Norfolk Southern celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with a tour of an exhibit car across 10 states and 15 cities, including Landrum. Landrum City Administrator Steve Wolochowicz said the car would roll into Landrum Thursday, Dec. 6. and be open to the public from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. “We’re looking forward to this piece of railroad history coming to our community,” he said. “We hope as many people as possible will come out to see it.” A specific location is yet to be determined by Norfolk Southern but Wolochowicz said the railcar will sit off East Tucker Street on the west side of Hwy. 176. Tryon turns down Jervey-Palmer offer by Leah Justice
Polk County will resume ownership of the Jervey-Palmer building after Tryon turned down the gift. Tryon Town Council met Nov. 20 and following a closed session decided not to take the
building. Tryon officials sent the county a letter stating the town’s refusal of the property on Nov. 29. “At their meeting on Tuesday, November 20, 2013, the Tryon Board of Commissioners decided that the Town of Tryon
does not wish to proceed with the proposed transfer of ownership of the Jervey-Palmer building to the Town of Tryon,” states a letter to county commissioners from Tryon Town Manager Cailtin Martin. “Jerry Thomas (Continued on page 4)

Patricia Smith “Patsy” Splawn, 74, of 4559 Chesnee Road, Rutherfordton died December 2, 2012 in Landrum, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Esco and Beatrice Westbrook Smith; be-

Patsy was an active member of Melvin Hill Church of the Brethren and worked for several years as a dental assistant in both Landrum and Spartanburg. She assisted Ralph in the family business, Splawn Egg Farm,
for many years and worked part time at Harley’s Dress Shoppe in Chesnee, S.C. Not only was Patsy dearly loved by the Smith and Splawn families but by her church family and community for her hospitality and willingness to help others. Their home was always open to family and friends for many happy gatherings and she will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Petty Funeral Home,

A brush fire towards the rear of Harmon Field in Tryon over the weekend caused sounds similar to gunshots due to bamboo that burned. Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis said the Tryon Fire Department was dispatched on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2:11 a.m. to the fire and found approximately ½ to ¾ of an acre of wooded area on fire. The fire was close to the top of Baker Road. Davis said residents in the area reported hearing loud pops or explosions just before or during the fire suppression activities. “The fire was involving some bamboo that borders the rear of Harmon Field,” Davis said. “Because of its high water content, bamboo, when burning,
will pop and crack (sounding very similar to a gunshot). There were no signs of any electrical causes (like a downed power line).” The Tryon Fire Department was assisted by the Columbus Fire Department and the N.C. Forest Service. Cleanup of the site was ongoing until midafternoon, Sunday, Dec. 2, according to Davis. Davis said the fire is suspicious and is the second similar type fire at Harmon Field in the last month. He said more than two acres of wooded area burned in November. Both the fires are currently under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the fires is asked to call the Tryon Fire Department at 828-859-9566.

White Oak of Tryon, in conjunction with the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, will collect new toys for Christmas for children in Polk County who may not otherwise get toys this year. The toys must be new and unwrapped and can be of any size. The drop box is located in the lobby of White Oak of Tryon and everyone in the community is encouraged to drop off toys. The box will be available until Dec. 20, when the toys will be taken to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for distribution. “This is the fourth time we have worked with Sheriff Donald Hill and his team collecting items for people in

Microsoft Office specialist certification at Polk County High Students at Polk County High School are embracing the Microsoft Office Specialist certification. “Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) is the credential required by academia and business, recognized globally as the premier credential chosen by individuals seeking to validate their knowledge, skills and abilities relating to the Microsoft Office applications,” according to Certiport. com. Skylar Curtis, a junior at Polk County High School, recently passed the third required master exam needed to achieve Microsoft
Office Specialist Master Certification. Curtis has passed Word Expert 2010, PowerPoint 2010 and Excel Expert 2010. Additionally, she passed the Word 2010 and Excel 2010. She is scheduled to take the Access 2010 test (the fourth master exam) in December. Curtis is the only Polk County High School student to reach this level of achievement. Landrum Lady Cardinals edge out Polk County by Doug Dickerson
The Landrum girls’ varsity basketball team came out on top over Polk County, 49-47, in their season opener at home Friday night. Landrum fell behind the Wolverines at the end of the first quarter 16-13. This sent them into the locker room at halftime down but they came back stronger at the beginning of the second half. They tied the game and went
slightly ahead going into the third quarter, 34-33. Senior guard Lauren Pitts played great defense to slow down the Wolverines in the fourth quarter to a nail-biting end. Taylor Jenkins scored 15 points on the evening for Landrum. Senior guard Macy Atkins’ valuable free throw shooting also helped lead the Lady Cardinals. For Polk, Hayley Kropp put 13 points away, while Savannah Deaver grabbed 9 points.

