Athletic Handbook

Dear parents and student athletes, We would like to welcome you to the Tattnall Square Academy athletic program! We believe that participation in sports provides a wealth of opportunities and experiences that assist students in personal growth and development. Tattnall Square Academy believes in the development of young men and women through athletics. We feel that a properly structured, well-organized sports program meets students’ needs for self-expression, mental alertness, and physical growth. It is our pledge to maintain a program that is sound in purpose and will further each student’s educational maturity. Likewise, we believe that parents have committed themselves to certain responsibilities and obligations to the student athlete. We would like to take this opportunity to familiarize you with specific policies necessary for a well organized athletic program. It is the role of the Athletic Department to make rules governing interscholastic competition. These rules need broad based community support to be fully effective. This is best achieved through mutual communication between the Athletic Department, the student athletes, and the parents of our student athletes. One way that we have committed to accomplishing this objective is through this athletic handbook for students, parents, and coaches. The most important reason that our department exists is to ensure that students have an opportunity to partake in and enjoy sports during their time at Tattnall Square Academy. As an Athletic Department, we can assure you that students and the teams which they are a part are the guiding force in everything we do and every decision that we make. Our focus and primary objective—in making this handbook and in all that we do—will always be to do what is in the best interest of the students and their teams. This combination will ensure a promising and successful future for Tattnall Square Academy athletics. Thank you for taking the time to read the athletic handbook. It will not only allow you to become familiar with our policies and procedures, but also allow for a smooth transition for you as a new or continued member of the Tattnall Square Academy athletic program. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any member of the Tattnall Square Academy Athletic Department. GO TROJANS! Joey Hiller Director of Athletics

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW PHILOSOPHY The Athletic Department at Tattnall Square Academy is an important part of our school’s educational program. We want to ensure that each student athlete reaches his or her maximum potential. It is our mission to develop the whole student, not just the athlete, in mind, body and spirit. Specifically, the athletic department seeks to provide interested students with the opportunity to participate in its program of interscholastic athletics and is committed to the following: • • • • • • • •

To offer a well balanced and varied program of interscholastic athletics To teach the value of competition To foster the development of athletic skills To encourage the development of a strong work ethic, self-discipline, and self-sacrifice To teach the value of commitment, teamwork, and cooperation To encourage the development of judgment, character, and leadership To teach the value of ethical conduct, sportsmanship, and fair play To encourage the development of loyalty and pride in one’s self, one’s team, and the school community

The Athletic Department expects the following of each participant in the school athletic program: • • • • • • • •

4

To be a worthy representative of teammates, coaches, and the school community, abiding by school and community expectations To maintain health and fitness levels by following the training rules prescribed by the coach To reflect the knowledge that commitment to victory is nothing without commitment to hard work in practice To understand that athletics is just one part in the big picture with the cornerstone being that a Tattnall Square Academy student strives to achieve excellence in all areas To learn to deal with adversity in an honorable way and to capitalize on growth opportunities To express feelings intelligently and appropriately To accept the responsibilities of team membership: support of teammates, cooperation, positive interaction, and mutual respect To help student athletes learn to balance a demanding academic schedule with a rigorous athletic training schedule

VISION STATEMENT The vision statement defines the clear and inspirational long-term goals that result from Tattnall Square Academy Athletic Department’s work. Our student athletes graduate prepared to make an impact on society. Equipping student athletes to impact society in a meaningful way

MISSION STATEMENT The mission statement is Tattnall’s expression of its Athletic Department’s purpose. It focuses and guides our programs. Our statement communicates to everyone involved and gives us a shared understanding of our intended direction. Our mission is to provide excellent programs, grounded in Christian faith. Through rigorous training and competition, we prepare our teams for success, while inspiring a passion for Christ within a culture of competition and character.

CULTURE Culture is the expression of a program’s values, attitudes, and goals about practice, competition, and relationships. It determines the focus and direction of the department and its members. Championship culture impacts directly the areas that affect team functioning, behavior, and performance. The purpose of culture is to drive behaviors that lead to success.

