Bauder

Introducing Biosolar from Bauder

Flat roof manufacturer Bauder introduced green roofs to the UK market over 30 years ago and it has now developed its own innovative PV mounting system for biodiverse and extensive green roofs. Bauder BioSOLAR uses the substrate and vegetation to provide the ballasted installation mechanism, removing the need to penetrate the waterproofing to secure the mounting units to the roof and simultaneously makes the most of the available area for vegetation, enabling the entire roof to qualify as a biodiverse green roof. The BioSOLAR solution also delivers advantages to the building, as the cooling effect of the vegetation and water held within the green roof system preserves the ambient temperature around the PV array.

Achieving High Performance Building Envelopes

System specification is crucial to success when developing an energy efficient, sustainable building. Delivering onsite energy performance as specified in the design brief is a ‘team game’ with professionals working together to achieve the required U-value, airtightness and Psi value rating.

The devil, as always, is in the detail, or should that be detailing! In the past what was specified by the designer would not always perform as predicted - resulting in the performance gap, an issue highlighted in the Zero Carbon Hub’s report published last year.

As the leading innovator in the development and application of structural timber technologyKingspan Timber Solutions is a pioneer in sustainable structural timber construction. Ensuring that process and performance are consistently enhanced, Kingspan Timber Solutions is leading the way in addressing the performance gap

issue with an acclaimed range of high performance systems.

An example of this is the Kingspan TEK® Building Cladding Panel System, a structurally insulated panel designed for the infilling of apertures, or sheathing of the structural frame. This BBA and NSAI certified system at 142mm or 172mm thick can deliver Passivhaus airtightness values and can achieve external wall U-values of 0.20 W/m2K with ease, and down to 0.11 W/m2K or better if required.

Fast, Cost Effective and Predicable

As a lightweight solution, the Kingspan TEK® Building Cladding Panel System supports fast track construction methods, reducing build time onsite. A three man team can typically install 150m2 per day and the requirement for scaffolding is reduced, as in most situations the systems can be erected using mast climbers. As a result the Kingspan TEK® Building Cladding Panel System can be up to 50% faster than alternative construction methods.

Manufacturing in factory controlled conditions enhances quality, decreases defects and reduces waste and time onsite – making the critical project plan more predictable and permitting follow-on trades to start work sooner in the build process.

Kingspan Timber Solutions is project and performance centric. Through their extensive product portfolio, the company’s focus is firmly on value engineering and performance. With a collaborative culture, Kingspan Timber Solutions are dependable construction partners who, by using a combination of the highest performing, most sustainable materials and components, design, manufacturer, assemble and project manage the construction of cutting-edge timber solutions.

Their systems also include timber frame, structural insulated panel systems (SIPs), glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross laminated timber (CLT).

With a robust, integrated supply-chain, Kingspan Timber Solutions are dedicated to delivering outcome certainty by working in partnership with clients and their design teams to develop the best solution. With an exemplary track record built throughout our 50 plus years in the business, they are the UK’s leading experts in quality timber-based structural hybrid systems.

Is secondary ventilation pipe work still necessary in high rise buildings?

As increasing amounts of people work and live in city centres than ever before, the lack of space available for residential developments means that high rise builds are becoming more widespread.

When installing drainage and ventilation pipework in high rise buildings, traditional design standards dictate that a secondary ventilation stack has to be used to overcome air pressure changes. This is to account for the positive and negative air fluctuations that can compromise water trap seals due to the unsteady flow of water through the pipe work. Incorrect air balance can result in blowback and siphoning of the water seal in the trap, which could pose a public health risk.

To maintain stability in a drainage system, it is necessary to alleviate this change in air pressure immediately. This response time is paramount for protecting water trap seals, with traditional secondary pipework system thought to be the only way to provide this function. There are many factors to consider when installing secondary pipework systems, which continue to be the industry norm. For Instance, installing a secondary stack ventilation system requires more installation time and materials, and in turn takes up valuable floor space, a major factor when limited space is taken into consideration.

Rather than a secondary ventilation piping system, air regulatory and attenuator valves can be installed in high rise buildings drainage stacks to balance negative and positive air pressure fluctuations.

Products such as the Polypipe Terrain P.A.P.A and Pleura valves are a proven alternative to replacing traditional secondary vented drainage systems. The P.A.P.A (positive air pressure attenuation) valve is designed to react to and attenuate positive pressure transience within the drainage stack of high rise developments providing a perfect venting solution for any multi-storey building.

The Pleura valves are designed to allow air into the system when negative pressures are experienced. When these two valves are combined, the effects of positive pressure such as blown sink and WC traps and negative pressure siphoning traps are mitigated, thus removing the need for a traditional secondary vented pipework system.

There are other potential savings to be made through the removal of secondary vented drainage systems. As less vents are required there is also a reduced requirement for floor penetration to install fire collars, something a secondary vent system would always require.

The removal of a secondary vent also reduces the drainage system footprint, meaning there is greater flexibility in the design of internal drainage systems. This increased flexibility means that building designs, and room layout, are no longer dictated by strict pipework systems, providing numerous benefits to architects, interior designers and building owners who have more sellable space.

Secondary venting also proves to be a much less effective solution for very tall, or

complicated, drainage systems as the time lag that occurs when communicating a change in ambient airflow in the pipework can result in an ill performing drainage system.

The PAPA and Pleura valves have been tested in buildings up to 39 stories high and have BBA and LABC approval, making them the best option for designers, architects and installers.

