Hunter Douglas breathes new life into historic Leicester market area

A ceiling created and installed by world-leading architectural products manufacturer Hunter Douglas has helped to transform the historic market area in Leicester. Commissioned by architects Greig and Stephenson, Hunter Douglas supplied and installed a 470m2 solid wood linear open ceiling in fire-treated FSC Siberian larch for the technically complex £7 million glass and timber pavilion. The system was installed between specially engineered glulam beams and to achieve the desired reverberation time of 2-2.5 seconds, which provides the "buzz" of a market environment, the Hunter Douglas solid wood system was specified with 92mm wide Siberian Larch slats with 19mm gaps which were closed off with an acoustic felt strip.

As part of a £58 million investment in its residential campus, the University of East Anglia has unveiled its new Crome Court development, featuring a striking solar shading solution from Levolux

The solution comprised a colourful array of 63 Glass Fins, along with Aerofoil Fins and Ventilation Louvres to screen a roof plant area.

Aerofoil Fins have been incorporated horizontally, fixed into three vertical panels, to provide shade to a glazed entrance and corridor at ground floor level.

To complete the solution, Levolux utilised its popular Contour Ventilation Louvre system to form a ventilated screen.

To compliment their recently refurbished showroom, a new ‘high tech’ workshop has been constructed at Charles Hurst Ferrari dealership in Northern Ireland. The existing old concrete floor in the workshop was constructed in several slabs and therefore a high potential for movement existed. The floor required filling and levelling prior to the application of the new flexible surface finish. The system proposed by Remmers was a flexible 3mm visco elastic PUR resin system with a polyurethane seal coat. The seal coat has integral R11 slip rating and a high degree of chemical resistance.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems has incorporated the technology from their Comar 9P.i system into the Comar 5P.i window range, and are now launching the Comar 5P.i Advanced Casement and Tilt/Turn window system which integrates seamlessly into Comar 9P.i creating the option for standalone high performance windows. WALLTITE Spray Foam insulation from BASF has been specified to insulate a WWII Ferro concrete barge as part of its conversion into floating office space in Penryn, Cornwall. Originally, rigid PIR foam insulation was specified but at the application stage it soon became apparent that it would not entertain the roof’s jagged roof line and walls of varying depths. So the specification to was switched to WALLTITE at a thickness of 160mm.

No disruption during National Sperm Bank roof refurbishment with Decothane Ultra

The roof refurbishment of the National Sperm Bank in Birmingham was one of the most sensitive projects undertaken by contractor Rio Asphalt in recent years.

Completed last September to high acclaim, it was thanks to the specification of Sika Liquid Plastic’s new low odour liquid applied product, Decothane Ultra, that the works caused no disruption to the building’s vital facilities.

Due to its age, precautionary measures dictated a refurbishment was needed to protect the rooms in the building below from leaks. The shear amount of plant on the roof, and based on the initial roof survey, it was decided that the single ply was in a good enough condition for the overlay of a new product.

During the development of Decothane Ultra, the product itself was tested by Odournet, a team of independent consultants that develops, manages and delivers top level expertise on sensory analysis techniques and their application for product optimisation and material testing.

To deliver the 20 year guarantee and ensure the Sperm Bank roof would be sound for years to come, the works were inspected during progress by the Sika Liquid Plastics technical team, leading to a full 34 point Final Inspection Certificate sign off. The entire project was completed without disruption to essential services.

Bespoke Bilco NSHEV gives healthy prognosis for new Addenbrookes Hospital car park

A bespoke natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilator (NSHEV) manufactured by Bilco UK has been installed in a new nine-storey, multi-storey car park at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

The Bilco NSHEV, when opened, allows for the rapid evacuation of smoke and heat in the event of fire and additional passive ventilation for the building.

Hunter Douglas has launched a new sun control fabric that combines thermal performance with outstanding environmental properties. The groundbreaking PVC-free Screen Nature Ultimetal (SNU) is a distinctive design that is made from fibreglass and has a reflective aluminium layer, which delivers improved interior climate and reduces energy consumption. Screen Nature Ultimetal halves solar heat gain, significantly reducing the need for cooling capacity in the summer. The fabric is also fire safe (Class 0 compliant); odourless, due to the absence of softeners; and because of its extremely low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emission values, it is also Greenguard certified (Greenguard Certificate of Compliance Cert. no. 44878-420).

Building for the Future

The UK’s largest undercover coal yard and cash and carry has recently been constructed by SCM Construction using Ruukki Composite Panels to the roof and walls.

Situated near the Pennines in Halifax, West Yorkshire is a new and exciting energy distribution centre serving domestic and industrial customers with solid fuel, bottled gas and air products compressed gasses, seven days a week.

Future Proof Building

Ace Energy has been trading on the existing site for almost 20 years and decided to make the improvements to future proof the building and to offer a new way to store and distribute its fuel products. The owner wanted to create a legacy for his years in business that he could always be proud of and requested that the contractor SCM approached the project in the same way.

