JOHN HANKINSON I hope this letter finds you well. Tattnall was recently recognized as the Telegraph's “Best of the Best” for the SEVENTH consecutive year! This recognition is the result of an ongoing commitment to excellence. We realize that continued success can sometimes lead to complacency; however, we will always strive to improve all areas of our institution. The 2018-19 school year marked Tattnall’s 50th year of providing academic excellence for the Middle Georgia area. We celebrated this Golden Anniversary with a capital campaign during which we met and exceeded our goal. During our 50th year, we remembered our past, embraced our present, and most importantly, planned for our future. Thank you to all who supported this campaign. During the summer, we performed many maintenance tasks and continue to implement upgrades on our campus. A few examples of upgrades include the addition of LED lighting throughout our campus, a newly renovated lunchroom, and new flooring in our office areas. Many of our faculty updated their CPR/AED training, and we plan to add two additional AED devices in the near future. We are in the process of renovating our football press box, improving our upper elementary playground, and have updated the lighting in Trojan Hall. You will often hear Tattnall referred to as a FAMILY. Our common goal, as such, is to do everything possible to ensure the success of your child. Please continue to partner with us to achieve this goal. If you have concerns, we have professional faculty and staff who you can reach out to. If you are unsure of who to contact, please communicate with your grade level administrator, so we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your family. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1969 was not just
another ordinary day. This day marked a significant milestone in the history of our school, the Tattnall community, and the lives of those who were and are privileged to be a part of this remarkable family. This was the official day TSA was chartered. We celebrated 50 years with several events and announced the campaign publically at the Golden Get+Together.

Most importantly, we kicked off a 50th Anniversary Campaign to honor our past and to plan for our future. There were five different projects and upgrades that we focused on for the campaign. THANKS TO YOU,

wonderful story in itself, the truly important story is what YOUR generosity will mean for Tattnall Square Academy. More than just a story of dollars and gifts, your generosity is the story of CREATING OPPORTUNITY for Tattnall’s incredible and eager students and for the dedicated and talented women and men on Tattnall’s faculty, who teach, inspire, and nurture our students. This summer we were able to complete several projects, while others will be ongoing over the next few years. TROJAN HALL
Trojan Hall, TSA’s auditorium, is affectionately known to some as “the old gym” as it was the original gym when the school was built in 1972. Some of the lighting was original to the previous use of this facility. The gym was transformed into an auditorium and performing arts center in 2005. This summer we were able to remove the old buzzing gym lights and upgrade the theater lighting to LED. This improvement

will allow audiences to better enjoy Trojan performances that range from weekly chapel, grandparent’s day productions, elementary musicals, Blessing of the Graduates, Faculty Follies, talent shows and much more. STUDENT FURNITURE- CLASSROOM AND CAFETERIA

The original part of the cafeteria was built in 1974. Over the years, we have expanded and refurbished the location to accommodate our growing school. The TSA Cafe, also known as the cafeteria, received an update this summer when all of the 20 year old furniture was replaced with beautiful new seating and tables. Some unique features in the cafeteria now are the booths that anchor the center of the lunchroom along with a couple of large high top tables. Next, we will turn our focus to replacing all of the student desks and chairs in the classrooms. Understandably, classroom furniture receives a great deal of wear and tear throughout the year. To ensure the safety of our students, we plan to replace all the desks in middle and upper school classrooms. Desks have already been replaced in the upper elementary grades, and future plans for the lower school include purchasing all new chairs for those classrooms. This will be an ongoing project until all rooms are equipped. PE GYM

Over the years the P.E. gym has been the home for basketball games and pep rallies. Currently, it is used for all elementary P.E. classes as well as the home court for the middle school, JV, and varsity volleyball teams. This gym is in a high traffic area and requires refurbishment to showcase its history. Renovation needs include paint, insulation, and flooring. To ensure the safety of our Trojans, we have added these upgrades to our Golden Anniversary Campaign efforts. These efforts are a focus within the next year.

