Welcome Leading merchants and distributors have stepped up to support the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) and committed to raise standards in the industry. Belgrade Insulations Ltd, CCF Ltd (part of the Travis Perkins Group), Quantum Insulation Ltd, SIG Trading Ltd and VJ Technology Ltd are the first merchants and distributors to commit to assessment against the CCPI and are therefore playing an essential role in driving much needed change across the sector. A 4-clause version of the CCPI has been specifically designed and targeted for merchants, distributors and wholesalers. This has been achieved with the support of the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) and its members through their regional groups, the Construction Products Association (CPA – which is also the organisation credited as the founder of the CCPI), the Electrical Distributors Association (EDA) and the NMBS. Dame Judith Hackitt, author of the Building a Safer Future Review and Chair of the Industry Safety Steering Group said, “I am delighted to see Merchants and Distributors signing up to this. This will have a significant impact on the behaviour of the whole supply chain. Well done to these early adopters.” Amanda Long, Chief Executive of CPI Ltd, the not-for-profit independently-run organisation set-up to manage the CCPI

said: “It is great to see the first merchants and distributors adopt and commit to the CCPI. In adopting the principles of the Code, merchants and distributors are supporting the construction industry’s need for greater accuracy and clarity in terms of the product information being supplied upon which installation decisions are based. This is critical as so often they are reproducing and managing construction product information. Watch this space for further CCPI merchants and distributors announcements to come.” The CCPI Merchants and Distributors assessment means that the organisation will be assessed to have the necessary product information processes and systems in place to uphold the Code, and will adhere to the clauses diligently whilst proactively promoting and supporting the adoption of the Code with their suppliers.

CUPA PIZARRAS

Zoo Hardware

CUPA R12 Excellence from CUPA PIZARRAS has been installed as part of an extensive family home refurbishment project in rural Norfolk. Working closely with the property owner, contractor Aspect Group Services specified the natural Spanish slate as it offers outstanding aesthetics, quality and a guaranteed warranty of 100 years. CUPA R12 is a high-quality, dark grey slate with thin laminations and a smooth surface. Being a high-quality natural slate product, it has a guaranteed lifespan of 100 years and requires minimal maintenance. The slate provides a smooth, uniform appearance which was important for this refurbishment. In addition, CUPA 12 natural slate provides a sustainable solution, which was a significant factor for both the homeowner and Aspect Group Services.

Zoo Hardware has launched a new range of flush hinges that can be installed up to three times faster than traditional butt hinges. The new ZHSSFH-243 series uses a concept commonly used with cupboard or cabinet doors, otherwise known as an interleaf hinge, to offer a unique flush design for full size internal residential door sets. The design removes the need for morticing into a door leaf or frame with a more traditional butt hinge, whilst also eliminating the need for intumescent material, if the hinge is being fitted to a fire rated door. Successfully tested in accordance with the requirements of BS EN 1935:2002 grade 11, the ZHSSFH-243 series is CE and UKCA marked.

Mapei

Häfele

A comprehensive Mapei system – including structural repair and waterproofing products - has been used to renovate the historic Lido at Northcroft Leisure Centre in Newbury. Investigation works and preparation of the concrete repair specification were carried out by KRP Consulting Engineers for West Berkshire Council; the new facility features a 50-metre Olympic length heated outdoor pool, interactive splash pool and additional changing cubicles with accessible features. Mapei products were supplied by Resapol, with works carried out by Structural Renovations on behalf of Main Contractor, Universal Civils & Build. The high performance Mapei specification included products to repair and stabilise the concrete foundation of the lido and to create a new waterproof and watertight surface.

Häfele, manufacturer and distributor of fixtures, fittings, architectural hardware and access control to the specification space, is relaunching two of its CPDs following reaccreditation from RIBA. Currently in the process of refreshing its CPDs for the projects market, Häfele’s modules on ‘Defining Electronic Access Controls’ and ‘Specifying Door Ironmongery’ are now available for delivery. The ‘Defining Electronic Access Controls’ CPD explores the history of access control systems, the elements that make up modern-day systems and how to correctly specify them. The ‘Specifying Door Ironmongery’ CPD examines the hardware solutions used to manually operate, lock, close and protect doors on projects, and explores relevant legislation and regulations surrounding door hardware, providing real-world examples of common specification requirements.

Senior Architectural Systems

Mapei

Senior Architectural Systems’ vast experience in the education sector has led to three of its leading aluminium systems being used as part of the modernisation of a secondary school and sixth form college in Stockon-On Tees. Senior collaborated with architects Howarth Litchfield to design and supply suitable aluminium windows, doors and curtain walls. The fenestration package was fabricated and installed by specialist contractor Frostree for Kier Construction. Framing the building’s modern exterior is Senior’s SPW600 aluminium window range. Senior’s popular SF52 aluminium curtain wall system was used for the scheme, offering specifiers a variety of aesthetic options as well as an enhanced thermal performance that exceeds current building regulations. The scheme also incorporated Senior’s SPW501 aluminium door range.

