TATTNALL STRONG: HOW TSA NAVIGATED THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC March 13, 2020 marked the day the world as we know it shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, beginning August 13, 2020, Tattnall Square Academy reopened its doors to students, faculty, staff and a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the year ahead.

With no guarantee that face-to-face instruction would last the entire year, or even a month, Tattnall’s faculty, staff, students and administrators prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best.

Once returning to in-person learning began to present itself as a possibility for the 2020-2021 school year, the administration began devising a comprehensive Covid plan for the school. Lower School Director Susannah Allen recalled the strategy that school leaders established, noting that “we wanted to ensure two things: safety and the continuation of a quality, college-preparatory education.”

To minimize the Covid threat as much as possible, Tattnall implemented a myriad of safety protocols. Families could choose the option of their students participating in on-campus learning or off-campus learning. In addition, the school instituted social distancing policies along with mask requirements when social distancing was not possible. Large group events such as chapel were modified, so students could social distance safely. According to Allen, “Even though we faced many challenges with Covid, our school family worked harder than ever to provide the same great experiences and education for our students.”

With protocols in place,Tattnall’s teachers still had to navigate the unique set of challenges of teaching both digitally and inperson. Knowing that preparation for both scenarios would ensure a successful year, middle school teacher Laura Ford said, “In some ways, I believe we were prepared when the world shut down in Spring 2020, but it was still stressful for students, parents and teachers. We were all looking forward to face-to-face learning in August, but no one wanted a repeat of that stress. Having a plan in place for students to learn virtually was fantastic. I am extremely thankful for the supportive parents who made sure their students stayed on top of their assignments. I had to learn to be diligent in posting assignments to Schoology. When I did miss a few days here and there, students in quarantine were quick to email about the day’s work. I definitely saw an increase in students initiating conversations regarding their work by asking questions, making sure they understood expectations and being sure they submitted assignments correctly. Out of all the takeaways from the year, I really hope that our students continue to advocate for themselves!”

Covid interrupted not only classroom instruction but also extracurricular activities, beloved traditions and events. Carolyn Stuart, Faculty Follies and Talent Show director recalled, “One of my biggest worries was whether or not we would be able to have either show. However, after we drafted several different ideas, we decided to split each show into two nights with a limited capacity in Trojan Hall. I’m beyond grateful for everything our administration did to make these shows happen safely for our juniors and the Tattnall family.”

Tattnall traditions such as Faculty Follies were not the only events that faced uncertainty because of Covid. Student competitions such as One Act play also faced an unknown fate, yet, Tattnall’s Fine Arts department found creative ways to ensure that the show could go on.

Lower School Art Techer Will Washburn recalled “As the school year began, we realized that masks, social distancing and limiting physical contact would be necessary, but that these guidelines may greatly restrict parts of the fine arts that we love.

In March 2020, the lower school musical was postponed as we went to distance learning just a week prior to dress rehearsal.

At the start of the school year, the GHSA One Act competition was pushed from October to January. In our visual arts and music classrooms, we faced concern on how students could share materials, instruments and workspaces because of the fear of spreading germs.”

Even with those challenges, fine arts at TSA were still a highlight of the year with successful performances like Grandparents Day, Frozen KIDS and holiday band and musical performances.

Covid-19 certainly made day-to-day life all the more challenging; however, as seen over the course of the school year, the capable Tattnall family not only rose to the challenge, but that we started strong and finished strong!

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS 2021 At Tattnall, we love our traditions; they’re what make us who we are. The 2019-2020 school year saw many events become virtual or be canceled outright. One of those virtual events was Tattnall’s annual Spotlight on the Arts.

Tattnall’s Spotlight on the Arts, a showcase of visual and performing arts, features work by students in grades K3 through 12.

Each year, students, family members, faculty, and staff all gather to view student’s hard work from throughout the year.

However, with the restrictions brought about by the pandemic, there was an air of uncertainty surrounding many parts of fine arts that we love. As Tattnall’s lower school art teacher Will Washburn recalls, “Hands on collaboration, singing or acting in large groups and filling Trojan Hall to see students perform on stage seemed like they may be out of the questions at the beginning of the school year.” Simply put, even with Spotlight on the Arts scheduled for the spring, there was no guarantee that the event would take place.