Delvemade is GE Momentive Customer of the Year

Delvemade, the manufacturer of Seamsil® Cut Edge Corrosion treatment, has recently hosted a visit from three senior executives, from Momentive Performance Materials Inc., part of US giant GE Silicones. Tarek Bassil, Rich Wilson and Joseph F. Bruderek, made a special trip across the pond to present Delvemade with its ‘Customer of the Year 2014’ award.

As always there had been many contenders for one of Momentive’s most prestigious international accolades. The award came as quite a surprise as Delvemade is a relatively small operation, when compared with other Momentive customers. In a short presentation ceremony at Delvemade’s production facility at Itac’s factory in Manchester, senior commercial manager Tarek Bassil explained that the recipient of the award was not determined by sales alone.

The fact that Delvemade has seen growth in excess of 20% over the last two years was important. But the key reason for choosing Delvemade was the way the business operates and its decades long successful relationship with GE. Also taken into account was the UK company’s contribution and track record of sharing its success and exchanging information, which was seen to epitomise a great two-way business partnership. The handsome glass trophy is beautifully modelled to depict effort and achievement through teamwork. It is seen as a metaphor for business success.

Eurocell Modus maxes UK’s top energy ratings

Modus is one of two leading systems from Eurocell to achieve the BRFC’s most recent and stringent Window Energy Rating (WER) of A++. This landmark award is further recognition of Modus’s market-leading energy efficiency characteristics. The company’s Eurologik system has also been similarly recognized. Modus designs with the new A++ rating include casement, reversible and tilt and turn; together with the Eurologik 70 casement.

These windows are among the very first to achieve the ‘A++’ band in England & Wales for WERs since the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) launched the new rating in May 2015. A++ is only given to those windows with an energy index value equal to or greater than +20.

“Achieving the BFRC ‘A++’ ratings band underlines the fact that Eurocell is driving forward energy efficiency innovations that give homeowners the latest and best in high performance window windows,” says Ian Kernaghan, Product Design Manager.

The first PVC-U window and door system in the UK to offer a 12-year guarantee, Modus features a unique 75mm six-chamber profile system so it can achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 using triple-glazed units.

Northcot Brick

Northcot Brick launches New Yellow Handmades

Northcot Brick, one of the UK’s foremost independent brick manufacturers, has launched a new range of classic yellow bricks as part of the planned extension of its well-established handmade range. The three new blends: Woodstock Weathered, Wellacre Antique and Marlborough Mellow add variation to the already much sought after rich warm reds and orange hues often associated with the historic brickworks. Handmade using traditional bench mould methods and burnt in a coalfired kiln, these distinctive yellow bricks offer subtle variations in tone and texture and a character designed to complement the architecture of the south and south east of England, being reminiscent of the traditional stock bricks often found in London and the South East.

Plumis Automist used to provide fire protection in Manx TT Races Control Tower

Plumis – Automist was installed by Eurotec Safety Services of Belfast as a key part of an alternative fire protection scheme to protect the control room within the control tower of the Isle of Man’s famous Tourist Trophy (TT) and Manx Grand Prix (MGP) motorbike races, where riders compete on a road circuit of nearly 38 miles. The Isle of Man Government’s Department of Tourism and Leisure (DTL) operate a suite of IT systems in support of these annual races and these are all controlled from a tower, situated at the start/finish line in Douglas.

The whole room was undergoing major refurbishment before this year’s event which takes place from 30 May until 12 June. The Island’s Building Control officers stipulated that the room would require additional fire suppression measures because the control room leads off the only escape route.

The Department of Infrastructure had worked with Eurotec Safety Services of Belfast on a number of projects in the past and were pleased when Geoff Dougan, Eurotec’s Director recommended the use of Plumis Automist, a simple, yet effective fire protection appliance that uses a high pressure pump to generate a fine water mist.

Automist automatically and reliably detects and suppresses incipient fires before they can take hold and cause devastating damage. Each nozzle is designed to provide up to 80m³ of protection or 32m2 of floor area with a ceiling height of 2.4 metres.

The system is activated utilising a heat detector as recommended in Approved Document B, effectively eliminating nuisance alarms which would be highly disruptive to the thousands of visitors attending the races.

In this case, 2 pumps and 2 sprayheads were used to provide complete protection at a fraction of the cost and with much less disruption than fitting sprinklers.

Furthermore, the use of sprinklers was unattractive to the organisers of the races because water damage would have caused a highly inconvenient interruption to the races.

Dayle Collister from the Isle of Man Department of Infrastructure who run the races was very satisfied with the solution and would recommend Automist to resolve similar situations.

Commtel

Telguard secures top place in entrance access systems

Telguard manufactures a comprehensive range of telephone and gsm based intercom systems. Due to the fact that our systems are not hard wired to dedicated handsets, installation time and cost are greatly reduced. The quality of speech is as you would expect from telephone apparatus combined with the flexibility.

Here are only 3 connections, power, phone line and control. Any updates are carried out by the installer, either remotely or on site. A visitor simply presses the required button on the panel which dials the telephone number or mobile number of the person they wish to visit. The resident presses a digit on their phone to allow access. The new HyCan CU 2 pal is our 3G video Facility which can be used with the majority of our intercoms. When a visitor presses the desired destination button, a 3G video call is made and the receiver of the call is able to view the video from the intercom on their android device. Where 2 cameras are connected the recipient of the call is able to switch between cameras during the call. A good 3G signal is required at both ends. Cordless phones and mobile phones are commonplace now, making answering a call as convenient as changing channel on a television. Remote sites do not now pose a communication nightmare; our gsm range only requires a sim card, power and an aerial. Our products are vandal resistant and available in a host of finishes. We also offer DDA solutions and bespoke products. We are extremely proud of our ability to support our customers via our help desk and we able to solve the majority of issues remotely.

