Dr. N R Narayan Murthy (MT/EE/69) One of the most illustrious and benevolent alumni of IIT Kanpur, Dr. Murthy is the Co-founder and was the Chairman of Infosys before retiring as Chairman Emeritus in 2011. Mr. Murthy began his career as Chief Systems Programmer IIM Ahmedabad and Patni Computer Systems in Pune. He started Infosys in 1981.

Murthy has been listed among the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time by Fortune magazine. He has been described as the "father of the Indian IT sector" by Time magazine due to his contribution to outsourcing in India. Mr. Murthy has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards.

Faculty Initiative: The first faculty chair was set up

by Dr. Murthy at IIT Kanpur namely N Rama Rao Chair which has been supporting and rewarding the exemplary work of the faculty members of Computer Science & Engineering Department

Infrastructural Initiative: The Institute will be ever grateful to Dr. Murthy for his benevolence towards Naming & creating H.R. Khadim Diwan Building which hosts the prestigious Computer Science & Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Former occupant of the N Rama Rao Chair held this chair for a period of 15 years for his significant contributions to research & academia. In his words “N Rama Rao Chair is the first and most distinctive chair in the institute and I consider it a great honor to have occupied it for such a long period and I thank Dr. Murthy for creating this chair”

H.R. Khadim Diwan Building

He extended his kind support towards renovation and upgradation of various student hostels in the Institute. The beautifully designed Visiting Faculty Apartments have also been constructed with his exemplary benefaction. The construction of 4e Lab (Earthquake Engineering education & Extension) was also made possible due to his generosity.

The Department continues to recognize the invaluable support of Dr. Murthy. The fund has been instrumental in nurturing the overall excellence of the department for several years by providing:

Travel advance for attending National & International conferences There is a substantial increase in the number of applications from students over the years and the institute in many cases is not able to support the same due to limited resources, these funds help the students to promote excellence and facilitate research and it acts as a major factor in the Academic Ranking of the Institute.

Initiation grant for New Faculty in CSE Research I foundation fellowship for PhD students travel support for attending various conferences which help them to enhance their research profile.

Infosys fellowships for meritorious students Fellowships and honorarium to new faculty members of Computer Science Engineering Department

Cash awards to students for journal publications Travel support for attending conferences, develop research collaborations.

Support towards Research buying equipment and consumables and contingency for the students, staff, and faculty members of Computer Science & Engineering Department.

Organization of invited lectures, seminars & talks have contributed to broadening the educational experience of students and the faculty community by bringing the smartest, most engaging, and influential people to campus and encourage thought provoking conversations and ideas.

A Distinguished lecture series is organized by the CSE Dept.

Outreach: Yearly workshops, symposium and other academic events are also organized.

Support extended towards central library for buying books & procurement of digital resources.

CSE building maintenance fund for the developmental activities & regular maintenance of H.R. Khadim Diwan Building.

STUDENT INITIATIVE

SURGE Program is one of the academic activities of that witnesses and enhances the student- faculty alliance opportunities, inculcating the culture of research & interdisciplinary education in the new generation. SURGE Program has been constantly supported from NRM Funds. Under SURGE program, undergraduate students from IITK and other participating institutions of our country, as well as overseas, SAARC countries come to IITK undertake short duration, but focused research projects and push their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by the classroom.
