Fire Protection, Structural Strength and Adaptability
Structural fire safety is achieved either by what is called ‘passive protection’ for example fire resistant lining boards and/or ‘active protection’ through the use of smoke ventilation, alarm systems and sprinklers.
For the structural engineer, the material choice within the structural solution will influence the passive and active fire protection strategy.
Ian Quinton, Managing Director of RCMsuppliers of building boards and facade solutions to such high profile structural timber developments as the University of Hertfordshire, discusses the benefits of RCM’s solutions relating to fire regulations and technical specifications for structural timber buildings:
“The Structural timber association recently published the document – 16 Steps to Fire Safety. The document states that structural timber construction processes can reduce the risk of fire through good design, taking simple precautions and ensuring good site security.
A1 Non-Combustible
RCM’s Y-Wall is an adaptable calcium silicate based fibre cement building board, offering excellent fire properties as well as high levels of dimensional stability.
Y-Wall is A1 Non-Combustible and used as a fire rated sheathing board which is applied extensively on both metal and timber frame structures, the product is applied behind all types of facade solutions, as well in floors and roofs, offering a noncombustible classification.
RCM’s Y-Wall is also BBA approved. This offers full technical approval for construction products and systems and is recognised by building control, government departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers and building insurers.

Original FARAL Aluminium Radiators, always appreciated, often imitated since 1966 The choice of many Architects and local authorities for over 50 years, Faral radiators provide the highest heat output achievable from one of the most energy efficient low water content aluminium radiators available today.
Easing the Strain
Marflow Hydronics’ Filterball takes the strain out of maintaining a water distribution system.
Just adding a strainer into a system without regular maintenance can cause massive issues with water quality further down the line, but by utilising a Filterball valve, planned preventative maintenance becomes far easier. Users of the Filterball have found it to be a far simpler approach to cleaning a system. Accessing it and working with it is very easy and so many of the issues connected with more traditional solutions are completely eradicated with the use of just this valve.

TouchControl Fire touchscreen from Advanced sets the standard
Global fire systems business Advanced has launched TouchControl, its new touchscreen fire system repeater and remote control terminal which features Active Maps and zone plans.
TouchControl uses its 10” HD touchscreen to deliver all the panel and network control and monitoring features you’d expect from Advanced, plus dynamic graphics and zone plans called Active Maps.
Active Maps allow any image from a technical drawing, a zone plan, photograph, even a google map image to be used to display fire info, with multiple views available allowing users to interrogate the status of zones in a site from different angles or scales. Advanced’s Map App software makes it simple and easy to add map images and associate them with a zone.
When not used in Active Map view, it features a unique, colour-coded interface that clearly displays device, zone and
network information, using the large 10” HD touchscreen to facilitate easy control and interrogation. Users can immediately identify zones and devices in fire, fault, disablement, test or normal operation via colour-coded status buttons.
TouchControl is a network node in its own right, working in standard or fault tolerant modes. Designed to be recessed and flush fitting, its low profile design will enhance any architectural environment and can be used in areas from receptions to nurses’ stations where network control, aesthetics or simply communicated detailed information are required. The background image can be easily changed to show any image from site plans to logos or products. A surface mount option is also available.
Another feature for its use in public areas is the ability for users to add presentations, company introductions, visitor boards or safety information to run when the fire screen is not reporting fire system information. As soon as the screen is
touched or a fire condition arises, it reverts back to fire operations.
John Newton, Advanced’s Products Manager said: “Advanced customers do not expect us to follow the herd, but deliver something innovative and more useful.
TouchControl is absolutely unique and we think the right way to add touch technology to fire systems. We don’t compromise the touchscreen by reducing its size to fit in a panel and we don’t add cost to a panel that may be out of view. Instead we’ve developed a high quality touchscreen unit that has all the benefits a touchscreen can deliver plus more, such as Active Maps. We have invested significant time ensuring it is easy to install and configure, especially when it comes to adding maps and demand is already high.”
TouchControl operates with Advanced’s three levels of user control, accessed via passcode. Depending on the level of access users can: Evacuate/Mute/Silence/Resound & Reset; View fires/faults/disablements/ alarms/inputs/outputs/supervisory and network via ‘instant filters’; View/enable/ disable zones and devices; Enable/disable outputs by type; Enable Walk Test mode; Test display/zones/outputs/buzzer and LEDs; Quickly access all zones in fire/fault/ disablement/test via ‘instant filters’ and where allowed change status; View 1,000 general and 500 Fire event log and set the network time and date.
TouchControl is compatible with Advanced’s MxPro 4 and 5 panels and Axis EN and Axis AU Fire Systems, with more to follow. Visit http://touchcontrol. advancedco.com for more information, ordering info or to book a demo.
About Advanced Advanced is a world leader in the development and manufacture of intelligent fire systems. The legendary performance, quality and ease-of-use of its products sees them used in prestigious and challenging locations all over the world, from single panel installations to large multi-site networks. Advanced products include complete fire detection systems, multiprotocol fire panels, extinguishing control and fire paging systems.

