Meanwhile, the CLC highlights that the UK construction industry offers one of the biggest and most easily deliverable opportunities to grow the UK economy. The construction sector is worth 9% of GDP to the UK economy each year and employs in total just over 2.63m people.

Within the CPA’s membership is vital expertise, available to Government, which will be vital to successful delivery of key infrastructure projects, retrofitting and new housing.

Of the infrastructure and construction pipeline the Government pipeline of projects 25-30% is public sector. In addition, through setting long term policy frameworks in regulated markets and directly influencing private sector investment, for example through the planning system, the reach of Government extends to the entire sector.

“Maintaining stability across the sector’s pipeline of projects is the single biggest factor to enable us to enhance productivity, invest in skills and innovation and ultimately deliver growth for the economy and the infrastructure and housing the UK needs,” maintains Mark Reynolds, co-chair of the CLC. As well as the importance of infrastructure and recognising the drive towards Net Zero, the CLC has also focused on housing as a key consideration for future support. It is highlighting the significant social and economic implications for the country by failing to address industry issues and following advice on how to tackle the housing crisis. It warns that failure to do so could undermine nearly 400,000 jobs, cost over £20bn in lost economic activity, and generate £3bn less investment in affordable housing.

Glenigan releases 2023 review of construction companies Morgan Sindall topped Glenigan’s rankings of the industry’s top construction companies in 2023 after winning £2.2 billion-worth of work.

The company edged out Kier after landing 273 individual contracts, also more than any other contractor.

Morgan Sindall was ranked first in three of Britain’s 11 economic regions, which was more than any other contractor.

Morgan Sindall’s successes ranged from an £80 million concrete overlay job on junctions 5-7 of the M27 in Hampshire (Project ID: 23063400) to the £81.4 million second phase of the South Thamesmead residential development in Bexley (Project ID: 22301225).

In the East of England, Morgan Sindall had an order book of £353 million. Work in the region included the £65 million Margaretting bypass near Chelmsford (Project ID: 23018058).

Morgan Sindall’s biggest regional presence is in London, where its 2023 orders totalled £761 million and the company was ranked second in Glenigan’s regional Top 10. This capital haul included an £88.5 million railway

Morgan Sindall was also top in the North West with an annual order book totalling £295 million, including a £70 million cultural centre at Accrington in Lancashire (Project ID: 23030400).

In Wales, the company amassed £108 million-worth of work in 2023, including

a £30 million school in Haverfordwest (Project ID: 23176932).

After finishing top in 2022, Kier slipped down to second place last year but still added £2.1 billion-worth of work to the company’s order book. Bouygues’ 2023 order book totalled £1.9 billion and was boosted by the £1.3 billion Lower Thames Crossing scheme (Project ID: 91161081), which guaranteed third place in the top construction companies league table for the UK arm of the French giant. The firm’s joint venture partner on the scheme, Murphy, finished seventh.

Wates ran in fourth – up one place from the end of 2022 – after increasing its annual order book by 20% to just under £1.7 billion.

The industry’s big players are looking busy with nine contractors ending 2023 with order books valued at £1 billion or more.

Winners of world’s largest built environment photography competition revealed The winners of the Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) coveted photography competition have been announced.

Photographers pitted their best shots against one another in CIOB’s Art of Building contest, the world’s largest photography competition which shows buildings and construction as works of art.

Judges whittled down more than 1,500 entries to 15 final photographs and members of the public were allowed to vote for their favourite online. Meanwhile, judges also picked their favourite image.

The winning shot was captured by Bangladesh’s Azim Khan Ronnie who submitted a stunning image of the National Mosque of Bangladesh. It shows visitors taking part in group prayers and they can be seen neatly lined up as they stand, sit, kneel 2.

and bow. More than 2,000 voters picked their favourite image and Azim’s picture secured 68 per cent of the votes – a landslide victory.

Meanwhile, Belgium’s Alain Schroeder’s image titled Bricks – also captured in

Bangladesh – scooped the Judges’ Choice crown this year. It shows some of the dangerous conditions some people work in at brick factories in the country.

Alain said: “Bangladesh needs a lot of material to push forward its development and that is why you can see a lot of brick factories in the country – where men, women and even children work in difficult and dangerous conditions. The men in the image are covered with dust, transforming them into earth statues, which endangers their health.”

Both winning photographers will receive a £1,500 cash prize.

MPs back calls for National Retrofit Strategy The cross-party Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has raised concerns over the UK’s lack of preparedness in its report on ‘Heat resilience and sustainable cooling’, after the world’s hottest year on record.

The EAC’s report makes recommendations to the Government based on written and oral evidence given by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

RIBA President Muyiwa Oki said: “(This) report is another stark warning about our warming planet – and the dangers it brings to both people and our built environment.

