Poorest areas twice as likely to have unsafe and run-down parks Research reveals shocking levels of inequality of access to safe, well maintained green spaces, despite proven benefits to wellbeing and quality of life. People living in Britain’s most deprived communities are more than twice as likely to describe their local park as ‘unsafe’ compared to those in the most affluent areas, according to new research by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, published to mark the 30th anniversary of the Green Flag Award. The findings reveal a growing ‘Green Divide’ across Britain, with those who stand to benefit the most from access to safe green spaces the least likely to have them. The research also reveals that parks in the most deprived communities are most likely to fail to meet basic human needs, in contrast with those in affluent areas. This inequality has widespread implications for

wellbeing, community safety and economic opportunity. Evidence shows that parks are one of the most cost-effective public assets available; every £1 invested delivers more than £7 in wellbeing benefits. Yet, despite physical inactivity costing the UK £7.4 billion each year, investment in parks has accounted for less than three per cent of local authority budgets in recent years.

“In an age of rising concern about community cohesion, young people’s wellbeing and time spent online, safe local parks are becoming more important than ever. Yet the communities who need them the most are sadly the least likely to have them. “With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative

solution and one of the most visible ways councils can improve people’s quality of life. “Every pound invested in a park, particularly in a deprived community, delivers real returns - improving wellbeing, bringing communities together, reducing loneliness, giving people somewhere safe and free to spend time and, ultimately,

reducing pressure on public services like the NHS. “As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces that are safe, welcoming and maintained to the highest standards.” Green Flag Award Enquiry 1

For the first time, data has been examined from the British Children’s Pre-School Play Survey specifically to understand the role playgrounds play in children’s lives.

A look around the urban environment

Keep Britain Tidy’s findings are published as this year’s Green Flag Award winners are announced, recognising a record 2,391 of the UK’s best-managed parks and green spaces.

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.

Study reveals powerful link play and mental health Young children who spend more time playing in playgrounds are happier and have better mental health, according to new analysis of one of Britain’s leading studies of children’s play.

understand the role playgrounds play in young children’s lives. That matters because playgrounds are the number one place children play away from home, yet until now we haven’t had a clear picture of how playground use relates to children’s mental health and wellbeing.”

Chair of the Association of Play Industries, Dr Amanda Gummer, said the report clearly shows the power of playgrounds.

“The findings provide fresh evidence that playgrounds are far more than recreational spaces -

they are essential public health infrastructure, a crucial part of children’s everyday lives and make an important contribution to their mental health,” she explained.

The findings - from leading play expert Professor Helen Dodd and commissioned by the Association of Play Industries - reveal that playgrounds are not only the number one place for young children to play away from home, but that more frequent playground play is associated with better wellbeing and fewer emotional difficulties.

AUGUST 2026

Welcome... The last month has proved something of a mixed bag for our parks and green spaces. On the one hand, a record number of sites were awarded the coveted Green Flag status for 2026. But on the other, Keep Britain Tidy marked 30 years of the awards by releasing new research showing the glaring green divide when it comes to access to parks and green spaces. The research makes for sobering reading, especially when you consider the professionalism and resources that goes into securing Green Flag status. The ability to produce true community assets, parks and sites that set high benchmarks for people to enjoy, has never been in question as local authorities, contractors and volunteers continue to work tirelessly to create fantastic facilities. But, as always, the doubts surrounding investment and Government funding remain and continue to hinder progress. Maybe a change of Prime Minister to one who has previously championed play and the development of urban parks and community green spaces will signal a new hope for adequate funding and resources for councils and contractors. We will wait and see. This month we have a full preview of GroundsFest 2026. In a very short space of time the event has established itself as a major force in the UK, bringing together groundscare, landscaping, amenity and the play sector for a two-day mix of indoor and outdoor displays and demonstrations that has captured the imagination of the wider industry. The presence of major names making their debut at the 2026 event shows the continued growth and importance of GroundsFest.

Amenity Forum chairman issues statement on glyphosate use in the UK As a fresh consultation on glyphosate is about to be launched and the continuing debate about the future of vegetation management, the Amenity Forum has called for Integrated Pest Management to remain at the heart of future decision-making.

However, it maintains that as the debate can sometimes become polarised - framed as a simple choice between chemical and non-chemical approaches – it is increasingly important that the wider public and decision-makers are aware that the reality is far more complex.

Public interest in how parks, highways, rail corridors, housing estates, sports facilities and public open spaces are managed continues to grow.

“The amenity sector is incredibly diverse,” explained Ian Graham, Chairman of the Amenity Forum. “The challenges faced by a local authority managing thousands of miles of pavement are very different from those faced by a golf course, sports club, rail operator, utility company or housing provider. What they have in common is a responsibility to maintain spaces that are safe, accessible, functional and sustainable. This is where Integrated Pest Management plays a vital role.

The Amenity Forum says such spaces play an important role in communities and there is growing expectation that they should be managed in ways that protect biodiversity, minimise environmental impact and contribute to wider sustainability goals.

