The Cultural District is shining!

More than 2000 events, exhibitions, and programs took place in the District in 2005 — a 25 percent increase from the last year—attracting over 1.3 million people. Construction was in full swing for The Encore on 7th, the Cultural District’s newest residential property overlooking the Allegheny River. Building upon the vision of Jack Heinz to leverage real estate assets and the arts to breath life into a once-downtrodden

people in 2005 than ever before, bringing thousands in touch with the District’s vibrant visual arts scene and developing new audiences. Wood Street and SPACE galleries continued to capture headlines with such exhibitions as Amorphous Robots. The region’s largest New Year’s Eve festival, First Night Pittsburgh, presented in collaboration with the Three Rivers Arts Festival, entertained over 20,000 people and was the recipient of First Night International’s Creative Programming Award for Squonk Opera’s innovative production.

Downtown, the Trust’s five-year strategic plan for 2006 – 2010 was near completion in 2005, establishing an upward course for continued development and promotion of the Cultural District. It is our pleasure to report that, along with momentum moving Pittsburgh toward its next Renaissance, the future of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Cultural District is bright.

Looking back to 2005, the artists that appeared on our stages and were featured in our galleries continued to be among the most gifted and sought after in the world. This past year saw the return of the Globe Theatre of London in a phenomenal production at the Trust’s O’Reilly Theater of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, which was named the number one theatrical production of the year by The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. The Pittsburgh Dance Council presented the internationally-acclaimed Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and went on to sell out more performances in 2005 than in its 35-year history. PNC Broadway welcomed the Pennsylvania debut of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, selling out over 50 performances and breaking box office records, attracting close to 150,000 attendees. The Trust’s Gallery Crawl drew more

The Cabaret located in the Trust’s Theater Square complex enjoyed its first full year of operations with a highly-successful run of the Civic Light Opera’s Forever Plaid, followed by late-night entertainment each evening programmed by our friends at Pittsburgh CLO. Downbeat Jazz, the annual free summer series presented by the Trust’s Education and Community Engagement Department, captivated jazz enthusiasts well into the winter when the series was extended indoors to the Cabaret and Backstage Bar. A catalyst for urban development, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has reached a pivotal point in its history with a new focus on making the Cultural District into a thriving 24/7 neighborhood. With The Encore on 7th— Downtown Pittsburgh’s first new residential building in 35 years— close to completion, the Trust’s Cultural District Riverfront Development takes center stage.

District partners—Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra—to our dedicated and talented Trust team of employees, we extend our gratitude and thanks.

Critical planning for the Riverfront Development took place in 2005 with an international forum hosted by the Trust. Delegates from Shaping the Vision brainstormed best uses for the six acres of prime real estate on the Downtown waterfront, helping to shape the process by which this land will be developed.

The Trust’s most financially ambitious project since its 1984 inception, the Riverfront Development is projected to exceed $500 million in overall expenditures and serve as an international model for the successful integration of function, design and art in urban living.

As we continue to create positive, tangible change in downtown Pittsburgh, the advancement of both the Trust and the Cultural District is made possible by a very large supporting cast and crew. challenging project to date, an initiative that will be the keystone of the Trust’s strategic plan for the next five years: The Cultural District Riverfront Development

One of the largest development sites in downtown Pittsburgh, the Riverfront Development comprises six acres in the heart of the Cultural District bounded by Fort Duquesne Boulevard, Penn Avenue and Seventh and Ninth Streets, overlooking the Allegheny River. The development aims to combine residential uses with unique retail offerings, parking facilities, restaurants, pedestrian plazas, parks, public art projects and enhanced connections to the riverfront.

Shaping the Vision The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust hosted a two-day forum, entitled “Shaping the Vision,” in June 2005 to begin planning for this impressive undertaking. In a series of brainstorming sessions, dozens of delegates from the region and around the world explored the future development possibilities that would continue trans4

forming a former red light district into an artsbased residential and mixed-use neighborhood.

The conversations and discussions to come served to further the identity of the Cultural District and to invent the next generation of urban living.

B. Joseph Pine II, management advisor to Fortune 500 companies and author of The Experience Economy: Work Is Theatre & Every Business a Stage, and Richard Farson, psychologist, co-founder and president of the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute and author of Management of the Absurd: Paradoxes in Leadership and Whoever Makes the Most Mistakes Wins: The Paradox of Innovation gave the keynote speeches during the forum.

