A free guide aimed at improving the safety of buildings has been published by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and other professional bodies.
The publication, titled “Guide to Products Critical to Safe Construction,” provides designers, specifiers, and installers with the information they need to make informed decisions about construction products and includes examples and case studies to signpost industry best practice, such as the Code for Construction Product Information.
Paul Nash, Chair of CIOB’s Quality Implementation Group, said: “The public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire exposed a construction product regulatory regime that was failing to ensure that the products used in buildings, whether separately or part of a system, were safe.
“Following on from the findings of the Building a Safer Future Report and the Independent Review of Product Testing and Certification, the inquiry recommended that further action was needed to better regulate the manufacturing, testing and supply of products in the UK.
"In February 2025 the government published a Construction Product Reform Green Paper that sets out its proposals to deliver a system that guarantees safe products, safely used. “It is against this backdrop that the CIOB, together with other
professional bodies, has developed this Guide to Products Critical to Safe Construction to ensure the buildings we create, and the products we use in those buildings, are safe for those who use them, now and in the future.”
The guide was published in collaboration with the Construction Products Association [CPA], Code for Construction Product Information [CCPI], Institution of Structural Engineers [IStructE] and Royal Institute of British Architects [RIBA].
Also, detailed recommendations to guide professionals conducting fire risk assessments (FRAs) in housing premises have been issued by BSI, aiming to deliver enhanced clarity, consistency and assurance and ultimately help protect people.
The standard, Fire Risk Assessment – Housing – Code of Practice (BS 9792:2025) is an update to past guidance and provides a comprehensive framework and documentation examples for assessing fire risks in residential settings.

AIM floor barrier system facilitates services
Installers are often faced with the challenge of maintaining the cavity barriers’ integrity and insulation when passing services through raised access floors. AIM Acoustic & Insulation Manufacturing’s new technical solution combines its Raised Access Floor Barrier (RAFB) with Rockwool Ablative Batts to provide a tested, cost-effective solution. The AIM RAFB is used to subdivide large uninterrupted cavities and maintain partition fire ratings when aligned under a partition. When penetration is required to pass services through the AIM RAFB, two Rockwool FirePro® Coated Batts, the same height as the underfloor cavity, are placed on either side of the barrier. The services are then passed through both the RAFB and the Ablative batts with any small gaps filled with Rockwool FirePro® Acoustic Sealant, pipe sleeves and pipe closers.

ARC Building Solutions’ Retrofit Wall Plate Insulator (RWPI) Combat damp, mould, and heat loss at the eaves
The RWPI is a solution for combating damp and mould at the eaves detail when access can be gained over the wall plate. Designed for retrofit projects, the RWPI provides continuous insulation over the wall plate into the soffit, while maintaining the 10,000mm² ventilation area required for most cold lofts. This reduces thermal bridging, improves the psi-value, and enhances whole-house thermal performance. Warmer internal walls lower the risk of condensation and mould, creating healthier living conditions. Simple to install, thanks to a patented fixing strap, and PAS 2035 compliant, the RWPI fits all rafter spacings and solves hard-to-treat sloped ceiling details with effective insulation and ventilation. Where access over the wall plate is blocked, ARC’s Retrofit Eaves Insulator provides the alternative solution.

Milbank Concrete Products is proud to announce the official launch of the refreshed brand identity and website for Kallisto Stairs, its luxury sub-brand specialising in bespoke precast concrete staircases. The rebrand includes a new logo, refined visual identity, and the launch of a modern website that reflects Kallisto’s position in the high-end architectural and residential market. The evolution of the brand aligns with the expectations of a discerning audience - architects, developers, and private clients working on landmark projects across the UK. “Kallisto has always delivered precision-crafted, gracefully curved staircases - pieces that elevate a space far beyond the functional,” said Innovation & Strategy Director, David Costin. “This rebrand brings the external identity in line with the quality of the product we’ve been delivering for years.” Originally styled with visual cues from Milbank, including its signature orange, Kallisto’s previous identity no longer matched the market it serves today. The updated branding includes: A new gold and navy colour palette, replacing the industrial orange with tones more closely associated with luxury, elegance, and timelessness. A refined logo, using a sophisticated spiral to reflect the flowing curves of Kallisto staircases. A fully redesigned website (kallistostairs.co.uk), created to inspire architects, support developers, and attract high-net-worth clients who value both beauty and craftsmanship. The rebrand isn’t simply visual. It’s part of a broader repositioning of Kallisto as a trusted partner in the creation of architectural centrepieces - staircases that are structurally sound, effortlessly elegant, and delivered with precision.
“This is more than a new logo or a colour change,” said Managing Director, Lee Cowen.
“It’s a visual expression of the direction we’ve been heading for years - toward a brand that reflects the kind of spaces our stairs inhabit: elegant, considered, and exceptional.”