“It positively echoes our calls to accelerate action on heat adaptation measures as part of a well-funded National Retrofit Strategy and expand urban green space. These “no regret” solutions bring great benefits, not only mitigating the impacts of extreme heat, but also by supporting healthier lives.

“We hope the Government urgently acts on these recommendations and utilises our professional expertise – architects are critical to the delivery of a sustainable, more resilient built environment.”

The EAC recommends nature-based solutions which offer important passive cooling measures and additional cobenefits. Parks, trees, water bodies and green infrastructure - such as green roofs – can have significant cooling effects and also help biodiversity and air quality.

The Government must adopt a range of these measures, particularly in areas where the ‘urban heat island’ effect typically raises temperatures, it says, for example, London can be up to 8°C warmer than surrounding rural areas.

EAC Chair, Rt Hon Philip Dunne MP, said: “Tackling overheating at scale will not be a quick or easy undertaking.

Clear collaboration between Government departments and local authorities is necessary, supported by a clear messaging campaign and a pipeline of funding and skilled retrofitters to undertake the work needed.

Existing Government policy fails to grasp the urgency of the task at hand. A Minister with oversight on heat resilience must be appointed to oversee this important work.”

Planning secured for new campus Scott Brownrigg’s design for a new life sciences campus on a 15 acre site on the outer edge of Cambridge have received planning approval.

Designed for BioMed Realty, the new park provides over 500,000 sq ft flexible laboratory and office space, aimed at life sciences, biotechnology and traditional office occupiers.

Buildings on the new park will be energy efficient, and speculatively designed to suit the diverse range of end user needs within the Cambridge market with potential for multi or single occupation.

New BTR development completes GRAHAM has announced the successful completion of the Pall Mall Press project, a new 22-storey residential tower in Liverpool.

The development, led by Ridgeback Group and designed by Falconer Chester Hall, signifies a transformative addition to Liverpool’s skyline, delivering 336 apartments for the build-to-rent (BTR) sector.

Spanning 282,617 sq ft, Pall Mall Press is a striking 22-storey tower with a mix of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments.

The design, characterised by a concrete frame and brick façade with punch windows, seamlessly integrates into the existing urban environment.

MMC sector may struggle without fresh Government approach The Built Environment Committee has published a letter to the Government following its inquiry into the future of modern methods of construction (MMC) in housing.

If the Government wants the sector to be a success, it needs to take a step back, acquire a better understanding of how it works and the help that it needs, set achievable goals and develop a coherent strategy.

The Government’s approach to MMC is in disarray. Millions of pounds of public money has been invested, but the money has not been backed by a coherent strategy and set of measurable objectives. Some Category 1 (modular) MMC firms have failed financially, though with the right approach it could still play an important role in the building of much-needed housing.

These are some of the findings and recommendations published today by the House of Lords Built Environment Committee following its inquiry on the future of modern methods of construction.

There is evidence of real barriers to MMC, such as risk aversion on the part of warranty providers, insurance companies and insufficient clarity for building regulations. However, the Government appears to have made limited effort to understand and address these challenges.

Lord Moylan, Chair of the Built Environment Committee, said: “Moderns methods of construction are successfully used to construct homes abroad and build high-rise and non-residential buildings in the UK, but this success has thus far eluded the building of MMC homes in meaningful numbers.

The inquiry was established following the collapse and closure of several Category 1 MMC companies during 2022 and 2023.

“In the context of an ageing skilled workforce and the need for greater building sustainability, MMC has shown some promise.

“We heard evidence that the Government couldn’t achieve its housebuilding targets without a sizeable contribution from the MMC sector.

“Our inquiry found that the Government has not set out clear objectives for the funding it provided the MMC sector. Homes England has not given any clear metrics as to how success is to be measured and over what timescale.

“The Government needs to change tack.

Simply throwing money at the sector hasn’t worked. If it wants to encourage MMC it must acquire a much deeper understanding of how it works, develop a clear strategy, and demonstrate leadership.”

Lesley Lokko to receive Royal Gold Medal 2024 for architecture The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has today (18th January 2024) announced that Professor Lesley Lokko, the acclaimed Ghanaian-Scottish architect, educator, author and curator, will receive the Royal Gold Medal 2024 for architecture.

One of the world’s highest honours in architecture – presented on behalf of His Majesty the King – the medal recognises Lokko’s commitment to championing diverse approaches to architectural practice and education.

people and organisations I have worked with that share my goals.

“I came into architecture seeking certainties, looking for answers. Instead, I found questions and possibilities, far richer, more curious, and more empathetic ways to interpret and shape the world.

Architecture gave me language, in all its forms — visual, written, built, performed — and that language, in turn, has given me such hope.”

