Simple past tense Simple past tense is used to describe an action that happened in the past. It can be in the form of regular verbs and irregular verbs.

Telling a story in simple past tense HERE’S a creative speaking game you can play in groups of six.

We are going to tell a chain story within each group. You make up a story as you go along. One student will start an introductory phrase. Then, each member takes turns by adding to the story.

Here’s the catch: you must create a sentence in your story that uses a verb in the past tense. But which verb do you use? Here’s where it gets exciting! The verbs you can use are printed in these cards below.

Each card has three verbs. You only need to use any ONE of the verbs in the card to complete your turn.

How to play: Cut out these cards. Mix them up and pile them, face down, one on top of the other. In the first round, everyone picks a card and places his card in front of him, with the words facing upwards for everyone else to see. As the story goes along, create the story but remember, you must use ONE WORD on your card in the past tense. Only then is your turn over and the next group member continues the story. When you have finished, replace the card in the main pile and pick another one.

(Note to teacher: Pupils can change the story if the story ends or gets too boring.)

Adverbs of place Adverbs of places are used to tell where something happens. They are usually placed after the main verb.

Birbal and the gold coins ONCE upon a time, there lived a great emperor in India named Akbar. Akbar had a wise advisor in his court named Birbal.

The emperor’s brother-in-law was very jealous of Birbal and wished to take Birbal’s place as court advisor.

So he approached the emperor and assured him that he would be a better replacement than Birbal. Before Akbar could make a decision, Birbal, the emperor’s loyal advisor, resigned to make way for the emperor’s brother-in-law.

Akbar decided to test his new advisor. He called his brother-in-law and said to him, “Here are 300 gold coins. Spend them as such that I get 100 gold coins in this life, 100 gold coins in my afterlife and another 100 gold coins neither here nor there.”

Akbar’s brother-in-law became distraught. He was unable to understand this test. He could not sleep for many nights as he failed to understand the task set by the emperor. Finally, he decided to seek Birbal’s help.

He met Birbal the next day and told Birbal of his plight.

“Just give me your gold coins. I shall take care of this,” said Birbal.

Birbal walked the streets that evening. As he did so, he noticed a grand wedding celebration. A rich merchant’s son was getting married. Birbal approached the merchant and introduced himself. Then he said: “Emperor Akbar send his wishes to you and the newlyweds. He gives his blessings to them and this gift of 100 gold coins.”

The merchant felt honoured that the king sent an esteemed advisor to bestow his best wishes. He also valued the precious gift of 100 gold coins. In return, the merchant gave Birbal many expensive presents and a bag of gold coins for the king.

Then Birbal left the celebration and walked the streets again. He saw many poor people living on the streets. He bought food and clothing with another 100 gold coins. He distributed the items to the poor in the name of the emperor.

As he walked home, he saw some musicians on the street. Some townsfolk had gathered to dance and sing as well. He stopped and spent 100 gold coins at the music fair.

The next day, Birbal entered the emperor’s palace. He told Emperor Akbar that he had done all that the emperor had wanted his new minister to do. The emperor asked Birbal how he had done so.

Birbal told the emperor what he had done the night before, in sequence.

“The money I gave to the merchant for his son’s wedding – you have gotten back while on this earth. The money I spent on buying food and clothing for the poor – you will get it in the other world. The money I spent on the music fair – you will get neither here nor there.”

Emperor Akbar’s brother-in-law who stood among the emperor’s advisors understood his mistake and hung his head in shame. He resigned. The emperor was pleased and appointed Birbal his esteemed advisor once again.

Story of Lebai Malang PAK Lebai was an indecisive person. He lived in between two villages.

One day, he received an invitation to a wedding feast at the village in the North. He was happy to know that there would be a lot of delicacies offered.

In the evening, he received an invitation from the village in the South. It was for a wedding feast that would happen at the same time as the earlier invitation. The invitation from the southern village also said that the food would be twice as much as the one offered by the invitation from the northern village.

Pak Lebai thought of going to both receptions so that he could bring some food home.

On that very day, Pak Lebai rowed his boat upstream to the northern village. As he was rowing, he thought that it would be better to attend the invitation from the southern village since there would be more food choices. He turned his boat downstream. On his way South, he thought that it must be crowded since it was a grand party. He started to change his direction over and over again. He could not make up his mind. When he reached the northern village, the party was over.