More than 400 join Campey to celebrate 40th anniversary Campey Turf Care Systems welcomed more than 400 turf professionals, customers and industry partners to its Bosley branch in Cheshire on Thursday 9 July 2026 for an event celebrating the company’s 40th anniversary. The milestone event brought together people from across the turf industry to recognise four decades of innovation, education and partnership. The theme throughout the day was on the Past, Present and Future, highlighted with a replica of the infamous Delorian ‘Back to the Future’ car representing a peek at the past, present and future of turf care with examples of historical equipment alongside current machinery and a glimpse into Campey’s next chapter with the development of the Bosley site a particularly fitting setting for the celebration. The scale and versatility of the site provided an ideal setting for live machinery demonstrations. Visitors were able to see Campey’s extensive portfolio in action, including the Air2G2, Dakota spreaders and equipment from key manufacturing partners Imants and Vredo. This practical focus has defined Campey since its establishment in 1986.

“IPM is often misunderstood as simply reducing pesticide use. In practice, it is about making evidence-based, site-specific and proportionate decisions. It encourages managers to consider a range of approaches, including prevention, design, maintenance practices, monitoring, mechanical control and biological solutions, before deciding whether intervention is required and, if so, what form that intervention should take. Importantly, IPM is not about replacing one tool with another. It is about understanding the strengths and limitations of all available options and selecting the most appropriate combination for a particular situation. “Across the amenity sector, many organisations are

already making significant progress. Herbicide use is being reduced through targeted application, improved mapping technologies, revised maintenance regimes and greater tolerance of low-risk vegetation where appropriate.” The amenity sector also faces the challenge of balancing environmental ambition with operational and financial realities, he continued. Local authorities, contractors and land managers are under increasing pressure to deliver high standards of maintenance while managing constrained budgets and growing public expectations. “Experience across the sector has shown that there is no single solution suitable for every location,” he added.

“While some organisations have successfully reduced glyphosate use, others have reported increased costs, greater resource requirements and less effective vegetation control, highlighting the importance of retaining flexibility to use the most appropriate combination of tools for individual sites.

they must be considered alongside public safety, accessibility, affordability and long-term sustainability.”

“Environmental considerations are critically important, but

Over the past 40 years, the company has worked alongside manufacturers, grounds professionals and greenkeepers to identify and introduce machinery that has helped advance the construction, renovation and maintenance of natural sports surfaces. From its roots in Cheshire, Campey has grown into a global business supplying innovative turf care machinery and supporting customers in more than 100 countries. Reflecting on the anniversary, Campey Chairman Richard Campey said: “I have been incredibly fortunate to have worked with so many talented people, loyal customers and trusted partners who have all played a part in this journey. Together, we have seen tremendous change in our industry, and it has been a privilege to contribute to that progress. “As we celebrate this milestone, my thanks go to everyone who has supported Campey along the way. The future of turfcare is bright, and I am excited to see the next generation continue to innovate, educate and push boundaries.” Campey Turf Care Enquiry 6

AUGUST 2026

Organisations call for urgent green infrastructure to tackle extreme heat Leading national tree and horticultural organisations – the Woodland Trust, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) - are making a renewed call to Ministers, and all levels of government, to act now to cool UK cities through green infrastructure, warning that repeated extreme heat is already reshaping daily life and risks becoming the new summer norm.

The warning comes after the UK saw record-breaking heat twice this year, with London recording an all-time May high of 35.1°C and the UK then experiencing provisional record-breaking June heat on three consecutive days during last week’s heatwave.

The organisations say the solution is already in front of us: more trees, more green infrastructure, and a stronger domestic tree-production sector able to supply the planting the country urgently needs. A study conducted in Manchester found that, in full sun, concrete surface temperatures reached 40°C, whereas grass in full sun only reached 23°C. Adding an element of tree shade reduced the temperatures further, with concrete 12°C cooler and grass 9°C cooler. The annual value of the urban cooling services provided by the UK’s vegetation was estimated at £430 million in 2020, equivalent to around £547 million per annum in 2025 prices.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the Horticultural Trades Association, said: “Green infrastructure is not a niceto-have; it is essential climate infrastructure. The evidence is clear that plants, gardens and trees can make a measurable difference to how hot our streets, homes and communities feel. In dense urban areas, where hard surfaces trap and retain heat, trees and green spaces provide shade, cool the air and reduce the heat absorbed by buildings, roads and pavements. “That matters because hotter summers are already changing how people experience towns and cities. If we want places

that are safer, healthier and more liveable in extreme heat, we need to plan, grow and plant the trees and green spaces that will protect communities in the decades ahead. The UK tree sector is ready to be part of that solution, but government must give businesses the confidence to invest in the

this protection, but millions of people live in tree deserts.

Andy Egan, Head of Conservation Policy at the Woodland Trust said: “While some communities sweltered, others were shaded by trees which cooled surface temperatures by more than 10°C. Everyone needs

“The Government’s new tree action plan for England should prioritise planting high-quality homegrown trees in these areas, protecting communities and restoring nature.”

