John Hankinson Head of School

Affiliation with Tattnall Square Baptist Church Tattnall Square Baptist Church was organized in 1891 as a mission of First Baptist Church with sixtyeight charter members. After initially meeting in the chapel of Mercer University for eight years, the church was constructed on land which had been deeded by Mercer University for that purpose. The church remained there until 1975. Then Tattnall Square Baptist Church relocated temporarily to a building on Crestline Drive and met there until 1977, when its new facility was completed on Zebulon Road. In 1988, the church dedicated its new Waters Educational Building, named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. James Waters.

From the congregation of Tattnall Square Baptist Church, many have gone forth to serve in foreign and local service as ministers, missionaries and teachers. The church has strongly supported these men and women in this work, but desired also to focus on the home area by providing important Biblical training.

As a result of this goal, Tattnall Square Academy was opened as a mission of Tattnall Square Baptist Church in September, 1969. A Board of Directors was selected from the membership of Tattnall Square Baptist Church.

A total of 98 students initially enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grades. Grades 7, 8 and 9 were added in 1970. By 1973, the Academy was complete through twelfth grade, and its first graduation exercises were held on June 3, 1974 with 39 graduates.

Tattnall Square Academy represents a long held vision of Tattnall Square Baptist Church to serve the community by providing a source of quality education in a Christian environment. The Academy was born as a result of a prayerful search for meaningful opportunities to accomplish this goal.

If you do not have a church home in this area, you are welcome to join the fellowship at Tattnall Square Baptist Church by professing faith in Jesus Christ, by transferring your membership from another Baptist church, or by your statement of faith and prior baptism.

About TSA Tattnall Square Academy is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). The faculty and staff set the tone for excellence. Together with our students, we have created an exceptional Christian educational environment. As our school crest symbolizes, Tattnall Square Academy is dedicated to nurturing the mind, spirit, and body.

History Tattnall Square Academy was chartered as a nonprofit corporation by the State of Georgia in 1969. Our school is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Tattnall Square Baptist Church members, school parents, and members of our community. Located in North Macon, Tattnall Square Academy is a co-educational day school for students in preschool through grade twelve and provides a college preparatory curriculum.

Statement of Faith  We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inherent Word of God (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:21). 

We believe there is one God, eternally existent in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30).



We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33); His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35); His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15, 7:26); His miracles (John 2:11); His vicarious and atoning death (I Corinthians 15:3; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 2:9); His resurrection (John 11:25; I Corinthians 15:4); His ascension to the right hand of the Father (mark 16:19); His personal return in power and glory (Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11).



We believe in the absolute necessity of regeneration by the Holy Spirit for salvation because of the exceeding sinfulness of human nature, and that men are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ and that only by God’s grace and through faith alone we are saved (John 3:16-19, 5:24; Romans 3:23, 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5).



We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:28-29).



We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:26-28).



We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a godly life (Romans 8:13-14; I Corinthians 3:16, 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:30, 5:18).

This statement of faith is fundamental to basic Christian tenets and contains doctrines to which we unreservedly adhere and teach.

K3 and K4 Our mission in preschool is for your child to grow in the same way that Jesus grew. Luke 2:52 is our theme verse. It says, "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men." If Christ is our example, it is fitting then, for us to make it our mission to help your child grow in wisdom (knowledge), stature (movement and coordination), in favor with God (spiritually), and in favor with men (social skills). Our curriculum seeks to develop children in each of these areas with skills taught through thematic units and interactive play.

Kindergarten Our goal is to educate, love, and nurture your children in a caring, Christian environment. Our curriculum provides many hands-on experiences that allow children to explore learning in creative ways through the use of various manipulatives.

Our full day program allows these young students the opportunity to express themselves creatively and, by encouraging them to develop their problem solving skills through experimentation with hands-on-materials.

1st Grade Our mission in first grade is to establish a solid Christian education foundation in three specific areas. First, our academics are anchored in successfully integrating units in reading, language arts, and math. Next, our students develop socially through numerous group activities that develop cooperation and respect for self and others through our teaching of Christian character. The third and possibly the most important part of our students’ growth deals with their spiritual development which is taught through our Bible curriculum. Together with parents’ reinforcement at home and working together as a team, our mission becomes successful. Our ultimate goal is to provide a positive academic experience and to know each child’s strengths, needs, and learning styles.