Local, national and international delegates represented diverse fields, ranging from architectural design and urban redevelopment to the arts and entertainment. Among the delegates, Harvey Lichtenstein, chairman of the BAM Development Corporation in Brooklyn, New York, commented on his impressions of the city’s art and entertainment district, “I have admired Pittsburgh’s Cultural District from afar.

The Cultural District is the driving force for the city of Pittsburgh, invigorating the urban environment and the city itself. The cultural activity in Pittsburgh is extraordinary.”

Traveling from Taipei, Taiwan, Ti-nan Chi, principal of Z Architects, remarked on three areas of consideration for the Eighth Street Block Development: “First, if we want cultures to last a long time, we need to think about subcultures. Young people are very important for the future of the Cultural District. Also, this project is a chance to create an innovative model for the new American city, and lastly we need to think about the ingenuity of the place, the tactics of everyday life.”

A dozen teams representing over 100 developers, architects, artists and design professionals from the U.S. and abroad submitted their qualifications to compete for the creation of the CDRD final plan, design and development. The CDRD competition process began in the fall 2005 and was made possible through generous support from The Heinz Endowments and The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.

The Encore on 7th Construction continued in 2005 on The Encore on 7th, a striking 18-story building offering 151 rental units with outstanding amenities and spectacular riverside and city views. Located at 100 7th Street in the heart of the downtown Cultural District, The Encore on 7th is a collaborative effort between The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Lincoln Property Company of Dallas, Texas, with construction by Mascaro Construction. The project is financed by the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, Bank of America and the Trust. The first residents will occupy apartments in spring of 2006. The Encore on 7th is a shining example of the Trust’s long standing commitment to transforming the 14-block Cultural District into a thriving, “24/7” neighborhood centered on the arts and urban living.

The Best in Performing Arts

On September 17, 2005, the Cultural Trust held its annual gala, Jazzmatazz: An Artful Fusion of Performance and Place, co-chaired by Ken and Tracy Milani. This event, sponsored by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, along with supporting sponsor The PNC Financial Services Group, featured cocktails and conversation in the Cultural District. Guests mingled under the Benedum Center marquee, then dined in 1920s-inspired dinner clubs at the Cabaret at Theater Square, O’Reilly Theater and Dominion Lobby. The evening concluded with lively Jazz Age entertainment.

The season ended with a spectacular finish as the world-famous Radio City Rockettes brought their eye-high kicks and Christmas Spectacular to the Benedum Center for an unprecedented 54 performances, drawing over 150,000 patrons. The economic impact of the show is estimated between $15 and $20 million. One third of the audience comprised new visitors to the Cultural District, many of whom would later purchase tickets to other District events such as ones performed by the Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

The season continued with rave reviews for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, co-presented by The August Wilson Center for African American Culture, as well as accolades for Israel Contemporary Dance Theater. The season closed with tap-dancer extraordinaire Savion Glover performing for two sold-out nights; the resounding success and momentum of the spring carried into the fall with capacity crowds at Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, co-presented with The August Wilson Center for African American Culture and Limón Dance Company. In all, the Dance Council sold out more performances in 2005 than in its 35 year history.

Pittsburgh was one of only five cities to host this prestigious and globally acclaimed theater company.

Need Headline Under the direction of artist and curator Murray Horne, Wood Street Galleries is a visual arts project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, exhibiting contemporary works, often of a multimedia or technically cutting-edge nature, by internationally acclaimed artists. The Galleries are located at 601 Wood Street, occupying two floors above the Wood Street “T” Station. All Wood Street exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Wood Street Galleries also houses the Trust's shared office space program, which provides a home and tools for the following small arts organizations: Afrika Yetu, Inc. Breakthrough, Inc.

Need Headline for SPACE Located at 812 Liberty Avenue, SPACE is a gallery that is owned and operated by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and curated by Sharmila Venkatasubban. Featuring works in multi-disciplines by local and regional artists, SPACE, in 2005, had over 40 artist exhibits and performances and 12,795 visitors, a 36 percent increase in attendance from last year.

Commemortative Objects: Divine Intervention Ministries

April 22 – May 6, 2005 SPACE and the Divine Intervention Ministries collaborated to explore the commemorative practices of families who lost loved ones to acts of violence. These installations of crafted objects, ready-mades and documentation reflected the processes group members use to work through issues of faith, grief, healing and remembrance.