Mapei mortars, coatings and paints have been used to complete a façade repair project at Q West – a serviced office and studio complex close to Heathrow airport. During the repair phase, Mapefer 1K anti-corrosion cementitious mortar was applied over steel reinforcement rods. Two shrinkage compensated repair mortars were specified to repair and smooth surfaces: Mapemortar HB R3 and rapid-setting Planitop Smooth & Repair R4 - followed by application of Elastocolor Paint. Malech – a water-based acrylic undercoat and bonded primer - was then applied to create a smooth finish. Repair of the Asphalt surface was carried out using Purtop Easy coloured waterproof polyurethane resin and Mapeflex MS45 – a painted hybrid sealant and adhesive used to seal and bond the surface.

Manthorpe

Howells Patent Glazing

With the introduction of the Future Buildings Standard policy and changes to Parts L and F of UK Building Regulations, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are an increasingly attractive option for heating new builds. With major housebuilders already installing ASHPs Manthorpe has developed the GRS-DUO-15 a Twin Plate Radiator Pipe Guide and Seal. Designed specifically for 15mm pipes, it is specifically tailored to meet the needs of both the first and second fix plumbing phases. The new GRSDUO-15 adds another layer to the unseen work that Radiator Pipe Guides and Seals do within the construction of a home; offering improved positioning and fixing versatility along with a more robust seal to further ensure that air leakage behind every radiator is eliminated.

Howells Patent Glazing has supplied and installed new glazed roof products for Blossomfield Park, an exclusive development of one, two, and three bedroom apartments. The development is made up of contemporary new buildings and a thoughtful conversion of the Grade II listed Tudor Grange with outbuildings. Using its 40mm HG2 glazing bar, Howells replaced the old steel lead clothed glazing bars and single glazed Georgian wired cast glass in three areas of the Grange. Elsewhere, a daylighting solution was also required for the new buildings. For this, Howells used its 57mm self-supporting ridge glazing system in Anthracite Grey, plus two pairs of automatic opening smoke vents. Two internal glazed gable windows were also supplied.

Product Highlights Sto streamlines construction at Blar Mor A Sto rainscreen cladding system has provided an alternative construction method for the new Blar Mor housing development, generating time and cost efficiencies. The main contractor partnered with AFS (Scotland), a leading provider of external façade solutions, to deliver a durable cladding system for timber frame homes, removing the requirement for traditional construction. Sto reviewed wind load information and provided a Sto fixing assessment to assist AFS in the installation of the StoVentec system. Comprising StoVentec carrier boards, these were installed on the timber battens to create a ventilated cavity. Made from 96% recycled expanded glass granulate, the carrier boards are reinforced on both sides with glass fibre mesh. StoVentec boards don’t expand or contract with temperature change, providing a stable board to receive the render build up, and they can also be butt jointed with no risk of cracking. The next stage of the installation process was to apply a layer of StoArmat Classic Plus, a cement-free base coat, embedded with Sto-Glass Fibre reinforcing mesh to the exterior of the StoVentec boards. The final façade finish was completed with StoSilco K1.5, a silicone resin render in white, which provides high levels of water repellence, protection against harsh weather conditions and ENQUIRY 10 excellent water vapour permeability.

New housing tie design unveiled

The new shape is designed to address applications where there is no drip in the clear cavity. Historically this would have required a specific offset drip tie which, if installed the wrong way round, would mean the wall still has no drip in the clear cavity. The new VE4 has been created in such a way so that it can still be installed either way round without diminishing performance and ensuring it cannot be installed incorrectly. In addition to working in situations where there is no drip in the clear cavity the new Vista VE4 can be used in standard cavities.

CCPI Verification helps specifiers to make informed choices Marley’s JB Red Batten has become one of the first construction products to achieve verification with the new Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI). Developed following the Hackett review into building regulations and fire safety, the CCPI is backed with industry support, and aims to change the way construction product manufacturers manage and provide information on products. As the

Kemper System

Fassa has gifted colour matching tint machines to 11 distribution centres over the past few years, with the latest being installed at Independent Site Supplies in the Northwest. These state-of-theart machines can match Fassa products to specific colour needs quickly and efficiently, allowing distributors the opportunity to answer the growing needs of customers. Both the Fassatherm and Fassarend systems are already available in an impressive 365 colours as standard, but through tinting technology, distributors can match renders to existing RAL shades and other system colours in store. Chris Conway MBE, Sales Manager at ISS comments: “We’re both excited and honoured to have one of the Fassa tint machines. It’s a great bit of machinery and is going to change the render game in our area for sure.”

