Initiative launched to advance worldwide sustainability in golf

The Scandinavian Turfgrass and Environment Research Foundation (STERF), The R&A, the United States Golf Association (USGA) have launched the International Turfgrass Research Initiative to further the advancement of sustainable approaches to golf course and turfgrass management.

The International Turfgrass Research Initiative is a legacy of the 14th International Turfgrass Research Conference (ITRC) hosted by STERF in collaboration with the International Turfgrass Society (ITS) in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2022.

Development and sustainability were the themes of the conference and STERF and ITS agreed that investing in international turfgrass research would be the most appropriate legacy from ITRC2022.

Beginning later this year, multiyear research projects will be

funded to develop practical solutions which can be adopted by those managing golf facilities and turfgrass areas, in response to the most pressing challenges facing the management of turfgrass and golf courses worldwide, including pest control, water conservation, preserving biodiversity and landscapes, and understanding the climate impact on turfgrass and golf landscapes.

Maria Strandberg, STERF Director and Past President of International Turfgrass Society, said, “For golf and other turf sports that use land and nature as their sports arena, the challenges are many and diverse, and will strongly affect future operations. New research, competence and modification of standard approaches in the golf and turf sports sector are needed to conquer these challenges.”

Daniel Lightfoot, Director –Sustainable Golf at The R&A,

said the initiative is an important step towards developing practical solutions that can be used by golf facilities worldwide to address the challenges being experienced in golf course and turfgrass management.

“We are aiming to positively influence standards and practice in sustainable agronomy through

providing guidance and support to golf facilities so that they are better equipped to manage the impact that climate change and change in legislation can have on the maintenance of courses,” he added.

A call for research proposals will be issued in May and submissions reviewed by a group

of researchers, practitioners and experts working in the field of golf course and turfgrass management. The successful applicants will be announced at the 15th International Turfgrass Research Conference being held in Japan next year.

Biggest wellbeing survey launches

Perennial, the charity dedicated to supporting people in horticulture, has launched its largest ever survey to gain a snapshot into the wellbeing of those working in the industry.

Building on the success of the 2021 Health & Wellbeing Survey, Perennial is calling upon all those working across all sectors to participate in the 2024 survey as their feedback really will make a difference.

The charity wants to understand more about people’s daily lives, both inside and outside of work, and the pressures they may be facing - not only to develop their

services but to inform others within the industry on the key issues and challenges being faced.

The anonymous survey will run until the end of June and is open to all sectors within horticulture. The results will be analysed and reported on by the University of Exeter and the findings shared with the industry this coming autumn.

By sharing the survey findings, Perennial aims to support and empower the industry to take proactive steps to address such identified challenges. While acknowledging that not all issues can be solved singlehandedly, Perennial believes

in adopting a collaborative approach and working in partnership with the horticulture sector for positive change.

Julia Hayne, Perennial’s Director of Services, emphasised the importance of sector collaboration, stating, “The research will enable us to formulate more effective tools and support strategies to enhance wellbeing now and into the future. It’s a further step towards achieving our vision of building better futures for people working in horticulture and their families.”

Welcome...

The General Election campaign is under way and all eyes are now focused on July 4 and what the political future holds for the country.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to call an early UK general election for Thursday 4 July during a rainsoaked speech outside 10 Downing Street caught many by surprise, including his own Cabinet and MPs.

With expectations of an autumn poll dashed, the wider industry hopes to see it as being one of the main themes of the upcoming campaign.

The opening shots of the campaign so far have been fairly predictable, despite the odd own goal, downright bizarre pronouncements and dubious photo-ops for the main players and local candidates alike.

But this is still a serious business and many trade bodies and membership organisations are keeping a close watch on campaigning, party manifestos and whether the parties are recognising the significant contribution the wider industry makes to the economy and to the daily lives of communities across the country.

In the meantime, that daily workload continues as normal and as summer arrives the challenges don’t end.

This month we take a look at the Play & Activity sector with our regular supplement.

There is an in-depth look at the 2 and 4-wheel tractor market from Jane Carley, as we cast a spotlight on the latest advances in the machinery world.

We focus on Sweepers, Blowers, Collectors and Vacs, alongside our regular round-up of the latest product launches and industry case studies from the various sectors.

Have a great month and despite your busy work schedules, do not forget to vote on July 4.

Eco-conscious evolution at Murrayfield

With over a decade of experience nurturing the hallowed grounds of the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium campus (SGM), Jim Dawson has recently embraced a significant change: the adoption of electric turf maintenance equipment, specifically the Dennis ES-860 cylinder mower, marking a shift away from traditional petrol-powered machinery.

The introduction of the Dennis ES-860 mowers represents a milestone in Murrayfield’s sustainability journey. After thorough demonstrations and evaluations, the ES-860’s robust features, including extended battery life and compatibility with existing G860 mower cassettes, emerged as compelling factors for Jim. The Dennis ES-860, a 34” battery-powered

turf management system, epitomises versatility and efficiency. Offering a range of 13 interchangeable cassette options for tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, and verticutting, it ensures optimal performance for day-to-day maintenance needs.