The Turfgrass Growers Association (TGA), the representative body for professional turfgrass growers in the UK, is calling on all water companies to apply a clear and consistent exemption allowing newly laid turf to be watered for at least 28 days during Temporary Use Bans.

A large swathe of central, eastern, and southern England is now experiencing a flash drought - which develops very quickly brought about by a combination of very low rainfall and higher temperatures. The seven areas in drought are: East Anglia; Hertfordshire and the whole of London; Thames Valley; Hampshire & the Isle of Wight; Devon & Cornwall; The West Midlands; and Wessex (covering Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, and south Gloucestershire). Helen Wakeham, Director of Water at the Environment Agency and Chair of the National Drought Group, said: “The hot and dry weather means we are currently using water faster than nature can replenish it. “A second consecutive summer drought is an exceptionally serious situation and one that will have longlasting impacts on our environment, wildlife, and the economy.

TGA calls for exemption for newly laid turf during water restrictions

Woodland Trust

The TGA said it fully recognises the pressures facing water supplies and supports sensible measures to reduce unnecessary water use. However, while most current restrictions include an exemption or concession allowing newly laid turf to be watered during its initial establishment period, the wording

and conditions vary considerably between water companies.

Some companies allow newly laid turf to be watered for 28 days after installation, while others only permit the watering of turf that was laid before restrictions began. Some also impose conditions relating to watering times, methods or evidence of when the turf was laid. The TGA believes this inconsistent messaging risks causing unnecessary confusion among consumers. That uncertainty can then affect the wider supply chain, leading to cancelled or postponed turf orders and landscaping projects. Freshly laid turf must be watered while it establishes roots into the soil beneath it. Without sufficient water during this critical period, the turf may fail, wasting the turf itself, the resources used to produce and transport it, any water already applied and the customer’s investment. The TGA has worked with water companies, water-industry bodies and the wider landscaping sector for many years to establish a clear distinction between newly laid turf and established lawns. The TGA is therefore calling on all water companies to apply and clearly communicate a consistent minimum 28-day establishment exemption for newly laid turf. TGA Enquiry 10

The new chainsaw, which offers 2kW of mechanical power at an operating weight of under 6KG, pairs high cutting power with a compact build, making it easier for professionals to manoeuvre when delimbing, felling small trees and processing timber.

A wide range of attachments, such as washing brushes, spray booms, long-range nozzles, flushing booms and flushing nozzles, sewer flushing units, surface cleaners, sweepers, as well as various pump, reel and hand-held lance systems, are available.

Why design confidence starts with earlier collaboration The success of a landscape project is often determined long before construction begins. Decisions made during the earliest design stages shape buildability, programme certainty, long-term performance, project costs and embodied carbon. As projects become more complex, specifiers are increasingly expected to balance ambitious design aspirations with tighter budgets, evolving regulations and higher sustainability expectations. Achieving all these objectives isn’t just about selecting the right products. It demands technical collaboration right from the start of a project. That collaboration also means drawing on the knowledge and skills that manufacturers can bring to a project. Engineering expertise, digital modelling and specification support help identify buildability challenges before construction

begins, helping project teams develop more robust, specificationready solutions before designs become fixed. Working together from the earliest stages allows value engineering to become part of the design process before key decisions become fixed. By exploring alternative construction approaches, refining construction details and optimising material use during the design stage, project teams can respond to technical constraints while protecting the original design intent and reducing the need for costly redesign later in the project. At Marshalls Landscaping, this philosophy has led to the launch of MaDE (Marshalls Design

To minimise downtime for busy professionals, the saw’s interchangeable sprocket allows for quick switching between chains

(with 3/8‘P and .325’ pitch), making it easy to swap out components on the job, with minimal disruption. To support cost efficiency, for simple delimbing tasks, the MSA 260 C-O integrated oil pump’s flow rate can be adjusted to suit the user’s requirements, reducing oil consumption. This offers professionals control of the saw’s operation for managing running costs. Tried-and-tested STIHL features, such as side chain tensioning and a captive nut, also make changing the saw’s chain easy for users, and the saw’s externally mounted

Ultimately, successful projects depend on collaboration rather than product selection alone. The earlier technical expertise is brought into the design process, the greater the opportunity to reduce risk, protect design intent and deliver landscapes that perform as intended for years to come.

Non-staining paving jointing and no shrinkage cracking GftK’s vdw 850+ Paving Jointing Mortar has a unique formulation that prevents the separation and resin loss that occurs with inferior resin jointing products and leads to the contamination and staining of natural stone and porcelain paved surfaces - even if the manufacturers and suppliers call it a temporary sheen. It still looks terrible and takes a lot of effort to clean, or a long time to ‘weather-off’, especially on lighter and more permeable and sensitive natural stone. The development of this 2ndgeneration, water-dispersed epoxy technology, is exclusive to GftK in Germany, and this is used to precoat the spherical alluvial glacial sands, which are the fine ‘no-fines’ sand / aggregate component in their advanced products. This is what provides the optimum correlation

of strengths (tensile, compressive and e-modulus), for the highest performance in application and service. This also provides the high flow characteristics and selfcompacting capabilities, plus the high internal cohesion with the resin in the mix, which is what allows more water to be used without risk of separation and segregation, for the most efficient wet-slurry application. This is why it is ‘the wetter the better’ at the wet-slurry stage, to the extent that this could cause separation and loss of performance with the other epoxy paving jointing products on the market.