Sentinel
Sentinel Commercial Launch ‘Plug and Play’ Limescale Prevention Device for Small Commercial Premises
Leading water treatment specialist Sentinel Commercial has added a new 22mm KalGUARD® system package – an ideal size for most small commercial buildings - to its extremely successful scientifically-proven limescale prevention device range. The new 22mm package includes a zinc anode unit, water meter and controller, with the latter pre-set to a 22mm commissioning mode, making this a true ‘plug and play’ solution for light commercial premises such as restaurants, take-away outlets, car washes and laundrettes.
Limescale can have a particularly significant impact on the profitability of businesses that rely on the availability of hot water, since it affects the energy efficiency, reliability and life expectancy of secondary hot water systems and appliances that are central to day-to-day operations.
However, such businesses need not expose themselves to unnecessarily high energy bills, the cost of repairs, business downtime due to breakdowns, and premature capital expenditure for appliance replacement – KalGUARD can protect against the damaging and expensive effects of limescale build-up.
KalGUARD permanently ‘conditions’ water by dosing it with a very low level of stable zinc via an electrolytic process that uses a zinc anode and a copper cathode. This forces naturally-occurring calcium carbonate crystals to form as soft, non-deposit-forming aragonite rather than into hard, depositforming calcite (limescale).
This successful and scientifically proven method of preventing limescale formation is recommended by UK Building Services Compliance Guide to Part L. Furthermore, independent tests carried out at Cranfield University have proven KalGUARD’s ability to reduce limescale drastically.
In comparison with traditional, salt-based water softeners, KalGUARD boasts significant savings on consumables, maintenance and water. With KalGUARD, neither salt nor water are required, while maintenance requirements are minimal. The zinc anode has a lifespan of up to 12 years, after which the anode may require replacement to maintain optimum performance.
As a result, a 22mm KalGUARD system could represent savings of up to £1,400 per year in comparison with a similarly sized, salt-based water softener. ROI is typically approximately 18 months.

Ruukki continues supporting education
With the new conservative government now in place, the priority school building programme (psbp) continues throughout the uk. The psbp is targeted with the challenge of the rebuild or refurbishment of 260 schools which have been assessed and deemed in the worst condition, an initiative with a value of £2.4 Billion which under this scheme is on schedule to see the 260 schools rebuilt by 2017.
Ruukki continues to see leading contractors and architects opting for the Ruukki brand which offers energy efficiency, recyclable materials, a wide choice of materials, colours and shapes.
RIBA award winning work with AHMM Architects.
For Oaklands College project in St Albans, Architects, AHMM opted for Ruukki Forma System with Ruukki PIR Panel overclad with Ruukki Design Palette S10 and other diverse rainscreen materials. AHMM recognised the benefits of Ruukki’s Panels which combine low thermal conductivity ratio and good robust performance, offering the school long term benefits in terms of reduced heating costs and increased fire safety. Ruukki Forma is a complete facade system based on Ruukki’s facade cladding products fixed on top of the Ruukki® energy panel system. Offering a wide range of aesthetic shapes, materials and colour options. As standard Ruukki Forma makes construction easy and delivery includes all required components for a complete wall installation. The College is the first of a larger project for the Smallford Campus of Oaklands College, the two-storey, atriumcentred block accommodates almost 6,000 square metres of new teaching spaces
for Art, Fashion and Design, Entry Level programmes for Learners with Learning Difficulties and general teaching facilities.
The horizontality of the blocks’ façades is interrupted by generouslysized windows and brightly-coloured ventilation panels which look out onto and reference the surrounding green belt landscape. The Project was recognised by RIBA London Region Award in 2013.
Aesthetically pleasing design for education of the future Harris Academy has tested Ruukki’s systems to the limit, with their requirement of cost effectiveness, energy efficiency and design to sit alongside the current main school building which is a locally listed building dating from the 1920s. The Architects, Nicholas Hare, Bam Construction and SD Samuels used Ruukki’s flat panels which were supplied in short sheet lengths to meet the projects complex specification requirements. The PIR panels were chosen due to being light weight and with excellent thermal properties. An excellent solution for facades and especially suited to the requirements of a school or college.
Ruukki, a clear choice for the education sector
Ruukki continues to be considered as the Architects system of choice with ongoing projects at Abingdon & Witney College working with forward thinking Contractor, Tego Ltd and a number of Primary Schools in the near future.
Other projects completed with Tego Ltd Denham Schools Project, including
Great Denham and Short Town Schools in Bedford, both feature Ruukki Flat Panels and also used the Micro Rib Silver systems. Stratford Schools Project includes three schools, Stratford School Academy, Pardes House Primary, Harris Academy Greenwich/ Eltham (detailed above) where Ruukki SP2D Flat Panels have been used in a Silver finish.
Continued support and funds for education
A further £2 billion has been allocated to fund the next phase running until 2021 which will be the school rebuilding and repairs programme for England. Schools Minister Lord Nash said: “As part of this government’s commitment to social justice, we want all children, no matter what their background or where they live, to have access to the best possible schools and to learn in an environment that gives them the knowledge and skills to succeed in modern Britain. These new school buildings will provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for pupils and staff for many years to come.”