Powered by a 48V battery, the ES-860 boasts a quick 120-minute recharge time, eliminating concerns of range anxiety during prolonged use.

Jim highlights the integration of the ES-860 into Murrayfield’s operations: “The battery life is great – we can get the whole pitch cut on a single charge with no problem at all.”

Delays and uncertainty hamper post EU exit border ambitions

Government has repeatedly changed and deferred its plans for the introduction of full import controls following the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU). This has caused uncertainty for businesses and extra costs for government and ports, according to a new National Audit Office (NAO) report.

The UK’s exit from the EU resulted in changes to how goods and services are traded between the two territories.

Government is currently operating a partial import control regime after delaying the implementation of full controls five times since the end of the EU exit transition period on 31 December 2020.

Gareth Davies, head of the NAO, said: “The UK leaving the EU created a large-scale change in arrangements for the movement of goods across the border. However, more than three years after the end of the transition period, it is still not clear when full controls will be in place.

“The border strategy has ambitious plans to use technology and data to facilitate trade while managing risks. To achieve its objectives, government requires strong delivery and accountability – including a more realistic approach to digital transformation – together with effective monitoring to enable future improvements.”

Though post EU exit border processes (including the

introduction of full customs controls) have operated relatively smoothly, businesses trading goods between the UK and the EU have faced additional costs and administrative burdens.

Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), commented: “As the report highlights, the costs to the UK and businesses are huge, and too many questions about effectiveness remain. Those importing SPS goods, which for us are plants and plant products, have experienced massive hikes in costs and administrative burdens since January 2021, compounded by border changes in April 2024. This directly impacts the competitiveness of our sector and its ability to invest and grow.

“The report highlights our significant concerns over the ability of at-border checks to deliver biosecurity and the free flow of trade. As we set out in our letter to the Minister just a few days ago, our confidence in this is low. We need urgent engagement and action on both near-term fixes and longer-term solutions, such as an accessible trusted trader scheme or other easements.

“The report raises significant doubts over the ability to fulfil crucial aspects of a UK border –such as the Single Trade Window. The environmental horticulture sector imports £770 million of plants and plant products annually, with 90% of our growers importing plants at some stage of the growing cycle. Nearly 100% are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

and, in theory, subject to 100% checks and charges. We need a world-class border to ensure the environmental horticulture sector can thrive, given its substantial

contributions to the UK economy, employment, environment, health, and wellbeing.”

Major investment to battle climate change

Sport England has launched its first-ever environmental sustainability strategy, Every Move, which includes major new investment to help the sport and physical activity sector respond to climate change.

The package, worth more than £45 million of new National Lottery funding, builds on the already announced £80 million joint investment by us and government in the Swimming Pool Support Fund to make hundreds of swimming pools across the country more environmentally and financially sustainable.

The money will be used to help more people get active in nature, restore flooded sports pitches and help sports clubs become sustainable.

Chair, Chris Boardman, said:

“There is no doubt that our changing climate is already impacting our opportunities, motivation and ability to be active. Without change now, the government’s target to get 3.5 million more people active by 2030 is very much in jeopardy –and our children will be the ones to suffer most.”

GKB Machines launch new Combislit aerator

GKB Machines have announced the launch of the Combislit – a new, fast and effective solution to low-disruption aeration.

Available in 1.6m and 2.0m working widths, the Combislit uses GKB’s unique Evolvente blades to spike and open all types of natural and hybrid surface to depths of up to 15cm (6”).

The GKB Combislit allows for effective aeration of the top layer with minimal friction and disruption, ensuring optimal oxygen and moisture movement and linking up with deeper decompaction work conducted throughout the season. The successor to the popular GKB Topair, the Combislit combines solid and robust design with simplicity of operation making it a go-to for regular passes on all type of sports and fine turf

surfaces including fairways and greens.

GKB’s Evolvente blades are designed to pierce the ground without disturbing or prying the topsoil. The result is a level surface, boosted with the many, well-documented benefits of regular aeration and able to be back in play almost immediately.

The Combislit’s frame ensures sufficient weight to penetrate compacted upper layers, with the option to add additional weight to the top of the unit if required. A rear-mounted pressure roller can also be specified to deliver extra precision to the end result. In addition, the blades can be swapped for cutting discs for linear aeration and non-chemical weed control.

Green-tech helps create biophilic primary school

St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy in Derby suffered a devastating fire in October 2020, demolishing the site.

A new multi-million-pound school has now risen from the ashes to become the UK’s greenest school. St Mary’s is the country’s first biophilic school and has been built as part of a pilot project for the Department for Education (DfE).

Horizon Landscapes are Landscape and Grounds Maintenance Contractors based in Nottingham. As part of the landscape strategy, 100 new

trees were planted, many of which were semi-mature to help the school become quickly embedded in the Biophilic landscape. Additional landscape features include rain gardens, season bulb planting, green roof, and wildflower meadows to maximise biodiversity and local ecology.

For planting in the hard landscaped areas Green-tech supplied 128 TreeParker units, 40 tonnes of Green-tree Geosoil and 40 tonnes of Green-tree Subsoil. The TreeParker Cell System is an underground structural soil cell system that provides an

ideal environment for trees to thrive beneath the pavement in urban environments.