The popularity for PMMA liquid waterproofing solutions – (Polymethyl Methacrylate) – has grown in recent years, but the technology isn’t a new concept. Victoria Ramwell, commercial manager at cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, explains that as well as quick curing, PMMA is durable, flexible and hard wearing. The cold-applied liquid resin cures rapidly even at temperatures around 0°C or lower, and is installed wet-on-wet. This means the polyester reinforcing fleece is first saturated with liquid resin, bonding the membrane to the substrate, with the surface layer then applied onto the bonding coat whilst still wet – therefore forming a single, seamless membrane of uniform thickness. PMMA is tough and robust, and can provide a sound waterproofing solution for decades.

Keylite Roof Windows

IG Masonry Support

Expert Trades, a construction-based marketing consultancy in the Midlands, took on its very first property renovation project and teamed up with Keylite Roof Windows. In the master bedroom of the house, where the ceiling was particularly low, the team decided to incorporate roof windows in order to invite natural daylight into the room. Four Keylite windows have been installed. As with any old building, it was important to ensure its thermal efficiency. A whole new heating system was installed, whilst other aspects of the renovation were implemented to minimise heat loss. The Keylite roof windows include an Integrated Expanding Thermal Collar as standard, which minimises any heat escaping around the windows, making the space far more thermally efficient.

IG Masonry Support supplied 65m of mechanically-fixed B.O.S.S.+, the ideal brick-slip soffit solution, to two blocks of buildings that form part of the ambitious £500m Ashley Road West project in North London. IG Masonry Support’s established relationship with the client, Grangewood Brickwork Services Ltd, along with its ability to innovate brick-soffit systems to suit a range of applications, cemented the company’s selection for this high-profile project. The bespoke nature of IG Masonry Support’s solution included the supply of angled bricks within a mechanically-fixed B.O.S.S.+ system. The intricate angled cuts, designed and manufactured by IG Masonry Support as part of the B.O.S.S.+ brick-slip soffit system, were slim and triangular. The unusual pattern was necessary to adapt to the building’s unsquared shape.

Hunter Douglas Architectural

Mapei

Hunter Douglas Architectural has introduced HeartFelt® Groove, an addition to the renowned HeartFelt® ceiling collection, which features slim felt panels, offering unparalleled acoustic and visual properties that redefine the possibilities of interior design. At the heart of HeartFelt® Groove is a new type of panel that promises to revolutionise how we think about ceilings. This boxshaped, 60mm by 50mm panel is installed with a module of 80mm, creating a gap of 20mm between panels. Previous panels were largely variations of the box-shaped design (a ‘U-form’), but HeartFelt® Groove takes a bold step by introducing a ‘W-form’. This two-fold deformation of the felt strip creates a ‘form within a form’, setting a unique standard in the linear ceiling market.

Mapei has introduced Mapecontact Plus – a new solvent-free, double-sided reinforced adhesive strip for fast-track installation of accessories, resilient and textile flooring. New Mapecontact Plus provides an instant bond and a secure, tough hold, eliminating waiting time. It is ideal for installing textile and resilient flooring onto steps and curved surfaces, and accessories including coving, skirting boards, rubber and PVC profiles. It can also be used to install angular pieces and protective profiles onto steps and other sharp edges. As well as providing a fast, sustainable and clean installation, Mapecontact Plus has improved resistance to moisture, plasticisers and ageing, for greater longevity. Mapecontact Plus is ready-to-use and available in 25mm, 40mm and 85mm widths. It is certified Emicode ECI Plus by GEV.

Kentec Electronics

Two large internal glass screens which balance aesthetics with assured fire protection have been created using Promat SYSTEMGLAS® F1 within a new multi-million pound facility to support the day-to-day operations of a major UK airline. The twin 6m wide by 2m high glass screens feature inside the purpose-built 150,000 sq. ft ‘retail operations centre’ in Cheshire. Visibility and connection between the office spaces and the main warehouse and logistics zones has been maximised through the installation of two large, slim-framed fire resistant glazing screens, each formed of five panes. These were manufactured using the Promat SYSTEMGLAS® F1 Ferro steel-framed glazing system following the architect’s specification, and installed by leading glazing contractor MD Glass Partitions.

Kentec Electronics has announced the largest wireless installation to date across 37 high-rise towers owned and operated by Solihull Community Housing, providing residents with reliable, early warning fire detection and alarms. Working closely with the West Midlands Fire Service, installer Early Birds Fire Protection specified Kentec’s K-Mesh system both for its reliability and practicality. Some 2,000 apartments needed protecting across a five-mile radius. The system comprises some 4,000 sensors linked to a combination of Kentec’s award-winning Taktis panels and Syncro AS analogue control panels, which are linked to an alarm monitoring station. Fire services and incident commanders are given an immediate view of exactly where smoke has been detected, and/or how far a fire may have progressed.

Mapei has provided a fast-track repair and resurface solution for the main entrance steps at the Village Hotel, Warrington. Mapei attended the site throughout the project, to provide support on each phase of works, including substrate preparation, repair and resurfacing, over four days, and installation of the primer and protective coating, completed in a single day.