Nevertheless, the Fine Arts department began planning for the event. Students in Elizabeth Hilliard’s High School Art class began work on their personal displays as soon as possible. With the showcase’s theme being, “Home is Where the HeART Is,” student’s artwork was reflective of the Macon and Middle Georgia community featuring iconic landmarks such as St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Middle Georgia born musicians such as the Allman Brothers.

Tattnall’s music students were also well prepared for Spotlight. Tattnall’s Band of Gold prepared selections such as Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” to pay homage to the famous, Middle Georgia musician. Elementary music students worked hard as well preparing for their performances with songs such as the Imagine Dragons hit, “On Top of the World.”

Students even prepared silent auction items to raise money for TSA’s art department. Items for sale ranged from holiday cards to student and faculty crafted artwork!

In the end though, Tattnall’s fine arts students and staff saw their hard work come to fruition. Spotlight on the Arts was held April 20, and students had the opportunity to showcase all of their hard work.

In Hilliard’s words, “This year’s Spotlight far exceeded my expectations! The kids worked so hard and created a student-led, wonderful show that they took pride in. We had an outpouring of support and packed hallways of people viewing student work and purchasing student-made and silent auction items to support our Fine Arts program. I am so proud of their growth as artists, and I loved having a chance to show them off to our supportive school community.”

Unwavering Excellence: Dr. Marcee Simpson, Class of 2014 Physical therapy is one of the fastest-growing careers in the United States. By the end of the decade, analysts estimate that positions in the field will increase by eighteen percent. Dr. Marcee Simpson (‘14) is well-equipped to lead that charge having just graduated from Augusta University’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy prorgam.

From a young age, Simpson has had a drive to care for others. “My family will tell you that throughout my life, I always loved playing with my mother’s first aid kit. I would always insist on a Band-Aid for the smallest of injuries and I loved wrapping our family pet in ace bandages to make her feel better.”

Simpsons’s journey to become a physical therapist started when she was a freshman at the University of Georgia. As a college freshman, Simpson thought that there were limited ways to get involved in the medical field. She soon discovered though that there are exponential ways to establish a career in the medical field saying, “As a Tattnall student, I dreamt of pursuing a career in the medical field. However I thought that the only options were physician or nurse. I’ve learned since that there are exponential ways to get involved in the medical field with numerous education levels and specialties.”

It was during her first year in Athens, by chance, that Simpson was introduced to the world of physical therapy. Simpson was offered internships within the field in both Macon and Athens. “During those internships, I really felt that God was pulling my heart toward a career in physical therapy.” Physical therapy, as a career, fulfilled many goals for her. “When I was listing priorities for a career, I wanted to do something that would foster my love of education. In addition, I wanted to enter a field where I would be able to bond with my patients.”

Simpson finds reward beyond what she gains from her career as well. “The most rewarding part of being a physical therapist is watching patients progress. Most PT patients are typically in pain or frustrated with their current condition. So getting to witness the progress of someone going from struggling to use a walker on day one of treatment to seeing them saunter out of the clinic on the last day with no help at all is such a great feeling. Seeing my patients reach their goals is what makes my job more than worth it.”

Even though she has graduated from physical therapy school, Simpson refuses to cease learning anytime soon. She plans to continue taking courses in manual therapy, Parkinson’s interventions and women’s health care. “I’m humbled by what I do not know yet and the experience I have yet to build. I try to treat each day as an opportunity to learn more and become a better practitioner for my future patients.” As she holds herself to a standard of unwavering excellence, Simpson will continue to provide the best care possible.

Pro-Level Dreams: Ivey Slaughter, Class of 2013 For Ivey Slaughter (‘13), the two most important aspects of life are God and family. “Those aspects were instilled in me at a young age by my grandfather and will never leave me. I’m a big family girl; they give me daily inspiration. They believe in me and pray for me daily, and I’m forever grateful for that.”

In addition to God and her family, Slaughter also loves one more thing: sports.

Her love of sports started at a young age as Slaughter enjoyed playing outside, and nothing could stop her from wanting to be as active as possible. Slaughter explained that at the age of three, she “was in a car accident, and my leg was broken. However, not even being in a cast could stop me. I was still doing whatever I could even with my pink cast. Soon after I had the cast removed, I started doing gymnastics from when I was four years old until I entered sixth grade.”

In sixth grade, Slaughter discovered her new love of basketball, but she faced a serious decision. Her mother asked her to choose between basketball and gymnastics. She chose basketball and said, “I believe I did choose the right sport after all.”

