KRISHAK BANDHU IDEI has successfully promoted the KB or Krishak Bandhu (Farmer's Friend) brand as a premium smallholder-friendly brand. All IDEI low-cost technologies are promoted under this registered trade mark. The KB logo combines the name, a 5 leaf branch to connote cultivation and yield and thereby, agricultural prosperity and four curved lines to indicate irrigation. The brand is well recognized and has come to symbolize good quality at a ordable prices.

CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE DEVICES At IDEI, we have introduced innovative, a ordable technologies that allow for year round irrigation and therefore cultivation in the hands of the smallholder farmers. These technologies reduce green house gas emissions in agriculture and contribute towards conserving water in agriculture as well. These technologies increase the resilience of the user farmers.

1. WATER APPLICATION DEVICES

IDEI's water application technologies are signiďŹ cantly low in cost, available in small packages, operate at very low pressure and are easy to operate. Since it does not require high initial cost it removes entry barrier for small farmers to adopt drip irrigation. A farmer can irrigate more crop area per unit of water used as it requires 60-70 percent less water when compared with traditional surface irrigation system. The slow and regular application of water maintains optimum moisture at the root zone which improves plant quality and yield increases by 3050%.

Low cost drip irrigation systems was a disruptive technology that completely transformed the way irrigation was practiced by poor farmers in the states that lie in South and West of India. The idea came from observing a farmer who was using string of used ice cream plastic wrappers as a drip irrigation technology.

IDEI decided to develop a technology that could break the entry barrier of cost for farmers. KB Low cost drip irrigation is one ďŹ fth the cost of commercially available drip systems and has till date enabled more than 400, 000 households (2.5 Million people) break the shackles of poverty.

1. WATER LIFTING DEVICES

IDEI’s water lifting technologies are characterized and are driven by human energy with a combination of lifting and pumping device. Delivery arrangements allow the water to be dropped into a channel or delivered under pressure into a pipe. All technologies provide rated water discharge (speciďŹ ed for each technology) and are reliable requiring least maintenance. There are no recurring costs. The technologies allow the farmer to lift water to his convenience without any need/ worry for storage. These technologies can be used to cultivate all types of crops. Since these are low on cost they can be easily a orded by the farmer.

The water lifting device was described as, “a little hen that lays golden eggsâ€?. It was thought of nothing less than a miracle. The water lifting device made its humble beginnings in Bangladesh. An initial model of foot operated irrigation device developed by one of the farmers of Bangladesh was a response to the problems they faced and therefore, was a perfect solution. IDEI (then IDE) worked closely and reďŹ ned the product and developed what came to be known as the Water lifting device.

As remarkable as the Water lifting device itself, are the marketing strategies employed to inform the smallholder farmers about the product and its usefulness. Over 1 Million households (more than 5 Million people) using Krishak Bandhu (KB) water lifting device in India are testimony to its usefulness.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES & PRODUCTS Enjoying year round cultivation and the disposable income generated through KB technologies smallholder farmers desired to take the next leap towards prosperity. Taking the cue, IDEI conducted rigorous constraint analysis across the value chain. Following the log jam approach, key constraints were narrowed down into three broad categories- input, throughput and the output stage. In response, interventions in the three key stages were developed and implemented.

The result shows in established Farmer Entrepreneurs we call the 'Service Entrepreneurs' or the 'Champion Women Entrepreneurs' who are on their way to become a 'one-stop shop' for the agri-needs of smallholder farmers in villages.

Water Storage Devices The water storage technologies are used in conjunction with the water application devices. In many semi arid areas, the brief monsoon season brings with it an abundance of water. However, this water is wasted and there is an acute shortage of water during the rest of the year when it is conducive to cultivate high-value vegetable crops and horticulture, especially when these crops fetch a remunerative price. Capturing rainwater and storing it for use during these months is not possible due to the high cost of storage structures. To provide low-cost storage for farmers IDEI has developed water storage bags of varying capacities.