Telguard formed in 1992 with the goal of manufacturing and distributing telephone based door entry systems. The company has gone from being able to provide just one type of system with limited facilities to being able to offer a complete range of systems to complement almost any project. Our ethos is that if we do not have exactly what you want available then we can bespoke almost any colour, shape and size of any panel. Engineers have the luxury of being able to speak directly to our research and development team to discuss any problems they might face at an installation, or to provide us with input to assist us in providing systems that make installation quick and easy. Thanks to this input from installation engineers and sales staff, we are constantly reviewing and updating our systems to provide the most advanced and modern systems available on the market today.

Lifts, Stairs & Balustrades

Lifts? The latest addition to a luxury home

We all love a little luxury in our homes: all the latest comforts; every electronic gadget to help us in our busy lives; so it’s no surprise that the trend for building high-specification luxury homes sees developers and owners sometimes include the convenience of a lift. It’s the ultimate statement, a lifestyle choice and a useful addition to high-end housing. A home with a lift (or two) really does stand out from the crowd, propelling a property into a highlydesirable ‘must-have’ category.

Two floors and a small footprint When the lift requires only two stops a simpler through-the-floor lift can provide a perfect solution. Installed very simply, with no shaft required, these types of lifts have a small footprint for just two standing passengers and fit discreetly into the corner of a room. This makes the location of the lift quite flexible.

Installing a through-the-floor lift requires minimal builder’s work and within just a few days our through-the-floor Stannah Salise is installed and ready to use. Discreet and occupying minimum space these products provide quick access over two floors and are ideal for retrofit sites.

The Salise meets the requirements of BS5900:2012 is a popular choice and a luxurious addition to comfortable living.

For two or more floors, with a generous footprint

For houses with two or more floors and generously-proportioned internal space a domestic platform lift may be the chosen product. With a footprint that meets regulations to ensure it can accommodate up to four people or a wheelchair user, this type of passenger lift will certainly serve the occupants of a large house well into the future. It offers a warm welcome to everyone who occupies or visits the property.

The addition of this type of lift into a private dwelling has a number of considerations and costs. In an existing dwelling there are four clear stages to a project: surveying the site to produce plans, builder’s work, lift installation and finally internal decoration. In a new dwelling these can all be part of the architect’s plans and building work so costed as part of the whole project.

At Stannah we recommend our Midilift range of platform lifts, meeting the requirements of BS 8300:2001 and giving specifiers a wealth of options to meet every technical and aesthetic requirement.

The invisible butler

The trend for the convenience of a lift in luxury homes doesn’t end there. The fashionable town house with multiple floors

and unconventional layouts may mean bringing the groceries home (or having them delivered) could involve many flights of stairs. That’s why high-end developers and city conversions are building in a small service lift to take the strain. It’s certainly not a new thing as grand Victorian homes often had a pulley lift or ‘dumbwaiter’ in a wooden shaft that assisted the below-stairs staff with service in the formal dining room.

In grand home refurbishments the addition of a small Stannah Microlift dumbwaiter or service lift adds both convenience and value to a property - and a little grandeur too. Supplied in its own small shaft and able to travel 30 metres, with up to three entrances available on each level, the Microlift really does provide an extra pair of safe hands in a busy home.

Sioo Wood Protection – a new wood modification for the UK

All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still unweathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood. For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people off from specifying timber as a cladding material.

A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application. Very importantly, this accelerated weathering takes place through a chemical reaction of the Sioo system with the top few millimetres of the wood surface and so it is a permanent change. Because the

greying takes place due to the chemical reaction, a completely even appearance is obtained, since it is not reliant upon exposure to sunlight for the reaction to take place.

The Sioo Wood Protection System uses silicate technology in a two part waterbased system. The first stage of the treatment uses a mineral silica solution that is able to penetrate the surface of the wood very efficiently. After the first treatment stage, a silane-based emulsion is applied, which cures by cross-linking to form a flexible silica network and provides a water-proof barrier preventing leaching of the mineral silicate. Over time, the mineral silicate cures by reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide to precipitate an insoluble silica network within the wood structure.

The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats. The Sioo system is used

as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood. When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is water-based and uses silicate technology. Disposal at end of life is not a problem, since the product is non-toxic.

Use Classes according to EN 335 Part 2.

IKO’s Permascreed: the versatile solution

Permascreed from IKO PLC is the mastic asphalt alternative to traditional cement screeds. That is an effective way to level or create drainage falls on roofs and surface decks.

It also provides benefits traditional screeds just can’t match. Permascreed is fast to apply using traditional methods. With a walk-on drying time of just one hour there are fewer delays for other trades waiting to get to work. There’s also an advantage when used on exposed sites – given the unpredictable weather in the UK it’s useful to know it takes just 60 minutes to cure.

The innovative screed has zero water content, so there’s no waiting for moisture to evaporate and no risk of cement stained water getting into the underlying structure, making it ideal for both refurbishment and new build. And, given the screed thickness is up to 80% less than traditional materials, it is also much lighter.

Marcus Lee, IKO’s Sales Director, emphasises the flexibility of Permascreed for multiple applications: “It can be laid on primed concrete, glass fibre tissue or torch-on glass based bituminous membranes, and because it’s flexible and quick to cure it’s easy to achieve precise falls..”

