After a tough battle for the opportunity just to play in the fourth round of playoffs, Polk County’s Lady Wolverines won a shutout game against the South Iredell Vikings Saturday, Oct. 27.

Game one started with the Lady Wolverines clearly more organized and solid in their maneuvering from their last match.

Shayln Brown, No. 9, and Makenzie White, No. 5, provided great digs for the team, setting up their teammates for several solid kills.

Polk man arrested for sex abuse earlier this month SBI investigating case

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) arrested a Polk County man earlier this month on sexual abuse charges.

Noelle Talley, public information officer with the N.C. Department of Justice, said the SBI initiated an investigation into allegations

of sexual abuse by Danny Durham, 51, of 3714 Peniel Rd., Tryon, at the request of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 25.

Durham was arrested and charged on Oct. 5 with three counts of first-degree statutory sex abuse, according to the N.C. Department of Justice.

The sheriff’s office received allegations and immediately turned it

over to the SBI because of the possible conflict of a family member being employed by the sheriff’s department.

Also due to the potential conflict, Durham was taken to the Rutherford County Jail where he is still being held under a $500,000 bond.

Additional charges are pending and the investigation is continuing, according to Talley.

Columbus proposes approval process for veteran’s park use

After having groups and individuals request to use Columbus’ Veterans Park, the town is coming up with an application and approval process for its public use.

Columbus Town Council met Thursday, Oct. 18 and reviewed a proposed policy and form for organizations to reserve the park.

Council had some discussion on the issue when Columbus Mayor Eric McIntyre proposed a small deposit for use to avoid town employees having to clean up the park.

“We’ve had groups and individuals contact us for use of veteran’s park for certain occasions and the town doesn’t have any parameters,” McIntyre said.

“I think there should be a deposit saying we’ll clean our trash up and if they don’t we will pay town employees for their time cleaning it up.”

McIntyre suggested a $50 deposit that the organization would get refunded if the park was left in order.

Councilman Ricky McCallister said he doesn’t agree with that.

“If you’ve got girl scouts, boy scouts or little groups they may not have the $50,” said McCallister. “I don’t want to keep them from having the event because they can’t come up with the money. If you have a problem with them doing something then they won’t be able to use it anymore. I just have a hard time with a veteran’s park charging people to use it.”

Council agreed that they want to restrict the park’s use to veterans or similar organizations and not open up the park for individuals.

Councilwoman Margaret Metcalf said as far as for personal use, she thinks the town would be asking for trouble there.

“Anything for veterans or churches is wonderful,” she said.

Council agreed to keep veteran’s park use for organizations and to prohibit any commercial business being done there besides selling products for fundraising.

Council directed town manager Jonathan Kanipe to revise the proposal for council to consider at its November meeting.

Commission candidates respond to Bulletin questions What do you propose to get businesses to come to Polk County? What incentives, if any, would you offer to businesses interested in coming to the county?

EMILY BARTLETT: (D) Many people in our county, over multiple generations have raised families working in local mills that are no longer in existence. My own family worked in mills for generations and it provided an adequate living but as we are all aware, those jobs have left our country without much hope of coming back. I am sure that every county in North Carolina with thinkers far brighter than I am are having the same conversation – what do we replace our mills with? Where do those workers go? How can we and in what areas do we retrain workers for future job security?

The experts from Isothermal Planning and Development and Advantage West just spoke to the ETDC concerning this same topic.

They mentioned several areas of concern – we have a very limited inventory of existing facilities that are applicable to current manufacturing and distribution standards.

We are adjacent to a Tier I county with tremendous tax incentives to entice business to locate there. If manufacturing jobs come back, they will not be our grandparent’s manufacturing jobs. They will require specific training to create a skilled workforce. With fierce competition, we need to make ourselves as competitive and marketable as possible. We’ve got some work to do here in the way of educating our workforce, upgrading our infrastructure and electing a board of commissioners that can work together and put the people of the county first.

MICHAEL GAGE: (R) We need to bring back manufacturing jobs with benefits that can provide a living wage to the

citizens of Polk County at or above past levels. Manufacturing is part of a delicate balance between existing and growing industries such as equestrian, viticulture, tourism and farming. The county needs to address the UDO which is extremely costly to any new business interested in investing in our county. This results in businesses locating in surrounding counties.

The new board of commissioners will have to meet with the EDC board and it’s director, to determine what direction the board is heading. Commissioners and the EDC board must work together to find solutions to bring small business manufacturing jobs back to this county. Some options would be: thru improved infrastructure, or with matching local funds, partnering with state grants such was the case with Carolina Yarn Processors of Tryon.

KEITH HOLBERT: (R) Polk County has the fiber optic capability along with Interstate 26 and highway 74 access to compete with our neighboring counties.

However at present our neighboring counties are capitalizing on these strengths, and so far we have not. We should elect leaders with the financial skills to economically make the future become a reality.

RENEÉ MCDERMOTT: (D) The commissioners’ re-organization of the economic development office, over the criticism of the Republican board members, has resulted in more jobs in Polk County, including textile jobs at CYP. We hired an experienced, trained economic development director, and that has paid off well.