For over two decades, Lokko has devoted her career to amplifying under-represented voices and examining the complex relationship between architecture, identity and race, profoundly impacting architectural education, dialogue and discourse.

Her work to “democratise architecture” has been hailed by the RIBA Honours Committee 2024 as a “clarion call for equitable representation in policies, planning, and design that shape our spaces”.

In 2023, Lokko was awarded an OBE for services to architecture and education and was appointed Curator of the 18th International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Titled ‘The Laboratory of the Future’, the exhibition placed Africa at its centre and included its first ever educational component. The Biennale College Architettura saw 50 students from across

A sustainable approach to creating a world-leading facility Queen’s University’s new £17.5m business school building sits within its Riddel Hall Campus, in South Belfast.

he site identified by the University, consists a lawn that sits in front of the Grade II listed Riddel Hall building and a surface carpark, some 4.5m below and enclosed by mature woodland.

The building contains differing types and sizes of teaching and learning accommodation for post- graduate students, together with facilities to support the School’s executive education and leadership programmes, together with informal study areas, academic offices and shared spaces.

Project >> A linear, top lit, triple height atrium is the building’s principal organising device, where a feature stair provides access from the reception at its base to the upper ground floor, where informal study booths overlook a landscaped courtyard, with accommodation on this level and the one above, arranged around it.

Primary teaching spaces are restricted to the lower ground floor, with large volume lecture theatres, set into the surrounding landscape to lessen their visual impact. The architectural response carefully knits the building into its sensitive landscaped setting and seeks to ensure a connectivity for its users with the surrounding mature woodland.

The external palette of materials is consciously restrained, combining red clay brick, bronze framed aluminium, floor to ceiling glazed screens and red cast stone, the latter used principally to delineate entrance colonnades, at the upper and lower entrances.

Internally within circulation spaces, exposed concrete soffits with floating ceiling rafts, board marked concrete walls, timber wall sheeting and terrazzo tiled floors, combine to create a calm, robust, and understated aesthetic.

A low energy, ecologically sensitive design approach was promoted from the outset, with a BREEAM Excellent standard achieved.

Measures adopted include a major geothermal heat system, with an adjoining field of piles driven to a depth of 125m to extract heat from the sandstone sub-strate and provide low level constant heat to the building, via an underfloor heating system.

This will result from a heat generation perspective, in a 10% reduction in lift cycle costs compared to a gas boiler installation and over 60% reduction in carbon emissions.

Record numbers of affordable homes completed in 2023 Figures released by the National House Building Council (NHBC), the UK’s largest provider of new home warranties and insurance, show 133,213 new homes were completed in 2023, down 12% on 2022 (151,308).

total of 45,649 new homes were completed in the rental and affordable sector, up 10% on 2022 and the highest figure ever recorded by NHBC. In contrast, private sector completions were down 20%.

Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC said: “Whilst there were considerable supply and demand pressures on the new homes market in 2023, it is very encouraging to see record numbers of new home completions in the affordable sector. Several major house builders have partnered with housing associations and Build to Rent providers, re-focusing parts of their output to help address the demand for affordable homes.

“The backdrop of high interest rates, significant inflationary pressures and challenges with planning consents has supressed private sale output in 2023.”

Looking to the year ahead, Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC adds: “With a general election looming, we may also see new home-buyer incentives that influence build volumes. In the mid to long-term, the industry would welcome measures that restore consumer confidence and encourage market growth.”

Arma metal pipe boxing - tough solutions from Encasement For social landlords, and their contractors, concealing exposed pipework presents a range of challenges as part of the ongoing property management and refurbishment procedures. The chosen boxing solutions not only need to be durable, easy to install and unobtrusive, but they must also be cost effective.

Access for routine inspection and maintenance can also be incorporated into the pipe boxing with the use of hinged metal doors or removable panels. In most cases the doors are specified with key locks for authorised access only, particularly where they are within easy reach, while removable access panels are usually secured with tamper proof security fixings.

Two fixing options are available for the ‘U’ shaped channel profiles with either an external flange or concealed angle bracket, both of which can be readily secured to external walls with suitable fixings.

hile most interior pipe casing and boxing projects can be resolved by using boxing manufactured from pre-formed plywood, with a pre-finished, wipe clean surface, where external pipework and services need to be concealed, standard plywood boxing is unsuitable and is not recommended for exterior applications, due to its lack of weather resistance.

In these applications, where pipework needs to be concealed from the elements, protected from damage, or both, Encasement’s Arma metal pipe boxing provides a tough and versatile solution that also improves aesthetics and adds a uniform finish to the project.

installations, and ground source loop arrays, the need for versatile and durable pipe protection is essential.

Retrofit heat networks typically require large quantities of lagged pipework to be secured to the exterior walls of properties, often rising several storeys on a residential block before the distribution pipework branches off to serve each flat.