Cuilcagh Boardwalk – Northern Ireland
Cuilcagh Mountain Park in County Fermanagh is a “Wetland of International Importance” as designated by the Ramsar Convention as well as being a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) and a Natura 2000 site. So when the next stage of development for this area was planned, one of the longest wooden boardwalks in the world, it was vital that timber used would be of the highest quality and an environmentally sound choice.
Local Company R.T.D. Crawford Ltd were ideally suited to supply the MicroPro® treated timber with the new MicroShades® brown color additive to fulfil the specification for this 1.6km boardwalk, as they are the only producer of MicroPro treated timber in Ireland. Robert Allen, General Manager, at RTD Crawford stated, “The MicroPro treated timber process is the only timber treatment that is certified as an
Environmentally Preferable Product based on Life Cycle Assessment studies. MicroPro is the preferred timber treatment to be used in environmentally sensitive areas.”
“This path is solely to protect the habitat. It has taken thousands of years to develop this naturally. The area is botanically rich with a very diverse range of species of birds, plants and insects” says Richard Watson, Manager of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, which is located near the entrance of the new boardwalk. “This is another chapter in the development of the area which continues to bring thousands of visitors to the area to enjoy the outdoor environment which is particularly special in terms of landscape features.
The design of the MicroPro treated timber boardwalk means that it sits or “floats” above the terrain leaving it undisturbed. The new treated timber boardwalk protects
the rare blanket bog from erosion caused by walkers. MicroPro treated timber was used throughout the project to protect the boardwalk from difficult weather conditions and to protect the sensitive environment of the park.
The boardwalk provides visitors with breathtaking views of the area with the most impressive site being Lough Atona, a lake nestled at the foot of the mountain which was carved out by a glacier during the last ice age approximately 13,000 years ago.
R.T.D. Crawford Ltd is located on a 44 acre site in the heart of Lisbellaw in Co. Fermanagh. The site is home to a modern timber milling facility, producing planned timber for all end uses. The company despatches timber throughout Ireland on a daily basis. For more information, contact their professional sales team on 0044 2866 387315.

Deceuninck launches ‘best-in-class’ Fully Reversible Window
Deceuninck, one of the world’s leading PVC-U systems companies, has launched its all new Fully Reversible Window (FRW). It is best-in-class for weather and thermal performance. But Deceuninck has also designed its FRW to make it easier for architects, specifiers and contractors.
“Deceuninck’s new FRW sets new standards in weather performance, U-values and security,” says Rob McGlennon, Deceuninck Sales Director. “In fact, we designed it to blow all other FRWs out of the water. It significantly improves performance across the board, and has many other benefits for architects, specifiers and contractors.”
Deceuninck’s FRW achieves PAS24 for security and a clean sweep for excellence with 1050Pa water tightness, 600Pa air permeability and 2,400Pa wind loading. It also achieves a 1.2 U-value double glazed and a 0.8 U-value triple glazed using Deceuninck’s patented BlueForce steel wire-foam technology. And with up to 1.4m x 1.4m size maximum and an 80kg weight limit, it is perfect for use in modern buildings with large window apertures.
“Our new FRW is built for the real world,” continues Rob. “The extra screw fixing and lug fixing options mean the fitting doesn’t interrupt the rotation of the window. It also moves the fitting position away from the gearing making it quicker and easier to install. The high weight and size limits and top technical performance mean specifiers know they can get a product which covers all their project’s criteria. And with two hardware options, Peder Nielson or Yale, architects, specifiers and contractors can choose the hardware they like.”
To find out more about Deceuninck’s new FRW, or more about its commercial products, call Rob McGlennon now on 07818 383385. Follow @DeceuninckUK and visit www.deceuninck. com/uk/specification.aspx.

Rewarding CO Initiatives
Kidde customer Wheatley Group has seen its commitment to gas and CO safety recognised by a series of recent awards.
A key component of Wheatley’s success is installation of 10-year guaranteed CO alarms from Kidde, resulting in substantial cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint.
Wheatley Group spans 12 local authority areas across Central Scotland, providing homes and award-winning services to over 100,000 people.
As part of its commitment to gas safety, Wheatley has now completed installation of CO alarms in all 29,055 Group gas properties. The Group is realising major savings using Kidde’s 10LLCO carbon monoxide alarms, enjoying a full 10-year guarantee covering both alarm and sealed-in lithium battery.
The 10LLCO alarm and its digital equivalent 10LLDCO are small in size with a slim profile and can be wall-mounted or used free standing. They are simply activated by the slide-on back plate, so preserving battery freshness until needed, and a tamper resisting self-locking installation system avoids battery theft.
The CO sensors – the key component – are actually tested throughout a 10-year period or longer. Allowing tighter quality controls to be applied, Kidde manufactures its own sensors, based on environmentally friendly de-ionised water. An event activity data log for each alarm is available, upon request from Kidde.

Five Real Reasons to Choose Steel
We often get questions about comparisons of different materials. Very frequently the choice is between steel versus plastic or aluminum. Our choice at Lindab is, and has always been, steel. We will give you 5 real reasons to choose steel for your rainwater system rather than PVC or aluminum.
Most of these arguments go for all steel systems, but we think that we add even more to this fantastic material. We have been processing steel for more than 50 years and we buy over 200 000 tonnes of steel every year, so we feel that we know what we are doing. We also put our products through rigorous testing.
1. Steel has the lowest carbon footprint of all rainwater systems materials
With steel you get a cost effective and environmental friendly installation that is 100 % recyclable. Our Rainline system is made from sheet steel, a raw material that has a natural place in today’s approach towards sustainability.
2.
Steel stays in shape
Virtually all materials are affected by differences in temperature and grows and shrinks as the weather changes. Compared to aluminum and plastic, steel has a lot smaller movement factor. This means that your installation is much more likely to last as connections and fixation points won’t take such a beating as with other materials.
3. It’s really long lived
A rainwater system made of steel can last in excess of 70 years. To aid to the lifespan we rustproof the material with a 275 grams zinc coating. This gives the system a selfhealing quality where scratches and cuts are automatically sealed by zinc ions that migrate to re-coat the uncovered steel.
4.
Strong as steel
Steel is the foundation of all modern construction, and there is a reason for that. Steel is strong. Snow, hail, falling tree branches and other circumstances can easily break a rainwater system made from
aluminum or plastic materials. And even though we recommend that you are careful during the installation, a steel system is much more heavy duty than its competitors.
5. Steel is actually cheaper than plastic or aluminum
The initial cost for a steel rainwater system is higher. We’re not saying that it’s not. But if you take into consideration the lifespan and maintenance needed for the respective systems, you actually save money. The lifecycle cost for a steel system is considerably lower than any other system out there.