IKO has developed a new brochure detailing all the features and benefits of Permascreed.

Free more space: new ultra-thin thermal insulation

When constructing balconies or terraces in new build projects or replacing them during refurbishments and renovations, a common requirement for contractors is to deliver both low U-values and the thinnest build-up possible. This can be a real challenge, especially in these areas, as high thermal performance is required but the lack of construction depth or space can be an issue. Balconies and terraces are notoriously problematic for roofing contractors as there is often very little space for installing new insulation. In order to meet the required U-values, the insulation will sometimes be installed both on top of and on the underside of the balcony or terrace. Not only can this be time-consuming, technically challenging and pose a condensation risk, it can also add unnecessary costs and increase the overall thickness of the construction.

The FireJet 165 models can be activated by a dedicated smoke alarm or a remote third party fire detection system and are fully compatible with any modern building management system.

Crucially the FireJet 165 is available with either a 24 volt or 48 volt control panel with battery back-up in case of mains power failure and there is the further option of manual override using switches close to the unit. Such capabilities are crucially important as smoke and noxious fumes are the main cause of fatalities in a fire disorientating people and asphyxiating them in minutes. Installing adequate smoke ventilation not only saves lives by facilitating the evacuation, but also makes it easier for the emergency services to gain access, to assist and tackle the fire. This has the additional benefit of reducing damage to the building fabric or property itself, both from the flames, and smoke damage, which rapidly spreads far beyond the seat of the blaze. The size options extend from 1000mm x 1500mm up to 1500mm x 2500mm; all operated by a single, galvanized steel mechanism. They open to an angle of 165 degrees and can be specified with either clear or obscure polycarbonate glazing; while there is the further option of a solid aluminium cover. The 24 or 48Volt motor features water resistance to IP 64 standards and will open the vent fully in under a minute. Jet Cox can provide clients with additional design support in relation to wind or snow loading and other aspects of the FireJet’s technical specifications. The majority of sizes are available ex-stock and all of them can be mounted on either 300mm splayed PVC-U upstands or splayed metal upstands measuring 300, 400 or 500mm in height.

In response to growing market demand for its CWCT approved and Passivhaus certified REHAU Polytec 50 composite curtain walling system, REHAU has produced a new brochure for specifiers and architects.

The 16 page guide is packed with technical details about the system and lots of stylish case studies showing successful installations in a range of contemporary commercial applications.

REHAU Polytec 50 is REHAU’s alternative to conventional aluminium curtain walling. It offers superior strength and better thermal performance, thanks to a system which combines the structural capabilities of steel reinforcement, the design and finish of aluminium on the exterior and the warmth and low maintenance benefit of PVC-U on the interior.

Cost effective and versatile, it is a warm façade stick system design which uses the same profile for both transom and mullion allowing for efficient onsite assembly and minimal wastage.

Projects featured in the guide illustrate the slim sightlines of REHAU Polytec 50 and include new build developments, schools, care homes and hotels in a range of RAL colours.

There is also all of the required technical data and information about REHAU’s extensive support package for commercial specifiers which is branded ‘REHAU KNOWHAU’.

Alumasc External Wall Insulation Transforms Seaside Homes

Swistherm External Wall Insulation (EWI) from Alumasc Facades, has been part of the major refurbishment of Seagate Court in East Wittering.

Managed by the Seagate Court Management Company Ltd, the complex comprises four fourstorey blocks of private residential flats, boasting a stunning coastal location overlooking the seafront.

Although the scheme was originally solid cavity wall construction, the relentless climate and saltwater air had resulted in significant erosion to the exteriors, requiring the management company to embark on a complete refurbishment programme. An insulated render solution was required that could withstand the rigours of the inclement coastal weather whilst also providing an improved, contemporary appearance to the scheme.

2200 square metres of Swistherm EWI was installed to all exterior facades of the four blocks by Alumasc’s Registered Installer Primars Coatings of Middlesex. The system was insulated with a 90mm EPS and finished with Alumasc’s high performance silicone render.

The specification of the Swistherm system meant that as well as improving the structure and thermal performance of the block, its aesthetic appearance was also transformed by the silicone render finish.

Swistherm is a direct-fix insulated render system available for use with a choice of insulation materials. The system can be used for both new build and refurbishment projects and is certified by the Energy Savings Trust. All Alumasc EWI systems are BBA approved, fully warranted and offer a range of design and specification options available across many building types.

Sandtex Trade

When South Lakes Housing Association refurbished 276 properties in the depth of the Cumbrian winter Sandtex Trade 365 All Weather Masonry Paint helped keep work on schedule. The majority of the work at the Kirkbarrow Estate in Kendal started in November 2014 and finished in late Summer 2015 –with Sandtex Trade 365 being applied throughout winter, spring and summer.

The product is specially formulated for use in adverse weather conditions and features high performance Pliolite® Resin to combat difficult weather conditions, allowing work to extend later into the UK’s traditional decorating season. It can be applied at temperatures as low as -10ºC, giving specifiers the option of selecting a product that can be applied outdoors later than they might usually expect. Sandtex Trade 365 is also rain-resistant in 20 minutes, so can be used when there is a threat of showers.

The works at Kirkbarrow Estate have included wall tie replacement, patch render repairs and full render paintwork and are part of a £38 million, five year investment programme across the association’s housing stock. Crown Paints has been selected as a supplier, with a number of contractors working on the various sites.

