WHY ENDOWING A FACULTY FELLOWSHIP ? ey are vital to our teaching and research mission Donors who contribute to this initiative will be creating a lasting legacy at IIT Kanpur A Rising star faculty creates and sustains a world class Institute. IIT Kanpur owes an everlasting debt to generations of dedicated faculty who have worked with students and alumni to create and sustain IIT Kanpur's unique combination of intellectual community now draws top students from the entire county, and also attracts promising young teachers who seek out our stimulating and supportive atmosphere. Young Faculty Fellowships will appropriately enable the Institute to reward and retain the enthusiastic young faculty on whose teaching, mentoring and scholarly accomplishments the overall future of the Institute depends to a great extent. e future success of IIT Kanpur depends on Young Faculty Our future depends heavily on our ability to attract world-class young faculty, as they in turn attract each new class of outstanding students. Endowing a faculty fellowship is one of the most important contributions you can make to assure IIT Kanpur's long-term future as a premier Institute. World-Changing Research An endowed professorship supports the scholarly pursuits of a talented individual, raising our research output and educational standards. In addition, funds from this endowment will aid their research and creating boundless potential for ground-breaking research within specific disciplines. Motivation towards joining Academia ere are critical reasons that influence the decision of young scholars to pursue a career in teaching or research in India and one of the majors being the gap between the salary which is being paid to our faculty and that received by their peers in corporates is very significant and this gap is increasing. is has led the young scientists and engineers turn away from research or teaching as a career option. In order to leverage this gap, we need to give additional fellowship to these young faculty members. How to donate for instituting a Faculty Fellowship? An individual or Corporate may contribute through Debit Card/Credit Card/Net banking/Cheque/Dra /DBT. For more details, please visit the following link: https://iitk.ac.in/dora/givingback/young-faculty-fellowship What are the various tax benefits that can be availed by a donor? To know more about our tax benefits, please visit: https://iitk.ac.in/dora/givingback/donate/Annual-Giving What is the process for instituting a Young Faculty Fellowship? e faculty fellowship may be named a er either the donor or any other person that the donor may decide. e faculty fellowship could be open to all departments or meant for a specific department or a particular domain as per the wish of the donor. Ÿ Once the donation is received the details of the fellowship are sent for approval of the Director. Ÿ erea er the approved document is sent to the Board of Governors (BoG) meeting for approval. Ÿ Once the Board of Governors (BoG) approves the same the fellowship is formally established at the Institute. Ÿ Ÿ

YOUNG FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS CREATED IN MEMORY OF DR. PK KELKAR Dr. Purushottam Kashinath Kelakar (1909-1990) is best remembered as the founding director of IIT Kanpur, established in 1959. Born in Karnataka, he graduated in Physics from the Royal Institute of Science, Mumbai in 1931 and later obtained his Diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1934 from IISC, Bangalore. Pursuing his passion for studies, Dr. Kelakar earned his doctorate from the University of Liverpool under the guidance of Dr. J.C. Prescott. His association with IITs began in 1956 when he was appointed as the Planning O cer of IIT Bombay and later became its Deputy Director. In 1959 December, Dr. Kelkar was appointed as the first Director of IIT Kanpur. His vision was to establish an institute incorporating engineering curriculum based on science, humanities and social sciences, with faculty engaged in teaching and research. Dr. Kelkar was instrumental in forming a collaborative program between IITK and a consortium of nine American universities called the Kanpur IndoAmerican Program (KIAP) that played an important role in the development of the institute. He was appointed as the Director of IIT Bombay in 1970 where he brought in many key changes that led to the growth and expansion of the institute. To honor his immense contribution in the field of technical education, the Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan in 1969.