For air source or ground source heat pump installations, the length of pipework required is usually considerably less than a large district heat network, but metal pipe boxing is used for precisely the same reasons - to conceal and protect pipework, which in most cases are located close to the ground and in easy reach.

Clearly, the location and routing of the pipework is dependent on the specifics of each project, so the pipe boxing also needs to be adaptable to meet these different project layouts. Other aspects, such as ease of installation and the choice of finish are also considerations when specifying metal pipe boxing.

Bespoke manufacture As Arma metal boxing is bespoke manufactured from strong, lightweight and corrosion resistant aluminium, to the dimensions and requirement of individual projects, this not only helps simplify the installation, but helps provide an integrated finish while also protecting the pipework from damage or tampering.

How a history of innovation has helped develop the roof membrane of the future Specifiers and contractors want practical solutions for delivering resilient, sustainable buildings designed with the future in mind. Considering the need for future-proofed solutions, Iain Fairnington,Technical Director at A. Proctor Group, explains how the next generation of air permeable roof membranes is set to help.

Pitched roof underlays are often described using the catch-all term ‘breather membranes’. The generic description doesn’t reflect the distinction between high-resistance (HR) and lowresistance (LR) membranes. And LR membranes themselves can be air tight or air permeable.

Water resistance of membranes in a changing climate When a roofing system is installed, there is an inevitable period of time where the underlay will be in place without a roof covering to protect it.The underlay might therefore have to bear the brunt of any inclement weather. Good practice will dictate that this period should however be kept to a minimum and a temporary cover used if rain is expected.

The NFRC’s Technical Bulletin TB06 describes how membranes should perform in terms of water resistance.

It says an underlay with “a water hold out over 1m when tested to BS EN 20811 will be adequate.”

As the frequency and intensity of extreme weather increases as a result of the changing climate, roof systems generally – and membranes as a specific part of those systems – need to be capable of withstanding more severe levels of rainfall.

An underlay’s ability to perform with a 1m head of water is a minimum level of performance to look for during product selection.

Selecting an air permeable LR underlay can mean that no vapour control layer (VCL) is required in the ceiling. It’s also unnecessary to ensure that ceilings are constructed as ‘well-sealed’, as described in BS 9250, however the ceiling should be convection tight. Moist air passes into the roof space and, in quick succession, to the outside air.

Proctor Air®: an air permeable LR membrane for the future With these competing challenges in mind, A. Proctor Group has developed a pitched roof underlay for the future: Proctor Air. Richard Bateman, Product Marketing Manager at RWC, explains that plumbing and heating systems have a key role to play here, elevating safety and performance at every point of use.

“There are more than 30,000 schools and academies in the UK, providing dedicated learning environments for more than 10 million pupils and employment for more than 600,000 teaching staff,” he said. “For each of these environments to be effective, it is essential for buildings to perform optimally – including their plumbing and heating systems.

“Essential to the smooth, safe and efficient running of schools, plumbing and heating systems must withstand high levels of usage every day, as well as perform reliably for years to come to maximise the stretched budgets of individual schools.

“To achieve this, specification is key, equipping educational establishments with systems they – and their pupils – can rely on.

“Health and safety should be a primary consideration when it comes to specifying systems for educational environments.

Accommodating users of all ages, schools should be acutely aware of protecting users from risks such as scalding, as well as diseases such as Legionnaires.

“To protect people at the point of use, Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) can be installed at each outlet, ensuring water temperatures do not exceed 46°C and, therefore, do not pose a scalding risk. To provide adequate performance and meet the required standards, it is essential that

TMV2-approved valves are used in education environments, unless the users are likely to be at a higher risk of scalding – such as those with disabilities or children of nursery age. In these environments, only TMV3approved valves should be installed.

“To protect users over the long-term, these valves should also be easy to access, supporting future maintenance and servicing.

As well as being tested at the time of installation, these valves also need to be tested at regular intervals to ensure effective operation. This interim testing should take place every six months for TMV3 valves, and every 12 months for TMV2 valves.

“Schools generally have larger hot water systems and user demand is constant, therefore, secondary circulating hot water systems are becoming more common to enable instant hot water at the outlets. It is essential to thermally balance this type of system to ensure optimum efficiency from the heat source, as unbalanced systems can create a host of problems, from inconsistent hot water availability through to creating environments for harmful bacteria to grow. Thermal Balancing Valves (TBVs) can negate

these challenges. Installed at various points across a system, they can safely provide a constant and stable supply of hot water and regulate the flow of water in line with temperature.