SUCCESS Success and winning are not synonymous since winning depends on many factors. However, our athletes are in complete control of their success. We urgently strive to win championships, and because of that effort, we will be successful in our relationship with Christ, with family, academically, and athletically. Success is becoming more than you thought you could be by dedicating your best for the desired outcome of the team.

VALUES and BELIEFS Values are concepts, standards, ideas, and beliefs. Our values demonstrate what the Tattnall Athletic Department represents and helps create a set of shared behaviors which will be distinguishable in the community. Each day we enforce our values in practices, games, workouts, and meetings. 1. ATTITUDE and EFFORT Attitude: confident, energetic, intense, passionate, spirited, committed Effort: relentless, urgent, purposeful, deliberate, intentional 2. BEST IS THE STANDARD Expect perfection and accept only excellence. We are dedicated and committed to winning championships. 3. WIN THE DAY Weight room, practice, workout, conditioning, fundamentals, game, classroom, training, test, meeting, and life. Whatever it is - Win it! 4. WETEAMUS Tattnall athletes value devotion to the team and to the school.

Leaders create culture. Culture drives behavior. Behavior produces results. “While values are abstract, behaviors are concrete. They are actions we can actually see. When we describe our culture in terms of the behaviors we want to see taking place each day, it resonates with people in a way that influences their actions. As leaders, defining the behaviors gives us the tools and the opportunities to teach and reinforce what Tattnall Square Academy is looking for. That is what creating and driving a culture is all about – our athletes and staff consistently performing the Tattnall way.” - Joey Hiller, Director of Athletics

Athletic Handbook

ANTHEM POLICIES Tattnall Square Academy student athletes will always respect Christ and our nation’s flag. During any prayer, the student athlete will remain standing still and silent with his or her head bowed until the completion of the prayer. During the national anthem, student athletes will “Win the Anthem” by standing still and silent with their right hand over their heart until the music stops playing. They will face the flag. In the absence of a flag, they will face the direction of the music. Blatant disrespect to these policies will result in student athletes being ineligible to participate in that event. A meeting will be held with the student athlete, the parents, the head coach, and the Athletic Director.

APPAREL Student athletes are expected to purchase and wear sports specific or school specific practice gear for all practices. The coach will communicate to the players and parents prior to the beginning of the season. Online stores will be set up for each sport where required purchases will be made. All game safety equipment must be worn during practices and games. This is a shared responsibility of the coach and student athlete. Failure to bring necessary equipment or uniform may result in the student athlete not participating in the practice or game. The head coach will give further instructions regarding required practice gear. It is our highest recommendation that all parents and student athletes strongly consider wearing mouth guards during contact sports contests and practices. Tattnall Square Academy student athletes are expected to represent the school properly at all times and at all required events, practices, and games, as well as voluntary workouts on our campus. Male athletes will not be shirtless. Female athletes will not be in a sports bra only or in “Nike Pro” style compression shorts only, unless that is the standard game uniform worn in competition. We will represent Tattnall the right way at all times at all events.

BOOSTER CLUBS GOLDEN TROJANS

Golden Trojans is the Athletic Department wide booster organization for Tattnall Square Academy. It is a volunteer organization made up of dedicated and service-oriented parents who are committed to offering their time and energy to promote school and athletic spirit, support Tattnall Square Academy sports teams and ensure the success of every athletic event. In addition to volunteering time, Golden Trojans also provides funds to enhance all Tattnall Square Academy sports teams and their facilities. The Tattnall Square Academy student athletes and coaches benefit directly from the volunteer and financial support of Golden Trojans, and we encourage all Tattnall Square Academy parents to join.