No more waiting for a dry forecast Designed to help you start and finish paving jointing on schedule, despite wet weather forecasts, and even in in the rain, using GftK vdw 850+ paving jointing mortar allows the optimum use of wetslurry application techniques, with extended flowability to spread easily across the paved surfaces and into the joints. Here they displace any residual water with highly efficient self-

compaction, and as a result, unlike with other products, there is no additional tooling or finishing required. With the advantages of GftK vdw 850 plus, and the finer grade GftK vdw 815 plus for narrow joints >3mm wide, you can plan to start, apply and complete your jointing and repointing works when you are ready and on schedule, not just when the fickle British weather cooperates!

Therefore, by selecting GftK vdw 850 plus you have no worries about staining, and none of the annoying cement haze that you get from all cement-based jointing materials.

Get the job completed on time and with minimal final surface cleaning requirements, just rinse and brush off with a little more water in a fine hose spray. You can even keep working in the rain when you need to get finished - No delays for your jointing and repointing works, plus no loss, but rather an increase in joint quality and durability. GftK vdw 850 plus hardens quickly in the joints, to get areas open and/or back into service as fast as possible, and then to withstand the toughest exposure and service demands. It can be used for all types of paving, everywhere from domestic patios, paths and driveways, to paving around retail and commercial centres, and for heavily trafficked paved roads and other public areas such market squares. A further advantage of using GftK

vdw 850 plus, is that the material hardens by internal cross-linking and there is no short- or longterm shrinkage and consequential cracking problems, as there always will be with cementhydration and air-drying jointing products, which are the root cause of many joint failures. This also makes it the perfect solution for joints with variable widths, for example in the repointing of traditional Yorkstone and historic slate slabs or granite setts, as well as in Crazy Paving, which seems to be coming back in fashion. This ensures longterm shrinkage free performance, plus being tough and resilient, it can withstand high-pressure jetwashing and even mechanical streetcleaning machines. NCC Streetscape

retain moisture around plants when they reach a good size.

Wildflower bulbs are perfect for creating safe havens for pollenating bees, butterflies, moths, and other endangered insects, whether regenerating areas in towns and villages, in woodland settings or small areas set aside for a preservation site. Native varieties such as Anemone nemerosa (Wood Anemone), Allium urinum (Wild Garlic), Galanthus nivalis (Single snowdrop) and Hyacinthoides non scripta (English Bluebell) and Narcissus psuedonarcissus thrive in these environments.

Green-tech supports DTMS with sustainable landscape solutions The Goole Public Realm Project is a phased regeneration scheme designed to enhance key locations across Goole Town Centre, including the railway station, market hall, library and main pedestrianised high street. As part of the wider town centre transformation, DTMS Group’s scope of works included the installation of Hydroleca drainage media within pre-built planters, supply of topsoil, planting of 2,000 perennial and herbaceous shrubs and application of a surface bark mulch. To support successful plant establishment and long-term

landscape performance, Greentech supplied a range of specialist landscape materials designed to improve drainage, provide a highquality growing medium and enhance moisture retention. These products formed an integral part of the planter build-up and helped create optimal growing conditions throughout the scheme.

The planting programme was supported by a range of sustainable landscaping materials to create ideal growing conditions within the scheme’s modular planters and to support long-term planting success. Hydroleca lightweight clay pebbles were supplied as the drainage

layer within the planters. Their lightweight, porous structure provides excellent drainage, aeration and water retention to support healthy root development and help to create a balanced growing environment. Green-tree topsoil was supplied as the primary growing medium, with approximately 18 tonnes used across the project. Manufactured from recycled organic materials, it provides a fertile, consistent and sustainable rooting environment, supporting healthy plant establishment while helping to reduce the use of peat-based products.

AUGUST 2026

Scotbark ornamental bark was applied as a surface mulch across the planting areas. The bark helps retain moisture, suppresses weed growth and regulates soil temperatures while providing an attractive finish that enhances the overall appearance of the scheme. Nick Rogers from DTMS Group explains: “Green-tech provided excellent support throughout the project, from the initial enquiry stage through to product supply and delivery. The quality of the products supplied was consistently high and they performed as required on site.”

and will continue to flower for up to 30 years. When considering planting flower bulbs in grass land or lawns you should plan carefully around any grass cutting programmes you have in place, select varieties that flower in the late winter and early spring periods, this will allow time for the foliage to die back after flowering before cutting starts, this is essential to develop the bulbs for future seasons to come. Crocus, snowdrops, and Wild daffodils are perfect for these situations.

Naturalising flower bulbs are the simple way to create drifts of intense colour for grassland areas, town and village approaches, roundabouts, verges, golf course and woodland walkways, the sight of daffodils swaying in the breeze is a sight to behold with many councils, landscapers and trusts opting to plant flower bulbs to attract visitors, generate land into areas of interest and for the wellbeing of residents.