During her middle and high school years, the more Slaughter played basketball, the more she fell in love with the sport.

When she began her junior year, Slaughter had the opportunity to play basketball somewhere new to her: Tattnall. “When I transferred to Tattnall, I was nervous because I was leaving behind the school I had known since first grade. However, I quickly learned just how friendly the Tattnall family was when I was welcomed with warm hugs and comforting smiles by everyone I met.”

Although she became a Trojan as a junior, Ivey still made quite the impact during her time at TSA. She was voted Most Athletic by her senior classmates and played on the girls basketball State Championship team in 2013. In addition, Slaughter garnered several state titles in track and field.

Even with State Championships under her belt, Slaughter still had loftier goals to pursue. “I knew if I had the opportunity to play collegiate or professional basketball, I would go for it. I refused to give up on those goals because I knew there was a path out there for me to succeed in those goals.”

She soon achieved the former goal when, upon graduation from Tattnall, Ivey headed to Tallahassee, Florida on a basketball scholarship to play for Florida State University. In the next four years, she excelled during her time as a Seminole.

She finished her four year career with the Lady Seminoles in the Top Five in school history: games played (Second - 132), games started (Second - 132), career free throws made (Third - 372), steals (Fourth - 222), free throws attempted (Fifth - 513) and rebounds (Fifth - 912).

Still, having lived out her dream of playing collegiate basketball, Slaughter set her sights on playing at the next level. She recalled that “my ultimate dream was to play in the WNBA. After my senior season in college, I was contacted by several agents and agencies that wanted to represent me. Once I chose an agency, Sig Sports, they assigned an agent to represent me. My agent contacted teams in the WNBA and worldwide to see if they were interested in me playing for their organization.”

Soon enough, Slaughter reached another goal playing for several European countries, including Hungary, Latvia and Sweden, after graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree from FSU. Currently, Slaughter is actively pursuing several more goals, including obtaining a Masters Degree. Upon finishing her tenure playing basketball overseas, Slaughter returned to her alma mater in Tallahassee to further her education. Getting her Masters Degree is just a step towards Slaughter’s ultimate career goal of coaching women’s collegiate basketball. As she works toward that goal, she will continue to inspire others both on and off the court.

Alumni Spotlight: Mallory Huff Mallory McLendon Huff (‘07) may have begun her career in a newsroom, but she is ready to embrace the challenges presented to her in her new role as Tattnall’s Admissions Director.

Upon graduating from Tattnall, Mallory attended Valdosta State University where she graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 2011. She then moved back to Macon and worked in local television for nine years in roles ranging from directing to newsroom management.

What drew Mallory back to her alma mater was the idea of introducing new families to the school she loves. She loves being back in the halls that helped build her as a person, and often shares with prospective students and families how Tattnall helped shape her. In addition, Mallory loves seeing on campus the children of her friends she met at Tattnall.

Mallory also serves beyond her role as Admissions Director at Tattnall. She’s leading a small group for the 2021-2022 school year. Beyond her small group, she assists Trojan Legion with various events and activities. She is also the sponsor of our brand-new Trojan Trailblazers student-ambassador program!

As a student at Tattnall, Mallory always felt seen, safe and loved. And now as a parent, Mallory realizes how important it is for parents to know that their children are in a safe, loving, Christian environment where they can receive a high-quality education. She believes that she can provide a proper reading of the Tattnall experience saying, “As an alum and a parent, I feel I can give prospective families a true reading of what it means to experience Tattnall from both a student’s perspective and a parent’s.”

Mallory and her husband Kyle (‘04) have a daughter, Olivia, who will join the Tattnall family as a 3K student soon. In her spare time, Mallory enjoys spending time with family and friends, weekends at the lake, listening to live music, watching college football games, reading and being outside.

We are beyond grateful to have her as a faculty member and part of our Tattnall family!

JOE MAGNAN ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Matthew Michael Tattnall Square Academy was proud to welcome back alumnus Matthew Michael (‘99) as the speaker for the 2021 commencement services and announce him as the 2021 Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year.

To say that Matthew has been involved in his community would be an understatement. He has served the Macon and Middle Georgia community in a variety of ways from serving on the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors to volunteering as a baseball coach for the North Macon Youth Sports Association.

Upon graduation from Tattnall, Matthew attended Georgia College and State University where he graduated with a BA in Mass Communication. He also holds a MA in Theological Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi.

