Indian Americans celebrate India opposes rights moves against Colombo Diwali with full fervor Perth: The biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) kicked off here Friday with the Indian delegation keeping a wary eye on efforts to set up a human rights monitor and prevent Sri Lanka from hosting the next meeting. Leaders of over 50 countries gathered for the event that was expected to focus on development issues, the global economic crisis and a host of other

concerns that affect members of the 54-nation grouping. The Indian delegation, headed by Vice President Hamid Ansari, was expected to voice its opposition to a voluminous report by an Eminent Persons Group which has, among other things, recommended the setting up of a Commissioner for Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights. New York: Indians across the Tristate area celebrated Diwali with full fervor this week. Even the lingering economic uncertainty could not dim the festival of lights. The five day festival - that starts with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dhuj - served as a perfect setting to plan family get-togethers.

Diwali itself fell right in the middle of the week, but the festivities continued with gusto. Wednesday was like any other working day, but as the day progressed, celebrations picked up at homes, temples, restaurants and even clubs.
