FROM THE Head of School

THANK YOU for your incredible generosity and support of Harford Day School during the 2021-22 school year.

The COVID-19 pandemic continued to challenge us; however, the School thrived, largely due to the support of our wonderful community, the commitment and dedication of our faculty and staff, and the passion and engagement of our students.

This 2021-2022 Annual Report recognizes the members of our school community who made a gift to the annual Blue & Green Fund and/or supported the 30th Annual Golf + 5K event between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. The continued generosity of long-time leadership donors and the engagement of philanthropically-minded new families allowed the school to surpass its original goal by 11%, raising a total of $504,000, an all time school record. We look forward to continuing the momentum, reconnecting with alumni, former parents, and community partners.

Thank you to all who contributed to the success of this monumental achievement, and thank you for granting us the privilege of serving your children. Please take some time to look through this annual report to see the impact of your philanthropic support.

Our MISSION

At Harford Day School, learning is a joyful process rooted in respectful relationships, strong traditions, and an innovative program that fosters confidence, imagination, curiosity, and engagement with the world.

Harford Day’s new mission statement succinctly captures the essence of the Harford Day experience that has been consistent since the school’s founding in 1957. The mission serves as our guide, along with our core values, for all decisions great and small. As a faculty and staff we strive to live our mission and values everyday with our students, and invite you, our parents and supporters, to reaffirm it with us as our partners.

HARFORD DAY SCHOOL | 5
WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR SELECTING A PRIVATE, INDEPENDENT SCHOOL?
“We always wanted a small class size and excellent academic programs.”
HDS 2ND GRADE PARENT

WHAT IS THE Blue & Green Fund?

Harford Day’s Blue & Green Fund provides critical unrestricted financial support for the School’s operating expenses.

THE BLUE & GREEN FUND is the primary way for alumni, parents, grandparents, former parents, former grandparents, and friends to support Harford Day. It allows the School to fully live its mission and achieve its vision by providing funds that bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of a Harford Day education.

Gifts to the Blue & Green Fund have a tremendous impact on our ability to sustain

the School’s exceptional faculty, special programs, classroom supplies, arts, athletics, technology, field studies, facilities for the next generation, and so much more. Every gift makes an impact as the entire cost of a Harford Day School education is not covered by tuition and fees alone. Gifts of all amounts are greatly appreciated as we work towards bridging the gap on our annual goal achievement.

6 | HARFORD DAY SCHOOL • 2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT
Every gift, every year, makes a difference.

WHY Participate?

A strong tradition of generosity has allowed the School to grow into one of the finest Preschool through Grade Eight independent schools in the area.

THE BLUE & GREEN FUND unites the entire school community behind the common goal of supporting our students. The average annual giving participation at comparable AIMS schools is over 70%.

High participation is an important vote of confidence,

a fundamental sign that parents and other donors invest and believe in the School’s mission. This percentage can also have an impact on gifts from outside sources; most foundations consider parent participation rates before donating funds to a school.

HARFORD DAY SCHOOL | 7
“We love Harford Day for the community feel that it has, and because of how much parents also contribute to that sense of community.”

FINANCIAL

Operating

HARFORD DAY is committed to prudent financial planning. As an independent school, we receive no financial support from federal, state, or local governments. As a secular school, Harford Day does not receive any financial support from a church or religious affiliate. The sole sources of revenue are tuition, fundraising, interest and dividends, and proceeds from special programs.

Like all independent schools, Harford Day must raise additional funds beyond tuition revenue to balance the current year’s budget and provide for the future.

We ask all parents and other constituents to contribute to the Blue & Green Fund at the beginning of every school year. Your contribution provides direct support to the

educational programs that families, trustees, alumni, and faculty have built and sustained together for 65 years. Parents are also invited to support fundraising events and activities sponsored by our Parent Association, but we ask that your first gift support the Blue & Green Fund.

*Does not include investment loss of $723,000

OTHER WAYS to Give

There are many ways to give to maximize your support of our mission.

PLANNED GIVING

Depending on the type of planned gift you choose, you may receive income from your gift, save on taxes, and donate assets to the School tax free.

MATCHING GIFTS

You may have the option to match your gift through your employer. Matching gifts are a great way to double the impact of your gift to the School. Please check with your company to see if they offer matching gifts.

GIFTS OF STOCK

Gifts of securities, including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, may be transferred through your broker to the School. Donors receive a tax deduction on the fair market value and may avoid capital gains taxes.

