrist fatigue, the Airion Essential is fully ambidextrous. Despite being part of Pellenc’s budgetconscious professional line, there are zero compromises on raw muscle: it achieves a massive 23 N of thrust in boost mode (18 N at regular high speed) and a high velocity 1,200 m³/h airflow.

Both the Airion 3 and Airion Essential have been awarded the prestigious, independent LONGTIME label. This European certification guarantees that the tools are purposefully engineered for durability and true repairability.

Baroness FS900 brings enhanced productivity to pitch clean-up

Games and training on football pitches creates significant debris and divots from player’s boots, leading to an important ‘clean-up cut’ after each session.

Despite the name, a cut is not always necessary, but it is widely considered best practice to lift and remove the debris and loose material to retain plant health, optimise light and airflow to the surface and aid recovery.

Offering a fast, efficient alternative to a pass with a traditional rotary mower, is the FS900 sweeper/ collector from Baroness.

A rotary mower has long been the go-to for the post-match clean-up, with multiple 16-18” walk-behind units typically tasked with the job at hand. While larger 34-36” rotary mowers are now available, the process remains labour and time-intensive, requiring multiple operators to complete the task effectively.

In comparison, the FS900 from Baroness can be operated by one person and can complete a clean of the full pitch in roughly half the time, all while also applying significantly less weight across the pitch surface.

Where the FS900 also differs from the alternative tools and techniques

available is that it has been specifically designed to sweep and clean the surface without causing damage to the turf. Traditional rotary mowers are usually set high to create a vacuum effect, but this can lead to issues with debris removal, particularly in wet conditions, and can sometimes result in the grass being inadvertently topped.

The light and compact design of the FS900 provides unbeatable manoeuvrability, while its ability to cover over 5000 m2 per hour makes it a highly efficient weapon in the arsenal of any football facility. It features a fully adjustable brush system and skirt to enable the accurate and efficient collection of debris of different sizes, with full control of the brush height and other parameters easily accessible from the operating area. The adjustable down pressure from the rear roller also leaves a smooth playing surface immediately after every pass.

Not only is the FS900 ideal for debris removal after pitch usage, it’s also perfectly suited to timecritical pitch renovations – quickly lifting scarification material into the large 420 litre hopper, which is then easily emptied thanks to the hydraulic high-dump system.

New whitepaper on creating safe public realm spaces

Bradstone, a member of Holcim UK, has launched a major new whitepaper, Promoting Safety in the Public Realm, calling for a more coordinated, evidencebased approach to designing and managing safer public spaces across the UK.

It is the first output from a new working group assembled by Bradstone, comprising landscape architects, academic partners, NGOs and industry professionals to examine how safety is understood, experienced and delivered in the built environment.

The whitepaper pulls in recent research from the University

of Leeds and West Yorkshire Combined Authority which reveal that fences and walls around park edges make parks feel less safe due to reducing escape routes, while busier parks feel safer due to passive surveillance from other people.

Contributors to the whitepaper include Jo Roberts (Holcim UK), Dr Anna Barker (University of Leeds), Romy Rawlings (Landscape Institute / Deep Green), Ben Gill (One Planet), and Iwonan Kossek (Ask for Angela).

Together, they argue there is a growing urgency to tackle safety in public spaces

as, despite having a direct influence on each, the issue continues to receive less attention than other urban issues, such as decarbonisation, regeneration and public health.

Tobermore Braemer block paving creates dynamic outdoor space

Arch Henderson set out to design a visually striking and functional outdoor space for BAE Systems in Glasgow, balancing modern aesthetics with cost-effective hard landscaping solutions.

To achieve this, they sought to incorporate innovative paving patterns that would not only enhance the visual appeal, but

also help to define and break up the distinct areas within the space.

By carefully selecting materials and layouts, the aim of the design was to introduce a sense of structure and flow while ensuring durability and practicality.

Arch Henderson turned to Tobermore’s Hard Landscape Proposal service to simplify the decision-making process.

By leveraging the expertise of Tobermore’s in-house landscape architects, they received tailored design advice and innovative laying patterns that helped define and enhance the distinct outdoor areas.

The result is a well-structured, cohesive space that meets both functional and design objectives.

To achieve the end result, Braemar block paving was carefully selected in colours Innis Black, Jura Grey, Alto Silver, and Arran Stone to create contrast and visual interest.

By using a variety of block sizes and innovative laying patterns, the design effectively broke up and defined the distinct areas, adding both visual interest and functional structure to the space.

The result is a well-coordinated, stylish outdoor space that seamlessly complements the surrounding architecture while ensuring long-term performance and value.

from Baroness which, after more than a decade of service, continue to deliver reliable performance and an exceptional quality of cut week-in, week-out.

“From a productivity perspective, we explored the options available in the ride-on, multi-unit market and took delivery of our first Baroness LM2700 in 2013” he explains. “Impressed with its performance we quickly added a further two LM2700’s to the fleet which remain fully operational, while the oldest has only recently been retired for parts.

“Considering they’re more than a decade old and have clocked up a huge number of

hours, they’ve been incredibly reliable mowers.”

Across all three machines, one fact that stands out to Scott is that the club have never had to replace a single cylinder reel: “The reels are extremely robust and even when you inevitably catch a hidden contaminant in the ground, it barely leaves a blemish – a quick re-grind is all that’s needed and you’re back on your way.”

The LM2700’s five-unit configuration has been central to improving productivity, maintaining the 10 grass pitches at the training ground quickly, without compromising presentation.