Hauraton Limited
Two Hauraton surface drainage systems installed at Maltby Academy School, Rotherham.
Early in 2012 it was decided refurbish the older building at Maltby Academy and build a new open plan business / enterprise centre and sport science block. In addition, the old gymnasium was to be converted into a performing and creative arts facility.
The £10.9 million contract for the re-development was awarded to BAM Construction of Leeds, in June 2012. The site was fully operational by September 2013. Architects for the new buildings were Bond Bryan, Sheffield office.
With the site being quite flat, and the old and new buildings’ surrounded by paved and asphalted surfaces, it was essential rainwater is drained effectively. Two Hauraton channel systems were chosen to drain surface water: RECYFIX® PRO 100 with FIBRETEC® C250 gratings for the asphalted yards and car park and RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels for the paved walkways, these providing an unobtrusive, narrow line of slots in the paved surfaces.

Vandersanden Group
Using openwork bonds to create decorative brick facades
Belgian brick and pavers manufacturer, Vandersanden Group has supplied facing bricks used to construct the striking De Wiek Community Centre in Zele. The building façades are extremely large yet still visually attractive. Michel Zaan, project architect explains; “The special, protruding header bond is very striking, causing a play of shadows in the relief of the façade making it much softer.” On the south and west exterior walls the header bonds have been omitted, resulting in a façade with a decorative openwork bond. The south façade acts as sun protection and as a privacy screen for the windows at the rear. On the west façade, the openings in the brickwork bond serve as ventilation. In order to show the brickwork bond to its best advantage, the architect chose the Vandersanden Quartis product which is a uniform light-grey colour.

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation
Bauder BioSOLAR Generates Green Roof and PV Synergy
Flat roof manufacturer Bauder launched its revolutionary solar PV mounting system for biodiverse or extensive green roofs, Bauder BioSOLAR, at the inaugural ‘European Biosolar Roof Conference’ that took place in September at City Hall in London. Designed primarily for new build applications where environmentally friendly solutions are required to meet planning and BREEAM requirements; this integrated system addresses the misconception that green roof and PV technologies are mutually exclusive options.
The construction industry has long been calling for rooftop solutions that include a duality of technologies for environmental advantage, and a biosolar roof delivers just that providing reciprocal benefits in terms of maximising the energy output from the PV module and the footprint for the green roof. Bauder’s innovative BioSOLAR system uses the substrate and vegetation to provide the ballasted installation mechanism, removing the need to penetrate the waterproofing to secure the mounting units to the roof and making the most of the available area for vegetation, enabling the entire roof to qualify as a biodiverse green roof.
A key feature of Bauder’s unique system is that the front edge of the polycrystalline PV panel is raised 300mm above the finished green roof level, allowing light and moisture to reach beneath the panels whilst ensuring the mature vegetation will not shade the panels and can be easily maintained. The mixture of sunny, shaded and sheltered areas together with a variable depth of FLL compliant extensive substrate gives a matrix of different habitats that allow a broader range of plant species to thrive, and a rich foraging environment for bees and insects.
The biosolar solution also delivers advantages to the building, as the cooling effect of the vegetation and water held within the green roof system preserves the ambient temperature around the PV array, which in turn increases the solar output by over 5%.
The PV mounting frame features a 100% recycled high-density polyethylene base board and consists of just three components - a quick fix angle support, profile module rail and module fixings – that make for an extremely quick and simple installation process.
Although well suited to new build applications, the Bauder BioSOLAR system can also be retrofitted on many existing roofs without the need for any structural modification to the building; and with Bauder able to supply and install all of the waterproofing, green roof and PV elements you can be confident of the significant synergy effects created by this energy efficient and cohesive system.
New illbruck Building Protection Range offers the complete solution for airtightness and vapour management
tremco illbruck has recently launched a new Building Protection Range that gives specifiers and installers total peace of mind in this complex, but vitally important area. The key to the offer is compatibility between the products in the range. tremco illbruck have extensively tested the products, both in their laboratory and on-site to determine which products work with each other, dramatically reducing the risk of products not bonding together and putting at risk the integrity of the entire system. It’s now possible to successfully link the window interfaces and building fabric membranes with products from one source.
Armaflex Ultima: flexible technical insulation material with extremely low smoke density
Armaflex Ultima made by Armacell is the first flexible insulation material to achieve the European fire class BL-s1, d0, offering an extremely low smoke density for improved fire safety in buildings. Armaflex Ultima was developed on the basis of the innovative Armaprene technology which is patented both in the USA (US Patent No. 8,163,811) and Europe (European Patent No. 2 261 305).
To ensure that the material is installed reliably, Armacell has developed adhesives especially for Armaflex Ultima, including the reduced solvent RS850 product to help meet the demands of sustainable building schemes.
Energy saving refurbishment with Remmers iQ Therm system
A listed 19th Century former Schoolhouse overlooking the Dublin mountains was renovated and extended to create a new energy efficient residential family home.
Due to the build up of condensation behind conventional insulation when applied to single leaf construction, it became apparent that a “breathable insulation system” would be required.
Remmers IQ Therm was chosen as it has the highest level of insulation for given thickness of breathable systems.