November 11 – December 31, 2005 The artists in this exhibition ask questions about how we affect change through the simplest actions. Each project initiates dialogue about what we choose to see, say, do, buy, and think — and how we work through our most quotidian problems.

Future Tenant Future Tenant, a project of Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute for the Management of Creative Enterprise and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, provides a laboratory setting for artists, arts managers and audiences. The space, which is provided by the Trust, is managed by students from the Master of Arts Management program, a joint program of Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts and the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management. In 2005, Future Tenant featured over 75 artists in the visual, performing and literary arts.

Urban Space: A BridgeSpotters Gallery, 709 Penn Avenue

707 Penn Avenue, a Trust-owned property, provides office space for ProArts, a Pittsburgh arts services organization that provides education programs, ticketing, marketing services, grants, business and legal consulting and other services to hundreds of area area arts organizations. The property houses a gallery on the ground floor.

Exhibits at 707 Penn Gallery during 2005 included:

Located at 709 Penn Avenue, Urban Space was founded by artist Kamau Ware, with space provided by the Trust. In 2005, Urban Space attracted 3,000 visitors to the gallery and workshop space for artists, writers and performers.

Cabaret at Theater Square

Café Zao Creating culinary fusions based in Portuguese culture, Chef Toni Pais welcomed approximately 24,000 diners to Café Zao in 2005. In collaboration with the Cultural Trust’s Cabaret at Theater Square, Chef Pais branched out with three new wine and food tasting events in the Cabaret. In April, the restaurant celebrated its first anniversary with a preview dinner of Portuguese cuisine and wine. Chef Pais would later present that summer at the prestigious James Beard House in New York.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust began programming a mix of live musical concerts to complement the successful run of Pittsburgh CLO’s Forever Plaid.

The Carolyn M. Byham Studio, housed in the Cultural Trust’s Theater Square complex, opened in 2004 as a remote, live broadcast studio for WQED 89.3 FM. In 2005, WQED 89.3 FM broadcasted 1,840 hours direct from the heart of the Cultural District and conducted 124 live interviews with such notable guests as Billy Boyd, actor in The Lord of the Rings; author Salmon Rushdie; trumpeter Doc Severinson; violinist Sarah Chang; conductor Sir Neville Marriner; and pianist Andre Watts among many others.

ArtSMART: Programs for Educators Tix for Teachers In 2005, more than 6,500 area educators took advantage of discounted tickets to performances, meet-and-greet opportunities with artists, a biannual newsletter, thank you gifts, and a special reception.

Teacher Workshops Workshops included visual arts experiences, collaborations with select universities, and the Kennedy Center Partners in Education, which was expanded last year to Pittsburgh Public Schools providing access to the Kennedy Center's renowned educational resources.

2005 Education and Community Highlights Downbeat in the District Draws a diverse audience to Katz Plaza in the Cultural District for free, summer jazz performances, from local jazz legends to up-and-coming local musicians.

Globe Theatre Workshops

This year marked the second year of the Trust’s free, quarterly showcase of art and entertainment in the Cultural District. Over 4,000 people attended Galley Crawls in 2005.

In partnership with The Pittsburgh Public Theater, two Globe Education practitioners visited 20 schools spanning six counties for a series of hands-on Shakespeare workshops

Theater Arts Workshop

In Fall 2005, over 150 area educators visited the Cultural District, touring District theaters and learning more about The Trust’s educational resources.

High school students had the opportunity to learn about various aspects of theater, including make-up, costume, lighting, sound, critiquing, stage combat, among others.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Masterclass

ArtsMASTERS Masterclasses/Workshops With direct access to performers and artists in many disciplines (dance, theater, music, etc.), students and community members come faceto-face with the individuals that create and perform what’s on our stages.

Lectures/Cast Sessions Participants get to “know the show before they go” in engaging pre-performance talks and receive the opportunity to interact with members of the performing arts company through lively Q&A sessions with the cast members.

Established in 1999, the Trust’s Shared Services Department has forged a platform for collaboration within a core group of regional arts organizations based in the Cultural District, including: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Shared Services provides joint programs for healthcare coverage, credit card processing, printing, office supplies, and other services and commodities to improve customer service, build revenue and lower operating expenses. There was no shortage of Shared Services’ successes in 2005, including: Since its inception in 1999, Shared Services’ joint programs in healthcare, credit card processing, printing, office supplies, and other services and commodities have achieved direct savings and cost avoidance of approximately $2.5 million.

