In Second Grade, students are becoming more aware of the world around them. Therefore, many enrichment activities are introduced that stimulate this new found interest in their community, the uniqueness of different cultures, and the variety of literature available to them. Reading and math knowledge and skills are also broadened at this stage through exploration and the application of core concepts for greater mastery. Field study experiences may include visits to the Maryland Science Center, the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center, and a local theater production. Second Graders also participate in a special poetrysharing event and egg-drop event (pictured) on Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day.

The Lower School years, Kindergarten through Grade Five, at Harford Day provide an engaging, enriched educational experience that nurtures the whole child academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively. Through strong relationships, small class sizes, and differentiated instruction, our faculty recognize each child's strengths, encourage perseverance, and inspire confidence while supporting every student’s unique growth.

Learning extends beyond the traditional classroom through our enriched curriculum, field study program, and specialized learning environments, including our dedicated Science and Innovation Labs. Through hands-on experiments, inquiry-based projects, and authentic problem-solving, students collaborate, think critically, and build the knowledge, character, and confidence to engage with the world.