For areas of general interest for impact planting in spring beds, perennial borders, around shrubs, parks, open spaces and private gardens the options are wide and varied most flower bulbs will perform in these areas, alliums, hyacinths, narcissus, and tulips are ideal for creating vibrant displays, and companion planting in beds or under planting in containers will extend the period of interest from late winter into early summer.

The benefit of planting daffodils is that they can naturalise freely

It has been developed into a highquality public space that encourages longer stays and provides inclusive, engaging, and challenging play for children of all ages and abilities. The open brief gave Proludic the freedom to develop a truly bespoke design, shaped by the site’s character and its mature copper beech tree. A colourful nature-inspired theme runs throughout the scheme, helping children connect with the surrounding landscape through physical, sensory, imaginative and social play.

Central to the park is an 8-metrehigh, 17.6-metre-long Kanopé multiplay tower acting as a “beacon of play”. The structure offers elevated climbing, a crawl tunnel and four slides, including a corkscrew slide. Around it, the playground is organised into distinct but connected zones: Toddler, Junior, Teen, Ninja, Swing and Sensory. Younger children benefit from areas designed to develop balance, coordination, confidence and fine motor skills. A generous swing zone includes traditional, cradle and inclusive seats, while accessible features such as a wheelchairaccessible roundabout and see-saw support shared play. A locally themed storybook and poems also connect the wider play experience with Amesbury’s heritage.

A 54-metre ACTI’Ninja trail provides a demanding challenge for junior-aged children and teenagers, with the latter benefiting from informal social equipment, including a pod swing, Double Perch and Rollrunner, which provide space to meet, relax and remain active. The completed park now sits alongside Bonnymead Recreation Ground’s skate park, multi-use games area and riverside walks. Officially opened in July 2026, it provides Amesbury with a distinctive, inclusive destination designed to support active lifestyles, community pride and memorable play for generations. Proludic Enquiry 27

Play trees can add commercial value to developments For many developers, Public Open Space (POS) is often viewed as a planning obligation rather than a commercial opportunity. Every square metre allocated to grassland, landscaping, or play areas can feel like land lost to additional housing plots, reducing immediate development yield. Which is why in a market where land value, density and viability are under constant scrutiny, it is understandable why open space is sometimes seen as a compromise. Joana Lideike, of Ruskins, said: “Historically, play areas in housing developments were often treated as functional necessities, a fenced-off section of grass, a few standard play features and basic landscaping to satisfy local authority expectations. That approach is changing.

“Play trees and natural play structures can create more engaging, multifunctional spaces that blend recreation, ecology and placemaking into one landscape solution.”

For developers, they can offer a more flexible and visually integrated alternative to conventional playground infrastructure and this matters more and more.

As outdoor amenity is becoming more important to homebuyers, particularly families, accessible green space, informal recreation and visible play areas can

improve how potential buyers experience a development.

A scheme that integrates natural play and attractive landscaping often feels more liveable and

established than one dominated entirely by built form. That emotional connection can influence sales velocity and buyer confidence. Ruskins

Play Trees are natural play features created from sustainable sourced durable hardwoods from the UK. These encourage climbing, balancing, exploration, imaginative play and interaction with landscape design. Play Trees can also be created from suitable trees felled on site, facilitating the retention of the carbon stored on site. These can create natural play settings of play trees and play logs featuring climbing structures, play log play elements, tree-based balance trails, nature-led adventure spaces designed around informal play.

Council launches consultation on new £400,000 playground Barnet Council has begun consultation on its plans for a new £400,000 playground for Heybourne Park in Colindale. Proposed new equipment includes a triangular climbing net with hang out zones for young people and a huge ‘multi-play’ active zone featuring slides, bridges, monkey bars and more. Planned facilities also include swings, roundabouts, picnic areas, a big noughts and crosses board and more – designed for children of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. The consultation will run until Thursday 6 August. Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “We are delighted to be building Heybourne Park’s first playground in what is currently an empty space. “Right now, residents have to walk a good 15 minutes to take

their children to playgrounds in Montrose Playing Fields or Silkstream Park. This project will give them a state-of-theart playground right on their doorstep – and the children will love it! “Please get involved and let us know what you think of our plans before we start work on them.” The new playground forms part of Barnet Council’s wider masterplan to transform and revitalise Heybourne Park using S106 funding from the redevelopment of the nearby Grahame Park Estate. Early proposals include a new BMX and skate park, table tennis area and amphitheatre that could provide a sunny seating area for small events like ‘Movies in the Park’. Work on the new playground is expected to begin in spring 2027. Barnet Council Enquiry 29

The TGA will be showcasing the importance of professionally grown natural turf and highlighting the role turfgrass continues to play within landscaping, sport, amenity, and urban green infrastructure. The association represents growers producing turf for a wide range of applications, including domestic lawns, sports surfaces, landscaping projects and environmental schemes.

