House of Flags Museum hosts first-ever exhibit of Eisenhower flags Oct. 10-13 by Leah Justice
For the first time in history, all six flags from the White House during President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration will be together in a single exhibit. The exhibit will be on view at the House of Flags Museum in Columbus from Oct. 10-13 from
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on those days. The flags will likely never be on exhibit again, according to Robert Williamson of the House of Flags. “I’m the only person who has ever examined these three presidential flags,” said Williamson. “Once they go out of this display
they will go back to vaults where they will probably never be seen again…. You’ve got to see them to believe them.” Eisenhower, the nation’s 34th president, was the only president in history to serve under three

PCHS EC program receives donation from Knights 2012 Operation Lamb under way
For the past 11 years, the Knights of Columbus Council #9492 has presented Rhonda Hill, exceptional children (EC) teacher at Polk County High School, with a check for the EC program. Last spring, she accepted a donation of $850 from the 2011 Operation Lamb Project. Hill said the focus of the EC program has always been to address the individual needs of the students, to help them set and reach their goals and to help build their confidence to become responsible young adults. “As new opportunities begin to open up for students with intellectual disabilities, we find ourselves looking more and more at needs related to transitioning from high school to post-secondary,” Hill said. According to Hill, several
four-year colleges and universities are beginning to offer certificate programs especially designed for individuals with developmental/ intellectual disabilities that allow them to fully participate in the college experience. Hill said in response to these new opportunities, high school EC programs are striving to add more instruction and simulation in building personal relationships, conflict resolution, home management, community inclusion and selfadvocacy. The funds donated through the Lamb project of the Knights of Columbus help the EC program obtain materials and create simulations that allow students to practice, under supervision, the skills needed to be successful following high school graduation, Hill said. “This is a benefit to our entire exceptional children’s program because we have the ability to adapt these instructional units to

the full range of individual skill levels and can address the educational, employment, independent living and leisure goals of all our students,” Hill said. The Knights of Columbus’ annual Operation Lamb project supports all those with intellectual

AARP driver safety programs Oct. 10, 13 at Tryon Estates Tryon Estates will host two American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) driver safety programs this week. The first, a four-hour driver safety classroom refresher course, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The course is open to the public at a nominal fee, discounted for AARP mem-
bers. Normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with aging will be discussed. Participants review rules of the road with emphasis on eight driving strategies. Discounts on car insurance may be available to those competing the course. The second program, a “Carfit” event, will be held Sat-
urday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Trained technicicans will work with drivers to ensure they properly “fit” in their personal vehicles, using a professionally developed 12-point checklist to make adjustments and offer suggestions that will improve safety behind the steering wheel.

Wolverines continue winning streak against Avery, 28-7 by Fulton Hampton
The Polk County Wolverines kept their conference championship hopes alive with a 28-7 win over the Vikings of Avery. For the third week in a row, the score may not have been indicative of the closeness of the game. Avery helped the Wolverines by fumbling three times on the night. The Vikings consistently moved the ball down field only to give it up on a fumble within the 30-yard line; twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth. “If they don’t turn the ball over some… it’s a close football game,” Coach Bruce Ollis said. The Wolverines struck first early when Alec Philpott found a wide-open J.C. Suddeth for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 7:59 left in the first quarter. But the night would be dominated by the run, as Polk continued to rely on the run more than the pass. “It’s the third week in a row we have not thrown the ball a lot and had not needed to because we have been rushing the ball,” Ollis said. “When we rush the ball it keeps it away from the other team, and I think that’s positive for us.” Polk rushed the ball 38 times
for 236 yards and two TDs and passed 5-8 with 141 yards and two touchdowns, total yardage 377 yards total offense. A big part of the rushing attack was Tyler Jackson (10 carries for 89 yards). Jackson had the second score for the Wolverines at the 3:05 mark of the second quarter with a 46-yard touchdown as Polk went up 13-0. Ollis commented on Jackson’s development at the tailback position: “I told him, ‘You looked like a tailback. You set your blocks up, you cut the ball back some and used good vision – I was very pleased with that.’” Avery came back with a long drive of its own, aided by two long pass plays, with quarterback Trey Jackson sneaking it over to cut the lead to the 13-7 halftime score. But in the third quarter, Polk went on top for good, as Jackson hauled in a short pass from a scrambling Philpott. With excellent downfield blocking and a good cut back, Jackson turned it into 68-yard score. Philpott played his usual outstanding game (19-108 yards rushing, 5-8 141 yards passing). He closed out the scoring with a

to do, (but) it’s pretty good when you can not play as well as you are capable and still win the game,” Ollis said. The Vikings slip to 2-6 and remain winless in the conference at 0-4. The Wolverines improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the WHC and will travel to Thomas Jefferson on Friday, Oct. 12.