“Aside from risks such as scalding and backflow, specifiers should also adopt measures to prevent against backflow. Any building can experience backflow, where pressure fluctuations can move water in the opposite direction, subsequently contaminating the water supply. Schools are commonly defined as Fluid Category 4 and, as such, require the installation of Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) valves as standard to prevent backflow.”

Besides safety, the longevity and reliability of plumbing and heating systems is paramount for schools, enabling them to withstand heavy usage and remain functional for years to come.

Specifying for specialist teaching spaces With a diverse range of subjects taught in secondary schools, Dave Ford, Specification Manager at Altro, considers the key criteria when specifying flooring for specialist teaching spaces.

With a high level of slip resistance, staff and students are also safe from slips caused by water accidental spills.

The sound you don’t want to hear outside the music room, is the music being played. It’s a balancing act. An acoustic floor will reduce impact sound – footsteps within and below the rooms, chairs and other furniture being pulled across the floor. A good option here is Altro Serenade, an acoustic floor, reducing impact sound by 19dB. At 3.9mm thick it also provides welcome comfort underfoot to music teachers, who stand for much of the teaching day.

tandard secondary school classroom floors have to deal with a lot feet and furniture. In any secondary school there are many other specialist spaces with additional criteria to consider when looking at specifying floors or walls.

Art room floors contend with a lot of contaminants, such as chalk dust and muddy water from clay work. untingford First School is a school for around 330 children between the ages of three and nine, which opened for the 2023 autumn term. Built to Passivhaus standards by Morgan Sindall Construction for Hertfordshire County Council, the 1,643 sqm school includes a nursery and ten classrooms.

During construction 175 SuperPhon panels of varying sizes and colours were installed

SuperPhon provides up to Class ‘A’ acoustic performance and has a Noise Reduction Coefficient from 0.80 to 1.15 - an NRC of 0 indicating perfect reflection and an NRC of 1 indicating perfect absorption. The sound absorption coefficient is tested to BS EN ISO 354:2003.

Mapei provides eco-focused solution for at new Stephenson Building A Mapei resilient floor system has been used to complete a floor installation in Newcastle University’s Stephenson Building.

The surface project formed part of a £68.75m transformation of the original 1950s building into a modern hub for engineering research, education and knowledge exchange.

The Mapei specification provided a fast, safe installation and featured solvent-free, low odour formulations designed for high traffic environments.

The installation was completed by KJB Flooring for main contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland.

Flooring designs specified included Desso carpet tiles from Tarkett, Altro Orchestra cushioned flooring and Forbo Surestep safety flooring.

Prior to the flooring installations, the subfloor was prepared with Mapei Latexplan Trade – a low odour, protein-free levelling and smoothing compound with high compressive strength. Mapeproof ESM solvent-free and low-odour two-component pure epoxy resin, which provides a moisture barrier on cement-based substrates, was then applied along with ECO Prim T Plus universal acrylic primer – an EMICODE EC1 Plus and Blauer Engle certified formulation with very low VOC. Flooring was then installed using two Mapei products: all-in-one universal adhesive, Ultrabond ECO V4 Evolution and Ultrabond ECO Tack TX+, a solvent-free, non-staining acrylic-adhesive carpet tile tackifier.

New solution debuts on UK’s largest live entertainment arena Knauf insulation has launched FactoryClad Roll 35, a non-combustible glass mineral wool solution for built-up metal walls and roofs with the lowest embodied carbon of any equivalent 35 lambda mineral wool product on the UK market.

actoryClad Roll 35 was specifically developed to insulate the 12,000m² roof of the new Co-op Live arena in Manchester, one of Europe’s largest and most sustainable live entertainment arenas.

“Co-op Live is a project that places sustainability at its heart,” explained Liliya Luke, Glass Mineral Wool Product Manager at Knauf Insulation. “So it was essential our new FactoryClad Roll 35 not only delivered the required thermal efficiency but met the project’s sustainability requirements.”

“We know that the construction industry faces a monumental task in delivering on the country’s net zero target. FactoryClad Roll 35 not only ticks all the boxes in terms of thermal, fire safety and acoustic performance but it’s backed up by the sustainability credentials the industry needs, so we decided to roll it out to meet demand for sustainable insulation for commercial buildings.”

FactoryClad Roll 35 is non-combustible with the best Euroclass A1 reaction to fire classification. Because it is made of mineral wool, it also acts as a sound absorbent lining within built-up metal roofs, so will help control the reverberation of internal sound.

It comes in five thicknesses between 60

and 220mm and is manufactured at a width of 1,200mm for speed of fitting.

It also has a high tear strength which ensures its durability and ease of handling during installation.

FactoryClad Roll 35 is backed up by a wide range of sustainability credentials. It’s manufactured with ECOSE Technology, Knauf Insulation’s unique bio-based binder that contains no added phenol or formaldehyde and is 70% less energy-intensive to manufacture than traditional binders. Products made with ECOSE Technology generate low levels of dust and low VOCs and have been awarded the Eurofins Gold Certificate for Indoor Air Comfort.