Lisa Maguire, Customer Experience Manager at South Lakes Housing Association said: “We chose Sandtex Trade 365 because we can use it all year round and in 20 minutes it’s water resistant. Because of our climate that’s really important to us.”

As well as exceptional performance in poorer weather conditions, Sandtex Trade 365 also offers 15 years’ proven durability, with exceptional adhesion providing a long-lasting finish which has been independently certified by the British Board of Agrément.

This offers specifiers the benefits of a reduced maintenance cycle, delivering greater value for money and supporting sustainability initiatives.

Alumasc Rainwater’s new technical brochure

The original is still the best from Interflow

The original FRANK puddle flange was developed and patented over 30 years ago but is still regarded as an industry leader.

The puddle flange is a sealing system adopted in millions of buildings and structures all over the world and the FRANK range is available from Interflow

FRANK puddle flanges are suitable for all smooth-walled pipes in steel, plastic, stoneware, concrete and cast iron from d20 to > d3200. Specifically designed for the pressure-tight installation of pipes through concrete walls, foundation plates and manholes, FRANK puddle flanges are pressure-tight up to 10 bars, preventing the ingress of pressing water, diffusing media, such as radon, as well as hydrocarbons like oil and petrol.

Alumasc Rainwater, part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS), introduces its new Technical Brochure, which is available to download at www.alumascrainwater.co.uk

The new brochure provides customers with in-depth information on all aspects of its rainwater solutions, including gutters, downpipes and associated fittings. The update includes technical data on the recently introduced AX extruded aluminium gutter, our new pre-fabricated steel outlet and the Swaged aluminium downpipe range.

AWMS Marketing Manager Ben Green says: “Our new technical brochure includes detailed information on our market leading aluminium, cast iron and steel gutters and downpipes. It’s just one part of a wide range of marketing materials we’re developing to make it easy for our customers to understand our range, benefit from our technical support and select the best rainwater solutions for their projects.

“The design of the new brochure has also changed to incorporate our new branding and campaign theme that clearly communicates the performance benefits of our range and lead in colour,” continues Ben.

Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AMWS) is the first joined up brand in the industry that provides an overall solution in water management, from rain to drain. It includes Alumasc Rainwater, Skyline Fascia & Soffits, Harmer Building Drainage and Gatic Civil Drainage.

The FRANK puddle flange is an extremely flexible product available in a range of versions; it is the easy-to-install, perfect solution for any application and is the cost effective alternative to conventional sealing systems. Installing a FRANK puddle flange from Interflow takes only a few minutes. It is manually fitted over the pipe and secured with the supplied clamping bands as described in the installation instructions. A screwdriver can be used to install the clamping band on pipes of up to 315 mm diameter while for larger sizes a clamping tool is freely available on loan.

FRANK puddle flanges are not designed to serve as anchor points for pipes. For strong PE or PP wall ducts, FRANK offers special sections with single-end or double-end flanges. Standard FRANK puddle flanges are made in EPDM, which is chemically resistant to a wide range of acids and bases and offers outstanding weather and ozone resistance. For applications involving oil and petrol environments, FRANK puddle flanges made in NBR are the recommended option.

Interflow has 25 years’ experience in supplying and installing quality stainless steel solutions for service ducts, air cleaning and filtering, and in-floor drainage. The company is the UK installer and distributor of a specialist range of products for the built environment, designed to enhance, add value and increase sustainability across commercial and public sectors, thereby helping customers save energy and reduce their carbon footprint.

Interflow provides a full specification service for architects, consultants, contractors and MEP engineers, and has a successful track record in supplying high-profile projects.

The Hauraton RECYFIX® GREEN STANDARD surface reinforcement grid system was used extensively in the grassed pathways, where a high footfall was expected, and the grassed areas surrounding Banovallum School, Horncastle .The system helped to prevent erosion and improve surface drainage. Once installed, the RECYFIX® GREEN modules were discreet, yet provided a permanent surface reinforcement to the grassed areas with a loading capacity of 200 tonne/m². The pathways and area to be grassed were excavated, covered with a granular sub-base, a layer of sharp sand applied and then rolled. The RECYFIX® GREEN modules were then secured on top of the rolled surface and their apertures filled with top soil which was compacted then grass seeded. The grass was left to grow over several weeks before access was allowed.

RENSON

RENSON louvre panels for student accommodations in London

A good air quality is crucial for students to keep the focus during studying, in the end achieving better results. Therefore, all 419 student rooms of the project Paul St. East (Shoreditch, London) of full building envelope contractor FK Construction feature their own ventilation unit. The duct of the system is connected to a specially developed RENSON louvre panel solution on top of every window in the building.

For this application in 12-24 Paul Street, the project team of RENSON Fabrications Ltd. developed a special solution, which combines a glazed-in louvre panel type 414 with a 150 mm thick insulation panel to the rear with duct plenum. For accurate connection of the ventilation duct, the insulation panel was equipped with a duct opening during assembly for on-site connection. When no duct needs to be connected, the insulating back panel was installed fully closed, providing the required thermal resistance. “We were looking for a specific solution for this application and RENSON Fabrications Ltd. was able to develop and manufacture a customised solution for us,” says Sean Keenan at FK Construction. “By integrating these glazed-in louvre panels with special insulation on every window of a building, we could not only take care of ventilation and thermal resistance, but also add an additional architectural dimension to the façade of the building.”

