The plain and simple truth TruSTWOrTHINESS is a long word indeed. But put simply, it means the ability to keep promises, and be honest, reliable and principled, while never betraying a confidence or promise. Trustworthiness is important because it relies on the character of a person.

Would having these qualities in a friend matter to you? Would it be fair that you possess these qualities, too, before you expect them from others?

Take this short self-evaluation test and decide.

WHY do people lie?

Some tell white lies – small untruths – to avoid upsetting others or to make life “easier”. Studies have found that children begin to tell lies at about age three but honesty increases as people get older. For the majority of people, honesty is the best policy!

What does honesty look like? Is it safe to simply judge a person by the way he appears? Scan The Star for two faces: one of a person you think is honest and another of a person you think is dishonest.

In a 2016 study by the University of British Columbia in Canada, researchers found some amazing facts about how people think if someone is trustworthy.

Two studies showed that people often make judgements based solely on the face. We do so as a “survival” instinct because we need to form an impression of the person. For example, a person who has a rounder face is perceived as more trustworthy than someone who has a thinner face.

You can often find many stories of greed, corruption and dishonesty in the newspapers that may incorporate the use of such phrasal verbs in their headlines. Gather into groups of four (with each group being assigned to one phrasal verb). Scan The Star for stories about these negative values.

Write an appropriate headline for one such story using the phrasal verb your group has been assigned to.

Share a summary of your story and the recommended headline with your classmates.

Here are four phrasal verbs that touch on dishonesty.

Phrasal Verbs l Cover up: to stop people from discovering the truth about something bad. l Dig up: to discover new facts about a person or situation after a lot of searching. l Catch out: to discover that someone is lying or doing something wrong. l Find out: to discover that someone has been dishonest or has tricked you.

Everyone can be a hero!

THE moment superheroes are mentioned, we almost always think of heroic characters that thrive in comic books and the silver screen. But in reality, there are many people in society who have carried out courageous deeds worthy of praise. They carry out their responsibilities as part of their obligation to society. Who are we referring to? Look around and you will see faces of people who are policemen, firemen, paramedics and even teachers!

These are people we can often count on. There are many others from more professions who dedicate their lives for the betterment of society. List your answers on the board.

THE National Monument (Tugu Negara) located in Kuala Lumpur is a bronze sculpture built in 1966. It serves as a memorial to the fallen soldiers who died for the country during the Japanese Occupation and the Malayan Emergency.

The National Monument was designed by an American architect named Felix de Weldon. The statue consists of seven soldiers carrying the Malaysian flag. What do you think the *seven soldiers signify?

Ever since the civilisation of man, monuments have been built as tributes to kings and gods. Monuments can symbolise many things such as that of hope, love or adoration.

Imagine that you were to craft a monument as a tribute to trustworthiness. What kinds of people, animals or images would symbolise this monument? In groups of four, discuss the four pillars of trustworthiness which are honesty, keeping to promises, integrity and loyalty. Then, design a monument to celebrate and honour this value.

Construct your monument using building material (like boxes and construction paper) or design it on a sheet of A3 paper. At least three images must be taken from The Star.

When your group is done, you will have to present your monument of trustworthiness to the class and explain what aspect of trustworthiness your image represents.

A LITTLE dishonesty goes a long way. Scientists who studied the brain activity of people who told small lies to benefit themselves found that these fibs appeared to pave the way to telling whoppers later.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, demonstrate how self-serving lies can escalate and offer a window into the processes in the brain at work.

“Whether it’s evading tax, infidelity, doping in sports, making up data in science, or financial fraud, deceivers often recall how small acts of dishonesty snowballed over time and they suddenly found themselves committing quite large crimes,” said Tali Sharot of University College London.

The researchers suspected this had to do with a biological process known as emotional adaptation, where over time the brain responds less and less strongly to a repeated stimulus.

The first time you put on a perfume, for example, you smell it clearly; on the 10th day, you might hardly detect it. The amount of perfume hasn’t changed, but your brain’s response has. Something similar might be happening when people lie, she explained.

“The first time you cheat, you feel quite bad about it, but that bad feeling keeps you from cheating a whole lot,” she said. “So it’s good. It curbs your dishonesty.”

But over time, the brain reacts less and less, the way it would to a strong smell.

And a lower negative reaction could make it easier to lie the next time, the theory goes.

Work with a partner on this activity. First, cut out the wheel below with the word “trustworthy” as the hub. Write a word on each spoke to represent either a synonym or an antonym to describe trustworthiness. While you may use a dictionary to complete the activity, you must look for at least three words from The Star and paste them onto the spokes.

Next, pass your completed wheel to your teacher who will redistribute the wheels to different pairs of students. Complete the wheel by stating if the word in each spoke is a synonym or an antonym.
