The Polk County Community Health Forum will be held Thursday, Jan. 17 from 5:30 7:30 p.m. at the Isothermal Community College, Polk Campus.

The cupola that sits atop the Polk County Courthouse had to be removed after recent winds caused the material to flap. Interim Polk County Manager Marche Pittman updated commissioners during a Jan. 7 meeting that the spire was waving in the wind so he had it removed. Pittman said he is talking to county cooperative extension director John Vining who is communicating with an architect to find a more suitable material for repairs. Landrum man accused of sexual assault on minor

Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Officers arrested Alfard Steven Mullins Jr. of Landrum Friday, Jan.

11 on two counts each of criminal sexual conduct with a minor – victim 11 to 14 years of age and incest.

Deputies took Mullins, 34, into

Local resident, Trunk, named to Second Wind Hall of Fame Jim Trunk recently became a member of the Second Wind Hall of Fame, having been nominated by Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity.

Second Wind provides recognition for retirees 60 years and older for outstanding volunteer work in area organizations that exemplify the concept that retirement need not be the end of a productive life of service to others and their community, but a “second wind” of opportunity to serve mankind.

Jim and his wife, MaryBeth, have lived in the area since 1997.

They moved here from Michigan where Jim was comptroller for Michigan Bell. They have three children and 10 grandchildren.

Since retiring, Jim Trunk has been very active volunteering

in various community organizations including Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity, where he has been on the construction crew for 14 years.

He has also served on the Tryon Fine Arts Center Board of Directors, the Polk County Community Foundation Finance and Education Committees, and is past President of the Children’s Resource Outreach of South Carolina at Cliffs of Glassy. He volunteers as a Heritage School tutor in Travelers Rest and is an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

In his spare time, Jim Trunk enjoys golf, home improvement projects and is an avid soccer fan.

Meth lab busted in Tryon

The Tryon Police Department uncovered a small methamphetamine lab on June 10 and arrested two individuals for manufacturing the substance.

Angela White Ross, 45, and Brian Paul Blackwell, 39, of 90 Beaver St., Tryon were arrested and each charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, maintaining a dwelling/place/ vehicle for a controlled substance, conspiracy and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Tryon Police Chief Jeff Arrowood.

Arrowood said a tip led to an investigation and his department along with the Columbus Police Department executed a search warrant on the home during the evening of Thursday, June 10.

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) was also called to investigate.

In October 2012, the mother of a teen girl filed a report with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, which stated Mullins had been sexually abusing her daughter since 2006.

The mother said on Friday, Oct. 5 she picked her daughter up from school and the juvenile proceeded to tell her that Mullins, who is related to the girl, began sexually

meth and other items such as butane, chemicals such as drain cleaner and pseudoephedrine, according to Arrowood.

Meth labs continue to be discovered in Polk County with recent ones being classified as small labs for personal use. Local sheriff officials and Arrowood said small labs are becoming more common due to it being easier to make meth than purchase it.

In 2012, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office discovered 10 total meth labs.

Ross and Blackwell each received $50,000 bonds and were both still being held in custody as of last Friday, Jan. 11.

An outstanding bond for Ross was also discovered from 2004 for a worthless check, Arrowood said, so Ross was given an additional $300 bond.

Ross and Blackwell each had first appearances in court last Friday, Jan.11. assaulting her in 2006 and that the last occurrence happened Aug. 3, 2012.

The report states that the victim told investigators that Mullins touched her inappropriately and had sexual intercourse with her.

Mullins has been a custodian for the Polk County School System for almost a decade. The system has not said if it will take any action against Mullins.

William Ellsworth Cromer

William Ellsworth (Bill) Cromer died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.

He was born July 1, 1916 in Findlay, Ohio, the son of H. Fred and Alpha Radebaugh Cromer. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1938 and began his career at the General Electric Co. in finance and accounting. He was a member of the traveling auditor staff and a financial manager in the Jet Engine Div. After 21 years he left G.E. for financial officer positions with Kaman Corp. and the East Ohio Gas Co., a subsidiary of the Consolidated Natural Gas Co. Bill became the controller and chief financial officer for the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America in 1969 and retired to Flat Rock, N.C. In 1982 and for the last 10 years he lived at Tryon Estates in

Columbus.