UK-based manufacturer RENSON Fabrications Ltd., with production facility in Maidstone, develops and manufactures a wide range of products and systems, including window ventilators, louvres and continuous louvre systems. The company provides standard as well as customised solutions to the construction market. “We offer architects, specifiers, developers, fabricators and installers a wide range of innovative systems, taking into account not only the ventilation and/ or sun protection features, but also other aspects, such as thermal resistance and acoustic performance,” says Patrick Vandenbogaerde at RENSON. “For various applications in the UK, the project team of RENSON has been developing special ventilation solutions with louvre panels, combined with options, such as dampers or an insulation panel on the rear. By integrating e.g. glazed-in louvre panels with special details, architects and installers take care of the necessary supply of fresh air, adding an architectural accent to the building.”

Renewable technology at core of the Omnie collection

Despite the Government’s carbon reduction agenda and the availability of the RHI payments, heat pumps remain a relatively nascent technology in the UK market, meaning customers should seek to purchase properly integrated systems from manufacturers with a proven track record. The Omnie collection by Timóleon brings together just such an offering, which includes high performance air to water heat pumps as well as a compatible selection of underfloor heating systems and fully compatible control options. The recently published Omnie brochure - subtitled “Making a Home Whole” – includes detailed information on the LWD air source heat pumps which are produced by the hugely respected German manufacturer, Alpha-InnoTec.

Omnie ground source heat pumps serve six bathroom rural redevelopment

The redevelopment of a former lock keeper’s cottage in Somerset, being replaced by a 850 square metre spacious modern family home, is making use of two ground source heat pumps from Omnie to provide not just space heating, but also hot water for the property’s six bathrooms, kitchen and utility. Dating back to the 1840s and the construction of the Chard Canal, which connected to the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, the cottage and surrounding land were used as a dairy farm after the waterway closed in 1868. As is often the case with obtaining permission for substantial redevelopments in sensitive locations, local planners will have looked favourably on the proposal to employ a renewable heating system. SAS International is introducing System 320, an acoustic tile, lay-in suspended ceiling system without a traditional supporting grid.

Intended for use in corridor or plasterboard surround applications, the system tiles can be provided in dimensions to suit most building modules, allowing for greater flexibility. Ideal for commercial office and residential sectors, System 320 satisfies acoustic demands set out in the Building Regulations, Approved Document E. Non-woven acoustic fleece, acoustic pad and plasterboard options allow for a flexible, cost-effective approach to acoustic control.

SAS System 320 is available with ultra-micro perforations (≥1mm) offering a brighter ceiling appearance. Another option is pre-formed apertures for service integration during manufacturing, improving aesthetics and minimising installation times. System 320 can be suspended by a range of suitable SAS International trims or any suitable flanges, including linear lights and grilles.

The comparatively lightweight tile (7kg m²) is available in sizes of 250-600mm (width) x 474-3000mm (length). For the sake of ceiling aesthetics, SAS would recommend a tile no larger than 1.4m2. Larger tiles are achievable, but to remain within industry tolerance guidelines, additional support for rigidity may be necessary.

If desired, optional 9x3mm black foam gaskets are available to create a recessed edge feature.

CMS windows provide fyne views to Scottish retreat

A luxury west coast of Scotland retreat has opened a new spa and leisure complex featuring windows, doors and curtain walling manufactured and installed by CMS Window Systems.

The £10 million development by Portavadie Estates includes a 16-metre indoor pool, outdoor spa pools, two Scandinavian saunas, fully equipped gymnasium and spa, café and the largest heated outdoor infinity pool in Scotland.

The state-of the-art spa and leisure centre powered by local sustainable technology on the shores of Loch Fyne, Argyll, was designed by architects Stewart Associates, and complements the existing marina development and leisure offering.

The glazing specification by CMS ensures the new facilities enjoy stunning floor to ceiling views across Loch Fyne and beyond to the Isle of Arran, bringing nature right into the facility and flooding the building with light.

CMS manufactured and installed all the thermally enhanced curtain walling and windows for the building envelope –these were created using a combination of the advanced SCW+ system, Senior Hybrid Systems and the SPW600 system. The project also involved installing Metal Technology P50 louvres, colour coordinated in RAL 7015 with a matt finish.

The glass specification incorporated toughened glass with a low E coating, and in areas facing the water, BIOCLEAN selfcleaning glass was used to help maintain a high quality appearance in the long term. The glazing also incorporated glass spandrels in places, coloured to RAL 7021 to maintain consistent aesthetics.

Garador rolls out a new look

Britain’s top garage door manufacturer has completely redesigned its fleet of delivery vehicles.

With clean lines and a fresh mid-blue and white styling, Garador’s lorries now reflect its modern image; which complements Garador’s leadership in not only garage doors, but also in service and delivery.

The vehicles are fitted with automatic lifting and carefully designed secure sections to ensure garage doors arrive at their destination in perfect condition. They also provide a telephone notification service, where a member of the Garador transport team calls the customer 7 days before any products are due to be delivered, and again 24 hours before hand, to help them plan for when the door arrives.

By doing this, Garador hopes to save its customers time and money, enabling them to plan more effectively for the fitting of their new door.

“We are delighted with the new look of our delivery fleet,” said Garador’s managing director Simon Hipgrave. “Garador has recently invested in new door designs and technology, and we felt it was time to invest in our delivery fleet. The upgraded lorries, with their new colouring and clear, clean signage, are now an excellent reflection of Garador and what we stand for.”

The minimalistic frame is reinforced by an invisible drainage system, avoiding the use of drainage caps on the exterior of windows and doors. SL 38 is available in three unique design variants – Classic, Cubic and Ferro – and its slim lines allow for an abundance of light.