First Class Composite Panels

Two large warehouse facilities have been constructed giving extra capacity to store a total of 8500 tonnes of solid fuel on pallets and 1500 tonnes of loose coal in the undercover coal yard. Ruukki SP2D wall panels and SP2C roof panels were chosen by SCM because of their high quality and good looks, they are also very easy for the contractor to work with on site. SCM appreciated Ruukki’s interest in the project and efforts to ensure deliveries and requirements were met and that time schedules were adhered to. This level of detail helped deliver a superb project on time and to such a high level of execution.

Bespoke Solution

SCM who have over 20 years’ experience in the industry, were recommended to the

client. They designed the colour scheme and aesthetics that were bespoke for the client in order to achieve the exact look he was trying to attain. This project is the forth and largest SCM have constructed using Ruukki composite panels and more of similar developments are already in the pipeline.

Access Restrictions

All works were carried out around the day to day operations as the site remained operational throughout. However, there were access issues on this project, that to many people, appeared to be insurmountable. To the rear is a river and at the gable end permission to work on the neighbouring land was rejected. In these areas handling 12m panels safely and efficiently made many back away from the project. The solution was to install the panels from the inside of the building which was done expertly and without causing delays on site.

Complete Energy Efficiency

Not only is this building aesthetically pleasing on the eye but is energy efficient in itself and the benefits can also be passed on to the consumers. Due to the new construction customers can save up to 15% moisture content on solid fuel products and therefore receive extra volume of fuel on each purchase.

The development does not stop here, as plans are in place to install power points to recharge electric vehicles and are installing

200 kilowatts of solar panels on the industrial unit roof. The warehouse will be heated with biomass renewable and rain water is being harvested for reuse on site.

The coal depot has attracted much interest and has a waiting list of tenants ready to occupy the end units which have been created.

Belgian brick and pavers manufacturer, Vandersanden Group has supplied the facing bricks and pavers used to construct the recently opened Shakespearean Theatre in Gdansk. Morvan dark-grey facing bricks were chosen for the façade, to represent strength and durability. The textured brick envelope is intended to express values such as tradition and timelessness, while also contrasting with the masonry of the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, it provides a rich contrast with the smooth white surfaces of the theatre’s roof. The clay pavers laid around the building, as well as those used on the roof, were also fired in Vandersanden’s brick mills, and therefore have the exact same colour as the facing bricks. Vandersanden spacers ensure the bricks remain approximately three millimetres apart, helping them to remain in good condition for as long as possible.

Extensive refurbishment and redevelopment work at a library in the London Borough of Enfield has included the installation of four large, high performance rooflights from the Jet Cox range. The phased two-year programme of works centred on the Palmers Green library building is being led by Enfield’s Library and Museum Services department and is on course to be completed this autumn; with significant improvements being promised for users. The library actually stands alongside the now redundant Southgate Town Hall - which is being converted for residential use – while an annexe has also been demolished. Crittall’s stylish windows solution

A prestigious headquarters building has been created within the stylish Harley Street Conservation Area in central London with the help of Crittall Corporate W20 windows both inside and out. Architects Morrow+Lorraine, who have particular expertise in the London commercial office, residential and retail sectors, were engaged to refurbish the building converting it from D1 nonresidential use into a B2 self-contained Grade A office building. A layout was chosen that maximises the floor to ceiling height with clear open floor plans yielding some 150m2 on each of the four floors plus basement. The design provides for flexible space devoid of lobbies so as to aid free-flowing circulation. The Crittall Corporate W20 units were employed front and rear in the refurbishment and the front elevation at ground floor level was reconfigured to reflect the original drawings from the architectural practice Forbes & Tate who designed the building in 1926-27.

Plumis Automist facilitates conversion of Art Deco houses

Plumis Automist has been used to provide an innovative fire safety solution for the conversion of a stunning collection of Art Deco houses in Twickenham, midway between the River Thames and Twickenham stadium.

The architects, ABA Group of Sunbury on Thames, were keen to preserve the period features whilst achieving the contemporary design they envisaged. The eight 2-bedroom houses all comprised a large, open plan reception room opening onto a kitchen at ground floor level with two large double bedrooms on the first floor. The proposed designs provided no separation to protect the escape route.

ABA Group Ltd worked with the appointed Building Control officers to meet the fire safety requirements of the Building Regulations but they were very anxious that the solution did not compromise the high-specification open plan design of the apartments. They discovered Automist and called in Bracknellbased Vapourmist, the accredited installers for the system who provided a design and install service.

Automist gave ABA Group a number of active fire protection options to protect the escape routes and aid evacuation for a fraction of the cost of a traditional sprinkler system. Patrick Amos, ABA’s Director was pleased with Vapourmist’s recommendation. “Automist gave us complete design flexibility and was simple to install as it could be connected to the domestic water supply. Because it requires much less water than traditional sprinklers, there are great practical advantages in the event of a fire because run off would be minimised and the highspecification fixtures and fittings would not be in danger of being drenched as would be the case with sprinklers. We will definitely consider the use of Automist in similar designs in the future.”