Same staff. Double the lawns. Rocket your profits. Introducing Kress Voyager, the unmanned mower designed to travel with professional landscaping crews. While Voyager handles the mowing, operators are free to focus on edging, pruning, clearance and other skilled tasks, helping businesses complete more work without increasing staffing levels. A key focus for the TGA is the promotion of quality standards within the industry.

The association developed the TGA Quality Standards for Cultivated Turf, helping to provide growers, landscapers, and end users with confidence in the quality, consistency and professionalism of TGA member-grown turf. These standards cover areas such as turf composition, strength, soil thickness, cutting height and overall turf health. The association is also heavily involved in wider industry discussions around sustainability and environmental responsibility. Alongside sustainability, the TGA continues to advocate for the benefits of natural turf in the built environment. TGA Enquiry 35

and one quick-release form to deliver a steady supply of nutrients without the flush of growth sometimes associated with conventional fertilisers.

This year, the focus will be on two products designed to deliver long-lasting performance across amenity and landscape turf: Suståne 18-1-8+Fe and Bolster Liquid Plant Biostimulant.

This even, controlled growth makes Suståne 18-1-8+Fe ideal for golf courses, sports turf, parks, lawns and amenity landscapes – creating turf with excellent colour and reliable performance.

18-1-8+Fe combines controlled release fertiliser technology with Suståne’s natural organic compost base to provide up to 16 weeks of consistent nutrition and support long-term soil health. The formulation features three slow-release nitrogen sources

Complementing the granular fertiliser is Bolster Liquid Plant Biostimulant – a product specifically formulated to help turf and ornamental plants cope with environmental stress.

The tool that fixes what aeration cannot reach If a surface keeps puddling no matter how much you drain and aerate it, the real problem usually sits deeper than conventional aeration can reach - a hidden compacted pan, built up over years of machinery traffic, footfall and construction, holding back water, air and roots. The VOGT Geo Injector drives a probe deep into the profile and fractures that layer from within using compressed air — no digging, no surface damage, no disruption to roots above.

ISEKI cut and collect beats the elements Blundell’s School in Devon has 50 acres of sports pitches and an additional 70 acres of landscaped parkland and campus grounds to maintain year-round and for the past five years, they’ve placed their trust in ISEKI UK and Ireland. Their fleet now includes two TG6507 50hp tractors, a TXG sub-compact tractor, a TH5370 35hp tractor, and two SXG ride-on cut-and-collect mowers.

Two SXG ride-on mowers are used extensively for cut-andcollect work in formal areas and around buildings. “The SXGs are brilliant during wet conditions,” adds Josh. “There are times we still need to mow even when it’s damp, and the SXGs

don’t leave a mess or clippings behind. That’s important when you're working around boarding houses and main entrances because the site still needs to look sharp regardless of the weather.

doing it, year after year. In our line of work, that’s the difference between being confident in your plan or constantly reacting to breakdowns. ISEKI gives us that confidence.”

“It’s not just that the machines perform well, it’s that they keep

ISEKI Enquiry 90

“We’ve had our Iseki fleet for five years now, and they’ve been reliable, trustworthy, and always ready when we need them,” says Head Groundsman Josh Allen.

Keeping commercial contracts moving with Kubota

Based in Tiverton, Blundell’s is a day and boarding school with around 650 pupils and a site rich in sporting heritage and formal presentation. The demands placed on machinery are high, with frequent mowing, seasonal renovations, heavy towing, and tight working spaces.

For SP Landscapes, reliability is everything and equipment from Kubota has played a pivotal role in that success.

Contracts Manager Bobby Luckings explains the importance of the partnership and how, today, Kubota is powering around 80% of their grass cutting operation. “Kubota has been a constant presence for us and every machine we’ve ever used from them is simple to use, reliable and up to task” says Bobby. “We currently have two Kubota ST35’s which power implements for landscaping and groundworks, a BX2200 and multiple mowers from the G and F Series, all supplied by our local dealers Thurlow Nunn Standen (TNS).” Two of their most recent purchases include the Kubota F391 out-front mower and a G231HD from the popular, professional G-Series. With a

22hp diesel engine, 48” mower deck and high dump collector, the G231HD offers impressive performance, combined with excellent operator comfort and cut capability whether grass is tall or dense, wet or dry. “This has brought fantastic productivity to the cutting of commercial areas, with the high dump feature meaning we can easily empty clippings into the van for recycling at Thetford power station,” he added. “The F391’s meanwhile are fantastic at manoeuvring around obstacles, so are our go-to for quickly and efficiently cutting some of our larger residential lawns and council green spaces.” Bobby adds, “With the exception of some of the highways and verge maintenance and the really big spaces, everything we cut is done with a Kubota.” Kubota Enquiry 91

First AS 920 ESherpa 2WD mowers now in use

John Deere is 2026 Solheim Cup official partner

The AS 920 ESherpa 2WD electric ride-on mower for tall grass is going into series production.

John Deere has been confirmed as the official golf course and turf maintenance machinery partner of the 2026 Solheim Cup taking place at Bernardus Golf, the Netherlands, 7 – 13 September 2026, bringing their considerable experience in world-class course preparation and adding to the events sustainability credentials.