Bill loved sports, music, the theatre and he loved to sing. He was the center on the Miami University basketball team and sang in the Miami Glee Club.

He sang for over 70 years in church choirs, was a member of barbershop choruses, the Cincinnati Orpheus Society, and sang with the Hendersonville Chorale and the Carolina Chamber Singers.

He was the valedictorian of his Findlay High School class of 1934, treasurer and then vice president of his Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, president of the Miami senior class, and a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa, Delta Sigma Pi and Beta Alpha Psi honorary societies. He was also president and a member of the Miami Alumni Association Board.

Bill was president of the Raritan Valley Chamber of Commerce in New Jersey, vice president of the Rocky River, Ohio Kiwanis Club and of the downtown Kiwanis Club of Cincinnati, Chairman of the Civitan Foundation of Hendersonville

and President of the Cincinnati chapter of the GE Elfun Society.

He was listed in Who’s Who in America and was a member of the Second Wind Hall of Fame, having served as Treasurer of Historic Flat Rock, a member of the Hendersonville Symphony Board and of the Advisory Board of Brevard Music Center.

In addition to choir singing he was a trustee and deacon of several churches including the Congregational Church of Tryon where he was a member and the First Congregational Church of Hendersonville where he was an associate member.

Bill was predeceased by Betty Anne Schiewetz Cromer whom he met at Miami while she was a freshman and he a senior. They were married Dec. 28, 1940 and Betty returned for her final semester at Miami, graduating in 1941.

His career relocated his family numerous times in twelve cities in six states before retiring to Flat Rock, N.C. with Betty handling the moves including re-schooling

the children. They had three children: William E., Jr. (Lucia) of Germantown, Tenn., Carol Cromer Anson (now deceased) of Lithopolis, OH, and Kenneth Richard of Greensboro, GA. They have five grandchildren, Julie Cromer Young (Alan), Hollen Cromer Mitchell (Lance), Katherine Cromer Brock (Bradley), Peter R. Anson (Emily), Andrew F. Anson (Meghan); and four great-grandchildren, Liana Anson, Levi Anson, Jack Anson and Will Young.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

National trend of increased gun sales seen locally

A national discussion of gun regulation and the right to bare arms recently spawned a jump in sales according to one gun shop owner.

The increase was seen locally as much as it was seen on a national level, said Foothills Gun Gallery owner Brian Ross.

“We’ve been so busy that we haven’t had a chance to sit down and actually look at the numbers – how much more business we’ve done than last year – but we have definitely seen an increase in sales,” Ross said.

Ross noted the surge was related to a combination of two things.

He said some people were purchasing Christmas presents and using Christmas money but others were concerned about restrictions for gun ownership becoming more stringent in the near future.

Several customers discussed

with Ross their desire to purchase a gun because of President Obama’s reelection and the fear of stricter gun regulations after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Ross said his Columbus shop saw an increase over the last month primarily in the sale of ammunition, pistols and of Armalite Rifles or ARs. “[Stricter regulation] It’s on the back of our minds but we have to keep going right now and see what happens down the pipe,” Ross said.

Ross said Foothills Gun Gallery from the beginning intended to fill a gap in the area by providing more than just guns to hunting enthusiasts and outdoorsmen. The shop also sells hunting gear, archery equipment and even outerwear.

Pinecastle Records signs new artists, Newton and Thomas Pinecastle Records of Columbus recently announced that it has signed Mark Newton and Steve Thomas to its roster.

Their debut album is titled “Reborn” and will be released on April 9. Both men are native Virginians who struck out separately in the music business decades ago. Now they are eager to blend their various musical flavors together to share with bluegrass and Americana fans. Bass player Matt Wallace rounds out the trio to tour

the country.