Since 1988, the Golden Trojan parent organization has existed for the sole purpose of raising money for the athletic programs at Tattnall Square Academy. Athletic programs require a tremendous amount of capital each year. With improvements and upgrades, the maintenance of these programs and their facilities is costly. The family membership dues are $250 and include two passes for all regular season athletic events as well as one reserved parking permit for all home football and soccer games. The single parent/single grandparent membership dues are $200 and include one pass for all regular season athletic events as well as one reserved parking permit for all home football and soccer games. Both memberships include a special thank you gift to proudly display your support for Tattnall Square Academy as a Golden Trojan. For your enjoyment, Golden Trojan hosts two socials each year for fellowship with other members who give generously to support Tattnall athletics. Golden Trojan members are listed in the sport media guides throughout the year. To become a member of Golden Trojans, please use this link: http://bit.ly/1920GoldenTrojan PURPOSE The purpose of this organization shall be to raise funds to: • make capital improvements to the athletic facilities of Tattnall Square Academy. • purchase items for the Athletic Department that are too costly for regular funding sources. • assist the athletic program by funding special projects. • promote the welfare of Tattnall Square Academy and its athletic programs. MEMBERSHIP The membership of this club shall consist of families and supporters of Tattnall Square Academy who pay the annual membership dues. SPORTS BOOSTER CLUBS Each sport at Tattnall Square Academy has the option to have its own booster organization to supplement funds that the school and Golden Trojans will contribute. Booster clubs are intended to ease the financial burden of the families and school and to raise the necessary funds to maintain a positive experience for all student athletes.

CLASSWORK On occasion when student athletes must miss class to participate in scheduled athletic events, they are responsible for turning in class work that is due that day, and they are responsible for making up any missed work in a timely fashion. If a student athlete arrives home late from an athletic contest or misses class the day before a test due to an athletic contest, it is at the teacher’s discretion to allow the student athlete to test at an alternative time. If the student athlete must leave class early on a testing day due to an athletic contest, it is the responsibility of the student athlete to reschedule the test for a date that is agreed upon by the student athlete and teacher.

CLUB/SELECT/TRAVEL/RECREATION TEAMS Tattnall Square Academy athletics will take precedence over club or league competitions and practice sessions. Student athletes will not be excused from Tattnall Square Academy athletic practices or games to attend games or practice sessions for club/league/travel/recreation teams. It is the responsibility of the student athlete to communicate his or her participation on those teams prior to the start of the season so that any potential conflicts may be resolved. Failure to communicate before the season may result in the dismissal of a student athlete from the team.

COMMUNICATION Our coaches believe that an open line of communication is vital to the health of the Tattnall Square Academy Athletic Department. In meetings with parents and student athletes, coaches will be available to discuss any topic that pertains directly to that student athlete and will not discuss any other student athlete. The focus of the conversation will be to educate all parties and construct a situation that improves the team and individual student athlete. It is appropriate for parents to contact the coach with concerns about their son or daughter’s behavior, their skill development, and for physical treatment advice. Parent Meeting: The coaches for each sport during the three sports seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring) will hold a parent meeting prior to the first game. Parents are encouraged to attend. The meeting will allow parents to meet the coach, ask questions, and receive all pertinent information about the season. Communication Tools: Coaches will communicate regularly with parents and student athletes in person, via email, or by phone. The coach will provide a contact number for parents and student athletes to use in the case of an emergency ONLY. Tattnall Square Academy communicates via SMS notifications through the Remind app. Each head coach is responsible for setting this up with his or her student athletes and their parents. An athlete group and a parent group is recommened for all levels.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION CONCERNS OR ISSUES: Step1: One of the greatest opportunities for student athletes is learning skills for effective conflict resolution. When there is a concern, student athletes are encouraged to speak with their coach directly. It can be very satisfying for all parties involved when student athletes and coaches are able to find mutually agreeable solutions for an issue that they are attempting to resolve. Step 2: If the coach and student athlete are unable to resolve the issue together, then parents may contact the coach. If a parent has a concern to discuss with the coach, the parent should contact the coach at an appropriate time for both parties. An upset parent should wait at least 24 hours before approaching a coach or parent after an athletic event. Under no circumstances should a parent approach a coach or another parent in a harsh manner or immediately before, during, or immediately after a practice or a game. Taking this time to reflect on the situation, as well as honest and respectful communication, should allow for more effective dialogue ensuring a more successful experience for everyone. Step 3: If the discussion with the coach does not resolve the issue, parents and coaches may contact the Athletic Director to discuss the situation. Step 4: If the Athletic Director is unable to provide a satisfactory resolution, the parent may contact the appropriate administrator (John Hankinson ‐Head of School).