2nd Grade Our mission in second grade is to help each child mature academically, spiritually, and socially. We strive to help each child recognize and develop his or her strengths and talents. Equipping students with reading skills and decoding strategies is a high priority. Our math curriculum provides students with a strong foundation of computation, problem solving skills, and math vocabulary. Our exploratory classes include a variety of opportunities for students to explore art, science, and technology. It is our goal to facilitate each child’s full potential.

3rd Grade Third grade is an exciting year full of many new experiences for your child. Third grade marks the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Within our content areas of language arts, math, science, social studies, and Bible, class work undergoes many changes in style and length. Third graders show evidence of expanding language with increased vocabulary. They are ready to engage in abstract discussions as they respond to curricula and life experiences. There is an increased level of independence that is formed and encouraged on a daily basis through the use of life skills. In order to meet the challenges of the future, third grade strives to help each child develop socially, emotionally, and academically in a Christ-like environment.

4th Grade In fourth grade, students are deepening their knowledge of mathematics, reading, and writing. While these are focus areas, we also begin a more in depth study of science and social studies. Fourth graders are equipped to complete more complex assignments that ask them to assimilate knowledge from a variety of resources. Students are encouraged to become independent learners across the curricula, while still benefitting from group interactions in a cooperative, Christ-like learning environment.

5th Grade The fifth grade teachers strive to provide a nurturing, Christian environment for our pre-teen learners to perfect basic skills with a college and career preparatory mind set. Our literacy goal is to offer a focus for instruction and help ensure that students gain adequate exposure to a range of texts and tasks, including the core areas of science and history. In the content area of mathematics our purpose is to develop fluency and understanding of mathematical operations and their applications in daily life situations.

6th Grade The sixth grade year at Tattnall Square Academy is a year of transitions filled with opportunities for leadership. Students are challenged to see the world through the lens of a Biblical worldview. The goal of our instructional time is to develop life-long learners through the disciplines of a rigorous academic curriculum. Preparation in English language arts, mathematics, and literacy in science, social studies, and technical subjects will ensure that our students have the opportunity to master the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in the middle school years.

Community Service All elementary students are provided opportunities for community service through field trips, donation drives, class projects, and school wide community service events.

LAB 413 - Learning And Believing Based on Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength,� LAB 413 is a learning resource program which allows students to have individualized instruction in the areas of reading and mathematics. Students will be assisted individually or in small groups either in the resource lab or in their own classroom. The purpose of this program is to support our students and teachers in their pursuit of academic achievement and excellence.

Elementary Art Elementary Art is geared toward teaching all students the fundamentals of both art and art history. We hope to cultivate a path for a lifetime of love and passion for the arts. Beginning in preschool we teach both art history and how everything begins with a simple shape. We use this same principle throughout their growing experience, building on it, and adding the basic elements of art. Each student experiences a multitude of mediums, such as, chalk, oil, pastels, paint, charcoal, markers, crayon, glue, paper, paper mache, plaster, and clay. In the spring, their growth and talents are then proudly put on display in Tattnall’s annual Spotlight on the Arts. This special night allows the student to share their ability, knowledge, imagination, and creativity with their family and friends.

Music In the music classroom at TSA, the primary focus is to develop a love for music in our students. Children are invited to experience music first hand through singing, movement and performing on instruments. Incorporating the Kodaly Method, students use folks songs and rhymes to discover beat, rhythm, tuneful singing, and learn to notate and read music.

Discovery The DISCOVERY Program provides avenues of learning outside of the regular classroom for gifted/highly talented students in grades two - six. In order to be enrolled in DISCOVERY a student must meet criteria for admissions based on standardized tests, classroom performance/grades, teacher recommendation and testing.

The class covers a range of topics not covered within the regular classroom setting. The goals of the DISCOVERY Program are to provide additional avenues for learning for gifted/highly talented students and to produce students who will contribute to their community to their utmost potential.