SL 38 features a highly insulated three-chamber system with ultra-slim profiles for increased thermal characteristics. The solution is available in fixed, turn, and turn-tilt variations with Uw values of 1.4 W/m²K or greater depending on the configuration. The system is suitable for both double and triple glazing with a glass thickness of up to 55mm without losing the ultra-slim look.

For optimum end user comfort, the SL 38 product also offers excellent weather performance with air tightness of Class 4 (600Pa) and water tightness Class 9A (600Pa).

A special modification to the design also means the system is available with hidden hinges.

Marketing Manager at Reynaers Rebecca Cope said: “The SL 38 is a really versatile product. It is perfectly suited for the retention of existing structures, for example an older conservatory, allowing our customers to preserve a vintage look, or for renovation projects where steel frames have to be replaced. However, its high performance properties combined with a sleek new look make it a good choice for new builds too.”

Crittal Windows

Supermarket selects Crittall windows

Successful supermarket chain, Lidl, faced an unusual challenge with its plans to develop a store on the Lower Bristol Road, one of the main routes into the city of Bath. Occupying the chosen site was an empty and vandalised single storey industrial building circa 1966. Lidl invariably plumps for new-build stores but, having split the acquisition of the site with a property developer, the new owners’ demolition plans were thwarted by an unexpected Grade II listing. The reason for English Heritage’s attention was the mode of construction of the otherwise unremarkable structure. The 57,000 sq ft. building was the first example in the UK of the use of the Mero Space Frame. Birmingham-based Lapworth Partnership, which has designed a number of Lidl’s new stores, was engaged to meet the challenge and worked with Bath and North East Somerset Council’s conservation officer and English Heritage in the South West region to arrive at an acceptable refurbishment and upgrade of the building.

Stunning round bath in DuPont™ Corian® from CD UK

CD UK and solid surface specialist fabricator Solidity have used DuPont™ Corian® in an outstanding bespoke bathroom design for a private client in London.

This stunning scheme by Kirsten Wain at West One Bathrooms has a round bath as its centrepiece, with walls seamlessly clad in feature colour panels. Unable to find what the customer wanted off the shelf, Kirsten contacted Solidity, to manufacture and install a bespoke solution. Installation was challenging as the bathroom was accessed via a spiral staircase, requiring the bath to be delivered in sections and constructed in situ.

Impact lighting and sculptural shapes for the hand basin add to the scheme’s distinctiveness and both designer and customer were delighted with the finished project.

Kirsten Wain said: “Corian® has amazing versatility, making it exciting to work with for a designer. We were impressed with the technical capability of Solidity who were behind the creation of these beautiful shapes, which worked so well in the small space available.”

Mira fuses form and function in stunning Aspects tap collection

With design informed by in-depth market research into homeowner preferences, the Aspects collection of taps from Mira Showers is carefully crafted to complement any contemporary bathroom while delivering the superior performance and reliability for which the company is renowned.

Its research found that three elements are key for consumers – performance, innovation and style – so the seven designs in the collection cover every style of bathroom shower to be found, from the chunky square-edged Honesty range to the authentic Victorian appearance of the Virtue.

The seven models in the collection provide taps for every space, need and design. Fluency, for example, offers ease of use while Precision is both elegant and space-saving and Revive offers a contemporary pastiche of Victorian styling. Each of the seven designs offers the full range of product types: monobloc, basin and bath pillars, bath filler, and bath shower mixer. And each range works on all pressures, has integrated push button diverters, and has flush fitting aerators for easy cleaning – everything the modern homeowner demands.

The seven designs within the collection are:

Honesty: Mira’s research found that consumers see Cubism as the height of modernity in the bathroom so this range features mirror flat faces, crisp edges and flush surfaces of the body and spout.

Evolve: Evolve brassware is geometrically styled and designed to remove the usual wedge cut-out from the back of the lever and the usual bite-out from the spout for the aerator.

Comfort: Comfort takes inspiration a popular design style but makes it more rounded and curved.

Revive: the Revive style takes period features, such as the capstan taps, but adds a contemporary touch so they complement either a period or a modern new build home.

Virtue: this heritage design features authentic Victorian details such as the indices for hot and cold.

Precision: compatible with many contemporary bathroom suites, the Precision range delivers a distinctive look to the brassware market.

Fluency: this design features a ‘raceway’ shaped control lever that appears to simply hover above spout but can be operated with just a finger or the side of the hand, offering effortless ease of use for all.

With a suite to complement any bathroom style, the Aspects collection of taps from Mira provides a trusted, comprehensive, reliable option for busy trade professionals; while meeting the exacting demands of homeowners when it comes to quality, performance and aesthetic.

Washroom Washroom

Washroom Washroom goes off-site

Innovative washroom design and manufacturer, Washroom Washroom has invested in state-of-the –art production methods to offer a unique off-site service.

With programmes becoming more demanding necessitating ever increasing co-ordination of trades in order to meet deadlines, Washroom has invested significantly in additional factory space to enable the manufacture and build of entire washroom units off-site.

Far from the traditional modular approach favoured on largescale volume projects, such as hotels, Washroom has developed its offering to enable it to offer a bespoke off-site solution for clients to combine the quality, programme and environmental benefits of offsite with individual design solutions.

The new model involves a complete run of washrooms being built full-scale and to the exact site measurements in Washroom’s Essex-based factory and clients are actively encouraged to visit and inspect the washrooms at this stage so that any alterations can be made prior to installation. Once complete, the pre-plumbed washrooms are disassembled and stored ready to transport to site exactly when required and assembled in a fraction of the time of a conventional build.