In addition to this key function, TreeParker aids stormwater management within the system, dealing with rainwater runoff at source - the ideal SuDS solution. Green-tech supplied 85 tree anchor systems for the installation of trees into the soft landscaping scheme. Greentech has a range of tree anchor systems designed to provide much-needed anchoring and stability for newly planted trees.

Landscaping preparation is easy with Ventrac

For landscaping contractors, the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor and its myriad of attachments is ideal for major projects where significant areas have to be cleared.

From the initial site preparation to the later stages of preparing the ground for planting or hard landscaping, Ventrac has an attachment that just makes the job easier.

If trees have been felled, then the Stump Grinder comes into its own, making quick work of the residual stumps, while logs, branches and rocks can be carried using the Loader, Rock Bucket or Log Grapple.

Once clear of obstructions the soil can prepared using the Tiller, Power Rake or Landscape Rake and then prepared for final planting with the Soil Cultivator,

which effectively buries rocks and stones before utilising the Primary Seeder, which plants any type of seed directly into the soil with a consistent and accurate drop rate.

Should you wish to lay power cables or irrigation pipe, then the Trencher can reach a depth up to metre, safely burying these utilities out of harm’s way. For more general tasks, there’s a Tough Cut deck for

clearing scrub, brambles and thickets, a Sod Cutter for lifting turf and an Edger for maintaining pristine driveways.

And once your site has matured, there’s a choice of nine different mowers for maintaining any grass surface from fine turf to rough scrub.

Reduce inputs, not quality, with Microclover from DLF

It’s fair to say that in many aspects of modern life we are encouraged to be mindful of the impact we have on the environment.

That’s certainly the case for most Turf Managers across the sporting spectrum, together with landscapers and those looking after green community spaces, some of whom face increasing pressure to operate more sustainably. Whether it’s for environmental reasons or a result of budget constraints, reducing fertiliser applications could be considered.

With Microclover from DLF, this can be achieved without a compromise on turf quality.

Microclover is a legume with the natural ability to fix nitrogen from the air. To capitalise on this benefit, DLF developed a unique small leaved variety, specifically

for use in professional grade lawns and surfaces. When sown alongside more traditional varieties, Microclover will contribute to a dense, uniform appearance and a harder-wearing, more drought-tolerant sward that stays greener for longer.

Its own natural fertiliser reserves feed the Microclover and the surrounding companion plants via root nodules that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a natural fertiliser, improving nutrient availability and reducing the risk of leeching. This process continues throughout the growing season until the first frost.

The competitiveness of Microclover is another benefit for less intensively managed areas, quickly filling gaps to lock out weeds and reduce the need for herbicides.

Microclover is incorporated into the PM26 and PM27 mixtures from DLF’s Masterline collection, these two formulations specifically developed to reduce input costs and be kinder to the environment by eliminating the need for excessive fertiliser, water and herbicides. Incorporating 5% Microclover, both PM26 Ecosward and PM27 Ecosward Plus offer lowmaintenance yet tolerant and

visually attractive swards, ideal for landscape applications.

Self-sustaining Microclover is just one of a number of sustainable seed developments borne from DLF’s global research and breeding programmes, seeking to meet the needs of today and those of the future.

Enriched biochar for thriving soil

As a landscaper, you know that environmental stresses are the single largest reason for trees, plants, and shrubs to die in their first year, and that healthy soil is the foundation of any successful planting project.

There is much talk about the benefits of using biochar in landscaping for improved water retention and soil decompaction, plus, the additional bonus of helping with climate change issues through carbon sequestration.

But did you know there are downsides to using just biochar? Plain biochar initially acts like a

sponge and locks up the nitrogen in the soil for up to a year, which will significantly restrict any growth. So Carbon Gold has a natural solution to counteract this. Their biochar products have been infused with natural biology and beneficial bacteria so that the enriched biochar product can get to work straight away.

If you want to take your landscaping projects to the next level, it’s time to explore the revolutionary benefits of enriched biochar. Carbon Gold, a Soil Association-approved company, has developed a range of enriched biochar products that offer unmatched additional

benefits to plain biocharincluding no nitrogen lockup, naturally improved total soil health, and increased organic disease resilience.

To ensure the healthy growth and development of trees, shrubs and plants use Carbon Gold’s enriched biochar products on projects to ensure optimal growth and flourishing.

Contact Carbon Gold on 0117 2440032 or email them at sales@ carbongold.com to learn more about how enriched biochar can benefit your landscaping projects.

GftK sustainable long-term repointing

Birchwood Business Park is owned by Warrington Borough Council, and it is one of the largest business parks in the Northwest, with many nationally important companies on the site.

The park layout uses an interconnected network of paved pathways and pedestrian areas, linking communal seating areas with planting zones and water features. These are predominantly paved with buttjointed, reconstituted granite stone blocks, together with some highlight areas of natural sandstone slabs.

