SS Quetta blessing

BY VELMA GARA

A memorial church service will be held at All Souls and St Bartholomew Church for shipwreck of the SS Quetta and the Cyclone Mahina disaster on Sunday.

SS Quetta was wrecked on 28 February 1890 and the Cyclone Mahina disaster occurred in March 1899 at Bathurst Bay in Cape Melville.

It’s been 30 years since centenary celebrations were held on Thursday Island to mark the loss.

An inaugural blessing of marine monuments has been organised for the service on Sunday, which will be at 9.30am and followed by light lunch. Community is invited, and to also bring a plate to share.

At 6.30pm a traditional feast will be held at the Anglican Hall.