All Knauf Insulation’s glass mineral wool is made using up to 80% recycled content, mainly bottles and jars collected from the local area. The company has also invested in

the most advanced compression packaging, which reduces handling, storage and transport emissions as well as the amount of plastic film used. In addition, the products are manufactured in the UK. Stora Enso >> Opening of wooden architectural landmark building Wisdome Stockholm is a new scientific experiential arena situated in the courtyard of Sweden’s National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm.

The Wisdome Stockholm building encompasses a wooden architectural design creating an arched-shaped room of 1,325 square meters. Stora Enso has been the main partner and delivered sustainable wooden construction materials for the project.

“Wisdome Stockholm is truly a landmark building that stretches the boundaries of wooden architecture. Wood as a building material is an important part of the solution to battle climate change, enabling storage of CO2 and a sustainable construction process.

Today’s inauguration showcases the unique design and sustainability benefits of building with renewable materials,” says Lars Völkel, Executive Vice President, Stora Enso’s Wood Products division.

Homes and buildings that are low carbon and have cheaper energy costs are a step closer thanks to a £5 million grant for a Welsh project.

Buildings – such as homes and offices - are responsible for 40% of all UK carbon emissions.

The project, called Switch to Net Zero Buildings, will enable buildings across south Wales to generate, store and release their own heat and electricity.

Crucially, buildings would be linked together in a regional energy system that is not only low carbon but also gives energy users more control.

The idea is to see ‘buildings as power stations’, an innovative design concept pioneered by Swansea University for both homes and nondomestic buildings.

The principle has already been shown to work, for example in the Active Buildings on Swansea University’s campus. This innovation ecosystem will also create strong local supply chains, boosting economic growth in the region.

The project is a consortium led by Swansea University with Cardiff University and University of South Wales, in partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council, Welsh Government, and Net Zero Industry Wales.

The SWITCH to Net Zero Buildings is one of ten projects to receive this award from the EPSRC, three of which involve Welsh collaborators. SWITCH is a wide collaborative network across academia, government and industry, coming together to support the region’s net zero ambitions.

The wood used for both the LVL (laminated veneer lumber) and CLT (cross-laminated timber) building elements for Wisdome Stockholm came from sustainably managed, certified forests in Sweden and Finland and stores in total 1,178 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The construction incorporates both curved and twisted beams, found in only a few locations worldwide. Situated at the heart of the exhibition hall is a substantial wooden dome equipped with state-of-the-art visualisation technology.

“Being a part of this project from the early stages, we were able to find an innovative way to use standard industrial products, such as CLT and LVL elements from our Sylva by Stora Enso range, to achieve the asymmetrical structure of the building without sacrificing the fantastic design,” says Jessika Szyber, Business Development Manager at Stora Enso.

2024 – The year to Specify sustainability Stuart Nicholson, roof systems director at Marley, offers his thoughts on some of the key specification considerations and trends for 2024.

O

ngoing high interest rates, low growth and a prolonged cost of living crisis is set to further constrain spending over the coming months.

On the back of the mandated changes to Part L of the Building Regulations which were introduced in 2022, the importance of sustainable design to help create the low carbon, energy efficient homes the Government wants and consumers are demanding at a time of high energy bills, will ensure that focus on renewable solutions will intensify further in 2024.

The continuing rise of solar PV installations on roofscapes – up 33% according the MCS data - is a central part of a rooftop revolution being powered by innovative, high performing and aesthetically pleasing integrated solar PV solutions.

The growth figures of solar is strong evidence that is it fast becoming a ‘go-to’ solution to help specifiers deliver energy efficient homes able to access the type of effective clean energy generation now demanded by many.

FHS – on the horizon In 2024, we will be on the cusp of the Future Homes Standard (FHS), a seismic change to the building regulatory landscape and which will become mandatory in just 12 months’ time.

Its aim is to ensure that new homes built from 2025 produce 75-80% less carbon

emissions than homes built under the current building regulations. Over the coming months we expect to see more details on the specification templates required to meet the new standard, and the market will be watching with much interest to see how it can remain compliant.

To help make the right sustainability decisions, specifiers will also need to rely more heavily on environmental product declarations (EPDs) to help assess and reduce the environmental impact of the buildings they are creating.

To this end, we expect to see more developers and specification teams extend their efforts towards better quantification of embodied carbon both for homes and buildings over the next twelve months.

To date this has been challenging as many product manufacturers still do not have the right EPD information to share with the market. But for those manufacturers such as Marley that now provide such essential information so that specifiers can make informed decisions about the products they select, the benefits are strong.