In addition to enhancing quality and programme, off-site construction offers the opportunity to reduce on-site waste by up to 90% compared to traditional methods of construction.

Trevor Bowers, director at Washroom Washroom commented: “This is another exciting development for us in what has been a tremendous year for Washroom Washroom. A combination of careful on-site surveying by experienced site staff, programming to co-ordinate with other trades and the ability to design and build away from site ensures that build quality is undertaken to the highest of standards.

“The offsite service is part of our complete package of services which also includes 3D printing and scale mock-ups, designed to ensure a client’s aesthetic and performance requirements are fully realised. It’s all part of our dedication to providing the most comprehensive service available to the specifier.

Dallmer Limited

West end wet rooms benefit from elegance of Dallmer drainage channels

A high specification refurbishment and extension project at a residential property in a desirable area of West London has included installation of linear shower drains selected from the extensive range of Dallmer Limited. The 40-week project on the home in Lansdowne Road was carried out by J&Z Construction Ltd under the supervision of the company’s own architects, with the four storey building being completely gutted and an extra level of accommodation added in the roof-space. Two stylish shower spaces were created: one designed as a wet room while the other featured a two metre high glass wall set into a floor channel, with a rain head over. J&Z Construction’s interior designers chose products from the Dallmer range to ensure water was removed unobtrusively but effectively from the floor.

Crown Paints Provides Clean Finish For University Kitchens

Crown Paints Specification Services has helped the University of Birmingham specify a high performance coating with the power to protect in hygiene sensitive areas. Crown Trade Steracryl Anti Bacterial paint has been selected for use across the student kitchens at the university’s Vale Village site in Edgbaston. The coating offers the reassurance of the internationally-renowned SteriTouch® anti bacterial system, which utilises the natural power of silver to limit the growth of problem bacteria, including Salmonella and E-Coli.

Available in a choice of scrubbable matt and durable acrylic eggshell finishes, both offer an extensive colour palette, as well as a highly durable surface capable of withstanding stringent cleaning regimes. By coping with extensive cleaning programmes - including the scrubbing down of surfaces – the paint maintains a clean, fresh finish for the long term and helps to extend redecoration schedules. At Vale Village both scrubbable matt and durable acrylic eggshell have been chosen in a contemporary white shade for the high quality student residences.

The University of Birmingham estates department maintains 4,500 rooms for students across three villages. Vale Village features modern buildings set in a picturesque parkland, complete with a lake and other attractive features.

Geoff Clinton, Maintenance Officer at the University of Birmingham, said: “We were using standard emulsion, but following discussions with Crown Paints we chose an anti bacterial system to deliver a uniform approach to maintaining a clean environment at the student residences.”

The work at Vale Village was carried out by Novus Property Solutions. As well as the Crown Trade Steracryl Anti Bacterial system, Crown Trade Steracryl Mould Inhibiting paint has also been used across the University of Birmingham, for student bathroom and shower areas. Crown Trade Steracryl Mould Inhibiting paint, available in matt and durable acrylic eggshell finishes, can play a key role in areas subject to mould growth such as kitchens, bathrooms and void properties.

Both the matt and acrylic eggshell paints contain an effective fungicide, specially developed to maintain decorated surfaces by inhibiting the development of mould growth on the paint film.

They have also undergone stringent fungal tests carried out to British Standard BS3900:G6. A video about the project can be found at www.youtube.com/crowntradetv There’s also, on the same channel, a video showing the trusted technology behind both Steracryl Mould Inhibiting and Antibacterial Paint in Crown Trade’s ‘Right Paint For The Job’ film.

For more information about Crown Paints’ specification services please contact the Crown Trade Specification Team by calling 0330 0240310, email info@crownpaintspec.co.uk or visit the website at www.crownpaintspec.co.uk

This year, the international jury panel will consist of the American designer, art director and Pentagram partner Abbott Miller, the Swedish architect, designer and founder of Claesson Koivisto Rune (CKR) Eero Koivisto, and both Formica Group inhouse designers Renee Hytry Derrington and Eva Hoernisch.

Entrants are asked to submit their designs on the competition website, www.formica. com/formations, or via email to formica. formations@formica.com by December 182015 and universities wishing to register can get in contact with Formica Group via email.

Mermet

The Ultimetal shading specifiers dream

The latest developments in the Mermet Screen Nature glass fibre based screen fabric set new standards for solar shading.

With its main component glass fibre, minimum use is made of diminishing resources and the system is PVC free, Polyester free meaning it does not give off noxious gases.

Mermet Screen Nature has been tested to Greenguard and OekoTex 100 standards and enjoys an exceptional fire rating.

The fabric construction is very thin, allowing it to be hidden within very small reveals or head-boxes and making it practically invisible when not in use.

Both the sustainable production techniques and discrete appearance when not in use make it a high quality solar shade solution. The attention to detail in the design process means that the system has impressive qualities built in, including:

• Reducing solar gainwith its highly reflective metallised face to the glass over 70% Solar Reflectance is achieved.

• Glare removed - light control is significantly improved with light transmittance values down to 7%, yet external through vision still good (see attached photograph showing River Thames view through Ultimetal).

• Insulation of the room is improved - with the blinds lowered at night the Low-E attributes of the metallised face significantly reduce thermal heat loss through the glazing.

Finally, with a choice from seven colours, an aesthetically sympathetic installation should be assured with Mermet Ultimetal window shading fabric.