FOOTBALL COMPLEX: INCLUDES PRESS BOX AND TRACK
In the fall of 1988, TSA hosted its first game on Trojan Trail, the same year the Trojans earned the school’s first GISA State Championship. On this 30th anniversary of the school’s first GISA State Championship in football, we intend to focus resources on refurbishing several areas of the football complex that include overhauling the track and renovating the press box. This summer we were able to complete renovations to the press box that include upgrades such as air conditioning, larger windows, an improved upper deck for news crews and filming, and a complete face lift to the exterior. Next, we will shift our focus to improving the track by including foundational work to the surface, striping and other similar processess. Currently there are no plans to rubberize the track. TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT
Children learn more effectively when the tools of technology are incorporated into their lessons, and educational institutions now require robust systems to support every aspect of operations. Our goal is to implement a comprehensive technology program that enhances the learning process and facilitates school-wide administrative functions. Staying current with rapidly changing technologies is an ongoing challenge, and we must devote considerable resources to maintaining and upgrading our systems as well as add new technologies when appropriate. The technology component of the campaign will provide iPads for each faculty member, interactive boards in all classrooms, a Chromebook Cart (30), Adobe Creative Cloud, and

wireless network and infrastructure enhancements. This summer we were able to add six new interactive boards to various classrooms, and the Adobe Creative Cloud software that is available to all students and staff. The technology and equipment project is an ongoing project that will continually grow as funds become available from pledges. None of these things would be possible without the support of all of YOU who bleed Blue & Gold! The founding families and church members would take pleasure in knowing that their original vision for this very special school was being supported by your generosity nearly 50 years after they made their own personal commitment. TSA MATH TEAM PLACES 1ST IN STATE Tattnall Square Academy’s awardwinning math team placed first in the GHSA 1A State Competition. The championship team was composed of Kelly Collins, Beijun Desai, Pathik Desai, and Colleen Molton. The top scoring teams in their division are invited to the state competition, of which Tattnall was the only private school in Macon to qualify. "We have 1/5 of our school that are actively on the math team," she said. "I've been on the math team for six years and it's been a wonderful experience," senior co-captain Beijun Desai said. He's one of nine seniors on the varsity math team. Math Team Coach Carolyn Smothers reads out problems that could make your brain hurt, but for the students, it fuels their passion. For the past five years, they finished as first-runner up. This year, they put in extra work, hoping it would all add up to a championship.

"We probably did about three previous tests. The whole month of April was pretty much preparing for this, so it was great seeing all of our hard work pay off," senior Kelly Collins said. After about an hour and half of testing, they had the highest cumulative score, making them state champions. "We all had our jaws dropped. It was just an amazing experience," sophomore Pathik Desai said. "I've been going to the state meet since I was a freshman and we've never quite come out on top until this year, so it was awesome to have everything wrap up and be first place my senior year," senior captain Colleen Molton said. "I have special years every year, but this one is pretty special. These nine seniors have been with me for six years, so we're very close. I love them, and hopefully they love me," Smothers said.
"Going on math meets every year, spending time with my friends, spending time with Mrs. Smothers, it was like the best experience I could ever have and I will truly miss it," Beijun Desai said. Tattnall's math team won state three times before in the Georgia Independent School Association, in 2010, 2011, and 2012. This is their first win in the Georgia High School Association, which includes both private and public schools. Of the three seniors on the team, two are headed to Georgia Tech in Atlanta and one to the University of Georgia in Athens. But Mrs. Smothers and the rest of the team aren't going to stop at this win. “I have seven upcoming seniors, and while the members of the class of 2019 were outstanding, I expect great success moving forward,” Smothers said. -Pepper Baker, 13WMAZ