The paving was originally laid as unbonded, flexible paving, meaning the granite blocks and sandstone slabs, were laid, bedded in sharp sand over compacted sub-base.

Several solutions were proposed and trialled, to find the most effective, durable, and costefficient solution, including one from NCC Streetscape, the paving jointing specialists, who J.M. & M. Scanlon found online, and invited to make recommendations.

These were to thoroughly clean the surfaces, completely remove any residual sand, plus built-up dirt, and weed growth from the joints, using highpressure jet-washing. Then to permanently fill the joints using wet-slurry techniques with GftK vdw 850+ Paving Jointing Mortar, and GftK vdw 815+ for areas with narrow joints < 5mm wide.

Postsaver celebrates 30 years in business

Two Gloucestershire brothers, who once appeared on Dragon’s Den to pitch their innovative product idea, are celebrating thirty years in business.

Founded in 1994, Postsaver has now sold more than ten million products to customers globally. Today, their innovative, duallayer barrier sleeve protection for wood, is widely known throughout the fencing and utility industries.

Richard George, CEO of Postsaver, remembers: “With my background in engineering, I’m constantly on the lookout for solutions. Postsaver was born from my own experience of fence posts failing at the ground line.

“Ever since we manufactured our very first sleeve, the product has been evolving

with improved solutions, better coatings and, only this year, we launched an extra-long Postsaver +PLUS product for use on structural timber.

“We’re proud of our achievements in the wood protection field and work closely with trade and industry bodies to promote the use of wood, as the most environmentally sustainable construction material, we’re rightly passionate about its future. As the environment becomes ever more important, our products bring significant benefits by increasing life and reducing environmental impact, allowing the continued use of wood in the face of growing competition from steel, plastic, composite and concrete alternatives.”

Following the launch of Postsaver for the fencing

industry in 1994, the product underwent rigorous independent testing from the BRE, which proved its effectiveness and enabled the team to offer a 20-year guarantee. This gave them the confidence to develop Polesaver, a more heavy-duty product for the utility sector. For Newfoundland Power in Canada, this meant their new Polesaver protected poles, are now expected to last at least three times longer than unprotected poles. The company now works with utilities globally, protecting millions of power poles.

Product development has always been at the fore for Postsaver and, as well as rot prevention products, the company now also offers anti-termite products, which prevent termite attacks, and fire

protection products, which can withstand multiple wildfires.

As the company enters its fourth decade it shows no signs of slowing down with its sights firmly set on growth across the pond. Richard continued: “To bring the benefits of ground line barrier technology to a wider audience we have recently expanded sales in the US and are in the final stages of developing our US online store, with this will come trade benefits for the fencing, decking, and structural timber market. Our company headquarters remain in Gloucestershire and we are still a family business but we’re evolving rapidly. 2024 looks set to be a record year for us and we’re very excited about what the future holds.”

Class’ high-performance, 2-part, all-weather, epoxy resin based paving joint mortars, which very effectively self-compact into the joints, with no additional tooling or finishing required. After allowing 24 hours to harden, the areas can be reopened to the residents – Job done!

Within the first year after the trials, it was already very clear that this was the best option and the ideal long-term solution, and since 2018, the specialist paving contractors, C.R. Services, have worked with J.M. & M. Scanlon to undertake refurbishment and repointing of all the paving in this way.

Now, some six years later, in May 2024, they have completed the refurbishment and repointing of the more than 8000 m2 of this paving, which was carried out in six annual phases, each with around 1,000 to 2,000 m2 completed.

Andre Holt recommended a completely new approach based around the installation of a Rain Bird ESP-RZXe irrigation controller to manage six 950 Series pop up rotor sprinklers, as well as a 10000 litre water tank complete with a Grundfos submersible pump and controller. With close cooperation between grounds staff and Holts Irrigation, the full installation was completed within a week.

Four of the 950 Series rotors with double nozzles and 90º arcs are positioned at the corners of the square and the other two at the side which have 180º arcs. They can throw to a distance of up to 28.0 metres providing head to

head 100% uniform coverage across the square.

The ESP-RZXe controller has a large LCD screen and a simple user interface. With its rapid programming feature it was simple for Andre to set up and is ideal for grounds staff to carry out additional manual functions. The controller offers many

washpad was agreed upon and, instead of a 5,000-litre standard system, one of ClearWater’s 10,000-litre capacity recycling systems with a four-hose washoff facility was agreed upon and an order was placed.

ClearWater’s Matthew Mears explained: “With sustainability being a major factor in business thoughts and multiple machine washing at one time, ClearWater’s 10,000 litre (2,640 gallon) capacity is more than adequate and also allows greater dwell-time for the biological treatment.” Minchinhampton chose a turnkey package quoted by Acumen ClearWater and all

work was carried out within a week schedule. The club takes their environmental responsibilities seriously and sustainability is a major concern, so a compliant washpad and water savings became a must. Adam Matthews said; “It’s great to ensure we are doing our bit for sustainability and efficient wash-off.”

The system is located adjacent to one of the fairways and, as ClearWater is a below ground system is most unobtrusive, just turret tops at ground level may be visible. There’s no noise either, all you will hear is the washwater jet leaving the water guns.