The Tessitura Arts Enterprise Software was implemented as the patron relationship management software solution for Cultural District ticketing, fundraising and marketing.

Shared Services presented its model to arts groups in Buffalo, Cleveland, Dallas and Phoenix/Scottsdale to help their respective communities realize greater operating efficiencies.

An article in the November 2005 issue of Arts Reach featured the smART Database and praised Shared Services for its high level of collaboration among arts organizations in the Cultural District.

Given the success of the joint holiday promotional catalogs over the last three years, Cultural District marketing leaders added spring and fall catalogs in 2005 to increase the District’s visibility and audience.

Shared Services executed bi-weekly e-mail updates to patrons with a link to event listings of Cultural District performances.

Shared Services hosted the second annual Collaboration, Continuation, and Cooperation, celebration on December 20th, bringing together the boards of trustees and staff members from all six Cultural District organizations involved in the Shared Services project.

The joint promotional direct mailers were sent in Spring, Fall and during the Holidays

Pittsburgh CLO

Harris Theater

Since 1946, the Pittsburgh CLO has been the driving force behind the region’s thriving musical theater scene. Pittsburgh CLO garners support from nearly 200,000 patrons each year.

Renovated by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in 1999, the Harris Theater showcases independent and foreign films presented by Pittsburgh Filmmakers. In 2005, the Harris had 579 screenings and 10,000 visitors.

Formerly The African American Cultural Center, The August Wilson Center for African American Culture (AWC) enhances knowledge and deepens appreciation of the arts, culture and history of African Americans in Western Pennsylvania and people of African descent worldwide through engaging exhibitions, performing arts and educational programs.

The AWC broke ground in 2005 at the site of its future, permanent home and gallery space at the intersection of Liberty Avenue, 10th Street and William Penn Way. In June 2005, the AWC opened 209/9th Street Gallery which attracted 2,000 visitors.

The Trust’s Connection to the Public The Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company In its second full year of performances at the Jackman Building, 542 Penn Avenue in the Cultural District, The Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company continued to offer notable, intimate theatrical productions to diverse audiences totaling 4,500 in 2005.

Bricolage Bricolage uses the distinctive resources of the Pittsburgh region to create theatrical events that stimulate a heightened sense of audience involvement. In the fall of 2005, Bricolage moved to its new home in the Cultural District at the Trust’s 937 Liberty Avenue property.

Drawing a steady audience of several hundred visitors to the District, Bricolage held half a dozen events, including two premieres in December: The B.U.S. Project and Mission: Delight for First Night, featuring 42 local artists.

Assisting the Trust in technology planning and employment, the Trust’s Information Systems Department, headed by Chief Information Officer Jonathan Edmonds, keeps a number of non-profit arts organizations connected to each other and the world.

Three Rivers Arts Festival Founded in 1959 by the Women's Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Three Rivers Arts Festival is dedicated to connecting the community to the arts. The Festival’s administrative offices are located in the Trust’s property at 937 Liberty Avenue.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s website, www.pgharts.org, welcomed nearly 2,000,000 visitors in 2005, representing a 66 percent increase from the previous year. Over six million pages were viewed from the site, which offered expanded functionality including video and audio previews of coming events and better integration with the ticketing system to provide enhanced customer service.

Also managing the Cultural District’s website, www.culturaldistrict.org, the Information System’s Department reports that over 800,000 visitors came to the site last year with many browsing the site for over 10 minutes per visit.

Most notable was the addition of online single ticket sales for all six Cultural District organizations under the Shared Services’ Department, offering one stop online shopping for events and activities within the District.

Perhaps one of the most visible components of your visit to the Cultural District, the outdoor video boards and indoor plasma screens at Theater Square delivered more than 2 million

messages from over 30 organizations to Cultural District visitors. The outdoor boards also served to provide a live simulcast for the Pittsburgh CLO’s Gene Kelly Awards and a countdown to 2006 during First Night Pittsburgh.

Beyond the publicly accessed technology-based services, the Information Systems Department also serves a number of non-profit Cultural District arts organizations with ad hoc support of their computer and printing systems.