DROPPING/DISMISSAL FROM A SPORT Sometimes student athletes make the decision to leave a sport before, during, or after the season, although we highly discourage it. Whatever the reason, a student athlete must follow the steps listed below: 1.

The student athlete must talk to the coach to see if a solution can be reached.

2. A conference with the parents, student athlete, coach, and Athletic Director may be required and is highly recommended before a student athlete leaves the sport. 3. If a student athlete leaves the sport, all equipment must be turned in clean and undamaged. The student athlete must pay for any equipment not turned in. 4. Any student athlete who quits a sport may be ruled ineligible for that student’s next sport season. This decision will be made by the Athletic Director.

Athletic Handbook

DUAL PARTICIPATION

Tattnall Square Academy will encourage in-season dual sports participation. There are some guidelines that must be adhered to for this to be successfully achieved and meet the best interests of all involved parties. •

Each dual sport in-season participant MUST declare a primary sport. Events for the primary sport will take priority over the secondary or tertiary sport.

•

Competitions will supersede practices. Practices will supersede Workouts. Workouts will supersede meetings. When there is a game/competition conflict between sports, the athlete will attend the primary sport event.

•

Team sports will prioritize over individual sports unless the athlete has specifically declared the individual sport as his or her primary.

•

Dual participation will be allowed between two team sports within the same season when an agreement is reached between the head coaches, Athletic Director, and athlete and his or her family.

•

A contract will be signed by all parties for any dual participation student athlete at a meeting between the head coaches, athletic director, student athletes, and parents.

ELIGIBILITY

Participation in athletics is a privilege, NOT a right. Students can earn the privilege through hard work, dedication, desire, and self-discipline. All students currently enrolled in grades 6-12 and attend Tattnall Square Academy are eligible to participate in athletics. All students in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate in middle school sports. All students in 9-12 are eligible to participate in high school sports. No student in grades 6-7 will be eligible to participate in high school sports per GHSA rules. Students in grade 8 will be allowed to participate in JV sports (other than football) per GHSA rules. Academic Eligibility: Varsity and JV: Tattnall Square Academy will use the standards set forth by the GHSA regarding student eligibility. Students must earn the equivalent of 5 credits toward graduation per semester to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities the following semester. This rule is applied to all students in grades 9-12 and any eighth grade student on a junior varsity team. Students who do not receive credit for the equivalent of 5 classes that count toward graduation may not practice, play, or try out. At the 4.5 week mark of each grading period (9 weeks) the Athletic Director will check grades of student athletes in grades 9-12 and report to each head coach the status of any student athlete who needs extra academic assistance. Any student athlete who is in danger of becoming academically ineligible by GHSA criteria will have a mandatory 7:30 a.m. study hall for a two week period. Grades will be re-evaluated at that time. If insufficient improvement is made, a meeting will be held with the head coach, Athletic Director, student athlete, and parents. Eligibility for middle school extra-curricular activities will be based on a student’s grades during the 4.5 week mark. Any student in grades 6-8 must be passing 5 or more classes at every 4.5 week mark to be eligible to participate the following 4.5 week time period. Students not passing at the 4.5 week time period may not practice or play, but will be allowed to try out.

Usage of our facilities by non-Tattnall teams on Sundays is prohibited.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION

Although the school pays for most of the cost associated with the athletic program, some sports, by nature, require specialized equipment or uniforms for which the cost is shared between the school and the parents of the student athletes. Head coaches, in conjunction with the Athletic Director, will make parents aware of the required purchases necessary several months before the beginning of the season.

HOLIDAYS In order for teams to remain cohesive, effective, and competitive, student athletes may be expected to play and/or practice during non-religious holidays (i.e., Labor Day, Christmas Holidays, Spring Break, Summer Break, etc.) time periods. These dates and times will be announced by the coach as early as possible in an effort to allow families to plan accordingly. If there is any question and the dates have not been announced, please contact the coach and/or Athletic Director. He or she will not be required to play and/or practice on a day of religious observation.