Hopefully, specifiers will be better served as more EPDs become available and sustainability ambitions can be underpinned.

Finally, because of changes to the Environment Act to enhance biodiversity net gain and which become mandatory for developments in England in 2024, we expect to see specification teams incorporate more sustainable and environmental plans to their design.

This could lead to increased use of green and blue roofs in scheme designs, as well as more wildlife friendly features in roof designs such as swift bricks of bat tiles.

CUPA 12 slate provides the perfect balance at new home CUPA 12 natural slate has been specified for the roof of a new family home, built in the garden of a historic Grade II listed Arts and Crafts property in North London.

T

he design team, from Levitate architecture and design studio, needed a way to respectfully reference the traditional architecture of the area without compromising the contemporary finish of the property.

CUPA 12 slate provided the perfect balance: being a natural and historically appropriate material that could also provide a clean aesthetic with a smooth, uniform finish. This – combined with the steep pitch of the roof, overhanging eaves and series of intersecting gables – helped to make the roof of the property a defining feature. This is consistent with traditional Arts and Crafts design – and gave a suitable nod to the Grade II property the new family home would be neighbouring.

In addition to satisfying the visual requirements of the project, CUPA 12 slate is also a BRE Global Certified product that provides a more sustainable solution than other contemporary roofing materials. CUPA PIZARRAS’ direct control over every stage of the slate production process - from quarry to roof - means that it can guarantee the quality of its product and trace it back to the source. This was beneficial in promoting a sustainable approach to the construction of a new property within a conservation area

as well as helping to guarantee the timely delivery of the natural slate.

Levitate has extensive experience working in conservation areas and on properties of historical significance. Architect Toby Knipping commented: “Site context was key to this project. We used a traditional palette of brick, wood and slate to reference the historic buildings in the surrounding area yet with a modern twist. We were very happy with the results and would definitely consider using CUPA PIZARRAS slate on other projects.”

longside its Advanced wall system, the Hereford-based manufacturer also supplied developer Acorn Property Group (Acorn) with prefabricated pitched roof cassettes helping to reduce time onsite.

“Through careful planning, our teams worked to ensure the scheme aligned with our ‘different by design’ ethos, complemented the surrounding area, whilst also making improvements to the public realm,” comments Dave Gittins, Construction Director, Acorn’s Bristol Region.

“Designed for modern living, the homes have been built with sustainability in mind, coupled with our usual high standards of construction detail and thoughtful interiors.”

Acorn appointed tried and trusted subcontractor, Taylor Lane Timber Frame for the quality of their workmanship and the speed and accuracy associated with timber frame construction.

Taylor Lane worked with main contractor, Halsall Construction to deliver all 113 properties. The task was particularly complex at the design stage and during construction as the project included some intricate and site-specific details.

Taylor Lane had to contend with a variety of substrates, building up from block and beam slabs, cast concrete slabs, and in some instances, over a steel frame for the underground carpark. Different tolerances and settlement issues had to be factored in.

Also, some of the properties were near existing dwellings so appropriate products and methods had to be used to ensure compliance, particularly with fire regulations.

The development includes a mix of two- and three-storey terraced houses and apartment blocks. Numerous roofs were designed to accommodate the different property types, including pitched truss, cut, and flat roofs. There is a complex fall design for the apartment roofs.

To ensure the development blends well with its surroundings some properties have parapets, a popular and traditional architectural feature in Bristol.

Offsite construction reduces build time Each of the 12 properties features a pitched roof with vaulted ceilings on the second floor.

Taylor Lane engineered these so that the insulated roof cassettes could be fabricated offsite at its factory in Herefordshire and

assembled onsite in around 10 days. This reduced the build time, minimised working at height and omitted the labour-intensive process of insulating between rafters onsite.

Factory-formed floor cassettes were made offsite to create roofs for the apartment blocks.

Taylor Lane then constructed the appropriate falls using decked cassettes and firring.

Where possible, the roofs were formed at floor or slab level and lifted to wall plate level to minimise the requirement for working at height. Even with restricted lay-down space, in some instances, the cassettes could be installed directly from the lorry bed to final position, such was the speed of installation.

Brooks Dye Works centres around the restored iconic chimney, with each property offering open plan, flexible living with parking and access to outside space. The former Brooks Laundry dates to the 19th century when the site was used for industrial units by Brooks Dyers and Cleaners.

The site is regenerated with young professionals and young families purchasing the properties.

“Material choices were of the highest standard resulting in two of the most eye catching high-rise buildings in Leeds. The Kalzip façade was chosen to provide a contrast to the brick, stone, and aluminium rainscreen elements on the project. It is universally acknowledged that these contracts create two aesthetically impressive buildings.