The first machines are currently rolling off the production line and are already being delivered to customers. AS-Motor is thus the first manufacturer to bring a production-ready, batterypowered ride-on mower for tall grass with a swappable battery system to the market.

The AS 920 ESherpa 2WD operates with a powerful 56-volt swappable battery system and a total capacity of 16 kWh. The electric drive and blade system delivers a mowing performance that even exceeds that of a combustion engine. 13 kW peak power at the mower deck ensures enormous cutting force and an excellent cut. The AS 920 ESherpa 2WD also impresses with its powerful and efficient two-stage wheel drive, delivering a torque of 600 Nm.

A key advantage of Ariens’ powerful FusionCore battery system is the ability to use it across multiple machines. The interchangeable batteries of the AS 920 ESherpa 2WD are compatible with the professional zero-turn mowers Zenith E and Arrow E from sister brand Ariens. This allows for optimal seasonal use and utilisation, thereby significantly reducing the investment costs. AriensCo

The agreement places John Deere at the heart of one of the biggest events in women’s sport. It formalises a partnership that brings together the global machinery manufacturer, Dutch dealer Kraakman, and the team at host venue Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands.

Bernardus Golf’s local John Deere dealer, Kraakman, will supply all the equipment as well as delivering on-the-ground technical expertise before and throughout the event.

John Deere’s market-leading technology and electric and hybrid innovations mean it is a perfect fit for the Solheim Cup’s sustainability values and ambitions. Equipment such as mowers will all utilise full or hybrid electric drives, and satellites will guide sprayers to accuracy in application of just 2.5cm.

The 2026 Solheim Cup will be the 20th edition of the biennial competition between the best women pros from the USA and Europe and has the ambition to set a new benchmark for ecofriendly sporting events. As well as adding in John Deere’s expertise, sustainability plans include replacing general on-site parking with low-emission travel options, integrated ticketing, and last-mile solutions like the bike route experienced today.

The whole fleet and its operators will be supported by John Deere Operations Center PRO Golf – a cloud-based course management system enabling the assignment of tasks, machinery management, and whole-course budgeting. John Deere

Craigielaw’s commitment to championship standards continues Craigielaw Golf Club has underlined its long-term commitment to delivering championship-quality playing conditions with a significant new investment in Toro turfcare equipment and the support services of distributor Reesink Turfcare’s ReeAssure Gold package. For Course Manager Paul Hay, the move reflects the club’s ambition to continually raise standards as demands on the course increase

through growing visitor play and a busy tournament calendar. “After extensive demonstrations and discussions with suppliers, Toro and Reesink emerged as the standout choice,” Paul says. “This investment shows the club’s commitment to improving course standards and our confidence in adopting a new supplier. “In the demonstrations that formed part of the process I was

reminded of the benefits of the clever design and technology the brand offers. Things like the manoeuvrability provided by the three-wheel design of the Reelmaster 3575-D and the flexible cutting units of the Reelmaster 3100-D with Sidewinder really impressed us.” The introduction of the SideWinder is one that delivers a significantly improved course aesthetic, says Paul: “The

biggest difference is on the bunker cutting – now we can get in even closer to the bunkers and keep the tops tighter, which significantly enhances the course’s overall presentation.” The new fleet also includes a selection of mid and heavy duty utility vehicles as well as the Greensmaster 3420 for the greens. Tele-VFR capability Get attached to the versatility of Bobcat for 77-Series Power Arm range Bobcat has expanded the company’s Brushcat Rotary Cutter Range with new deck sizes for the SALs.

McConnel has introduced Tele-VFR as a new option for its latest 77-Series Power Arm range, bringing advanced telescopic-variable forward reach capability to the midrange sector for the first time. Previously reserved for McConnel’s flagship heavy-duty machines, Tele-VFR combines the visibility and operator comfort benefits of Variable Forward Reach with the added flexibility of telescopic arm movement. Its introduction to the 77-Series gives contractors, local authorities and farmers access to a highly versatile armset on a more compact machine platform. The new 77-Series Tele-VFR armset has been completely redesigned to suit the machine, delivering the strength, movement and precision required for professional verge and hedge maintenance while maintaining the compact profile expected from the range. A key development is the use of a phased ram system to maintain the correct flailhead

position as the arm is moved forward and back. This replaces the mechanical parallelogram system used on larger machines, helping to reduce weight while increasing the available range of movement. The flailhead angling ram has also been repositioned to improve the overall arm profile and support greater manoeuvrability in challenging working environments. Tele-VFR technology allows the operator to bring the cutting head further forward for improved visibility, helping them keep the flailhead within a more natural field of view while maintaining awareness of the road and terrain ahead. This can support higher working speeds, greater precision and improved comfort over long operating days. The 77-Series has been designed for professional users who need strength, performance and reliability in a compact package. McConnel Enquiry 99

The new Brushcat attachments offer cutting widths of 1118 and 1372 mm, respectively, and are the smallest models in the full line-up of Brushcat rotary cutters, which offers larger models with cutting widths of 1676, 1829 or 2032 mm.