TSA BASEBALL WINS BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS The Tattnall Square Academy Trojans (35-3) swept their series with Savannah Christian (11-0, 11-1) to win the GHSA Private A State Championship in Savannah May 21. This is the Trojans 3rd title since joining the GHSA and 11th state championship title in 21 years. The statement from assistant coach Kevin Brown is just as motivating today as it was some 11 years ago when Brown spoke to former player and now Assistant Coach, Jordan Brooks. “He said to EXPECT PERFECTION and ACCEPT ONLY EXCELLENCE,” Tattnall Square Academy head baseball

coach Joey Hiller said. “That goes to the absolute core of who we are at Tattnall. When he said that, I was like, ‘ding-ding-ding.’ THAT IS THE FOUNDATION OF THIS PROGRAM. We will continue to use that.” After winning the Class 1A Private state championship in 2018, the Trojans expected perfection and rolled to another championship in 2019, the school’s 11th baseball championship in their history. And with the exception of one extrainning loss during spring break to Calvary Christian of Columbus, Tattnall nearly rolled through the regular season undefeated. When the postseason came, they
received a first-round bye. Then they swept Athens Christian in the second round, then needed three games to eliminate Strong Rock Christian and Hebron Christian in back-to-back rounds before sweeping Savannah Christian in the championship series. The Trojans finished the season 34-3 and made history. Under Hiller, no single Tattnall Square class had played for four state baseball titles in a row – until last year. “EVERY YEAR AT TATTNALL, IT’S
EXPECTED TO WIN A STATE BASEBALL TITLE,” said Trey Ham, the team’s

catcher last season and one of the seniors who played for a state title every year of his career. “A lot of it is because of the tradition under Coach Hiller. WE WORKED NONSTOP TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.” The Trojans won state titles in 2016, 2018 and 2019. They made the semifinals in 2015, their first season of competing in the Georgia High School Association, then they finished as state runner-up in 2017. Only Class 5A power Loganville can match Tattnall Square’s success during the past five seasons. “EVERY DAY, WE TRIED TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF OURSELVES, whether it was on the field or off the field,” said pitcher Brooks Gorman, who according to MaxPreps was the winningest high school pitcher in the nation last year with 15 victories. “We stepped onto the field and wanted to be perfect. If we worked for that, excellence was going to come out of it. I heard that statement from Coach Brown a few times last year.”
Hiller was especially proud of the senior leadership. He said they helped keep the younger players focused and got things done, especially when Strong Rock Christian and Hebron Christian gave the Trojans all they could handle in the postseason.

“We impressed upon those guys and we wanted them to know that was not how we played ball,” Hiller said of the postseason losses. “We told them they needed to fix it. And they did.” Tattnall met Savannah Christian in the state championship series, a rematch from 2017 that Savannah Christian won. But the Trojans swept, outscoring the Raiders 22-1 in the two games. “It was a great year, everything we wanted it to be,” Hiller said. “We set the bar high all the time.” And excellence comes. -Tim Morse, Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine

What I am going to miss most about Tattnall is the atmosphere it offers. Tattnall is a place with a feel that gives everybody the opportunity to feel at home. Tattnall has been my home for five years, and I am sad that it is my time to go. All the teachers, students, and faculty have made my time here so special and something that I will never forget.

The atmosphere is unlike any other. Nowhere else can you find people who all want a student to excel and succeed. Tattnall Square Academy is one of a kind and a Christ-centered family.
Tattnall has been my family and home for fourteen years, and I can’t imagine not going to school here anymore. I will miss all my amazing friends, whether they are fellow seniors, juniors, or sophmores. I will miss my awesome teachers. When they weren’t pushing me academically, they were pushing me spiritually. I will miss my sweet Tattnall family and the contagious atmosphere. I will love you forever, Tattnall.

LOWER SCHOOL ADOPTS NEW MOTTO This year, our lower school staff has adopted the motto SALT AND LIGHT. You will see this in various places around the school throughout the year. We would like to share this motto with you and explain our plan and purpose for the year. Our adopted verse is Matthew 5:13-16: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. Coach Massey represents TSA as a strong, innovative, and creative teacher who is well respected for his leadership.