ILLNESS AND INJURY All injuries should be reported to the coach and/or athletic director at the time they occur so further injury can be avoided. If you are injured, remember the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Tell the coach and/or Athletic Director that you are injured before leaving the court/floor. No matter how small the injury, get treatment. No one shall miss practice without a doctor’s permission. Student athletes are expected to attend team practices each day they attend school. A second notice from the doctor should be given to the coach to end physical restrictions. Anyone who becomes sick, nauseated, dizzy, and/or very hot should notify the coach and/or Athletic Director immediately.

Head coaches should fill out an online form for each injury at http://bit.ly/TSAinjuryreport immediately after the event when a student athlete must see a doctor or the athletic trainer.

LETTERING

High school varsity student athletes have the opportunity to earn a varsity letter based on their participation in competitive athletics. Athletic Handbook Please note the following as it applies to lettering: • • • • •

A student receives a letter according to participation in a particular event. A student receives a service bar for each year lettering after the intial letter has been achieved. Seniors who have participated in a varsity sport without lettering previously will receive a letter for that sport during their senior year. The Athletic Director and head coach may decide that a student athlete has earned the right to letter and award that letter regardless of if the student athlete meets the specified criteria. Student athletes who have played on a varsity team and earned a varsity letter are eligible to purchase a Tattnall Square Academy letter jacket. The purchase of the letter jacket is arranged through the Athletic Director and Neff. This meeting is held toward the end of each sport season.

LOCKER ROOMS All Tattnall Square Academy students athletes in grades 6-12 will have access to a locker room for dressing before and after practices. Coaches will lock the locker rooms before leaving for practice and will reopen the locker rooms when returning from practice. The student athletes are encouraged not to bring valuables and personal items into the locker room. The Athletic Department, coaches, or Athletic Director are not responsible for lost or stolen items (uniforms, equipment, school issued materials, or personal items) that are in the locker room or surrounding athletic facilities.

MULTISPORT ATHLETES

Tattnall Square Academy believes in a holistic approach to athletics. We strive to develop athletes who participate in multiple sports. Such participation not only develops the individual, but also intimately connects the Athletic Department and helps the school compete at the highest level in all sports. There will be times between the fall sports season/winter sports season and the winter sports season/spring sports season in which athletes may be transitioning from one sport to the next with some overlap. Tattnall Square Academy will use the following guidelines and policies with these situations. •

Each head coach, in conjunction with the Athletic Director, will set a policy for student athletes who play in overlapping seasons.

•

Practices and workouts for the next season’s sport will never be mandatory for athletes of the sport that is in-season. It is up to each athlete and their family whether or not they choose to participate in the next season’s sport practices and workouts.

•

PLAYING TIME/TEAM SELECTION It is our goal in team selection to find opportunities not only for participation, but also more importantly, for success. Placing athletes at the level where they can contribute physically and gain positive feelings from their efforts is important to the coaching staff. Disappointments are inevitable when teams are selected, and it is important that student athletes feel the support of teammates, parents, and coaches. We believe in our coaches. Their jobs are to manage and direct a specific sport. Their responsibilities include evaluating and selecting students for teams, as well as determining the degree to which each student athlete will participate, and they do this with considerable thought and sensitivity. During the selection process, coaches will evaluate skill level, athleticism, physical conditioning, positional play, trainability, punctuality, and various other attributes. We want our student athletes to learn the value of being on a team and to know the contribution each must make. Team members have a responsibility to themselves, their teammates, and their coaches to learn and perform their roles on the team. Teamwork requires the development of interpersonal skills such as listening, following directions, accepting constructive criticism, communication, being respectful, and supporting teammates and coaches. Student athletes have an obligation to participate in practice sessions and games with full commitment and enthusiasm. Tattnall Square Academy Athletics believes that at all levels—sixth grade through varsity—playing time in competition is earned in practice and is not an entitlement. Regardless of the subjective nature of the process and the potential for disagreement, the coach is the only one in a position to make team selections and decisions about playing time. Members of a varsity team are not guaranteed playing time. Student athletes should fully understand that by joining a team they are accepting the pleasures and benefits of participating as well as the responsibility and commitment to that team. Coaches will be willing to discuss any and all situations with parents.