Landrum loses defensive battle against Chesnee, 17-0 by Joey Millwood
Heading into the LandrumChesnee matchup, one might have thought it would’ve been about offense. That wasn’t the case in the battle for the top spot in the 1-2A region on Friday night. Instead, the game turned into a defensive battle as Chesnee made enough plays to win the game 17-0. After winning three straight consecutive weeks, the Cardinals fell short against rival Chesnee.
The Cardinals’ defense did a good job on an Eagle offense that had been soaring over opposing defenses. The problem was the Eagles did a good job on defense as well. Landrum was held in check during the game, and the offense never found the endzone. Starting quarterback Aaron Bryant returned and ran for 106 yards. Peyton McCarter added 34 yards on the ground. Bryant also passed for 59 yards.

Linda Adams Linda West Adams, 89, of 17 Pine Crest Lane, Tryon, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 in the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum. Born in Campobello, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Sally Van Patton West. She was the widow of Robert Lee Adams, who died in
2012. Mr. Clarkson was born and raised in the Pittsburg, Pa. area, where he graduated from the University of Pittsburg, met his wife and started their family. He served two tours of duty in the Air Force and spent his career working for GTE Sylvania as an industrial engineer and corporate manager. Jack and Marilyn Clarkson
retired to Seabrook Island, S.C. in 1980 and then moved to Tryon Estates in 2004. They were members of Congregational Church in Tryon. Mr. Clarkson was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening in his later years of retirement. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn; two sons, Thomas of Charlottesville, Va. and Robert of Syracuse, N.Y.;
two grandchildren and a greatgrandson. Mr. Clarkson was preceded in death by his brother, David, of Stroudsburg, Pa. A memorial service in honor of Mr. Clarkson is being planned at Tryon Estates. Hummingbird questions and answers Over the last couple of years of writing this bird column, I have had many people write to tell me their bird stories, ask for birding information or ask me questions about either the birds in their area or specific bird questions. Yes, it’s that timely hummingbird question again. “When do l take my hummingbird feeder down?” The truth is very simple and straight-forward. Hummingbirds, like all other birds, migrate south by instinct at the same time each year. It is not a single external factor that causes them to travel over the Gulf of Mexico into Central America, but a combination of many things, such as changing day-lengths, seasonal temperatures and food supply. Food is very important for migrant birds, as they need an abundant supply in order to

Angela Lynn Mills Blowe, 35, of 101 Windswept Lane, Columbus died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Columbus. Born Oct. l9, 1976 in Honolulu, Hawaii, she was raised in the military. Obesity laws could be in your future Here’s a headline you may soon hear as our healthcare costs continue to explode: “Take Your Health into Your Own Hands or the Government Will Do It For You!� Actually that wouldn’t be a very big surprise, as America’s obesity rates are rising with cases of Adult Type II Diabetes being reported by doctors for kids aged 10 and younger. Rising healthcare costs for preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers are now getting the attention of state and federal legislators. We’ve already seen the mayor of New York City get laws passed that require all NYC restaurants to list the caloric content on their menus and outlaw sodas sold in cups larger than 16 ounces. Do you really believe that the federal government isn’t paying attention? Of course they are, and it may not be long before we see laws or taxes to regulate our personal lives right down to what we can eat. I certainly won’t be surprised to see a new “junk food� tax coming down the road, because as things begin to cost

Just the $46 cost of “killing� yourself with cigarettes should lower the number of U.S. smokers, don’t you think? So imagine the government going national with taxes on French fries or sodas making you think twice before buying junk food. Listen, I know that people who don’t take care of themselves will ultimately cost the taxpayers – you and me – for their healthcare issues as they develop one or more of the top diseases of obesity – heart disease, cancer and diabetes – but unless there’s an incentive, besides being healthy, the plan won’t work. People who want to eat junk food will do so, just like smokers who wish to smoke do so. Hey, I have an idea. How about a tax credit for going to

Rather than penalizing your behavior, the federal government can track and add the tax incentive back into your refund or apply it to any taxes you owe. Now that’s positive reinforcement, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like money. Listen, I’m not the reincarnation of Steve Jobs, but I’ll bet someone is working on a behavior tracking idea just like this in his or her garage or basement right now. So in 10 years, when their stock IPO comes out, I can point to this article and say, I told you so.