In the past year, our economic development office has documented 180 new businesses opening in Polk County.

We must attract a variety of jobs, not only manufacturing. I support agricultural economic development. I voted to extend a Polk County waterline to the ag (Continued on page 7)

center at the Mill Spring School.

That waterline has helped make the ag center self-sufficient.

When Green River Adventures wanted to expand, I was there to help. I wrote amendments to our ordinances that would allow “natureoriented non-motorized outdoor recreation,” uses compatible with the beauty of the mountains. In record time, the planning board and commissioners unanimously adopted my plan. I stand ready to help other businesses this way.

I support the NC business incentives and the local incentives adopted by the board of commissioners. Those incentives attracted the CYP jobs. We should provide “one-stopshopping” services to help businesses with all local requirements

and permits.

My opponents say that Polk must cut regulations to attract businesses. The evidence says that is not true. Good businesses want a good environment and a good quality of life. Counties my opponents cite as attractive have spent millions of dollars providing industrial sites.

Polk can do that too, if citizens want to raise taxes.

No small thing, of course, in bringing businesses and jobs to Polk County is keeping good, open, clean, stable county government, and keeping debt down and taxes low. I’ve excelled in doing those things.

RUSSELL MIEROP: (D) I feel the BOC should be at all times in support of business suited to Polk County. The BOC should also look for opportunities that would expand opportunities for entrepreneurs, as well as homebased business. Furthermore, local regulation should enhance the opportunity for home-based businesses and locally-suited business.

When the opportunities arise for large manufacturing type employers in the county, I would be in support of incentives that the county could match with funds from Raleigh from the state, as recently done with CYP and the One North Carolina Grant.

TOM PACK: (R) I think I have answered the question of my stand on economic development in my answers to other questions. But let me make it clear that I don’t want to let development run wild, but that we need to foster an environment where we can have growth.

The incentives that I would offer would be based on a case-by-case basis on what the benefits would be to the citizens of the county. I think that we have a lot going for the county in respect to the major highways, fiber optic and work force. We just need to work on reducing the regulations and to work on getting investors to have building sites and building shells ready to offer.

Small earthquake felt nearby

North Carolina residents felt a 2.9 magnitude earthquake this morning. The United States Geological Society confirmed the earthquake occurred 8 miles south of Marion.

Area resident Barbara Madill, who lives off Hwy. 108, said she heard the quake more than she felt it.

“I heard this noise so I moved through the house and heard it again,” Madill said. “It was a sound just like I hear when the wind moves the picnic table on my deck. Even though the wind was blowing, the table hadn’t moved, so I immediately wanted to find out what was going on.”

Madill said a friend on facebook posted a link about the quake almost immediately after.

According to a map provided by the USGS, residents near Polk County could have potentially felt weak shaking at most but it’s more likely that most would not have felt it at all.

Polk’s second half comeback falls short versus Hendersonville

Once again, Polk County came out working hard for another dramatic second half comeback attempt Friday, Oct. 26 against Hendersonville.

The Bearcats, however, came out firing on all cylinders from the beginning with four possessions leading to touchdowns. For the second week in a row the Wolverines defensive shut out the opposition in the second half but this time could not generate enough offense. Down 28-13 at the half, the Wolverines fell literally inches short of keeping a game-tying drive alive. Unable to convert on a couple fourth downs late in the game, Polk suffered a tough 28 -20 loss to the Hendersonville Bearcats.

Coach Bruce Ollis was disappointed but proud of the team effort and fans support.

“I am so proud of our football team and the effort we gave in the second half was incredible. (But) we come up short on two fourth down plays, that being the difference in the ballgame,” Ollis said. “They had four possessions in the first half and four touchdowns. We really did not make many adjustments at half

and had one outstanding player Polk found difficult to return hits from.

Tied at 5-5, the front row began to dominate the game.

Ollis was adamant however that the season was not over.

“But we have other teams to conquer, other hills to climb. I want this football team to understand, the regular season is over, we start our fourth season - the playoff season next Friday night.”

Ollis also commented on the crowd Friday night.

“I could not be more proud of the numbers we brought, I turned around and the whole stands were blue and the band was here; giving great support for us,” he said.

Hendersonville had a total of 371 Polk earned 10 more points to the Viking’s two, and had an amazing win of 25-13.

However, game two became a nail-biting event from the beginning, as the teams tied 3-3. From that point on, the teams remained within one point of each other until the final score, 28-26. The very intense game was wearing on all of the players, and when the Vikings hit a ball out with the score from 27-26, there was a sigh of relief for the Wolverines and their fans.

yards rushing with running back Desean Jackson providing the bulk of the Bearcats’ offensive production as he ran for 233 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown.

Philpott was an incredible 16-19 for 193 yards passing, while con-

necting with five different receivers for two touchdowns. Polk also rushed the ball 35 times for 157 yards for a total of 350.