Also, the system recycles treated water with very little loss, as the dedicated washpad with it low curb surround is constructed in such a way as the waste wash water is discharged through grass traps and into the underground tank by gravity for treatment.

Washpad water recycling is the way forward for those in the turfcare maintenance sector and other business needing wash off. With water savings in excess of 90% possible, sustainability really does then become a meaningful word.

Two & Four Wheeled Tractors

Get a piece of the tractor action

Groundcare tractor innovation continues, with plenty of choice for all types of applications, and the emphasis on economy and versatility, reports Jane Carley.

The latest lower emission engines are paired with more comfortable cabs and plenty of capability to handle various implements, through more sophisticated hydraulics and pto control.

Kioti has introduced the new RX8040 series of tractors. Available either with ROPS or cabin the RX8040 is powered by Kioti’s 73hp four-cylinder stage V CRDI engine which gives high output with low noise and

fuel consumption compared to competitive models.

The spacious high visibility cabin has a new switch layout designed to make the controls easy to see and intuitive to use.

The three-point linkage with a max lift at the link arms of 2928kg is electronically controlled; remote switches on the rear wings of the tractor make hitching implements easy.

PTO speeds are 540 and 540E and the Kioti system features Auto PTO - the PTO is disengaged when the three-point linkage is raised, and engaged when lowered, plus PTO cruise which ensures that the required PTO speed is maintained even when the tractor is working hard underload. Kioti

The IQ dual-clutch F24/R24 gear box was chosen as it makes manoeuvring the tractor around the course whilst operating the equipment so easy. Another feature we really like is the Auto PTO function or the Headland Management System, it is brilliant for when we get to the end of the run with the aerator, we can lift the implement up, the PTO automatically cuts out, we can turn around then lower again and PTO restarts by itself. Brilliant for safety and avoiding damage or excess wear and tear on the implements themselves.”

Transmission is a Powershift box with the equivalent of 24 forward and reverse gears, including creep changes smoothly between forward and reverse, with a shuttle lever to the left of the steering column.

The RX8040 series also comes with a five-year 3000hr Kioti warranty.

The new Iseki TM4 compact tractor range comprises two models with either 21hp or 25hp diesel engines manufactured by Iseki in Japan. The engines are capable of running on both regular diesel and HVO fuel. Two transmissions are available either an F9/R9 mechanical or a simple to use three-range hydrostatic.

Mid and rear PTOs are standard, with the hydrostatic transmission model having a two-speed rear PTO – 540rpm and 750rpm.

The HST models also have a stationary PTO control at the rear plus a PTO control providing normal, soft and auto modes.

The latter is ideal when using a spreader as the PTO will stop when the tractor stops and start again when the tractor moves forward, so preventing material being wasted.

The category 1 rear linkage has a lift capacity of up to 900kg depending upon the model specified. Two rear mounted hydraulic services are standard on all models except the 21hp mechanical transmission which has one.

All models have tiltable steering and suspension seats for greater operator comfort.

A fully air-conditioned, factory fitted cab is available for the hydrostatic models. It has a very low overall height of only 2.03m or 2.08m depending upon the

tyres fitted and yet offers very easy access for the operator plus a spacious working environment. All cab models are additionally supplied with front and rear LED work lights, a heated rear screen, wiring etc for a radio and a loader joystick with mid-mounted hydraulic outlets. Iseki/MX front loaders, implements and a front hydraulic hitch.

The new Iseki TM4 range are light in weight, compact and manoeuvrable tractors with the power to operate mowers, smaller aeration equipment, other turf maintenance implements for grass, general tractor duties and snow clearance equipment.

Kubota’s new LXe-261 electric tractor is more widely available for this year, offered on a rental basis to gather customer feedback.

The LXe-261 is equipped with a large-capacity battery that can provide rapid one hour charging and three to four hours of continuous run-time. This means operators will be able to quickly charge the batteries during lunch and continue working in the afternoon for optimal efficiency.

The LXe-261 features an independent PTO, a HST transmission and multiple hydraulic outlets; it is also compact in size, making it wellsuited to a range of applications.

New Holland’s Boomer range is available in either a mechanical synchro or multi-range HST transmission, and creep is an option. All Boomers except for the Class 1 (Boomer 25) can be specified with a cab and engine horsepower from 25hp to 55hp from either a Yanmar or LSMitron three-cylinder engine.

All have a mid-mount PTO and mid-mount hydraulic

Class 2 and 3 ROPS units can be specified with a midmounted ROPS frame that will fold forward around the bonnet for easy access into small buildings or polytunnels or a foldable rear ROPS.

The three-model T4S range from 55-75hp has a quiet and spacious four-post cab, with three-cylinder turbocharged FPT engine, and a 12x12 40kph power shuttle transmission with 4WD as standard. Depending on the application the tractor can be specified with a horizontal exhaust, as opposed to the traditional A-pillar location.

The T4S has a 3 tonne lift capacity at the ball end and the linkage is operated via the Lift-O-Matic system. This tractor can be ordered directly from the factory with New Holland’s own loader, installed with integrated joystick and electronic third service.