Bauder
Queen Mary University Library collecting solar energy
The library roof at the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) had surpassed its natural life expectancy and been experiencing considerable water ingress, requiring urgent remedial work to prevent disruption to students.
In order to determine the most appropriate remedial solution the 2,000m2 roof area was surveyed by flat roof specialists Bauder, who proposed stripping the existing roof covering down to the structural metal deck and replacing it with a high quality and long lasting bituminous system. The client also decided to use this opportunity to make a positive and visible contribution to the university’s carbon reduction programme through the addition of energy producing solar panels.

Coxdome trade range sheds new light on technology at Essex school
A six week contract carried out by a building company experienced in roofing work, comprised of a series of rooflights on an East London school upgraded to insulated, twin-skin units from the Jet Cox Coxdome Trade Range: offering improved natural daylighting as well as enhancing the all-round energy and weather performance. The work, at the All Saints Catholic School in Dagenham, was carried out by Forest Gate Construction earlier this year without any inconvenience to the school’s staff or pupils. Although the flat and barrel vaulted roof areas were in a generally good state of repair, the estates’ department responsible for the buildings’ upkeep took the decision to replace the existing rooflights over the computer suite and design & technology teaching space.

Howarth Timber engineered solutions secures fourth factory
Howarth Timber Engineered Solutions has acquired a fourth factory, extending its reach into the South West having completed the purchase of Gloucestershirebased Paul Timber Engineering Ltd.
Paul Timber Engineering, which has operated from its current site in Fairford since 2003, supplies Boise I Joist, metal web floor joists and roof trusses to regional builders and merchants and has built up an enviable reputation in the process.
Following the purchase, the Paul Timber Engineering site will become Howarth Timber Engineered Solutions’ fourth factory, sitting alongside its current sites in the North West, East Yorkshire and Suffolk.
Nordic Bronze was selected at an early design stage for the colonnade and other façade elements. The building’s designer Matt Brook, director of architects Broadway Malyan, said: “We wanted to use a material for the expressed frame that would reference the area’s industrial heritage, particularly of metalworking. In addition, the strong, natural colour of the gradually weathering bronze complements the surrounding historic brick and sandstone buildings.”
The colonnade and primary structural elements expressed on the exterior of the building are set out on a 7.9m structural grid and clad in sheet Nordic Bronze, with the principal elevations being clad in either perforated Nordic Bronze or glazed with a curtain wall capped with perforated Nordic Bronze fins. Both are set out vertically on a 1.128m grid sub-module of the primary structural grid. ENQUIRY 71

The team in Fairford has a wealth of experience, and the factory is well positioned to service the South and South West.
“We will shortly undertake substantial investment in the site, which will involve doubling the size of the existing factory, expanding the design office, and installing additional high performance saws and presses.”

Stainless steel shingles for 80,000 sq. ft. M&S
Architects Cooper Cromar specified UGINOX® stainless steel shingles for the façade of the £45m, 80,000 sq. ft. Marks and Spencer on Glasgow Fort retail park. Described by the architects as ‘an elegant stainless steel-clad box’, the frontage forms a distinctive new entrance feature alongside that of Wagamama when approached from the motorway. The 0.6mm thick stainless steel is estimated as having saved around 18 tonnes in façade weight over an equivalent in zinc or copper. Aperam spokesman Kevin Jones explained, “The brief was to match the existing building dating from 2006 so 2K, one of the smoothest polished finishes, was selected. Its low surface roughness prevents accumulation of fine contaminants while providing exceptional corrosion resistance.”

Frese, the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of pressure independent balancing and control valves has extended its range of flanged PICVs targeted at the larger cooling and heating applications such as air handling units and plate heat exchangers.
The firm has developed a larger scale valve, the PICV Optima DN100 which will handle 25 litres of flow per second. This capacity makes it ideal for controlling flow and pressure in larger scale heating and cooling units.
The Frese Optima PICV is an intelligent control valve that maintains balance in the system, controls the room temperature and ensures that pressure fluctuations do not affect the valve performance, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate. The Optima PICV replaces a traditional balancing valve and 2 port control valve, and eliminates the need for additional differential pressure control valves in a system.
Through such accurate control these valves can offer up to a 50% saving on pump energy costs and also lead to a major reduction on energy bills as boilers and chillers work more efficiently.
Contour the leading manufacturer of Low Surface Temperature (LST) radiators and guards, introduces new round top radiators into its range of LST radiator units. The new round top radiators replace the ‘compact’ style of panel emitters and are available across Contour’s LST radiator collection. Their innovative design means they produce up to an impressive 17% more heat Watts than the previous emitters of the same size. With round top radiators available in up to 160 size variants across single convector , double panel plus and double convector models, Contour now provides an LST solution for virtually every room size and environment.

