JOE MAGNAN ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

Matthew Michael

Tattnall Square Academy was proud to welcome back alumnus Matthew Michael (‘99) as the speaker for the 2021 commencement services and announce him as the 2021 Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year.

To say that Matthew has been involved in his community would be an understatement. He has served the Macon and Middle Georgia community in a variety of ways from serving on the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors to volunteering as a baseball coach for the North Macon Youth Sports Association.

Upon graduation from Tattnall, Matthew attended Georgia College and State University where he graduated with a BA in Mass Communication. He also holds a MA in Theological Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi.

In 2008, Matthew co-founded M&R Marketing right here in Macon. Since starting in 2008 with zero clients, Matthew and his team have grown M&R Marketing to serve over four hundred. M&R Marketing also employs a team of over twenty designers, developers, writers, digital strategists, project managers, administrators and account managers. In addition, M&R Marketing was named one of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies in 2020 by Inc. 5000, and was named the 2018 Small Business of the Year by the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce.

When notified he had been chosen as the Joe Magnan Alumnus of the year, Matthew said, “Most of my memories and friendships in life originated at Tattnall, so it is an honor to have been selected for this award.”

Matthew lives in Macon currently with his wife, Kim, and their three sons Garner, Riley and Harper. They are active members of Northway Church where Matthew serves as an elder, and Kim serves on staff as Preschool Director.

Megan Scott (‘13) and Patrick Sparks (‘13) were engaged in September 2020 and were married in October 2021. Megan is a Registered Nurse at the Cardiovascular Step-down Unit at Atrium Health Navicent. Patrick graduated this spring from Middle Georgia State University and began their Surgical Tech program this fall.

Shelley Green Jakiel (‘10) currently works at Emory Johns Creek Hospital with a total joints specialist in the clinic and in the operating room as a surgical athletic trainer and first assistant. She specializes in total hip and total knee replacements. She is now expanding into research and has been accepted to the University of Georgia PhD in the Kinesiology/Biomechanics program as a research assistant to study intermittent vibration therapy in the adolescent populations affected by cerebral palsy in the Neuromusculoskeletal Health Laboratory in Athens. She and her husband, Dr. Andrew Jakiel, happily reside in Buford.

SHAWVER ADAMS (‘14) graduated cum laude with his Juris Doctor in December of 2020 from the Elon University School of Law in Greensboro, North Carolina and passed the bar exam in February of 2021. He was sworn into the Bar Association on Friday, April 23, 2021. Shawver and his wife Hannah currently live in Arlington, Virginia, and Shawver is a lawyer for IRS’s International Tax Law Division.

Kelsey Jackson (‘13), Blair Smith (‘13) Haley Brown Fowler (‘12), and Ashlyn Whetsel (‘15) all work together at Central Georgia Cancer Center in Macon. All four nurses enjoy working together and giving back to the Macon community.

Whitley Green Denney (‘08) and Brett Denney welcomed a baby girl, Polly Anne Denney, on April 4, 2021. Brett and Whitley live in Gainesville, and Whitley is a middle school math teacher and softball coach at Wesleyan School.

Lisa Mauldin Mitchell (‘07) currently works as an Acquisition Program Manager for the Air Force at Robins AFB. Lisa married Brandon Mitchell in 2014 and has two children Avery, 4, and Easton, 3.

HAYLEY CONNOR (‘11) is a two-time Emmy Winning Producer. She won for producing a memorial show for Reverend Billy Graham in the category “Outstanding Newscast- Morning Show.” In 2020-21, Hayley won her second Emmy with KPIX in San Francisco. She won for her work producing coverage on the Vacaville Wildfires in the category “Outstanding Newscast Daytime- Large Market.”

Because of our faithful and generous donors like you, 2020-2021 was a great year for Tattnall Square Academy. Your contributions to the school last year, which are critical to the annual budget and strategic plans for the future of TSA, totaled $547,687.06 (including Annual Fund, Boosters and GOAL).

The TSA Annual Fund remains the top giving priority of the school, and we are grateful for the parent participation, gaining access to even more foundatin dollars for the school. Your extraodinary responses to the Annual Fund will significantly enhance the programs and facilities at Tattnall Square Academy.

Tattnall Square Academy is grateful to the 89 individuals (including 8 business owners) who applied for a 2021 Education Tax Credit on behalf of TSA for $171,673. Due to the cap increase to $100 million, all applicants received 100% credit.

These important tax credit dollars provided opportunities for 53 students to attend Tattnall Square Academy as GOAL recipients this year. Thank you for taking the education tax credit and changing students’ lives!