ASHLEIGH MORTON (‘18) had a successful freshman
year at Georgia Southern as a member of the Eagles’ softball team. The walk-on pitcher led the team in victories and was second in games started and complete games.
ALLIE GORDON (‘18) was named the National Christian
College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Mid-East Co-Player of the Year. The Belhaven University freshman accumulated 71 points to tie Summer Collins of Kentucky Christian to earn Co Mid-East Player of the Year honors. MARY CATHERINE SIKES (‘10) is entering her fifth year at Piedmont Academy in Monticello, where she is the Athletic Director. Sikes also serves as the athletic trainer for the sports teams at Piedmont. This is an area she has a true passion for.
Her role as the school’s athletic director does set her apart from many peers in the coaching profession. First she certainly is one of the youngest athletic directors in the area as well as the state. Sikes also realizes she is a trendsetter as a female athletic director. “It is stressful, but there is a lot that goes into athletics that people don’t see,” Sikes said. “I’m so blessed to have a strong group of coaches that can help me when I have to delegate certain aspects of a normal athletic director job.” Sikes attended Georgia College in Milledgeville for her bachelor of science in athletic training, then Mercer University as an athletic training graduate student where she worked with the 2014 Southern Conference women’s soccer championship team and earned a Master’s in Education Leadership. -The Monticello News

BRENT JONES (‘15) graduated with a BA in
Musical Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College. Before graduating, Brent was already working in the Off-Broadway scene in NYC. He spent two years performing as RJ in Addy & Uno, a role he originated from the first workshop. He also served as the stage manager for the final 8 weeks of long time NYC shows, NEWSical the Musical and The Marvelous Wonderettes. Currently, he is the Production Stage Manager for A Musical About Star Wars.
Hayley Connor(‘11) is a news producer at WLOS in
Asheville, NC. Over the summer, she received an Emmy Nomination for her work with News 13 This Morning. They were nominated for their coverage of the passing of Reverend Billy Graham.

JOE MAGNAN ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Lori Pitts Moylan Tattnall Square Academy was proud to welcome back alumnus Lori Pitts Moylan as the speaker for commencement services and announce her as the 2019 Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year. Moylan is no stranger to speaking at high school graduations. In 2005, Lori addressed her TSA classmates as the Valedictorian. She broke from tradition with her original, refreshing and memorable speech. Specifically naming each member of the class of 2005, she cited each person’s admirable qualities, noting what she had learned from them. As a Tattnall Trojan, Lori was very involved. She was on the debate team, quiz bowl team, yearbook staff and was a National Merit Finalist. Upon graduation, Lori attended Georgetown University and graduated from Mercer University with a BA in Business Administration in 2009. Lori lives in Washington, DC where she works for Facebook’s external affairs team as the Public Policy Manager. She helps manage the company’s relationships with research and advocacy organizations. Prior to Facebook, she spent her first decade in Washington working at three think tanks, the American Enterprise Institute, the Mercatus Center, and the R Street Institute. Her writings have appeared in numerous outlets, including National Affairs, National Review, and the Weekly Standard. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Andrew, and their three children.

CATHERINE HILL BRALEY (’09) married Spencer Braley
in 2014. Their son was born November 2015, and he will be starting 3K at Tattnall this fall. He is very excited to start school where mommy went to school. She practiced for 6 years as an RN at Navicent Health on the surgical oncology floor. Both she and her husband enrolled into Masters degree programs at the same time. They completed their 2 year Masters programs while both working full time and having a toddler at home. She graduated with her Masters degree from Georgia College in May 2019, and started practicing as a Nurse Practitioner in June 2019 at Central Ga Cancer Care.

This upcoming fall and spring, she will be interning full time at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia under certified child life specialists as well as taking classes at Augusta University. “Hospitals can be scary, especially when you’re a kid! It’s so vital to provide children and families with the support they need and to let kids just be kids— even if they’re in the hospital!
SHAWVER ADAMS (‘14) married Hannah Clark on
December 29, 2018 in High Point, North Carolina. Shawver has just completed his first year at Elon University School of Law where he was on the Dean's List each trimester.
ABBY CLAY COHEN (‘12) and Josh Cohen were married June 22, 2019 at The Terminal Station in downtown Macon. Abby graduated Summa Cum Laude from Georgia Southern University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations. The couple resides in Atlanta, where she is the store manager for Ginny Marie’s Boutique, and he is a digital marketing analyst with the Watauga Group.

