Thriving despite dry spell DESPITE the hot and dry weather, Boy the otter at the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari, joyfully swims around his enclosure to the amusement of all his “fans”.

“Boy! Boy! Come here,” yelled zoo guide K. Sivaneshkumar, 27.

And Boy eagerly swam to the front of his enclosure and grabbed a fish with its claws.

He then took a big bite of the fish and gleefully chomped on his food, ignoring the crowd outside.

The animals in the zoo looked unaffected by the dry and hot weather which has hit most states in the country.

The zoo’s veterinary officer Dr. Muhamad Ridhwan Affendi said the zoo is strategically located near the foot of Bukit Larut (formerly known as Maxwell Hill).

“We have a stream flowing from Bukit Larut into the nearby Taiping Lake Gardens, where water from the lake also flows into the zoo.

“The water from the lake fills up the ponds in the zoo.

“However, the pond at the elephant enclosure uses ground water,” he added.

“We use piped water for cleaning purposes. We have not faced any water disruptions so far, and we continuously care for the welfare of our animals here,” he said.

Dr. Muhamad Ridhwan said the zoo added vitamins into the feed of the animals to boost their immune system.

“The dry season is rather stressful for the animals and a stronger immune system can give them the resistance needed to adjust to the extreme weather.

“Vitamins in powder form are provided to the animals daily,” he added.

Smoke emission continues despite complaints THE acrid smoke from a factory in Kemuning Residence, Shah Alam, which has been irritating residents for a few years has not only continued but has worsened, with many saying their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

The smoke surrounding their neighbourhood has increased during the day, forcing many to consider moving out permanently, said residents. They said the factory had been emitting smoke for a few years, but conditions worsened late last year.

They have lodged numerous complaints to various authorities including Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Selangor Environment Department, and the office of the Selangor Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Elizabeth Wong.

Khoo said that there were many young families with children and babies.

“People here are suffering. How long do we have to wait until the authorities take action?” he asked.

A resident, who only wished to be known as Phillip, said it was evident the issue was not being addressed as they had not heard of any action taken by the authorities.

“The smoke was really bad on Feb 17 when it reached our rooms upstairs. There is pollution for a few hours several times a day, usually mid-morning and again in the afternoon and even on the weekends,” he said.

Phillip said they checked to see if they could open up the windows to air the house every morning to get rid of the pollution from the night before.

“We then have to remain alert in order to close the windows again as soon as the pollution recurs,” he added.

He said a new illegal dumpsite was discovered burning garbage during the wee hours of the morning.

“There are now two issues in the area that needs to be addressed. We have contacted the land office and are waiting for feedback on the land owner to take further action,” he added.

In a statement, Wong said the state, MBSA and the Department of Environment have been investigating and monitoring the factory closely.

the fun page PLASTIC is the largest source of pollutant in the oceans. It takes about 700 years for plastic to breakdown. Many marine animals choke and die when they eat these plastic pollutants. They do so because they mistake the plastic elements for food. Here are some amazing facts about some marine animals that live in the oceans and hunt for food in the oceans. Guess the animals and complete the crossword puzzle.

Donkey in the well ONCE upon a time, there lived a farmer who had a donkey. The donkey served his master well when it was strong and agile. Now the donkey had grown old. It now spent most of its time grazing in the fields.

One day, the farmer’s donkey fell into a well. The farmer heard the pitiful cries of the animal and rushed over.

He thought hard for more than an hour but did not know what to do. Finally, he decided to put the donkey out of its misery, as the donkey was already old and had served its purpose. He felt that it wasn’t worth the effort trying to get the donkey out of the well.

So he invited all his neighbours to come over. He gave each of them a shovel and asked that they shovel dirt into the well. He thought that it would be best to bury the donkey alive so that it would be a quick death.

As dirt fell into the well, the donkey began to bray and snort hysterically as he realised what was happening. After awhile, he quieted down.

This made the farmer and his neighbours curious. So the farmer looked down into the well. To his amazement, he saw that the donkey shook off every mound of dirt that fell on him and took a step up.

The donkey continued to do this as the neighbours shovelled dirt into the well. Soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

How scientists are using VR to show people the effects of global warming ONE problem with global warming, in the eyes of many scientists, is the same problem faced by McDonald’s and Ford and a million other consumer products.