Marflow Hydronics
Easing the strain with the Filterball
Users of Marflow Hydronics’ Filterball are increasingly finding that the valve is taking the strain out of cleaning and maintaining a water distribution system. Despite popular belief, without a proper maintenance schedule, strainers can actually cause water quality to decline. Furthermore, even if they are regularly checked, if the right products aren’t used alongside them, then air in the system could become another major issue. This is where products like the Filterball have been designed to help. The Filterball is a compact combined isolation valve and strainer unit and it’s been deliberately designed so that it can be easily accessed for cleaning or maintenance.

Ruskin
Ruskin Launches natural ventilation business
Called Airolution, this service will provide complete natural ventilation solutions for commercial buildings including system design; manufacture of all equipment, supply of equipment, controls, installation and commissioning then 12 months later a Ruskin Health Check. The company, which has been manufacturing ventilation equipment in the UK for over 40 years and has factories in Kent and Shropshire, already supplies a complete range of products suitable for natural ventilation systems. Now it is adding the design expertise and logistics required to provide a complete service for the building engineering industry and its clients. Airolution is different to anything currently available on the market because every component of the system is tested together to ensure the final system meets the design brief and aspirations of the building owner and operator. It is then delivered to site, installed, tested and commissioned before handing over to the building’s operating team. But that is not the final involvement as Ruskin go back 12 months later to make sure that the client is happy with how the system is working.

AET
Enhance health and productivity in offices with AET Flexible Space under floor air conditioning systems
Underfloor systems are commonly used in office environments, utilising the plenum beneath a raised floor as the ventilation zone. At one major AET project the facilities manager stated that staff comfort was a major consideration in selecting the system. He added “it is not possible to keep all of the people happy all of the time from a temperature point of view and in the past we expected to achieve perhaps 80% satisfaction. However with the AET Flexible Space system a blind study showed that around 98% of users indicated they were satisfied.” Well-designed indoor environments can be a huge benefit to businesses and the modularity and personal control of AET Flexible Space systems could lead to enhanced health and productivity for workers.

neaco to introduce brand new products at the Build Show
neaco’s appearance at the inaugural Build Show exhibition, taking place from 6 – 8 October at the NEC in Birmingham, will introduce two brand new product innovations with balustrade featuring LED under-lighting and structural glass with fabric inserts.
Stand B3/506 will showcase the new products as the latest of a multitude of design options offered by neaco’s range of contemporary balustrade, balconies and aluminium flooring systems. Other recent product developments on display will include Elan semi-structural glass balustrade, a selection of contemporary stanchion designs and Neatdek 188, a new decking system featuring concealed drainage gaps for safer footing and greater privacy.
neaco’s UK Business Development Manager, Peter Melia, said: “The Build Show is the perfect platform for the launch of these brand new products. neaco is a company with a rich pedigree of innovation and our policy of continual product development has delivered some exciting results once again in 2015. The LED under-lighting further enhances the high architectural aesthetic which characterizes our Spectrum
balustrade range whilst our structural glass fabric inserts include a wide variety of textile patterns which can add colour, texture and style to design schemes. We are looking forward to discussing them with designers, construction professionals, tradespeople and selfbuilders at the Build Show.”
With a unique T-bar grille design which appears to be closed but is actually open, Neatdek 188 completely restricts the view from above and below and keeps litter and other items on the surface for easy cleaning. The absence of gaps on the foot contact area also makes it safe to walk in any type of footwear, including stilettos.
neaco’s UK business development manager, Peter Melia, said: “Neatdek 188’s gap-free surface makes it ideal for raised flooring because it provides greater privacy. For regular decking applications, the T-bar profile provides excellent drainage and ventilation but there is no problem with litter falling through and accumulating underneath, and similarly there is no danger of accidentally dropping valuable items below. Neatdek 188 also offers a significant advantage over regular decking and metal grating with its safe footing making it an excellent option for all types of flooring,
including bridges and public spaces where pedestrian safety is paramount.”
neaco’s Elan semi-structural glass is a stylish and minimalist alternative to traditional balustrade solutions. Most balustrade designs secure glass infill panels in place by attaching them to the stanchions with a clip, but Elan’s glass panels are secured by a top rail above and a subtle floor channel below. The result is a sleek appearance, an economical use of materials and an easy-to-install solution. Designed for nonraked installations, Elan is also available as a modular balcony system complete with neaco’s aluminium grille flooring.
Available in powder coated aluminium or stainless steel - or a combination of both – neaco’s Spectrum balustrade range includes a comprehensive choice of infills, from toughened glass and rails to mesh, tension wire and perforated panels. Aluminium Spectrum is available in a wide variety of solid, metallic and wood-effect finishes which are warm to the touch.
The Spectrum range also includes a wide choice of glass-panelled Juliet and walk-on balconies. All neaco products are backed by a class-leading Lifetime Guarantee – further information is available at www.neaco.co.uk