LOGAN SIMMONS (‘18), former TSA short stop, was named Phillies Minor League Hitter of the Month for August 2019. He posted a .278/.398/.646 slash line, going 22-for-79 with two doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 19 RBI, 19 runs scored, 13 walks and three stolen bases in 24 games during August. He led all New York-Penn League hitters with a 1.044 OPS (min. 80 PA) and was tied for first in home runs last month. He finished the 2019 season ranked first in slugging percentage (.520), tied for second in home runs (12) and fifth in OPS (.853) in the New York-Penn League. leader at Radiant Church in Macon since 2016. Her husband ZACH THOMAS ('97) owns Zach Thomas Vending and runs the vending at the Rest Areas in Bibb and Monroe County. He serves as a representative for the committe of blind vendors for the state of Georgia. Their children, Abbie and Alex, attend TSA and they love being a part of the Tattnall family!

JENNA GEARY HOUSTON (‘01) and Jason Houston were
married on August 10, 2018 in St. Augustine Beach, Florida surrounded by beloved friends and family. They “mini-mooned” in Longboat Key, Florida. They reside in Sugar Hill, Georgia. Jenna is employed through Gwinnett Medical Center and works as the Head Athletic Trainer for a large 7A high school, and Jason is employed through a private company working as an Insurance Adjuster for independent tractor trailer companies.
TRISTEN BENNETT (‘15) graduated with honors with
a 3.6 GPA from Mercer University in May 2019 with a B.S. in Psychology, a minor in Chemistry and a Minor in Biology. He will be starting class in the fall of 2019 to obtain a Masters Degree in Health Administration, while working in Mercer's graduate assistant program. He is also currently studying for the MCAT to apply to Mercer's Medical school.
ANNA DOOLEY (‘13) was recently featured in VoyageATL as a trailblazer. She wrote about her business, Golden Rebel Creative, and the journey of finding and pursuing her passion.
"I prayed about it and felt that the only way to truly know if photography was my calling would be to go all in. So, I promptly quit my day job and dove headfirst into being my own boss and rocking the photography biz. So, here I am, wading the waters of photography and loving every chance I get to meet new people and capture their stories."

attnall Square Academy is grateful to the 83 individuals (including 9 business owners) who applied for a 2019 Education Tax Credit on behalf of TSA for $186,385. Due to the cap increase to $100 million, all applicants received 100% credit. These important tax credit dollars provided opportunities for 54 students to attend Tattnall Square Academy as GOAL recipients this year. HIGHLIGHTS
1. Tattnall Square Academy officially opened its elementary school Makerspace October 2. The opening marked the culmination of a vision that began last spring. Part of the school’s STEM program, the Makerspace is an exploratory class for students in 1st through 6th grades, encompassing nearly 200 students. 2. Junior Jessica Norwood was nominated and accepted into the Governor’s Honors Program for Mathematics. Jessica was selected based on her essay responses and interview and spent four weeks this summer at Berry College. 3. Senior Pate Smith was awarded the 2018 Chip Davidson Scholarship. Students in 11th and 12th grades are eligible to compete if they have a HOPE GPA of 3.5 or higher, are currently enrolled in a minimum of two AP or honors courses, have participated in a varsity sport during the previous year, and have been involved in at least one school club or activity during the previous year.

4. Senior William Stubbs was named a Georgia Scholar by the Georgia Department of Education. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life. 5. TSA's Varsity Clay Target Team won GISA General Division State Runner Up out of 11 general division schools. Out of 31 teams between both divisions, TSA finished 4th. The team score, from the three highest scores, was 807/900 targets. 6. Lt. James, TSA's CHAMPS teacher, chose Jacob Berkner's CHAMPS essay as the best from all of his schools. This is the third time a Tattnall student has been chosen in four years. Jacob presented his essay at Mercer University.