Is global warming something the average person thinks much about? Does anybody think it’s something they can do anything about, especially when there are bigger industrial contributors?

To be sure, this is only part of the problem. Scientists generally agree that the increasingly likely effects of global warming – everything from rising seas and extreme storms and droughts to the spread of diseases and starvation – are, in fact, bigger hurdles.

But getting people to feel personally connected is the first step to stemming its effects.

And the reason has to do with the problem itself. Global warming is such a big concept – so potentially catastrophic and life-changing, so seemingly impossible to prevent – that it’s tough for people to see how they fit into the problem.

The technology that’s re-shaping computer gaming and entertainment (and, soon, medicine, communication and retail) is the hot new tool for scientists who explain to non-scientists the consequences of human behaviour on the atmosphere.

That’s why scientists from a variety of institutions and disciplines are turning to virtual reality (VR) to help turn a huge idea into something that regular people can think about.

“VR is bridging the gap,” said Nick Sadrpour, a science, research and policy specialist with the Sea Grant program at USC. The technology, Sadrpour explained, is helping make the link “between climate change being a remote impact for folks, to being something a little more personal.”

In November, 2016, the USC Sea Grant, in partnership with the US Geological Survey, set up a VR headset on the Santa Monica Pier.

Dubbed the Owl, the lenses of the mounted binoculars showed four projections including what the beach looked like in the 1920s, what it could look like in a big storm under current conditions and then, with sea level rise, what a major storm could do to the beach in the future.

The most severe of these scenarios showed a beachfront restaurant with waves climbing up the windows and seawater out to Pacific Coast Highway. The last image in the series illustrated how the shoreline can be restored with sand dunes and native grasses to prevent flooding the way it was before human intervention.

Future continuous tense The future continuous tense is used to describe an action that will be going on for an expected length of time in the future.

Page 16 There are 10 global warming indicators discovered by scientists. The three indicators I think are important are the increase in humidity, increase in sea level and the reduction of sea ice.

The increase in humidity can show an increase in the temperature. People start to feel stuffy and breathless. In addition to that, the health of people becomes an issue.

When the sea level increases, the sea can overflow. This can cause floods and destruction especially to the people who live close to the sea. Sea creatures are also affected by this change in their habitat.

year 4 – the weather Do you know the colours in a rainbow? There are seven colours in this order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. What is the acronym for these colours? They are: ROYGBIV. What is an acronym? It is a short form of words that make up the initial letters of the words and is usually pronounced as a word. Here’s an example: NASA (that stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration).

Sometimes, people use mnemonics (the first letter ‘m’ is silent) that are like simple rhymes to remember what these words stand for. So a simple mnemonic to remember ROYGBIV could be: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.

Work in groups and have some fun with mnemonics using the colours of the rainbow: ROYGBIV. Scan The Star for words that can create a suitable sentence for this mnemonic. Share your answers and remember, have fun!

Since Jan 1, 2017, residents in Selangor no longer get free plastic bags when they shop.

Under this ruling, plastic bags can only be given for items such as raw meat (chicken, fish, beef and mutton) and plants or roots covered in sand or soil (like potatoes and ginger), flowers, unwrapped loose seeds, products (prescription and poisonous substances) and live fish or aquatic products.

This effort is an extension of the waste separation rule to lessen our carbon footprints. Residents in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Perlis and Kedah have to separate their trash into two main categories: dry and wet waste.

Dry waste can be separated further into recyclable materials such as plastic, paper and others. So have you been separating your waste at home? As a class, study the illustration on the left that appeared in The Star. Discuss how waste should be separated, and give some examples. When the class is done with the discussion, keep your copy of Step Up aside.

Now we are going to play a memory game to see how good you are at managing your household waste. First, everyone goes through his copy of The Star. Cut out pictures of items that could end up in the garbage bin (the cut outs can be in the form of words or pictures).

Each person looks for 10 such items. Hand them in to your teacher once you are done.

Next, gather in groups of four. Your teacher will mix these cuttings and redistribute them to your group randomly.

Your teacher will decide on how many items each group will receive.