In 2008, Matthew co-founded M&R Marketing right here in Macon. Since starting in 2008 with zero clients, Matthew and his team have grown M&R Marketing to serve over four hundred.

M&R Marketing also employs a team of over twenty designers, developers, writers, digital strategists, project managers, administrators and account managers. In addition, M&R Marketing was named one of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies in 2020 by Inc. 5000, and was named the 2018 Small Business of the Year by the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce.

When notified he had been chosen as the Joe Magnan Alumnus of the year, Matthew said, “Most of my memories and friendships in life originated at Tattnall, so it is an honor to have been selected for this award.”

Matthew lives in Macon currently with his wife, Kim, and their three sons Garner, Riley and Harper. They are active members of Northway Church where Matthew serves as an elder, and Kim serves on staff as Preschool Director.

ALUMNI Megan Scott (‘13) and Patrick Sparks (‘13) were engaged in September 2020 and were married in October 2021. Megan is a Registered Nurse at the Cardiovascular Step-down Unit at Atrium Health Navicent.

Patrick graduated this spring from Middle Georgia State University and began their Surgical Tech program this fall.

Shelley Green Jakiel (‘10) currently works at Emory Johns Creek Hospital with a total joints specialist in the clinic and in the operating room as a surgical athletic trainer and first assistant. She specializes in total hip and total knee replacements. She is now expanding into research and has been accepted to the University of Georgia PhD in the Kinesiology/Biomechanics program as a research assistant to study intermittent vibration therapy in the adolescent populations affected by cerebral palsy in the Neuromusculoskeletal Health Laboratory in Athens. She and her husband, Dr. Andrew Jakiel, happily reside in Buford.

SHAWVER ADAMS (‘14) graduated cum laude with his Juris Doctor in December of 2020 from the Elon University School of Law in Greensboro, North Carolina and passed the bar exam in February of 2021. He was sworn into the Bar Association on Friday, April 23, 2021. Shawver and his wife Hannah currently live in Arlington, Virginia, and Shawver is a lawyer for IRS’s International Tax Law Division.

Kelsey Jackson (‘13), Blair Smith (‘13) Haley Brown Fowler (‘12), and Ashlyn Whetsel (‘15) all work together at Central Georgia Cancer Center in Macon. All four nurses enjoy working together and giving back to the Macon community.

HAYLEY CONNOR (‘11) is a two-time Emmy Winning Producer. She won for producing a memorial show for Reverend Billy Graham in the category “Outstanding NewscastMorning Show.” In 2020-21, Hayley won her second Emmy with KPIX in San Francisco.

She won for her work producing coverage on the Vacaville Wildfires in the category “Outstanding Newscast Daytime- Large Market.”

Whitley Green Denney (‘08) and Brett Denney welcomed a baby girl, Polly Anne Denney, on April 4, 2021. Brett and Whitley live in Gainesville, and Whitley is a middle school math teacher and softball coach at Wesleyan School.

Lisa Mauldin Mitchell (‘07) currently works as an Acquisition Program Manager for the Air Force at Robins AFB. Lisa married Brandon Mitchell in 2014 and has two children Avery, 4, and Easton, 3.

These important tax credit dollars provided opportunities for 53 students to attend Tattnall Square Academy as GOAL recipients this year.

HIGHLIGHTS

Three seniors signed athletic scholarships in the spring.

Madyson Atwater signed a softball scholarship with Thomas University, Carter Fink signed a baseball scholarship with Snead State Community College, and Emma Cate Lossiah signed a cheerleading scholarship with Georgia Tech.

Senior Grace Hiller signed a softball scholarship with Clemson University.

In the Golden Eagle competition, Katie Hatcher was named runner-up in the communications, marketing and journalism category.

Pathik Desai was named the 2021 TSA Star Student. He chose Mr. Kurt Dzwonkowski as his Star Teacher.

Dylan Jones was selected as a finalist for the statewide Governor’s Honors program. He traveled to Berry College this summer to study communicative arts.

Tattnall fourth graders held a lemonade war fundraiser after reading the novel, The Lemonade Wars. They raised over $700 for All About Animals!

For the first time since joining the GHSA, the Varsity Boys’ soccer team advanced to the state playoffs.

TSA’s One Act team won 2nd place in the GHSA Region 1-A One Act competition with their performance of The Wizard of Oz.