Landrum Cardinals blow out Polk County Wolverines by Doug Dickerson
The Landrum boys varsity team came ready to play and showed it on the court with an 89 – 51 victory over the Polk County Wolverines on Friday, Nov. 30. Emotions were high as fans for each team cheered and taunted back and forth across the court. The Cardinals ran out to a quick lead in the first quarter – going up 21-7 over the Wolverines. The Wolverines attempted to close the gap, scoring 21 points in the second quarter, but they couldn’t keep that momentum going. Daniel Bridges led the Cardinals with an outstanding performance. He had 28 points, four blocked shots and nine
rebounds to lead the team. Bridges had plenty of help from teammates. Mark Wilson had 23 points and nine rebounds, while Trevor Walker had 10 points. Truston Whiteside had 12 assists, with nine rebounds. For Polk County, Alec Philpott and Saquan Miller led with 9 points, followed by Ben Stockdale with 7. Anthony Carson and Todd Yoder, both ended the evening with 6. Landrum moves on to play Chapman Tuesday, Dec. 4 at home, while Polk County will play away at East Henderson on Dec. 4. The two teams meet up again on Polk County’s turf this Friday night, Dec. 7.

Driving through Landrum, most weekends, you will see a unique vehicle parked at the Landrum Veterinary Hospital. Jim Parres, aka The Peanut Man, created and designed the look. Parres and his wife, Gail, for many years vacationed in the foothills every summer from Florida. The two liked the area so much they decided to relocate to Campobello 12 years ago. Always self-employed, Parres took great pride in his work. Working on old cars and the ever popular, especially in Florida, muscle cars. “I had a thriving detail shop for over 40 years in Orlando, Fla. My detailing was matched by none,” Parres said. This is obvious when you spot the “Peanut Man’s” truck. The vehicle started out as a 1966 VW car bug, the Parres modified it to a suped-up mini truck. Friends enjoyed eating his peanuts and encouraged him to use his creative abilities. Therefore the peanut vehicle was hatched. From his past business experience Parres says, “I knew I needed flash, a gimmick,” to again be successful. The “flash” is a semi hot rod painted in the colors of a peanut and on most days a very bright outdoor umbrella in the bed of the pick up. Parres and Gail own a show dog, which connected them with Dr. Donna Raines at Landrum Veterinary Hospital. Sharing his idea about the peanut man with Dr. Raines, a barter plan was reached. Parres agreed to perform odd jobs at the hospital for a space in the parking lot along Hwy. 14. Parres enjoys his customers, having established friendship with his regulars. best boiled peanuts.” He always stops to purchase a bag or two for himself and his wife to enjoy while watching evening TV. Parres surprised Belue by stopping by his mothers’ Blue Moon real estate office on Halloween with bags of peanuts. “The best trick or treat of my life,” Belue said. Parres said he “wants people to know you can be a success whatever your story.” Living with severe Dyslexia, Parres cannot read or write. He said he still fights the lifelong stigma of Dyslexia he has lived with for more than 60 years. Parres has overcome the challenging obstacle of this disability proving to himself he can be a success. Every Wednesday you’ll find him driving another type of vehicle, the visitor’s golf cart at St. Luke’s Hospital parking facility. Parres has a sense of humor and he puts it to good use when transporting visitors. “It makes me feel good to bring a smile and laugh to my passengers,” he said.

Goodwin named to Second Wind Hall of Fame Theron Goodwin recently became a member of the Second Wind Hall of Fame, having been nominated by Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity. Second Wind provides recognition for retirees 60 years and over for outstanding volunteer work in area organizations that exemplify the concept that retirement need not be the end of a productive life of service to others and their community, but a “second wind” of opportunity to serve mankind. Goodwin and his wife, Janet, have lived in Polk County since 1998. They moved here from the Glen Falls area of New York, where Theron had a successful career in banking. Since retiring, Goodwin has been very active volunteering in various community organizations including Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity, where he has been on the construction crew as a crew leader as well as a board member. He has also served on committees at the Polk County Community Foundation, has sat on the Polk County 4-H board of directors, helped as a Red Cross volunteer and has worked on several committees and volunteer activities at Tryon Estates. In his spare time, Goodwin enjoys woodworking, fishing, gardening and walking in the woods. – article submitted