All-round visibility for any task is offered by the cab, including a glazed roof panel to ensure unrivalled view of the loader at full height.

John Deere offers a diverse range of compact tractors for landscape and amenity use, with 13 models in six series spanning 25 to 65hp.

Among the most popular is the midchassis 3R Series compact tractor which features a three-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine with power ranging from 33 to 46hp.

It is equipped with the company’s automatic eHydro transmission which combines a three-range electronic hydrostatic unit with simple to use TwinTouch forward and reverse pedals. The 3R also has PowrReverser which allows clutchless hydraulic shifting between forward and reverse with a single lever. LoadMatch adjusts driving speed to the engine load for maximum performance, while MotionMatch manages the transmission response for adapted back-and-forth loading.

SpeedMatch sets a constant speed for tasks such as aeration and spraying. This, with the option to enable AutoTrac GPS steering, can deliver the ultimate in usability for operators.

A ComfortGard cab is available for the 3R with large, robust glass panels, an air-suspended seat, a high-performance air conditioning and heating system and easy to use hydraulic levers.

Overall tractor lift capacity at the rear linkage is 1148kg.

John Deere’s four-wheeldrive 4066R is equipped with a turbocharged 65hp fourcylinder diesel engine with diesel particulate filter (DPF), as well as an eHydro transmission, which comes with Twin Touch foot pedals for quick and easy operation, and a new intuitive control console.

The premium 4R spec comes with a host of features including the standard Air Ride seat, a convenient rear- mounted auxiliary hitch control, and an optional self-levelling Quik-Park

chassis consists of a front and rear carriage connected by a central joint. The front and rear three-point linkage system means a wide range of attachments can be mounted.”

Four steering modes, consisting of four-wheel steer, front, rear and crab, combined with permanent ground contact of

all four wheels through an oscillating front axle, give excellent slope capabilities, while also protecting the soil, using planetary final drives and low pressure tyres.

Electrohydraulic weight compensation increases slope capacity, giving more traction through weight transfer and

constant weight compensation for optimal ground following.

Richard continues: “Using the fourrange hydrostatic drive ensures a smooth start for protection of the turf, plus permanent power transmission for safety on slopes of up to 45deg, making the compact and comfortable Metrac range a versatile, efficient powerhouse for any job.”

The Reform specialist tractor range is more than just a bank tractor, says Richard Fairnie, sales manager for UK agent Simon Richard Ltd.

Bobcat roars into action

One of the first Bobcat compact tractors purchased in the UK is working hard on Meadow Farm in Laverton Village outside Ripon in North Yorkshire. Purchased by tthe Ball family, the new CT2540 compact tractor has joined new Bobcat E10z and E26 mini-excavators all from and supported by authorised Bobcat dealer, Bedale-based Grays Machinery Ltd.

Using the new Bobcat CT2540 compact tractor and miniexcavators, Stephen Ball and his father, Steve Ball have been carrying out extensive landscape restoration and redevelopment work at the farm. Stephen commented: “My sister who lives in the USA has a Bobcat compact tractor and she recommended that we buy one for tasks around the properties here. We have been very pleased with the performance of the new CT2540 - there’s plenty of work for a compact tractor to do, including maintaining the stables and arena for our horses.”

One of nine compact tractor models from Bobcat from 25 to 58hp, the CT2540 purchased by the Ball family has a hydrostatic transmission, comes standard with four-wheel drive and is equipped with turf tyres. It also has an autoPTO, mid-PTO and a front hitch, which are also standard on all models in the range.

The Balls’ CT2540 has the front-end loader option which has the Bob-Tach system as standard - this enables users to switch easily between different Bobcat attachments to carry out multiple jobs easily and was supplied with Bobcat bucket and pallet fork attachments.

Ventrac on course

Situated in wooded heathland 10 miles west of St Andrews in Fife, Ladybank Golf Club, is one of the latest prestigious Scottish golf clubs to purchase Ventrac equipment to assist in the maintenance of their challenging heathland championship course.

Designed by Old Tom Morris, Ladybank measures almost 6,800 yards from the championship tees, making great use of its heathland terrain and has changed little over the years.

Grant Frogley is the Course Manager and is responsible

for a team of eight full-time greenkeepers. During the winter of 2021-22, the club purchased a Ventrac 4500 all-terrain compact tractor and two attachments to help maintain the course.

“We had two rough mowers when I came in, each one for different areas of the course,” he explains.

“We’re a relatively flat site in terms of elevation, but we do have quite a lot of subtle movement with some extreme hollows and bumps. The rough mowers weren’t the best at following contours, so we found ourselves doing a lot more hand work.

“We’ve got the Contour deck and the Tough Cut deck. We use the Tough deck a lot during the winter to clean up the woodlands and remove the gorse and broom. We cut every blade of grass during the winter, so it’s very versatile and mobile for getting in amongst the trees. It’s very good at removing brash, gorse and broom.

“It came with a rear three-point linkage kit, which is brilliant. We bought a small sprayer with hand lance that hooks up on the back of it and we also have a terra rake, which we use a lot during winter projects, especially if we’ve got soil that just needs a tilth-up before we re-turf.”