In the end, he missed both feasts and ended up tired and hungry.

Correlative conjunction - Either/or The correlative conjunction either/or is used to offer choice or to refer to two possibilities.

Kata hubung korelatif ‘either/or’ digunakan untuk menawarkan pilihan atau untuk merujuk kepada dua kemungkinan.

THE FUN PAGE WHEN you read an advertisement in the newspaper or watch one on the television, how do you tell if the advertiser is telling you a fact or giving you an opinion?

Well, a fact is something that can be explained with research and evidence. An opinion is a view or a belief.

When you wish to give an opinion, there are certain key phrases you can use to indicate that you are stating your belief. Examples of these phrases are: q q q q q q

I’m afraid I don’t think you are right...

Now, let’s practise. Each task card below lists one opinion and two facts.

1. First, go through each card on your own. Decide whether the statements are fact or opinion. Label each statement ‘F’ for fact or ‘O’ for opinion.

2. If you have found the opinion statement, respond to it by writing your own opinion at the bottom of the task card.

3. Finally, share your answers with a partner. Your teacher will help you clear any doubts.

The Sandwich Oh what shall I have Today for my tea?

I know - a sandwich, As big as can be!

I’ll start with the bread, Two slices quite large; Then slap on some jam, Oh yes, and some marge, I’ll put in some cheese, A tomato or two, And maybe an onion This big one will do!

I’ll bung in some lettuce, A radish of course, And…a sizzling burger, All covered in sauce!

Add in some chicken, And maybe some chips, Some biscuits, an apple, A packet of crisps, A cake with some candles, Some chocolate (one bar), Spaghetti, bananas, Sweets from a jar, Baked beans and humbugs, Carrot and mustard, All topped off with cream And steaming hot custard…

Now a sandwich like that You really can’t beat, It’s packed out with goodies, A real tasty treat.

There’s only one problem; It’s breaking my heart….

YEAR 4 – MANAGING TIME The newspapers print stories to keep its readers informed. The events that are reported have already happened. If you look at the headlines of the articles, however, you would notice that some headlines are written in the present tense.

Your teacher is going to select 10 headlines from your copy of The Star today. She will write them on the board. In pairs, scan The Star to look for each correct headline. State the page number the story is on.

Then, write the headline in the past tense. The first pair that gets all 10 headlines correct wins!

(Note to teacher: Look for 10 headlines that have been written in the present tense.

You can choose one section of the paper to make newspaper handling easier for your pupils.)

YEAR 5 – MIND YOUR MANNERS 1. Fold the 12-page tabloid into half.

2. Cut on the dotted line indicated on the page.

Here’s a simple game you can play while you practise good manners. First, each pupil scans The Star for four pictures of food. Cut the pictures out and paste them on the paper plate below. Label what each food is. Next, gather in groups of four. Set up your ‘table‘ with the food all of you have selected.

1. Each pupil will hold up the food plate he has brought and identify what it is.

2. Then, he will say whether he likes the dish/food.

3. Next, he asks the friend seated next to him, “Would you like (name of food here)?”

4. His friend will answer, “Yes, please” or “No, thank you” depending on his preference.

5. He then takes the plate and passes it on to the next pupil, asking the next pupil the same questions in the same sequence.

6. The activity goes on until all four members of the team have completed their sets of food.

Example: Pupil A (says to Pupil B): These are green peas.

Pupil A (says to Pupil B): I don’t like green peas.

Pupil A (says to Pupil B): Would you like some green peas?

Pupil B (says to Pupil A): No, thank you.

Pupil B (says to Pupil C): These are green peas.

3. Once you have cut it, you can staple the pages near the folded side.

YEAR 6 – DECISIONS, DECISIONS 4. You now have a small and flexible note book.

Advertisers write advertisements. You can find many examples of advertisements in The Star on homes, cars and vitamins. For example, an advertiser may promote a particular brand of Vitamin C and state: “Children love this flavour”. But this may not necessarily be true. So it’s not always easy to spot facts and opinions in an advertisement.

Pick an advertisement from The Star. In groups of four, scan the advertisement.

Can you spot facts and opinions expressed by the advertiser? Circle facts in blue and circle what you think are opinions – in red. Share your findings as a class when you are done.
