EVERY year on the 31st of August, Malaysians celebrate the country’s independence from British rule.

Many may not have been around to witness the fight for independence, but it is widely known that the freedom we now enjoy was made possible by Tunku Abdul Rahman, also known as Malaysia’s Father of Independence.

Born in Alor Setar, Kedah, Tunku graduated from Cambridge University, England. In 1951, he started his political career when he was appointed the president of UMNO (United Malays Nationalist Organization). He joined forces with MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association) and MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress) and won the elections in 1955.

In 1956, he began to work very hard for our country’s freedom through peaceful negotiations. The work was tedious but he was determined not to give up.

Finally, on August 31, 1957, the British granted Malaya its independence and Tunku became its first Prime Minister.

Malaysians of all races celebrate this special day every year and we are proud of our great Malaysian leader.

the fun page WHAT is an idiom? An idiom is a group of words which has a special meaning. Colour idioms are often used to describe people and things in our daily conversation. Read the following story. Spot the use of three colour idioms in the story:

The Raven and the Swan A Raven, which you know is as black as coal, was envious of the Swan, because her feathers were as white as snow. The foolish bird got the idea that if he lived like the Swan, swimming and diving all day long and eating the weeds and plants that grow in the water, his feathers would turn white like the Swan’s. So he left his home in the woods and fields and flew down to live on the lakes and in the marshes. But though he washed and washed all day long, almost drowning himself at it, his feathers remained as black as night. And as the water weeds he ate did not agree with him, he got thinner and thinner, and at last he died.

The Camel and the Jackal ONCE upon a time there was a Camel and a Jackal who were good friends.

They used to wander together on the bank of the river. They helped each other to find food. One day, there was a shortage of food in their area.

The Camel suggested they search for food on the other side of the river bank. The Jackal agreed but said that he did not know how to swim. So the Camel asked him to get onto his back.

He would carry the Jackal across the wide and deep river.

When they reached the other side, they discovered a large melon field.

Both friends entered the field and began to eat melons with delight. The Jackal was soon full. He began to howl.

The Camel asked Jackal to stop this but the Jackal told the Camel that howling after a hearty meal was his habit. Despite the request of the Camel, the Jackal did not stop howling.

The farmer who owned the field heard the Jackal howl. He ran to the field with a thick and heavy stick.

The Jackal upon seeing the farmer, ran away as fast as he could. The Camel, who was not as agile, was beaten by the farmer. The Camel was bruised and hurt.

When Camel finally darted away to the riverbank, he saw Jackal waiting for him. Then, they started their journey back to the other side.

The Jackal was enjoying his ride on the Camel. When the Camel reached the middle of the river, he dived into the water. The Jackal began to shout and gasp! He begged the Camel not to do so. But the Camel told him that bathing after a hearty meal was his habit.

The Camel dived so deep that the Jackal drowned in the river.

Puteri Gunung Ledang was a beautiful fairy princess who lived in Gunung Ledang. She swore never to take a husband.

However, the Raja of Melaka, who was already married to the Princess of Java and the Princess of China, decided to marry Puteri Gunung Ledang. He dispatched his warriors to deliver his proposal. They faced numerous obstacles but eventually Tun Mamat, a brave warrior, made it.

In a garden, he found four women to whom he delivered the Raja’s proposal but they all quickly vanished into the thin air. Later that night, an old lady appeared and insisted that the Raja had to build a bridge of gold and a bridge of silver connecting Melaka to Gunung Ledang for Puteri Gunung Ledang. Other requests were seven trays of mosquito hearts, seven trays of mite hearts, seven barrels of bettlenut juice, seven barrels of maiden tears and a barrel filled with the blood of the Raja’s son.

It was clear that the princess did not want to marry the Raja. The Raja agreed to all the requests except that he would not give the blood of his son.

Later, the fairy princess is said to have fled to the mountains where she lives in a hidden cave to this day.

year 6 – adjectives We are going to create adjective monsters! Gather in groups of four. Then, scan The Star for 10 adjectives that describe a living creature. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A4 paper. Once that is done, hand in the sheet to your teacher who will redistribute the A4 sheets to every group. (Make sure you don’t get your own sheet.)

Once you have received another group’s A4 sheet, write down a name of a body part next to each adjective. Now you’re set to create an adjective monster based on the descriptions on your list! Use the space below to craft your monster. Then, share your picture with the class before pining up your masterpiece on the board!

PART ONE Template example: Adjective (taken from The Star)

Noun (fill in by naming any body part of a creature – person or animal)

3. Once you have cut it, you can staple the pages near the folded side.
