Letter to the Editor

Print Bites on Societal Issues To the editor: • Privatize Medicare, Mr. Ryan? Just another opportunity for the fat cats to rip us off. When will the billionaires amass enough money and power to let the middle class and poor live? • The amount of money spent on the 2012 election is disgraceful. It would reduce the national debt; feed the hungry; provide medical care for the impoverished. Secret, unlimited corporate contributions, thanks to a conservative-built Supreme Court are a black hole for Democracy. We must work to maintain a government of the people, by the people and for the people. • Florida led the way in disenfranchising American voters. Photo IDs and other voting restrictions are aimed at the poor, disabled, elderly and ethnic minorities. The federal government must move

against such laws instates which have adopted them. • An educated, untrained, malnourished, medically deprived people cannot maintain a democracy or an economy. So watch what the politicos want to cut. • Abortion is not a legitimate issue. Do I approve of abortion? Yes, when pregnancy is the result of a father, brother, uncle, cousin raping a 12-year-old; when pregnancy is the result of any rape; exposure to AIDS; when it endangers the life of the mother for any medical reason; when it is determined that the fetus is so badly malformed that no quality of life is possible. This is not a question for government. This is a question between a patient and her physician. • When America puts money and manpower into rebuilding the crumbling infrastructure, such as dangerous bridges, our country will regain its strength, economically and morally. - Maryneal Jones, Columbus

draws that feed the valley. Fly fishing for wild trout in the mountains of Western North Carolina (WNC) is as about a relaxing of an experience as one can have. Small by most people’s standards, wild rainbow, brown and native brook trout are treasured guests in our national park. The “experience” is of far more value than the fight. The wary prey must be stalked, and is keen on what fly they will take. But when done correctly, you can catch numbers of them. All of which, by my opinion,

should be released. Directions to Catalochee valley are: take interstate 40 west to exit 20. Travel a short distance on Hwy. 276 and turn right on Cove Creek Rd. and travel about 11 miles following signs. The road narrows to a single lane gravel road for much of the way so don’t be in a hurry. Don’t forget a camera, binoculars and food and drinks. McDonald’s is not over the hill. The best times to me for viewing the elk are late in the evening, or a cloudy/ rainy day.

To the editor: This is to express thanks first of all for our Polk County Planning Board for considering the proposed changes to the slope ordinance and their choosing the 25 percent slope threshold instead of the potentially more harmful 30 percent that a few citizens lobbied for so the proposal now awaits being approved, rejected, or amended by our county commissioners. Since the old ordinance in place now is possibly a 15 to 20 percent threshold, I also give thanks for our county engineer, Dave Odom, for giving his opinion to the planning board, that he believed 20 percent to be the threshold he would pick for investigation of soil and other conditions for building and that 25 percent is a very steep slope. Further thanks to planning board member, David Smith, who researched and shared with the board, that a 25 percent threshold is common in mountain areas and that in many of them, 25 percent marks the slope at which development is stopped,

25 percent threshold(cell) chosen (828)slope 817-0966 by the planning board will not potentially harm any resources in our county. It is simply a threshold for soil investigation to take place 1x1 for safety reasons. Those in favor of12/21,22,27,28,29 the increased 30 percent perhaps view this 25 percent as a cutoff for development which is not the truth. There are long term county concerns regarding issues such as fires spreading faster in higher elevations and added expenses for fire department and EMS regarding these as well as long-term effects to county streams and ground lAnDFill water, to mention a few. The planning boardSeRviCe and David Smith have (Phil) - for 859-2054 my appreciation this important work on our behalf. 8am-6pm With a presidential election coming up, we certainly are bombarded with partisan issues that complicate 1x1 our decision process. On the more local level, we have 2/14 topics like the slopes which could 3/10,13,also 16 be made into potentially partisan issues with our local elections which I personally consider not to be in the best interest of all residents in the county, nor do I think that a matter like this should be unduly influenced by any other form of gain by those who might stand to profit from a slope ordi-