PRACTICES

Middle School: Practice will start at 3:30 p.m. for all middle school sports and will last until 5:00-5:30 p.m. High School: The head coach of each sport, in conjunction with the Athletic Director, will determine the team practice schedule. Saturday practices should be expected and will be determined and communicated by the coach. Tattnall Square Academy athletic teams do not practice or play on Sunday. Permission must be granted from the Athletic Director to hold any Sunday event, including but not limited to workouts, practices, and meetings. These events will not be mandatory. There may be circumstances where practice times require adjustment. In those cases, parents and student athletes will be notified in advance of the change in day and/or times. Varsity or junior varsity practices will start at 4:00 p.m. and last until 6:00-6:30 p.m. Practices will be held rain or shine unless the coach and/or Athletic Director cancels the practice or game. Student athletes are expected to attend all practices as scheduled by the head coach and Athletic Director. Clay Target, Track, Golf, Tennis, and Swimming will have special practice schedules due to the nature of the sport and/or practice facility availability. These schedules will be communicated by the coach prior to the season. Head coaches will email parents on Sundays with practice dates and times, game dates and times, dismissal times, addresses to away events, and transportation information.

Athletic Handbook

PRACTICE/GAME CANCELLATIONS In the event that the coach must cancel a practice, it is the responsibility of the coach and/or Athletic Director to notify the team and parents. Inclement weather does not determine whether practice will be held—the coach makes the determination. When available, indoor facilities may be used to hold practice in these circumstances. If a change is made in the practice schedule, parents and student athletes will be notified as soon as possible. In most cases, it is the responsibility of the host school to make decisions regarding game cancellations When hosting an event, Tattnall Square Academy will make every effort to make cancellation decisions by 2:00 p.m. on the day of the event. When a game is cancelled, the coach may choose to hold a practice instead. If the coach chooses to hold a practice in place of the cancelled game, he/she will communicate this information to the parents and student athletes as soon as possible.

PRESEASON/SUMMER REQUIREMENTS GHSA governs the start and end date for all sports practices. All candidates for high school teams are expected to be in attendance at all summer and preseason workouts as stipulated by head coaches. Any conflict in schedules will be cleared with the head coach. The Athletic Director and head coaches will work closely to set policies for preseason and summer requirements.

RELIGIOUS COMMITMENTS Tattnall Square Academy understands that from time to time a student athlete may need to miss practice or game to fulfill religious obligations. Student athletes should discuss their religious commitments with the coach prior to season so that he or she is aware of the religious commitments in advance. Any student athlete missing practice or a game due to a religious commitment is still subject to the same standards as the other student athletes.

The Athletic Director is expected to provide appropriate instruction and support to all part time and full time coaches. He or she must also be a positive representative of Tattnall Square Academy and the Athletic Department.

Athletic Handbook Assistant Athletic Director: The Assistant Athletic Director works in partnership with the Athletic Director to maintain, organize, and administer the overall athletic program and ensures compliance with conference and school policies, rules, and regulations. He or she may help with managing coaches as well as share responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Department of Athletics. His or her duties include but are not limited to: compiling, maintaining and updating game and practice schedules, coordinating transportation and officials, and assisting with event planning to tournaments, athletic banquets, senior nights, sports pictures, and any other necessary events. Additionally, he or she will attend and supervise athletic events, manage athletics related communication material and media relations, and assist in other areas as needed.

