MISSION STATEMENT:
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

CAITLIN’s story
“Both my parents were addicts, and I missed out on two important lessons in life as a result: How to feel safe and how to have healthy relationships.”
Caitlin said she also never felt like she fit in anywhere. She did not belong. So, when she found a man who she thought was kind to her, she quickly found herself pregnant with twin boys after dating just a few short weeks.
“Suddenly, I was in an abusive relationship and in a domestic violence situation that left me terrified for my life and for my twins.” Luckily, Caitlin escaped, and began life with small twin boys, struggling to keep herself and them afloat.
It was a bright white and red Salvation Army bus that eventually brought Caitlin to a new life, complete with a commitment to God and becoming a Salvation Army soldier.
“Before I really knew about The Salvation Army, I kept my boys fed by going to the local Salvation Army food bank. But it was The Salvation Army school bus that made it all become real. My boys saw the bus at their school and saw all the kids running happily to go somewhere fun. They begged me to let them ride the bus too.”
Ultimately, Caitlin found The Salvation Army right around the corner and attended a local Harvest Fest. The boys loved the festival. They were so welcomed that they started attending church services. At the same time, Caitlin waited anxiously to receive word that her twins were accepted into the popular after-school programs.
“Now, if you ask my boys where they are the happiest in the world, they will say they love their life at The Salvation Army. For the first time in my life, I learned about love, and safety, and most of all, that we matter.”
Impact in King County in 2022
With inflation skyrocketing and more people going hungry, The Salvation Army is receiving record numbers of requests for food and support for the most basic family needs. Our food banks are struggling to keep up with the burgeoning demand for help as thousands appear at our doorsteps throughout our communities, many people now seeking assistance for the first time in their lives. More and more children are appearing - alone - as families shatter under the financial burden of trying to feed them. The Salvation Army focuses on each person and each family’s unique barriers to address the roots of their challenges. It is our mission to stand by those who turn to us for help during each phase of their personal journey, walking alongside them toward a better life.
153,410 people received life-saving services throughout King County
576,062 meals served to those in need
Our food banks and food distribution events are open to all, no qualifications or registration required
166,674 nights of safe shelter were provided to our homeless neighbors
Via partnerships with the City of Seattle and King County
2,462 families received utility and eviction prevention assistance
Keeping families in their homes is the best way to avoid homelessness

Alvaro’s story
“I fell in with a party crowd at a young age and I was lost for a very long time. I was in rehab by the age of seventeen and went through a number of rehab stints before I completed The Salvation Army’s addiction recovery program. I couldn’t find my way to my purpose for living and I couldn’t seem to shake the addiction. Despite growing up with loving, supportive parents who never gave up on me, I was close to the end of my life several times.”
Alvaro’s mother prayed over him many times. She one day told him that he had to go to The Salvation Army for help.
“I thought not being a believer made me cool and edgy. When I went into the six-month addiction recovery program with the army, I was most afraid of the Christianity part. Turns out that Jesus was working in that program the whole time.”
Alvaro is now giving back in a big way. He works as an office manager and marketing coordinator at a lively and spirited corps with his dog Rose by his side 24/7, providing healing pets to everyone she meets. Alvaro recently helped a gentleman find a pair of pants when he appeared at the White Center corps soaking wet.
“I helped this gentleman just get a pair of dry pants and I couldn’t believe how that made him feel – to be cared for. Life is life, and there’s never a single day that it can’t be unbearably hard, but the more I stay on the path of sobriety, the more I realize I never thought I could be this happy. That is all from finding real salvation here.”

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 when William Booth decided to take his ministry into the streets of London where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute. Today, his mission continues throughout the world. With the growing need to help our vulnerable neighbors comes a greater responsibility to ensure that every dollar we give to important organizations is utilized to service those in need. The more I come to know the good and humble people of The Salvation Army, the more impressed I become with the profound and permanent way they devote every resource to direct client care. It matters to me that I know, with complete certainty, that the people of The Salvation Army treat everyone with dignity, compassion, and acceptance - regardless of where they are on their journey of hardship. The Salvation Army is certainly one of the most trustworthy and competent organizations that serve our most vulnerable: that is why I support it.

Robert’s story
“I got desperately ill with diabetes and became hospitalized for a long period of time. I went from being employed and able to keep my kids in Nikes, to being without a job, without a home, and with a massive medical bill.”
Robert found himself living with his children and his elderly mother in her tiny house that was just down the street from a Salvation Army food bank that was open every day. Upon moving in with his mother, Robert found that she had almost no food in her house. “I thought I was going to be able to return to work eventually, but my mother needed food, so I started going to the food bank for her. When I couldn’t support my family anymore, we all had to move in with her. At one point, we had my entire family living there with no means to buy food for that many people.”
Robert and his children did try other food banks around the community, but it was a hardship to travel to multiple locations and juggle the distribution schedule to get enough food for five people. The Salvation Army food bank that was open every day reassured Robert that he could at least feed his family, and despite being extremely weak, he went every day. “It meant our entire family was saved, because I knew we could all at least eat.”
“Some people say it so easily…something or someone saved my life! The difference with The Salvation Army is that they saved my life because they gave me a life that is worth saving.”
11
“I can truly say my life was saved by The Salvation Army.”
– Robert

Doing my part to help fulfill The Salvation Army’s mission to love God and serve others wherever and whenever possible has been my continuing goal, to pay forward and bring Christian love, hope and comfort to the people we are able to serve. The army has been a saving grace in my life and I want to continue to share in bringing that saving grace to others.
I worked for The Salvation Army for over thirty years, and I often witnessed the healing and dignity brought to every neighbor and client. Now, more than ever, the Christian work and spirit of the army is needed in this world. I have an abiding respect for the way that financial giving profoundly improves the lives of others and I am confident that as the army continues to stand by its biblical Christian values, it will also use every monthly donation or legacy gift wisely; where it is most needed and can be trusted to use every dollar to do the most good.