Quick and easy fit with Garador steel frames
Purchasing a Garador Up & Over garage door with a steel frame makes the installation quicker, as you simply need to fit the frame straight to the brickwork with as little as 7 fixings for a canopy gear door and 11 fixings for a retractable gear door.
The use of a Garador steel frame which is galvanised to protect against rust, eliminates the need for a timber sub-frame, which will often warp or rot over time.
The steel frame also results in a more accurate installation, without the need to fill in any unsightly gaps with strips of PVC as is often the case with a timber sub-frame.
John Fredericks Plastics partners with Halo to develop exclusive offering: Rustique 3
As a long-standing fabricator of Halo PVC-U systems, Huddersfield-based John Fredericks Plastics was pleased to partner with the industry-leading profile supplier to develop their new and exclusive triple glazed solution.
John Fredericks’ MD Steve Darkins explains: “We’re extremely proud of the new ‘Rustique 3’ system we have unveiled in partnership with Halo. It has received significant investment and spent a long time in development to ensure that it would meet the needs of the industry.
“We listened to feedback from customers and colleagues and, following the Triple Glazing Debate last year, we created what we feel is the ideal profile system for triple glazing applications. It has been generally agreed that, if triple glazing was to bring real, tangible benefits over double glazing then the optimum unit size should be 44mm overall, which is why we are so pleased to offer Rustique 3 which will accommodate a 44mm unit and still provide pleasing aesthetics to the product. It will be exclusively available to customers of John Fredericks Plastics, adding an extremely energy-efficient A++ product to our clients’ already diverse portfolios.
“We’re able to offer the system in our expansive range of foils as standard, and there is also the potential for bespoke foiling options.”
Glazing ‘The Waitrose Way’ in Chester
The VS-1 by GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain is a new type of curtain walling which is ideal for achieving aesthetically superior buildings featuring large vertical spans of glass or meeting complex designs. It is a mullion only system in which the glass wall visually ‘floats’ as the façade of a new highprofile superstore clearly demonstrates. The new Waitrose supermarket at Boughton retail centre in Chester benefits from GLASSOLUTIONS VS-1, allowing plenty of natural light into the store. The store’s bronze rainscreen cladding is matched sympathetically by the exterior real bronze fins carried on the VS1 system and the bronze PPC mullions internally.
Best access for Best Western visitors
Welcoming customers to the recently refurbished, Best Western Hotel in Brome, TORMAX was contracted to install an automatic sliding door system to the main entrance.
Delivering a solution that subtly blends with the building, the discrete sliding door is powered by the in-house designed, TORMAX Win Drive 2201 door drive. With an exceptionally slim profile, the Win Drive has a long-standing reputation for reliability worldwide and an exceptional service life can be expected.
“We wanted to offer visitors the upmarket welcome of an automatic entrance but needed to counter this with consideration for the historic nature of the building,” explains Brian Keane, MD for Cameron Ventures Group, owners of Best Western Brome Grange.
The result of careful research at the TORMAX HQ in Switzerland, the Win Drive 2201 automatic sliding door operator is capable of smoothly opening either a single-leaf sliding door of up to 120kg or a double set of doors weighing 100kg per leaf. Although only measuring just 142mm x 100mm the Win Drive can still offer an impressive opening width of up to 2000mm clear pass through space.

Fakro
Conservation roof windows for variable installation depth
With over 250 size and glazing options, FAKRO not only offers the largest standard range of roof windows in conservation style but routinely manufactures them to bespoke requirements. In conservation areas, planners are increasingly favouring window positioning low within the roofline so FAKRO’s choice of 3 installation depths and scope to fit either to rafters or battens is a major benefit. No other manufacturer does this and for slates in particular, installing roof windows in such a way gives them a neat and unobtrusive appearance. For deeply profiled tiles too the facility to raise installation depth is similarly effective. For slates, an ELJ flashing is used with windows fitted 3cm lower than the standard installation depth.

Crittal Windows
Supermarket selects Crittall windows
Successful supermarket chain, Lidl, faced an unusual challenge with its plans to develop a store on the Lower Bristol Road, one of the main routes into the city of Bath. Occupying the chosen site was an empty and vandalised single storey industrial building circa 1966. Lidl invariably plumps for new-build stores but, having split the acquisition of the site with a property developer, the new owners’ demolition plans were thwarted by an unexpected Grade II listing. The reason for English Heritage’s attention was the mode of construction of the otherwise unremarkable structure. The 57,000 sq ft. building was the first example in the UK of the use of the Mero Space Frame. Safety and savings with new advances to Crown Trade Timonox
For more than 40 years, Crown Trade’s Timonox flame retardant system has played a key role in fire safety..
Now a major advance in research and development has seen Crown Paints improve the Crown Trade Timonox upgrade system, which is used on walls and ceilings to achieve the class 0 status required by legislation.
Only one coat of Crown Trade Timonox Upgrade Basecoat, followed by two coats of Crown Trade Timonox Emulsion topcoat, is all it takes to offer protection against the rapid spread of flames and improve a Class 4 surface to a Class 0. Previously four coats were required.
David Spicer, Crown Paints’ Specification Technical Manager, said: “All surfaces painted with conventional paints have the potential to cause fire to spread very quickly throughout a building.
“Even previously noncombustible surfaces, such as plasterboard covered in layers of old paint, can become a mass of flames in seconds.
“This is a particular problem in common access and circulation areas. Now, as a result of the reformulation, we have now reduced the system to three coats, which offers clients considerable savings in labour charges.”
The technological advances mean that, as well as offering the trusted level of protection that Crown Trade Timonox is renowned for, the system retains its excellent application qualities.
Johnson Tiles heads to the top of the trend list with new Loft and Soho ranges
Johnson Tiles is spearheading the on-trend lived-in look with the launch of two new ranges, Loft and Soho.
Inspired by the aged and imperfect, Loft has been created using the latest technology and advanced texturing techniques to produce a look of stripped and distressed wood in a porcelain tile. Each pack contains a random mixture of 280x170mm tiles that work together in a choice of layout options including herringbone.
The realistic effects are enhanced by a blend of beige, grey and denim tones and the design even replicates the appearance of planks that still bear the remnants of scratches and flecked paints. The overall result is a modern vintage look that adds the real character of wood to a floor or wall, with all the practicalities of tiling.
Continuing the handcrafted trend, Johnson Tiles’ new satin finish Soho wall tile range has six different design options all with strong geometric patterns. Loops, 3D-effect squares and gridlines and rounded, soft shapes adorn each 140x140mm tile, enhanced by four plain tiles in complementary colours of white, grey, blue and beige.
Darren Clanford, Johnson Tiles’ Creative Director, says: “We stay one step ahead by working closely with interior designers to create products that aren’t just timely for trends but are exciting, unique and innovative.”

