More about our Sheltered Development in the picturesque village of Chirnside

The Loaning, Chirnside

The Loaning is situated at the heart of the picturesque village of Chirnside, an ideal location for anyone seeking a rural living experience in a community with so much to offer its residents.

The Loaning is a sheltered development, combining independent living with some support, and a warm and friendly environment. There are 20 one-bedroom flats, 1 two-bedroom flat and 4 studio flats, spread over two floors with a lift for accessibility. Each flat has fitted kitchen cabinets with space for white goods (customer’s own) and a shower wet room.

The bright and comfortable communal lounge is ideal for meeting with neighbours, welcoming visitors, and a place to gather together for social events. The Loaning has a laundry area, with washing and drying facilities and a secure storage space for mobility scooters.

The development has two guest bedrooms, one twin with en-suite bathroom, and one single. These are available to visiting family members and friends and are charged at a rate of £20 per night.

Well maintained gardens and a summer house can be enjoyed by all residents, with a small area set aside for those who would like to get their hands dirty and do a bit of gardening of their own. A great past time for a healthy mind and body! Wi-Fi is available throughout the development for residents and visitors.

Community Living

The Loaning has occasional and seasonal activities to encourage residents to socialise and stay active, but there are also a range of services, events and community activities available in the village.

Chirnside has a vibrant community centre that holds coffee mornings, bingo nights and other seasonal events.

The local bowling club also provides coffee mornings and bingo nights. Other clubs available include boxing and football, and the local tennis court, which is adjacent to the development, has recently been renovated.

Security

Our colleagues are on site Monday-Friday 8.00am-4.00pm. Staffing hours are clearly displayed in the development.

There is a secure entry system at the main door to the development. Each room in the flat is equipped with a pull-cord alarm linked to a call centre for emergency assistance. Every flat has a colleague call system that connects directly to the development coordinator’s office.

A smoke alarm is installed in all our flats.

Local Services

Chirnside is served by a local supermarket, a mobile bank, library, optician, pharmacy and butcher. A fish monger visits The Loaning weekly, as well as Wiltshire Farm Foods and Oak House, who deliver frozen ready meals. The village shop with a post office is just a short walk through the village.

The nearest GP and dentist is in Duns, about 6 miles away. Chirnside is situated on the number 60 Borders bus route Galashiels to Berwick-upon-Tweed and takes 17 minutes to reach Duns. For other journeys, there is Pingo, an on-demand bus service that allows customers to book a shared journey in the Berwickshire area.

There are two pubs, one of which offers food and accommodation and a variety of social activities.

For dog owners, Chirnside has a dog groomer and for keen walkers, there is the David Hume Walk which starts at the information board, just south of the village.

The village has two garages, which offer MOTs.