“We’ve got a rear-mounted blower on a tractor, and perhaps it’s just my age, but I find looking out the back for a period of time is very uncomfortable. The seating position on the Ventrac is very comfortable and the outfront blower makes it much more user-friendly.”

Trilo M3 cleans up at Ombersley Golf Club

Over the 35 years that Andrew Halfpenny has been Course Manager at Ombersley Golf Club, things have changed dramatically – including the site itself, where the 18 hole parkland

With mulching no longer providing a viable solution, the

Windstorm impresses at club

North Hants Golf Club has taken delivery of the SCAG Windstorm debris blower from STM Co Ltd.

The stand-on, zero-turn machine has a 37HP motor, 10mph ground speed and a colossal output of 600cfm.

The Windstorm’s performance has gone beyond expectations and secured an immediate saving.

The visibility and zero-turn manoeuvrability are real benefits and the Windstorm has so much

power it can cope with clearing leaves within heather areas.

It is not only winter debris season where it succeeds, routine mowing can leave grass cuttings on the surfaces and the North Hants greenkeeping team have used the Windstorm to clear this away to keep the fairways pristine.

The machines are available through the STM dealership network.

team took delivery of a Trilo M3 vacuum collector in October 2023, which has proved more than capable of keeping the course clean and tidy over a busy autumn and winter season.

Andrew has clocked up an impressive 47 years with the company, and currently leads the maintenance of the Worcestershire course supported by a team of five. “Leaves weren’t really too much of a problem traditionally, but as the course has matured, mulching them with a mower became unfeasible time-wise and playability-wise for the golfers” he explains. “We’ve established a fantastic relationship over the years with Tallis Amos Group so approached them to see what they could recommend to collect the leaves. They brought us the Trilo M3, we gave it a thorough test and we bought it – simple as that!”

The M3 Multipurpose from Trilo is capable of a range of operations including scarification, cut and collection and debris clearance depending on the attachment equipped. The 1.5m working width and 3m3 hopper capacity makes it compact yet capable of year-round maintenance tasks in a variety of golf and sports turf applications.

“It was delivered in October and was out on a weekly basis. It coped brilliantly with both the volume of leaves we had and the very wet ground. The wanderhose is a brilliant feature, great for manoeuvring around hedgerows and clearing leaves and other litter around perimeter and fence lines. We used the vacuum in conjunction with our blower, quickly removing everything we wanted to and leaving a really clean finish.” Andrew

continues, “The players noticed the difference and loved it!”

While the M3 was predominately purchased for leaf clearance Andrew foresees that, with the climatic changes he has observed during his tenure, it will find other uses. “We see more rain, and notably more wind, which blows litter and tree-debris around the course. The M3 is our new go-to machine for keeping the course tidy.”

Top-Brush proves transformational

Initially purchased to overcome conditions described as a ‘worm cast factory’, a Redexim TopBrush is proving to be a true multi-tasker for the team at Malton & Norton Golf Club.

Head Greenkeeper Richard Jacques admits that prior to the purchase, the club underestimated how fundamental the 6m wide brush would become to the maintenance, with it successfully removing organic matter, improving cut quality and boosting presentation in twice weekly passes around the 27-hole complex.

“We had no idea until we had it in the shed, how many uses we would find for the Top-

Brush around the maintenance calendar,” he said. “On top of dispersing worm casts, its out twice a week between March and October to stand the plant up on the fairways, improving the quality of cut and enhancing definition. There aren’t many pieces of equipment you get that can transform turf density and quality as much as this one has in such a short period of time.”

At 6m wide, the Top-Brush is a highly productive maintenance solution. As well as changing brush direction, working depth can also be adjusted, making it a versatile tool for a light surface brush – suitable for clearing dew, incorporating topdressing material or removing clippings

The UB003C 36V Blower combines comfort and functionality with a highperformance brushless motor and battery system to deliver a maximum air velocity of 86m/s and long run times, making it the perfect companion for grounds maintenance professionals.

Lightweight and comfortable to use, the new UB003C offers an average blowing force of 24N, a maximum air volume 17.6m3 per second, and air velocity up to 86m per second. For clearing large areas, this machine can provide a continuous run time of up to 60 minutes from a single charge. This is made possible by attaching Makita’s backpack battery system to the machine, for all-day work and performance without the

hassle of using petrol or power cables. Specifically, rather than conventional batteries, the UB003C can either be connected to either the PDC1200 (33.5Ah) or PDC1500 (43.5Ah) Portable Power Packs as part of the manufacturer’s ConnectX system, or to Makita’s PDC01 battery backpack (all sold separately).

The UB003C blower features a 3-stage telescopic nozzle with

- or a deeper, more aggressive surface agitation to effectively rid large areas of organic matter.

“Having used the Top-Brush for over a year, we’re now in a position of managing worm casts preventatively – by reducing OM and improving density – resulting in fewer instances, which is a big positive,” Richard continues.