Computer Each elementary class comes to the primary or intermediate computer lab once a week for a structured class in computer skills. In 4K, 5K, and 1st grade, students focus on correct finger placement, familiarity with the keyboard, computer terminology, and mouse techniques. The 2 nd and 3rd graders are introduced to Microsoft Word and Power Point with an emphasis on choosing font style and color, inserting graphics, and typing paragraphs. With 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students, the emphasis is on memorizing the alphabetic keyboard and mastering the techniques necessary to create Power Point presentations, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and news articles in Publisher.

Academic reports are issued every nine weeks.

Classes are 50 minutes, 5 days a week, 7 periods daily, 10 minute break Parents and students use Schoology, an LMS (Learning Management System). An LMS is an organized, consistent way for a school and its teachers to share instructional materials with students. It is also an organized, consistent means for parents to receive information about their child's education.

The Tattnall Math Team has built a championship legacy earning an average of 19 first place trophies annually.

Summer Day Care Summer Day Care is available for rising K-4 through 6th grade students. The service is available from the end of the school year to the beginning of the next school year from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Morning and afternoon snacks are included; however, lunch is not. Students bring a sack lunch. An additional cost will be billed for children picked up after 6:00 p.m.

After School Care and Summer Day Care prices subject to change.

Lunch Program - TSA Cafe Students may choose from hot meal options each day or may purchase a la carte. A salad bar with fresh fruits and vegetables is also available on a daily basis along with cold sandwiches. A menu is published monthly on our website and sent home with students to make weekly lunch planning easy and convenient for our families.

Students may also bring their lunch if desired. Students may enjoy their lunch in our lunchroom or in several designated outdoor dining areas.

You may choose to make payments into your child’s lunch account or pay on a daily basis.

Lunchroom balances are sent home monthly, but may be obtained at any time by contacting a member of the lunchroom staff.

Day Care & Lunch

After School Care Our After School Care is available for students in K3 through sixth grade. This service is available from school dismissal until 6:00 p.m. An additional charge will be billed separately for children picked up after 6:00 p.m. The program is open by reservation only for conference days, early dismissals, and other school events. Additional information can be requested through the Admissions Office.

Our Faculty Our school has a faculty and professional staff of 78. All faculty members meet the same professional learning unit requirements as teachers certified by the State of Georgia. Our faculty averages 17 years of teaching experience, and 14 years is the average tenure at Tattnall. Working in an independent school offers our teachers the opportunity to use interactive teaching methods that engage our students and encourage higher order critical thinking skills.

Accreditation Tattnall Square Academy is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Southern Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the Georgia Independent School Association, and the Georgia High School Association.

Tattnall accepts and classifies transfer credits or grade replacements from schools that are accredited by regional accrediting agencies that are part of the Commission on International and Transregional Accreditation.

CHOOSE PERSONAL ATTENTION The average class size consists of 13 students, therefore, allowing faculty the opportunity to better serve each individual student’s needs.

National Merit Recognition Tattnall Square Academy had one student in the Class of 2009 who was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. The Class of 2011,2013 and 2014 each had one student who was commended for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Grade Point Average and Class Rank Grades earned in academic subjects are used to determine a student’s grade point average. All Advanced Placement Courses are weighted with an extra 10 points in the computation and honors courses are weighted an extra 5 points. Beginning with the Class of 2018, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses will be weighted with an extra 5 points and honors courses will be weighted with an extra 2 points.

Tattnall Square Academy recognizes students with an overall average of 90 or better in academic core classes at graduation as Honor graduates. Students who achieve an overall average in academic core classes of 95 and above are designated as Honors with Distinction graduates.

Requirements for Graduation Our college preparatory curriculum requires the following classes for graduation from Tattnall Square Academy: 4 units of Math 1 unit of Health/PE 4 units of English 1 unit of Fine Arts 4 units of Social Studies 2 Academic Elective units 4 units of Science 2 units of Bible 2 consecutive units of the same Foreign Language 1 unit of Community Service (20 hours per year, grades 9-12).

BYOD Initiative Students are encouraged to bring their own personal device on a daily basis and are given access to the wireless technology throughout campus. TSA is a Google Apps for Education school providing GMAIL accounts to all students in grades 5-12.