Safety, Security & Fire Protection
Automist provides “Best Value” fire suppression solution for contemporary but sensitive conversion of Regency-style building.
Plumis Automist has been used to provide an innovative fire safety solution for the conversion of Villiers House, a Regencystyle building in the historic centre of the spa town of Leamington Spa into 40 stylish apartments. Special treatment was necessary to preserve the historic features of the building whilst achieving the contemporary design that the architects, Warwick-based Robothams envisaged. Automist was used to provide a compensatory alternative means of fire protection for 39 of the 40 apartments, which were open plan and did not have a separate lobby to protect the escape route.
Robothams had worked with Mainpoint Fire Protection of Cheltenham on previous contracts and knew that Alan Gatenby, Mainpoint’s Fire Protection Consultant would be able to recommend a suitable solution. Alan had no hesitation in specifying the use of Automist, which uses water mist to suppress incipient fires before they can do any damage to properties, fixtures and fittings. The Automist system
is activated utilising a dedicated heat alarm as recommended in Approved Document B, effectively eliminating nuisance alarms. Dependent upon requirements either hard wired or wireless detectors can be used. The Automist pump unit with integrated control unit was connected to the domestic water supply and requires only 6 litres of water per minute per nozzle to provide optimum fire suppression, which in comparison to traditional sprinklers minimises run-off and consequential water damage.
Warwick District Council Building Control Officers requested a Fire Engineered Report to reassure them that Automist would be suitable for installation in a building of the size of Villiers House. This was carried out by Graham Green on behalf of London Bridge Associates Ltd who was happy to concur with its use and consequently, 39 Automist units were installed. Paul Owen, Technical Manager of Spitfire Properties LLP, the contractor on the development would be
happy to recommend Automist for use in similar projects. “The Plumis Automist system integrated very well into our high specification apartments. Aesthetically the product also worked well as it was installed around the base of the kitchen tap.”
For further information on this project or the Plumis Automist range of water-mist suppression solutions call Plumis on +44 (0) 20 7871 3899, visit www.plumis.co.uk or email info@plumis.co.uk

BSRIA
Safety, security and fire – an integrated approach
Can you name the person responsible for the safety and security of your building, its occupants and its contents?
Are they the type who makes waves?
If the answer to either of these questions is no, you should be worried.
Over the past few years BSRIA has been monitoring and analysing the emergence of smart technologies in buildings, and the impact that this is having on everyday life. It is no surprise that safety, security and fire have been in the vanguard in exploiting new technologies.
While there have long been fewer fatalities in workplace fires, a key issue here is in protecting the key installations and assets in a building. An obvious example lies in fire extinguishing systems which, if activated by a false alarm can damage or wreck valuable equipment, resulting in the potential loss of essential data as well as the halting of business activity. It is no surprise therefore that, in the UK as elsewhere, the leading fire detection suppliers have been focussing on more reliable systems that deliver fewer false alarms, for example through combining a number of independent tests before an alarm is triggered.
Potentially of course, smart buildings can address wider health and safety needs. And with work stress and long hours increasingly recognised as a health risk, providing a healthier and more comfortable office environment can improve health, and with it productivity, a win-win situation all round. Building cybersecurity is an issue which is being seen as more important almost by the hour. Your company security officer, with whom you should by now be on extremely friendly terms, needs to have a grasp of both the theory of it and the practical issues.

ENQUIRY 154
The uk’s biggest independent timber and panel product distributor James Latham, has supplied 880m2 of western red cedar for the construction of four luxury holiday homes in talland, south east cornwall.
The timber was machined to a special tongue and groove cladding profile and was used for the exterior cladding of the impressive properties. It was specified for its durability and low maintenance qualities as well as its ability to retain an attractive appearance when weathered. Award winning London architectural practice, Mador Architects were commissioned to design these luxury properties which have been sold to individuals for second homes and investment opportunities. The team wanted to create prestige holiday homes that have a natural appearance and likeness to a modern alpine lodge.
To achieve this look they designed the building to incorporate wooden cladding in its construction, surrounded with large terraces to take advantage of the views over the bay. It was important that the timber length was over 3.3m as they wanted to avoid butt joints which would spoil the façade’s natural look and feel. This was a hurdle that James Latham was able to advise on as Western Red Cedar produces long lightweight lengths of timber with a fine straight grain making this specie easy to cut, saw, machine and fix.
It was also essential that the wood used for the cladding was durable and would cope with the South East of England’s varied and unpredictable climate, requiring little maintenance, while at the same time providing a quality and natural looking finish. With natural resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage (fibres in the timber contain natural preservatives that are toxic to decay-causing fungi) Western Red Cedar is one of the world’s most durable species and remains the premier choice for timber cladding.
