ABOUT THE SITE
The 19.47 acre site is located on a hilltop at Simtokha overlooking the Thimphu valley and it is approximately about 3km from Thimphu Expressway. With ample privileged views on an isolated hill, the location becomes a desirable place for one to go and unwind and the abundance of natural vegetation surrounding the site makes it an excellent location for a retreat program. The site also faces one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Perched at an altitude of 2655 mt, Kuensel Phodrang, overlooking the Thimphu Valley is one of the iconic landscapes of Thimphu, Bhutan. The gigantic Golden figurine of Buddha Dordenma has made the location the most favored sightseeing place in Thimphu. D E S I G N :

DESIGN SOLUTIONS
Cost-Efficient Standardization was the key cost-saving aspect of this project. The repetition provided design and cost efficiency through streamlining the fabrication and buying of materials, and a greater degree of construction quality control. The mandala-inspired landscape was conceptualized in the fairly flat and current parking area.

MANDALA-INSPIRED LANDSCAPE
The circular landscape sits at the space’s heart and reinterprets how we can spend time outdoors. The curvy elements encourage friendly and playful interactions and engagement between strangers, while the overall circular design acts as a safe and comfortable gathering space. The arced prayer flags create an interplay of light and shadow making the space vibrant. It also enhances the circularity of the landscape giving a visual flow.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNTION
The plannings are kept as simple and straightforward as possible, avoiding distracting elements or exaggerated decorations. As practices here are mostly carried out in permanent contact with the ground, floors are usually covered with wood.
Site Model The experience of relaxation and well-being are deemed to match better with a design inclusive of the natural environment so the planning is very much responsive to the organic flow of nature in the area.

MANDALA - LANDSCAPE
While the building designs appreciate the brilliance of the area, the mandala inspired landscape keeps it private and cozy. The design pushes the stereotyped mood of a retreat center towards a more playful and vibrant overall experience. The visitors are encouraged to meander past or through a series of spatial experiences.

The stone pavement, timber frames, steel details indicate that it is a spa, stemming from natural elements.
The circular pavilion offers a site to rest, enjoy the panoramic view of the valley, drink tea, and relax in the cool summer breeze.
Lotus-shaped platform encircles the users maintaining a central focus and at the same time, the petals provide a private individual space.
The semi-private structure extends the natural terrain activating the spot with privileged views and connecting the edges of the site.
The combination of glass and wooden frames produce a dance of light and shadow responding to the cyclical behavior of natural light.
The essence of the spa adapts to the feel of hot springs native to Bhutan. Bamboo mesh shades control light and privacy.

The idea for the suites was that of a pavilion: isolated and meditative in character. The arrangement of the suites in both locations has a radial effect so that the sunrise and the sunset hit each one differently. The foundational part of the structure was later changed from columns to stone walls due to the nature of the hill in one location. The suites in the other location will remain as per the design.

Areas with a gradient of 25-45° slope can be used for the development of the resort using stilts or retaining walls.

Areas with a gradient of 5-25° slope can be used for the development of the resort.

Site Gradient Analysis A huge chunk of the area with a slope of 0-5° is adjoining the river. Relatively a huge area is still left after leaving 30m buffer from the river. However, the area has the potential to be developed for public activities.

Climatology The site has a gradient that faces north. Thereby, the plot does not receive enough sunlight. This is advantageous climatically for hot places like Punakha. Area For Future Expansion

Riverfront Area The base of the site adjoining the Mo Chhu has a flat ground providing a space that gives a feel of the beach. However, since this area falls in the buffer zone from the river it is left open for the public.

Rafting Area The current rafting area is just about 2km from the site. Apart from the rafting facility being in proximity, the site offers a splendid view of the village.

The 9.5 acre site is located in Laku village, which is about 7.5km from Punakha Dzong towards Gasa. The site being located in the village away from the chaotic city life and adjoining the river Mo Chhu gives it ample opportunities for a resort to provide people with the pleasure of blending with nature. The site faces the splendor of Yebisa village on the other side of the river with Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten shining like the precious jewel on the top of a royal crown. The most visited hot spring at Gasa is about 95km from the site. The site in total has the best location to provide everything that the country Bhutan is best known for in the outside world.

DESIGN SOLUTION
The project is conceived as a vertical network in response to the growing urban population in New York. The building mediates between the existing urban fabric of the Meatpacking District and the addition of more diverse housing. The connecting lines between old and new become public spaces that connect the new apartments to the neighborhood. While the city is typically conceived as a series of horizontal networks, the new building becomes a vertical network, drawing the public street upwards. Bridging through program relationships, views, duplication and public spaces becomes a strategy to generate new vertical networks that exist above and interact with the current urban fabric.

The circulation path through the building creates space from the connections between program spaces. The complex relationships created represent the chaos and density of New York City. Much as the grid creates an ordered reading of the competing and chaotic narratives inherent in New York City, the structural grid of the building and the rigid exterior form act as containers for complexity. The grid as controlling order creates the possibility for multiplicity of readings/experience.

TIMBER
Due to the importance of the grid, the timber structural system becomes a key component of the building’s expression. The structural integrity of the column comes from the weaving of different members and subtly expresses the grace and flexibility of timber construction. The multiplicity of columns creates a dense vertical forest that draws one upward into the upper levels. The main floor connection detail functions without metal fasteners, adding an element of sustainability.

MODULAR UNITS
The new relationships between the private apartments and the public urban spaces are generated by drawing the city vertically into the building blurring the line between public and private. The connections between the public and private spaces are expressed as voids that lend visual identity to the building and allow for flux as they mediate between the public and private activities that come together in them. Turning the street plan vertically creates connections in section as well as in plan, creating a dynamic urban environment inside the building. Because the connective spaces are generated based on relationships between the new program and the existing fabric, they can be repeated modularly throughout the city, while still connecting to the specific urban environments they are placed into.