Advanced Placement Program Dual Enrollment Advanced Placement classes are offered in U.S. Government and Politics, Calculus AB/BC, Art, Biology, Statistics, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Psychology, and American History. All colleges and universities in the United States value AP exam grades in the admission process and use these grades to award college credit or advance placement. Dual Enrollment classes are offered through Middle Georgia State College in English and History.

Student Activities Our faculty realizes that each student has his/ her own assets and needs. Therefore, we provide a wide variety of activities that attend to the interests of each student’s unique abilities.

Interscholastic athletics are available as well, and our colors are royal blue and gold. The team nickname is "The Trojans." Tattnall is a member of the Georgia High School Association, and we compete in that league in the Class A Division. Tattnall fields the following teams:

CHOOSE TO PREPARE On average, 92% of graduates who earned HOPE retained it after their freshman year of college.

The Class of 2016 was awarded almost $2 million in scholarships (excluding HOPE) and were accepted to over 40 different colleges and universities.

Other Fees and Services An annual re-enrollment fee of $150.00 per child is charged to guarantee placement for the upcoming school year. Reenrollment fees are billed in April.

An entrance fee of $500.00 per family (nonrefundable) is payable only upon entrance of the first child to Tattnall Square Academy.

The fee may be divided equally and paid on a monthly basis during the year.

Electives: High School Art Driver’s Ed

Tuition payments are made in 12 monthly installments beginning in June and running through May of the following calendar year.

There is a $300.00 discount per child for tuition and fees paid in full for the entire family account

by June 15th.

Credit Cards Tattnall Square Academy accepts VISA, MasterCard, and American Express as payment for tuition and fees. Automatic recurring monthly tuition credit card payments may be set up through the Finance Office.

ASEP Program The Academic Support and Enrichment program is available to students in grades 7-12 who meet certain requirements. The program is designed with a small student teacher ratio. The cost of the program is $1,350.00 a year ($150.00 per month from September -May).

Tuition and Fees

The tuition and fees below are for the 2017-2018 school year.

Tuition Policy 1. Tuition payments are made in 12 monthly installments beginning in June and running through May of the following calendar year. Tuition can also be paid in full prior to June 15th to receive a $300.00 per child discount for tuition paid in full for the entire family account.

2. Tuition payments are due on the 1st of the month and become past due on the 15th. At that time a $50.00 late fee will be added to the account.

3. Accounts that are past due on the 15th will be mailed a reminder letter reflecting the past due balance and late fee.

7. No student will be allowed to return in the fall for the new year if a balance is due from the preceding year.

8. A $35.00 fee will be assessed for all returned tuition or class/club checks. For excessive returned checks, Tattnall Square Academy reserves the right to request payment in the form of cash, money order, or certified check only.

9. Tattnall Square Academy reserves the right to require prepayment of tuition in full for an upcoming school term if excessive delinquent payments were experienced in the preceding year.

Refund/Withdrawal Policy

4. Accounts left unpaid by the next monthly billing cycle will be mailed a collection letter reflecting the past due balance, the current month’s tuition, and the added charges. This letter will include a notice regarding terminating educational services if the account is not paid in full within ten days.

In the event a student withdraws from Tattnall Square Academy, the following policies apply:

5. Report card, transcripts, diplomas, or any school records will not be released if any account balance is past due.

1. A withdrawal fee will be charged for any student who is withdrawn during the school year. This fee must be paid before any academic or behavioral records will be released to the incoming school or school system.

6. Students will not be permitted to take semester or final exams or to participate in end of the year activities (including but not limited to Baccalaureate, Academic Awards Banquet, and Graduation Ceremonies) if any account is past due.

2. Report cards, transcripts, diplomas, or any school records will not be released until a student is officially withdrawn and all financial obligations are met. Enrollment is not terminated until a student is officially withdrawn through the Registrar’s office.

CHOOSE INDIVIDUALITY Eighty percent of students participate in at least one extracurricular activity which encourages individuals to explore various activities and to foster a new love of academics, athletics, or fine arts.
