INSIDE THE SQUARE
MISSION: Our mission is to provide an exceptional collegepreparatory education, grounded in Christian faith. We partner with families to develop the disciplines for lifelong success, while inspiring a passion to glorify God in all that we do. EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: A Tattnall Square Academy education is based on the conviction that each young person has inherent, God-given talents and interests of great worth. We foster those gifts and interests and grow them into passionate and meaningful pursuits in the classroom, on the field, on the stage and throughout the local and global community. AFTER
TWO YEARS AGO, we kicked off a 50th
Anniversary Campaign to honor our past and to plan for our future. There were five different projects and upgrades that we focused on for the campaign. THANKS TO YOU, WE WERE ABLE TO RAISE $344,012.15 IN GIFTS AND PLEDGES! While the amount of giving
is a wonderful story in itself, the truly important story is what YOUR generosity will mean for Tattnall Square Academy. More than just a story of dollars and gifts, your generosity is the story of CREATING OPPORTUNITY for Tattnall’s incredible and eager students and for the dedicated and talented women and men on Tattnall’s faculty, who teach, inspire, and nurture our students.
AFTER
So far, we’ve been able to complete several projects, while others will be ongoing over the next few years. In summer of 2019, we were able to remove the old buzzing lights in Trojan Hall and upgrade the theater lighting to LED. The TSA Cafe, also known as the cafeteria, received an update when all of the 20 year old furniture was replaced with beautiful new seating and tables. Some unique features in the cafeteria now are the booths that anchor the center of the lunchroom along with a couple of large high top tables. Due to circumstances outside TSA’s control, the condition of the track had deteriorated much earlier than expected resulting in the inability to use the track for competitive meets. As safety remains in the forefront of our efforts, overhauling the track was a priority. Completed at the end of the summer, the project included foundational work to the surface, striping and other similar processes.

PE GYM
Over the years the P.E. gym has been the home for basketball games and pep rallies. Currently, it is used for all elementary P.E. classes as well as the home court for some middle school basketball games and some special events, such as Grandparents’ Day.This gym is in a high traffic area and requires refurbishment to showcase its history. Renovation needs include paint, insulation, and flooring. To ensure the safety of our Trojans, we have added these upgrades to our Golden Anniversary Campaign efforts. These efforts will be finished as pledges are completed.
BEFORE
STUDENT FURNITURE- CLASSROOMS
Next, we will turn our focus to replacing all of the student desks and chairs in the classrooms. Understandably, classroom furniture receives a great deal of wear and tear throughout the year. To ensure the safety of our students, we plan to replace all the desks in middle and upper school classrooms. Desks have already been replaced in the upper elementary grades, and future plans for the lower school include purchasing all new chairs for those classrooms. This will be an ongoing project until all rooms are equipped. TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT
Children learn more effectively when the tools of technology are incorporated into their lessons, and educational institutions now require robust systems to support every aspect of operations. Our goal is to implement a comprehensive technology program that enhances the learning process and facilitates school-wide administrative functions. Staying current with rapidly changing technologies is an ongoing challenge, and we must devote considerable resources to maintaining and upgrading our systems as well as add new technologies when appropriate. The technology component of the campaign will provide iPads for each faculty member, interactive boards in all classrooms, a Chromebook Cart (30), Adobe Creative Cloud, and wireless network and infrastructure enhancements. Currently, we have ten interactive boards to various classrooms, and the Adobe Creative Cloud software that is available to all students and staff. The technology and equipment project is an ongoing project that will continually grow as funds become available from pledges. None of these things would be possible without the support of all of YOU who bleed Blue & Gold! The founding families and church members would take pleasure in knowing that their original vision for this very special school was being supported by your generosity nearly 50 years after they made their own personal commitment. It is a timeless and important partnership. THANK YOU for continuing to make Tattnall
the Best of the Best!

DISTANCE LEARNING On a normal Friday in March of 2020, students were gearing up for the weekend. Pi day was celebrated in Mrs. Smothers’ room, tests were taken, weekend plans were made. But, plans change. Later that day, our students and faculty left campus and transitioned into a Distance Learning model in an attempt to “flatten the curve” and slow the rise in COVID-19 cases. One week turned into two, which turned into a month, which turned into the remainder of the school year. This unexpected turn of events was not always easy. We enjoy teaching, learning, and engaging with our Tattnall family in-person, and we missed seeing each other face-to-face; but like everything our students and faculty take on, it was done with excellence. We had a spirit week during which students and faculty built toilet paper towers and dressed up as their favorite characters. We virtually held Spotlight on the Arts. We taught and learned history and math and science and language arts. Teachers drove by students’ houses to go over flashcards. Our faculty taught in innovative ways, and students quickly caught on. Though this time wasn’t something we asked for, it’s something we’re thankful for. We pulled together as a family and supported each other in any way we could. The closeness of our Tattnall family is unmatched, and we went into the summer and 2020-2021 school year stronger and closer than ever before.