Like the larger models, the two new smaller Brushcat attachments deliver powerful cutting and mulching action in areas of untamed growth and can pass through gates and other narrow entrances to work in areas that are inaccessible to larger machines. They are designed to handle tough brush clearing jobs in a wide variety of applications, such as agriculture, forestry, landscaping, municipalities, parks and recreation areas.

For use with Bobcat compact loaders and selected telehandlers, Flail Cutter attachments are ideal for cutting through overgrowth on construction sites as well as alongside roads and sidewalks.

When it comes to tackling dense vegetation and challenging terrain, landscape contractors need a machine that's both powerful and agile.

The AH75 is built for tough conditions, whether you're clearing long grass, bracken, or brambles from woodland paths, orchards, or road verges. It's powered by a reliable Honda GXV 390 engine and features a durable 75 cm cutting deck.

One of its standout features is the hydrostatic transmission with a differential lock, allowing it to handle slopes of up to 20° with ease and stability. Operators can also adjust the cutting height from the handle, and with three forward speeds plus reverse, the machine offers exceptional control and efficiency.

This will allow users to choose between two established battery systems in future and integrate AS-Motor machines even more easily into their existing fleets of equipment. Choosing a battery system is a long-term investment. Today’s professional users expect not only high-performance machines, but also the ability to use batteries across as many applications as possible. With the Stihl Powerhead, AS-Motor is expanding its battery portfolio and giving users of the widely used Stihl battery system access to selected specialist machines for professional landscape maintenance. same battery system or has the same requirements. This allows customers to choose the solution that best suits

wooded areas where a large ride-on simply can't fit. Furthermore, the AH75 is considerably lighter and more compact than most ride-on alternatives, making it easier to transport between job sites. This can save you time and money on transport logistics.

For landscapers and local authorities, the AH75 offers an ideal balance of power, precision, and practicality, proving that sometimes, a smaller footprint can lead to bigger results. Etesia UK Enquiry 101

The reversible flail blades are designed to protect the transmission, reducing maintenance costs and ensuring long-term reliability. While ride-on brushcutters have their place, the Etesia Attila AH75 provides significant benefits that make it a smarter choice for many applications. Its pedestrian design allows it to navigate tight spaces, narrow tracks, and densely

ranging from 64 to 151 l/min, the flail cutter can be operated on many different carriers. A floating linkage is standard on the flail cutter.

The compact powerhouse for landscape professionals The Etesia Attila AH75 brushcutter delivers just that, offering a pedestrian solution that provides the performance of a much larger ride-on machine with superior manoeuvrability. This update highlights why the AH75 remains a top choice for clearing overgrown areas.

From the coming 2027 season, selected AS-Motor machines will be available with the Stihl Powerhead.

The new solution also opens up additional opportunities for specialist retailers. Many specialist retailers stock both the AS-Motor and Stihl brands. These retailers have relevant experience with the battery system. The new AS-Motor models can therefore be easily integrated into existing product ranges. At the same time, end customers benefit from a solution that fits seamlessly into their existing equipment fleets. The new Powerhead variant specifically complements ASMotor’s existing battery range by offering a further choice. Not every user works with the

Terrain Aeration celebrates 50 years

Consistency on the course begins with quality of the cut, which remains the benchmark by which every mower is judged.

Terrain Aeration’s Terralift system celebrates 50 years of successful deep aeration treatment of bowling greens, sports turf, golf clubs, parks, trees and more.

Nowhere is that quality more visible than on the greens. With both the Eclipse® 360 ELiTE and GP400, Jacobsen builds on its long-standing reputation for delivering an unmatched clean, true finish from the first green to the 18th. A perfect fit for early starts and noise-sensitive environments, this machine provides leading reliability with reduced maintenance demands.

Enquiry 116

At the end of September, when bowling clubs are thinking about carrying out end of season maintenance, aeration is a concept that is thought about but rarely addressed. The Terrain Aeration Scamper Terralift machine was designed 20 years ago to be able to access most bowling greens. The Scamper Terralift machine hammers a hollow probe (1 1/2” ( 37mm width) one metre into the soil before releasing a controlled blast of compressed air, to a maximum of 20Bar/280 psi. This pressure is monitored or changed by the operator, so there is a slight movement of the top surface before the turf settles back down.

Over a period, the seaweed expands and contracts with the moisture content of the soil, swelling and contracting - similar to breathing underground, helping to keep the fissures open longer. The machine uses 2m centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern, each shot interconnecting with the previous ones, ensuring the whole area is aerated and decompacted. The probe holes are backfilled with an aggregate, with the top 1”-2” backfilled with normal top dressing material. Once this deep aeration treatment has taken place, it would not be required for at least another 10-12 years, so it is extremely cost-effective. Deep aeration treatment of a green takes around 5 to 6 hours.

can gently blow through those top holes. Terrain Aeration works nationwide, providing deep aeration relief for waterlogging and flooding for bowling greens, sports grounds, amenity areas, golf courses, public spaces and house builders. Terrain Aeration Enquiry 117