Please contact the Office of Advancement for assistance with these types of giving.

HARFORD DAY SCHOOL | 11
Investing in our School ensures that we continue Harford Day’s wonderful legacy, both now and for future generations of students and families.

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteerism not only helps build a stronger program, it also builds a stronger community. Volunteers are an invaluable resource and support base for the School.

When you volunteer, the School will benefit from your involvement and you will too. The interaction with teachers, administrators, and other families will help you gain a better understanding of your child’s education at Harford Day and build closer community ties. Volunteer opportunities include joining the Parent Association, serving as a room parent,

supporting committee work for school events, bringing your expertise to the classroom, and acting as an ambassador by promoting the School in the surrounding community.

Leading by example, parents, alumni, and friends can contribute their time and make a difference at Harford Day.

PLANNED Giving

We play many roles during our lifetime and achieve many successes. What truly matters are the accomplishments that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Each alumna/alumnus, parent, and friend of Harford Day has his or her own reasons for remembering the School in their estate planning. Whether it’s thought of as paying the School back for an excellent education, or paying it forward to benefit generations to come, a planned gift is a meaningful way to make a big impact.

Planned gifts present an opportunity for you to design a legacy that is important to you. Depending on your circumstances and the type of planned gift you choose, you can receive income from your gift while saving on taxes and passing assets to the School, tax-free. Investing in our School ensures that we can continue Harford Day’s mission.

To ensure that future generations of students experience the same or higher levels of excellence as those who came before, we continue to need your support.

For more information on ways you can create a legacy that will benefit Harford Day School, please contact the Office of Advancement, 410-838-4848.

ENDOWMENT Funds

THE FREDERICK MANNION MEMORIAL FUND

This fund was established in 1987 by Virginia Mannion in memory of her son, Frederick, who was a member of the Class of 1966. Frederick Mannion was a successful ophthalmologist who credited Harford Day for preparing him for his later academic achievements. The fund provides scholarship to an incoming Sixth Grader who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and promise. The award remains with the student through his or her middle school years and is given to a new recipient upon the graduation of the previous Mannion Scholar. Growth of the fund has enabled it to provide additional support for other academically gifted students.

THE DRESHER FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT FUND

This fund was established in 2005 by the Dresher Foundation. Proceeds from this fund support HDS faculty professional development and financial aid.

THE KLEIN FAMILY ENDOWMENT FUND

This fund was established in 2011 with a lead gift by The Ralph & Shirley Klein Benevolent Foundation. This fund contributes to the continued long-term maintenance of Harford Day School’s buildings and grounds.

THE JONATHAN D. PEVERLEY MEMORIAL FUND

This fund was established in 1981 by Susan and Sydney Peverley in memory of their son, Jonathan, who was a member of the Class of 1985. Additional gifts were made to the fund in memory of Sydney Peverley. Proceeds from the fund provide financial aid.

THE JOEL MITCHELL ’83 MEMORIAL FUND

This fund was established in 1983 in memory of Joel Mitchell, who was a member of the Class of 1983 and died while he was an Eighth Grader at Harford Day. Proceeds from the fund provide support for the school’s library.

THE SARA BRUMFIELD POLK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in 2005 in memory of Harford Day’s founding head, Sara Brumfield Polk. Proceeds from this fund are used for financial aid.

THE MIGNON CAMERON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This endowed scholarship, named in honor of one of the founders of Harford Day School, is for a mission-appropriate student whose presence in the school will increase the diversity of the student population, whether on a racial, ethnic, socio-economic or any other meaningful basis.

THE ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS FUND

The Parent Association established this fund in 2002 to bring a visiting artist to Harford Day each year. Artists in the visual or performing arts help students develop an appreciation for the arts and establish connections between the arts and other areas of the curriculum. Students have an opportunity to interact with an artist in an informal setting.

THE NANCY RAKACZKY ENDOWMENT

FUND

This fund was established in 2004 in honor of Nancy Rakaczky’s 32-year career as head of the Harford Day kindergarten program. Proceeds from the fund provide financial aid to kindergarten students.

THE KITTY REESE ENDOWMENT FUND

This fund was established in 2008 in honor of Kitty Reese who was a key volunteer in the early years of HDS and who remained connected to the school for over 40 years. Proceeds from this fund are used to support general endowment.

THE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In 1992, the Alumni Association established this fund to provide financial aid for children or siblings of alumni. The Association started the fund using proceeds from its annual antique shows. Several donors have made additional gifts.