Coaches: The coach is responsible for creating a competitive, safe, and challenging environment in which his or her student athletes will receive a high level of instruction and competition. The coach is also responsible for confirming game and bus schedules, scheduling officials, turning in a roster prior to the season, distributing and collecting uniforms and equipment, completing game, injury and/or incident reports, and communicating with parents. The coach must also ensure that student athletes are exhibiting good behavior at school, in the community, and at all Tattnall Square Academy athletic events. Coaches are expected to be a positive representative of Tattnall Square Academy and the Athletic Department. This includes ensuring that coaches conducts themselves in a manner that will bring honor and respect to our teams and school. They are expected to make decisions based on the collective interest of the team, while also developing each student athlete to his or her fullest potential. The coach must be clear in expectations and available to student athletes for positive mentorship on and off the field or court. He or she is expected to maintain high personal standards, motivate the players, and promote sportsmanship at all times.

Any coach who is ejected from a game will automatically be suspended from the next athletic contest and will be required to pay the GHSA fee associated with the ejection. Community Coaches: A community coach is defined by the GHSA as someone who is a non-professional and is not fully employed by the school but has the role and function of a coach. They are required to pass the GHSA courses in Sports First Aid and Principles of Coaches, as well as the Concussion in Sports video workshop and sports-specific rules clinics that are mandatory for all coaches. All Tattnall Square Academy requirements for coaching apply to community coaches in the same manner as they do to full-time employees.

20

Athletic Handbook Student athlete: The student athlete is expected to be a positive addition to the Tattnall Square Academy Athletic Department. If a student athlete must discuss an issue with the coach, he or she must communicate in a respectful manner to try and find a solution. If a situation cannot be reached, the Athletic Director may assist. Student athletes will be representing Tattnall Square Academy on and off the playing court or field and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect positively upon our program and school. Student athletes are expected to be respectful and exhibit good behavior in class, in practice, in games, and in the community. If a student athlete fails to conduct him or herself in a manner that will bring honor and respect to our teams and school, he or she may be subject to penalties which may include game suspensions, ineligibility, or dismissal from the team. All student athletes will abide by the rules set forth in this handbook as well as the Tattnall Square Academy Student/Parent Handbook. Each sports program, in conjuction witht he approval of the Athletic Director, may have its own rules that are more strict than the Student/Parent Handbook. Coaches will clearly communicate these rules to the student athletes and parents. Any player who is ejected from a game will automatically be suspended for the number of athletic contests stipulated in the GHSA Constitution and By-Laws and subject to pay the GHSA ejection fee.

Parents: Parents play a vital role in the Tattnall Square Academy athletics program. Parents model attitudes and behavior for their children. We invite all parents to attend home and away games, support the team, and encourage their children to practice and play hard. We are so appreciative of the assistance parents provide for their children in their athletic endeavors, whether driving them to an athletic event, volunteering as a member of the Booster Club, or sacrificing family time to accommodate athletic schedules. We also appreciate the support parents provide our coaches in their efforts to create a valuable athletic experience for all participants. It is important for parents to be mindful of and respect what the coaches are trying to do by avoiding interference or public criticism, especially in front of their children, other teammates, community members, or on social media. In regards to games, parents are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will bring honor and respect to our teams and school. At no time should a parent display inappropriate behavior toward an official, coach, administrator, or student athlete. Any spectator or parent who acts in a disruptive manner will cause a game to be suspended until the situation is resolved or the spectator is removed. If a spectator/parent is removed, then the parent will face the same suspension penalty as a coach/player for the sport from which ejected.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Student athletes and staff members are asked to use discretion when participating in social networking avenues. For good or for bad, student athletes are always “on the clock” when it comes to representing Tattnall Square Academy and its programs. Student athletes are representatives of Tattnall Square Academy and can be in the public eye more so than other students. Assume anything posted on a personal account could be read by Tattnall’s staff, teammates, classmates, opposing teams, recruits, alumni, parents or other family members, media members, current employers, future employers, and coaches. What is social media? Social media connects people in various corners of the world, helping to build relationships through social interaction using highly accessible communication techniques. Best practices: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Remember that the Internet is permanent. Avoid posting offensive or inappropriate language, pictures, videos, or comments. Ensure content posted on these sites does not depict inappropriate, or illegal activities. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t say in a public forum when representing Tattnall, or anything you wouldn’t say to the media. Be in the right state of mind when you make a post - don’t post when you’re angry or your judgment is impaired in any way. Check your privacy settings. It is recommended that the strongest security settings be used for Facebook, and that student athletes have “protected tweets” on Twitter, wherein only approved followers will be able to view tweets. Never post your home address, local address, phone number(s), birth date or other personal information. You could be a target of predators. For additional safety measures, it is recommended that student athletes do not include their location in Facebook posts and tweets. Understand that anything posted online is available to anyone in the world - any content placed online becomes the property of the site(s) and is completely out of your control the moment it is placed online, even if you limit access to your page. Ensure any information placed on the website(s) does not violate Tattnall Square Academy, Athletic Department or student athlete codes of conduct. Do not comment on athlete injuries, rosters, playbooks, officiating, or any other team information that should be kept confidential. Student athletes and their parents are asked to keep everything positive on all social media accounts. Student athletes could face discipline and even dismissal for violations of team, department, school, or GHSA policies.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND HAZING