“The sheets were supplied in 12m lengths with joints at every third-floor level of the 56 metre high building. Installation tolerances were extremely tight due to the top section being curved and the product needing to align with glazing elements throughout the façade, and the system was incredibly accurate to meet these tolerances.”

Adrian Whitefoot, Technical Services Manager at Kalzip said: “The logistics and handling of the Kalzip sheets as they were long sheets fixing vertically, proved to be

challenge offering them up to the wall. We also had to consider the maintenance and cleaning of the windows and the façade had to be capable of abseiling down.

To overcome this challenge, hardrock insulation was introduced behind the Kalzip to support the system for when these works are carried out.”

The specification created by Dundee City Council Architects was to use materials to achieve high value performance and help achieve good airtightness. Robertson Construction Tayside appointed Robertson Timber Engineering as the timber frame manufacturer and supplier for the project.

Style repairs 7m high moveable wall A major conference centre in the North of England called the engineering maintenance team at Style to repair the 7-metre-high moveable wall that divides the cavernous space.

Manufactured in two sections, the damaged panels needed to be uncoupled to allow adjustments to be made to the internal mechanism, where acoustic integrity had been compromised, and then the engineers re-coupled the panels and fully tested the acoustic seals.

Style can support all types of moveable, folding and sliding walls, and is the only manufacturer-approved repairer for Dorma Huppe, Skyfold and SWG. All engineers are trained in risk assessment and are qualified to work safely at height. They are also PASMA, CHAS and ConstructionLine accredited.

Through its four offices, strategically located in the South, Midlands, North and Scotland, Style offers a UK-wide network of engineers who arrive in well-stocked vans, allowing many repairs to be carried out on the first visit.

Mapei protects new homes in historic building conversion A Mapei waterproofing membrane & watertight concrete system has been designed by LaintonServices, Stockport as part of a sympathetic conversion of a former medical Centre in Altrincham, Cheshire.

F

ollowing relocation of the centre, the character building has been transformed into new homes.

The Mapei system was installed within basement areas, by Lainton Services, with components supplied by Kestral Construction Products. The historic towncentre building is located in a conservation area, on the same site as the Grade II listed Church of St John the Evangelist which has also been converted. Dating back to the 1800’s, the building was originally used as a school, before being converted into a medical centre in the 1980’s.

The sensitive £4m redevelopment provides five high-end 3 and 4 bedroom homes, with basements and private gardens. Two Mapei pre & post applied HDPE (High Density Polyethylene Geomembrane) waterproof membranes were used to protect the

A single-component, cold liquidapplied polyurethane roof waterproofing membrane, Purtop Easy is used to protect roofs, balconies and terraces, making substrates completely waterproof even at low temperatures.

The BBA Certificate 23/7057 confirms that Purtop Easy achieves a classification of BROOF(t4) under BS EN 13501-5 : 2005 and it has a service life of at least 25 years.

During the BBA assessment process, the system was assessed as a waterproofing layer on pitched and flat roofs, with pedestrian and limited access, including green roofs and roof gardens, fulfilling all requirements.

Key factors tested included safety in case of fire, hygiene, health and the environment – including watertightness, resistance to mechanical damage, root penetration and slip resistance - and durability. It was also assessed for design, installation, workmanship maintenance and repair, as well manufacture, delivery and site handling.

The versatile membrane is resistant to standing water, root penetration, foot traffic, low and high temperatures (-40°c to +80°c) and UV rays. As well as BBA certification, Purtop Easy is CE marked and an ETAG 005 certified system.

Cathedral benefits from an UltraScape installation UltraScape have partnered with landscaping specialists Ground Control, to restore a cobbled driveway at the magnificent St Albans Cathedral.

he client was disappointed that the existing cobbles were lifting and moving under regular vehicular traffic.

Following thorough and detailed conversations between the client, Ground Control and UltraScape, it soon became clear that using BS 7533 compliant paving installation materials was the only way forward.

Comprising of eco-bed bedding mortar, proprime slurry primer and flowpoint flowable grout, Ground Control utilised UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system to relay the cobbles to create an exquisite, seamless finish.

To begin, UltraScape eco-bed was applied to the area to produce the ultimate foundation for the paving.

UltraScape eco-bed can be laid from 10mm – 100mm, is shrinkage compensated and can be opened to foot traffic after just 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of the installation quickly.

Solid hardwearing floor for new gallery Junckers’ solid wood flooring forms an integral part of the interior scheme at the new South Asia gallery at Manchester Museum.

Architects Purcell created a new two-storey extension which includes two new galleries, as well as re-designing the original buildings to add a new main entrance, foyer, and visitor facilities. The interior, designed by Studio C102 and Mobile Studio Architects, features Junckers Oak Natural Pearl flooring as part of a material palette of rich colours and textures.