END OF YEAR TRADITIONS
8 | INSIDE THE SQUARE - TATTNALL.ORG
At Tattnall, we love our traditions: they’re what make us who we are. We love coming to the spring musicals and award ceremonies; graduations and end-of-year parties. But, with distance learning and a lot of uncertainty, many of these traditions had to shift this year, and in a lot of ways, it made the memories even more special. We held a Kindergarten Drive-Through Graduation parade so the students could see their friends (from a distance) and be celebrated for their accomplishments. They dressed up in their graduation attire, decked out their cars in celebration gear, hung out of windows and sunroofs, and had an unconventional but great time ushering in the move to first grade. Seniors had a heap of new memories made. Many of them were able to come show appreciation for their teachers during teacher in-service. We had a Spring Sports Senior Night parade where senior spring athletes decorated their cars, drove through the parking lot, and were cheered on for their accomplishments by parents and friends. Cardboard testimonies were given outside and socially-distanced, followed by single-family parking spot picnics. We celebrated the Moving Up ceremony virtually, and friends and family members from far and wide were able to congratulate our students on a fantastic 2019-2020 school year and the accolades they received. Last but not least, we held graduation when it was safe to do so at a location near and dear to the class of 2020: Jack Baynes Field. Students got to mark the end of their unconventional, memorable last year as a Trojan on campus as they were launched into their futures.

ALUMNI UPDATES Kirsten Albright ('14), RN, BSN is an ER nurse and part of the Infection Control team in the ER responsible for working with COVID patients at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Kirsten (pictured second from right) recently won the Patient First Award by saving the life of an 85 year old woman when the doctor assumed her confused mental status was due to “Sundowners”. Kirsten wanted to be sure the doctor did not miss other crucial signs, such as blood sugar, since the patient was diabetic. She tested the patient’s blood sugar and discovered the patients levels had dropped to deadly levels and began administering insulin. The doctor praised her and recommended Kirsten for the Patient First Award.

Elizabeth Hilliard Elizabeth Bass Hilliard (‘96) is our new Upper School Art teacher, but you may know her for a different reason: Truth Be Told Art. Truth Be Told Art was started in 2011 in Lance and Elizabeth's dining room from a dream and calling to be a business and free ministry that would help people learn how to paint who didn't know how to paint and get God's Truth on it. She hoped to paint with a few people and spread His love through art, but the Lord grew the interest and desire to include ministry around the southeastern USA and as far away as Haiti. The team has painted His encouraging words on her trendy "southern boutiquestyle" designs with almost 100,000 people over the last almost decade. Elizabeth believes that life allows different "seasons of life" for different opportunities. She also has found that the world of artistic adventures is easily interwoven. While still managing Truth Be Told Art and licensing and selling her designs, she felt that a part-time job teaching Upper School Art at her alma mater could fit into her daily grind of creating and teaching others to love art. She loves being back in the halls that helped build her as a person and hopes she can inspire each student to find something about art that they enjoy. In today's fast-paced culture, she is finding that her students look forward to the relaxing qualities of creating art every day. She is particularly excited about enriching the program for today's modern students with opportunities in the Digital Arts, which she hopes will build a platform for them at the collegiate level of marketing, graphic design, licensing, and advertising. We are beyond grateful to have her as a faculty member and part of our Tattnall family!

JOE MAGNAN ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Carolyn Smothers Stuart To say that Carolyn Smothers Stuart has deep Tattnall roots is an understatement. The Smothers family began making Tattnall Square Academy their home in 1982. Their contributions to the math department, Talent Show and Faculty Follies will be ingrained forever in the hearts and minds of many students. In 2001, “Little Carolyn” came home to join her mother, Mrs. Carolyn Smothers, on staff as a math teacher, and now she will be joining another Smothers, her brother Andy, as the recipient of the Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year award. An honor graduate, Carolyn ranked #3 in her class in 1995. Even in high school, her classmates knew she would succeed at anything she put her mind to, as she was voted the Most Likely to Succeed senior superlative. As a student, she was involved in Beta Club, Y-Club, Spanish Club, Key Club, and FCA. She played basketball, served as team captain her senior year, and served as editor of the Tattnall Today newspaper, all while maintaining perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade. After graduating in 1999 from Georgia Tech with a BS in Management, she completed her Masters of Education in Mathematics at Georgia Southern University in 2005. After college, Carolyn spent a year in the business world before answering her true calling: teaching math. She has been a math teacher at Tattnall on and off since 2001 for a total of 14 years. During this time, she has received numerous awards from the Chip Davidson Educator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and Impact Teacher for Baseball/Softball three times, but she is most known by her students as the Junior Class sponsor. That position involves planning, directing, and choreographing the annual, highly anticipated junior dances for Faculty Follies and Talent Show along with her mother, father, sister, and husband. Carolyn remained true blue when she married her high school sweetheart, Barry Stuart ‘95. They have two children, William ‘25 and Mary Banks ‘27. The Stuarts are active members of Ingleside Baptist Church, where she has served in the nursery, preschool, and children’s ministries for over 12 years. In addition to her church activities, her hobbies include watching her children play ball and attending any and all TSA events or games.

This year has been an unprecedented time for educators, and we’re so proud of our TSA teachers and alumni who are teaching their students from home. Educators across the country have given so much of their time to ensure that their students get the attention and instruction they need in a new environment. Their creativity and dedication throughout the process of education in 2020 has been so helpful and does not go unnoticed.
9
Tattnall is blessed to have several alumni educators across the country at elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges pouring into their students and going above and beyond.
15
The hard work you’ve put in is appreciated by your students, their families, and your alma mater!