Any student athlete found to be in violation of the school’s substance abuse policy will automatically be suspended from all team activities including practice, games, tournaments, dinners, etc., while the reported offense is under review by the coach, Athletic Director, and school administrator. Tattnall Square Academy Athletic Department reserves the right to impose any disciplinary action or other condition which it considers in its discretion, appropriate to the circumstances of any violation. This may include suspension from the athletic team for the remainder of season, as well as expulsion from the athletic program or school for the remainder of the school year.

Athletic Handbook Tattnall Square Academy forbids any form of hazing. Hazing is defined as any forced, required, intentional or negligent action, situation or activity which recklessly places any person at risk of physical injury, mental distress or personal indignity, or which encourages violation of any federal, state, local, or school law for the purpose of initiation into, or affiliation with, any organization affiliated with Tattnall Square Academy. This applies regardless of the willingness of the participant. Hazing, with or without the consent of a student, is prohibited by Tattnall Square Academy and a violation of that prohibition renders both the person inflicting the hazing and the person submitting to the hazing subject to discipline.

TEAM MEMBERSHIP Middle School (6-8 grade): Tattnall Square Academy is committed to providing all middle school students interested in competitive athletics the opportunity to participate. Failure to attend tryouts or abusing their privilege of participation, can lead to disqualification from the team. We recognize that middle school athletics provides the introduction to competitive sports at Tattnall Square Academy. Because it is important to have players learn the fundamentals correctly from the beginning, the emphasis of the middle school program will be developing skills and habits. The level of success achieved in high school athletics is directly related to the skills developed through the middle school program. Student athletes in fifth grade are not allowed to participate in middle school athletics. However, if the number of 6-8 graders is not sufficient to field a middle school team, the Athletic Director will determine if fifth grade participation is allowed on a case-by-case basis.. High School (9-12 grade): All teams may have player limits set forth by the Athletic Director and/or head coach. If tryouts are held, failure to attend can lead to disqualification from the selection process. High school student athletes will be held to a very high standard of excellence in all areas. It is an honor to be on a varsity sports teams’ roster. Abusing the privilege of participation or failure to meet the financial obligations of the sport or tuition can result in dismissal from the team.

TRAVEL

In most cases, Tattnall Square Academy will provide transportation to away contests. All players are expected to travel with their team to the competition site. If a student athlete will not be returning to the TSA campus with the team, verbal or written permission must be granted by parents and given to the coach before leaving the TSA campus. STUDENT ATHLETES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE GROUP WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN A PARENT UNLESS PARENTAL PERMISSION IS RECEIVED. Varsity teams periodically have overnight trips during the regular season or post-season tournaments. Hotel and transportation arrangements are made by the head coach and the Athletic Director. The nature of team travel will require implementing room curfews, limiting or denying student athlete separation from the group, and defining appropriate dress and behavior while our student athletes are representing our school. School rules are in effect when team travel occurs. Whether in or out of town, on or off the field or court, TSA student athletes are expected to uphold the highest standards of decorum. For any travel destination that is within a 45 minute radius from Tattnall Square Academy, players who can drive will be allowed to transport themselves with parental consent. Coaches will be responsible for communicating transportation plans with the parents.