“That’s on top of hugely elevating the turf quality and appearance, not just on fairways but also approaches and semirough which is giving us a better product in the summer and one that’s more resilient to host play going into the winter months.”

Sweeping success with SISIS at Merchiston Castle School

Stuart Chalmers, Head Groundsman at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, has recently elevated his maintenance procedures with the addition of the SISIS Litamina 1200.

This innovative tractormounted sweeper is helping to enhance the upkeep of Scotland’s only all-boys independent boarding school.

Merchiston Castle School boasts a rich tapestry of sporting facilities, including rugby, football, hockey, cricket, tennis, and a golf academy. Spanning just under 100 acres, the school’s grounds present a diverse array of maintenance challenges throughout the year. Stuart, who has climbed the ranks since joining the school in 2012, understands the importance of using robust equipment to meet

“As a school, we’ve long relied on SISIS equipment,” remarks Stuart. “Their machines were here when I first started, and they’ve proven their longevity over the years. We’re constantly striving to make improvements, and SISIS equipment aligns perfectly with our ethos.”

The Litamina 1200, a highly popular model in the SISIS range, has earned Stuart’s praise. “We had an older Litamina 1200 that served us well for over 10 years,” he explains. “When the time came to replace it, there was no question—we opted for the same machine. It’s simply that good.”

With its spiral-designed brush and galvanised collection hopper, the Litamina 1200 excels in collecting a wide range of debris while delicately following ground contours.

features of the new model, including stands for convenient storage and enhanced practicality and ease of use.

“The Litamina 1200 has become indispensable in our maintenance routine,” says Stuart. “Primarily used on our rugby and football pitches, it not only cleans the surface but also helps rejuvenate the grass, allowing for better air circulation and preparing the turf for our mowing programme.”

Stuart outlines the meticulous scheduling of maintenance tasks, which often includes alternating the use of the Litamina 1200 with other SISIS equipment such as the Maxislit, a tractormounted deep slitting lawn aerator. “We utilise the Litamina for leaf collection as well, demonstrating its versatility and efficiency,” he adds.

Ewen Wilson, Sales Manager for Scotland at SISIS, also receives praise from Stuart for his excellent service. “The support we receive from Ewen is first-class. It’s reassuring to know that we have a reliable partner in SISIS.”

As Merchiston Castle School prepares for exciting expansions, including a new nursery school and junior school, Stuart remains committed to maintaining pristine grounds. With the SISIS Litamina 1200 at his disposal, Stuart and his team continue to raise the bar, ensuring that the school’s sporting facilities remain a source of pride for years to come.

grass,

or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride. And it’s that flexibility that sets the Profihopper apart from the crowd.

The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. To add to that versatility, the sward is rolled after cutting and scarifying comes as standard.

The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.

Don’t compromise - choose the machine that comes with more compaction built-in for maximum work rates and less emptying.

A ‘reverse’ nozzle attachment for trailed versions of the Whisper Twister blower will soon be available to order from Wiedenmann UK dealers.

The new ‘J’ shaped nozzle specifically targets residue debris or leaves underneath the machine.

Now the operator no longer needs to make a second trip to tidy up any ‘mini’ trail of debris left behind under the tractor.

By positioning the nozzle at the side of a verge or roadway and

pointing below ‘the body’ of the blower, the directional nozzle ensures that the entire width of a path is cleared of leaves or debris in a single pass.

This new time-saving option can be fitted retrospectively and easily to existing Whisper Twister blowers. The standard straight nozzle can be converted in just a few simple steps.

The Whisper Twister has an impressive 180° degrees of

swivel and an enormous air output of 200 m³ /min at 50 m/sec.

It takes its name from Wiedenmann’s super-quiet patented whisper turbine system allowing operation outside residential areas, school and hospital grounds without adding noise. It fits compact tractors 25 hp and above via standard three-point linkage (Cat. I) via PTO or hydraulics.

Ventrac has two blower attachments and a Leaf Plow for the Ventrac 4520 compact tractor, that really come into their own during the autumn and winter months

The Ventrac KA160 Power Blower features a vertical shaft design that delivers a powerful, yet quiet performance. The blower generates a forced air speed of 290 k/mh (180 mph) and can be used to remove leaves, light snow, water and other debris.

The Ventrac ET202 Turbine blower makes quick work of any clean up job and is designed to move large volumes of air, and much quieter than conventional leaf blowers. The ET200 can be used to blow leaves, light snow, and remove debris from paths, car parks and other areas.

The Ventrac Mount System allows the blowers to mounted and detached quickly and then move on to the next job.

The EF300 Leaf Plow is designed to save users hours of painstaking leaf clean-up. It features a brush with dual bristles allowing for a clean sweep without gouging the turf. With a height of 1.27 m (50”) and an overall width of 1.98 m (78”), it collects a high volume of leaves in one pass.

The flexible containment wings allow operation close to trees and other objects without worrying about damage to property or the attachment.

The Leaf Plow can mount on the front of the tractor for optimal visibility and manoeuvrability, but can also be mounted on the 3-point hitch at the rear of the tractor, allowing the use of a high-powered blower on the front PTO, making this the most efficient leaf removal combination ever.