Despite the Vikings being a strong and comparable team, the Polk County Lady Wolverines were able to maintain their momentum after the first win, which ultimately gave them the edge they needed to finish off the match.

The Polk County Wolverines will play North Surrey on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. for the fifth round of playoffs.

shoebox gifts with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for needy children overseas.

Bid in the live and silent auctions at this year’s Hospice of the Carolina Foothills (HoFC) Boots & Bling Gala.

All proceeds from the Boots & Bling Gala benefit Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, which serves patients and families in Polk, Spartanburg and Greenville Counties. This event kicks off a week of fundraising and awareness during November, which is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. The week following has 29 area restaurants partnering with HoCF in “Dining Out for Hospice.”

“Raising money has to be creative and fun! And so we’re going to be creative and have fun,” said Marybeth Trunk of The Friendship Circle, the women’s volunteer group that works on behalf of Hospice House and is the organizer of Boots & Bling.

The gala will be held at the Hospice Thrift Barn in Landrum on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 6-10 p.m. When you enter you’ll be transported to “The Red Rose Dance Hall,” where you’ll enjoy great food, refreshments, music for dancing and the Live Auction of select items and “experiences” hosted by Polk County’s very own, fast-talking, eagle-eyed auctioneer, Joey Cabinnas.

What will you bid on between dances? Here’s a sampling.

North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature final meeting Senior report from Raleigh The North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (NCSTHL) concluded its final meeting for 2012 in Greensboro. During the two-day meeting, the group received an update on various aging services programs in our state. In addition, they learned about volunteer opportunities in North Carolina. It is also during this meeting when delegates vote on their top five priorities to send to the General Assembly for its 2013 session.

The NCSTHL meets three times a year. During these sessions, the group is updated on the condition of federal and state aging services programs. The final report for the year came from Dennis Streets, director of the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult (DAAS), who explained how the possible federal sequestration would impact programs

and services funded through the Older Americans Act (OAA) and administered by the Administration on Aging. In North Carolina, programs supported by the OAA could lose between $2.3 and $2.7 million in funding. Streets said this could result in nearly 3,000 older adults not being served a hot meal at their local senior center, and nearly 1,000 older adults who may not receive a home-delivered meal.

Currently, in North Carolina, there are more than 12,000 older adults on the waiting list for home- and community-based services such as, in-home aide care, transportation, nutrition and respite care. Streets says that “if sequestration happens, then we will need even more state funding along with strengthened partnerships with businesses and faithbased communities, education and advocacy of policymakers about effective programs, increased col-

Several home and community based programs utilize volunteers to deliver services such as home-delivered meals and many evidence-based health promotion programs. John Thompson, NCSTHL Speaker, stated, “budget cuts to programs that enable older adults to stay in their home and out of long-term care facilities, will present a greater opportunity and need for volunteerism.”

Ellen Whitlock, chair of the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service said her agency has added a new program called NC Eldercare.

Through this community-based service, care teams will make home visits to older adults to address their needs. Whitlock added that her agency is always looking for ways to engage new and older adult volunteers. Currently, North

Carolina has a volunteer rate of 28.5 percent and 203 million hours of service, which equals $4.4 billion worth of service.

During the second day of the meeting, senior Tar Heel Delegates voted on the top five priorities to send to the General Assembly for its 2013 session. The new 2013 legislative priorities for the STHL include: 1) Maintain funding for senior centers; 2) Restore funding to sustain Project CARE; 3) Mandate pre-employment and random drug testing for employees of nursing, adult care homes and adult day care facilities; 4) Strengthen and fund North Carolina’s Adult Protective Services program; 5) Recurring funds of at least $7 million for the Home and Community Care Block Grant.

Lichty puts support behind BBBS Bowl for Kids’ Sake When local luthier and owner of Lichty Guitars, Jay Lichty, heard about the Have a Heart for Big Brothers Big Sisters show last winter, he considered making a heart-shaped ukulele for the silent auction.

Upon reflection, Lichty grew concerned about the sound from such an unusual-shaped instrument, and decided against the project. Instead Lichty, a former Big Brother for more than eight years, offered to donate a beautiful, hand-crafted and hand-painted uke to the cause.

So Lichty’s partner, Corrie Woods, set a plan into action. This gorgeous custom ukulele was to be auctioned in the future, with the proceeds to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. Lichty’s one-of-a-kind instruments are played and praised by musicians far and wide, and this one was meant to be treasured also.

The ukulele is now in the hands of a fortunate private collector, and Lichty Guitars is paying it forward through a major sponsorship for Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl For Kids’ Sake.

Lichty and his former Little Brother spent their outings going hiking, exploring and playing tennis together. For many years they also participated in the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake to help raise funds for the program that brought them together. Although the match came to a successful completion last year, Lichty still feels a bond with the young man, with plans to call and wish him a happy 15th birthday this month.

Very often the Big Brothers Big Sisters friendships continue long after matches close. Some former Bigs and Littles remain connected for life, with Bigs attending college graduations and weddings, and celebrating and supporting other milestone events together along life’s paths.