Tensile and compressive loads – structural waterproofing
Tensile and compressive stress and strain are two common types. Tensile stress increases an object’s length, while compressive stress decreases it. These stresses help determine a material’s elastic modulus, indicating its stiffness. Tensile and compressive loads are key in mechanics and engineering. Tensile load stretches materials, causing elongation. Compressive load compresses materials, causing them to shorten. We encourage you to ask questions about our products and services. Transparency and honesty are our core values. Enquiring helps us learn, understand, and grow. It allows us to gather information, clarify doubts, and gain deeper insights. Howells Patent Glazing has supplied two new rooflights for the conservation and redevelopment of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.
The most dramatic of the two installations is the flat rooflight which sits above the iconic Grade II listed Kiln. To maximise the natural light levels, Howells designed a large 2m x 2m aluminium flat rooflight with double glazing. The rooflight is fixed to four upstand kerbs and achieves a 1.0 W/ m2K U-value which contributes to the building’s thermal performance. A second rooflight was
specified for the space which connects the adapted Kiln and North Engine House and the existing Cross Mill. This rooflight is constructed in accordance with BS 5516 and BS 1474 from aluminium glazing bars with thermal barrier and four panes of glass. Due to the 5° pitch and location of the self-supported rooflight, Howells selected Class 2 non-fragility glazing. It was glazed onsite using 28mm double glazed units with a 6mm toughened and Easy Clean outer pane and 9.5mm clear inner pane. Once again, the centre pane achieves a 1.0 W/m2K U-value.

Developed to EN 15804+A2 and verified to ISO 14025:2011, the EPD provides transparent, third-party assessed data on environmental performance, including global warming potential, energy use, and water consumption across the full life cycle. The new EPD has also been developed in line with BS EN 18001:2024 Environmental product declarations – Product category rules for curtain walling. Unlike more generic EPDs, Senior’s publication includes all system components—thermal breaks, gaskets, fixings—and accounts for fabrication, delivery, and the energy-intensive extrusion process. The SF52 EPD is available via NBS Source or by contacting Luke Osborne, Senior’s UK sustainability lead, at lukeo@sasmail.co.uk.

FIREFLY systems restore compartmentation at hospital
An exhaustive four-month project to replace existing fire compartmentation walls within the labyrinthine roof-spaces to a Nottinghamshire community hospital has been successfully carried out by a Midlands based contractor, highly experienced in the installation of the FIREFLY® systems used. In total, the work carried out in the third quarter of last year saw its six-man team install some 650m2 of vertical barrier and a further 490m2 of horizontal protection atop these new walls. The carefully designed installations, including a variety of project specific details, made use of Zeus Lite 90:30 and Zeus Horizontal 60:30 FIREFLY® barriers, together with FB180 batts mechanically fixed to the soffit: forming a ‘protected zone’ extending to 1500mm either side of the wall.

Promat’s fire-rated glass door systems balance natural light with assured safety
Two steel-framed glass door systems from Promat UK enable natural light transmission to be maximised within buildings whilst also offering 30 or 60-minute fire protection. The Promat PYROSEC® Door and PYROSEC® SLIMLITE Door systems have been tested to provide integrity and insulation (EI) fire resistance for 30 and 60 minutes, making them suitable for use in the majority of buildings. Both offer a strong aesthetic appeal thanks to their large vision panels, which facilitate a high level of natural light flow through buildings. This is achieved thanks to minimal stainless steel frame members, with the PYROSEC® SLIMLITE Door offering a super-slim option.