Newton, born into a musical family, became interested in bluegrass and county music at 6 years old. In 1983 Newton teamed up with Rickie and Ronnie Simpkins and Sammy Shelor to form the Virginia Squires. Newton then went on to perform with the Tony Rice Unit and The Seldom Scene.

In 1997 Newton teamed up with Bill Emerson and recorded A Foot in the Past, A Foot in the Future for Pinecastle Records. Newton is es-

St. Luke’s Hospital welcomes patient financial services manager Caryl Mitchell recently joined the St. Luke’s Hospital’s team as patient financial services manager and will assume responsibility for managing the patient accounting and patient access departments.

Mitchell comes to St. Luke’s from Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) where she held various supervisory roles in the legal accounts, commercial/managed care and Medicare departments of the CHS System Business Office.

Mitchell has also worked with NCO Financial Systems, a company that provides revenue cycle

services to healthcare providers.

“I am excited to have someone of Caryl’s caliber and experiences join our team,” said Christine Martin, chief financial officer of St. Luke’s Hospital. “This is an important position at St. Luke’s Hospital, and we are pleased that she will bring great professional and personal skills to benefit our hospital.”

Laurel Hurst decorate your door contest

Residents at Laurel Hurst Retirement Community participated in their first Decorate Your Door For Christmas contest. Every resident was able to do a little something and then some went above and beyond. There was a box in the lobby where anyone could vote on their favorite door. Voters could only submit one vote per person. The top vote getter was Grace Beach (at left) with her wintery village scene and lovely choo choo train. Second place, by one vote, went to Doris Stanley (at right) who wrapped her door like a present and accompanied it with a glittery green wreath and silver tree. Campbell-Wilson wedding Lindsay Renee Campbell and Michael Ryan Wilson were married September 22, 2012 during a 6:30 p.m. ceremony at Magnolia Manor in Westminster, S.C. The Rev. Charles Fritz performed the ceremony, which was followed by a reception at the manor. The Rev. Warren Elliott extended the prayer of blessing at the reception.

Wilson is the daughter of Christopher and Renee Campbell of Easley, S.C.; and the granddaughter of Larry and Linda Guy of Easley, S.C. and Ulysses Campbell of Greenville, S.C. She graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor of science degree in accounting and received a master of science degree in accounting from the College of Charleston and has her CPA licensure.

Mr. Wilson is the son of Michael and Barbara Wilson of Mill Spring; and the grandson of Boyce and Genelle Jackson and Clarence and Ailene Wilson; all of Mill Spring. He graduated from the University of North Car-

olina-Asheville with a bachelor of art degree in mass communications and received his master of art degree from Liberty University of professional counseling.

Miss Samantha Kaiser of Raleigh, N.C. and Miss Kelly Barr of Charlotte, N.C. attended the bride as maids of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Keri Rogers of Greenville, S.C. and Mrs. Courtney Carta of Crofton, Md.; all friends of the bride.

Michael Wilson, father of the groom; along with Brandon Searcy of Asheville, N.C., friend of the groom; served as best men.

Groomsmen were Adam Campbell of Easley, S.C., brother of the bride; Timothy Foster of Spartanburg, S.C., Joseph Gschwend of Shelby, N.C. and Joseph Pate of Columbus, all friends of the groom. Junior groomsman was Joshua Guy of Easley, S.C., cousin of the bride.

Following the ceremony, the couple spent their honeymoon in Maui.

Rotary Club of Tryon recognizes Paul Nelson In a recent ceremony, the Rotary Club of Tryon recognized Paul Nelson for his support and contributions to the Rotary Foundation with the presentation of the Paul Harris Award.

This is the second Paul Harris Award for Nelson, which is named in honor of one of the four founders of Rotary International. The Rotary Foundation is the financial engine that funds projects worldwide that promote international peace and understanding.

The members of the local Rotary Club wish to express their appreciation to Paul Nelson for his service to others.
