Over the course of the past year, we witnessed the profound ways in which the arts can impact our community. With each performance, we were reminded of the power of the arts to change lives, lift spirits, and open minds. As proud stewards of the arts in our thriving Cultural District, we strive to share the finest performing and visual arts experiences with diverse and growing audiences. This year, by presenting the 2018 Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, our tradition of shaping the future of American art continued by showcasing new art forms and cultivating new audiences. For eight weeks this past fall, the Cultural District became a hub for never-before-seen works of art from around the globe. Featuring the work of 30 artistic companies from 20 countries, the Festival offered attendees a different lens through which to view the world. To ensure the continued success of our entire roster of festivals, thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor, the Trust created a dedicated festival endowment—the earnings of which will support the free and amazing offerings Trust festivals add to the community. We also spent much of the last year—and beyond—preparing for a global phenomenon of a different kind—the Pittsburgh
premiere of Broadway blockbuster, Hamilton, which opened at the Benedum Center in January 2019. With more than 88,000 people seeing the show during its four-week run, Hamilton proved to be a major driver of economic growth in our region, bringing many first-time audiences to the Cultural District. Our commitment to excellence encompasses not only our on-stage programming, but also the holistic experience of our guests. This past year, to keep pace with national best practices, the Trust implemented enhanced security measures at our largest venues. We also sought to enrich the guest experience with the addition of front-of-house ambassadors, supplementing the work of our wonderful volunteer ushers. The achievements of the past year would not have been possible without the support of organizations and individuals who share our vision and enhance our impact: our outstanding resident companies, our talented administrative staff, our generous sponsors, donors, and members, our supportive elected officials, our deeply committed Board of Trustees, our extraordinary team of volunteers and front-of-house staff, and of course, you—our dedicated partners, supporters, and audiences. THE POWER OF ONE TO UNITE PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FIRSTS
With the 2018 Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust sought to elevate its role as a presenter of diverse and globally-minded arts programming. Building upon the success of past Festivals, this year’s was the most ambitious and far-reaching project to date. For eight weeks, from September 21st to November 11th, the Trust presented an expanded showcase of cutting edge performing and visual arts attractions from around the globe— including U.S., North American, and world premieres. The Festival featured the work of more than 30 international companies and artists, hailing from over 20 countries across six continents—and included representation from Pittsburgh’s own arts community. The vision for the 2018 Festival of Firsts was shaped by the Trust’s own 12-person curatorial team, who were joined by Quantum Theatre’s artistic director, Karla Boos, who served as Guest Curator. Together, this diverse team traveled extensively during the 18-month planning process, discovering art that transcended geographical borders and united people across cultural barriers. Through the exploration of universal themes, these works of art reminded us that there is

2018 PERFORMING ARTS HIGHLIGHTS The performing arts remain critical to the rich quality of life enjoyed in our region. Whether it’s theater, dance, live music, or other forms of expression, the arts allow audiences to broaden their perspectives, deepen their sense of self, and celebrate the diversity that surrounds them. At their best, the performing arts revitalize the human spirit.
THE POWER OF ONE TO UPLIFT PERFORMING ARTS
As the Trust has continued to enhance the quality of its arts programming, we’ve reached record numbers in attendance and subscribers. The 2018-19 season of PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh boasted the highest number of subscribers ever. Similarly, the Pittsburgh Dance Council series also enjoyed its highest level of subscribers—along with a 31% increase in attendance since 2015. As part of the Trust’s ongoing mission to expand accessibility, Pittsburgh became the first market outside of New York City to present a sensory-friendly performance of the Broadway smash, Wicked. This special performance enabled children and adults on the autism spectrum, along with their families, to enjoy the show in a comfortable environment that was sensitive to their needs.
Aurélian Bory’s Espæce utilized acrobats, dancers, actors, and singers— along with a flexible wall and the manipulation of mathematical tools—to highlight an innovative approach to theater.
For the second year in a row, the Trust partnered with the Pittsburgh Winery to produce “A Benedum Christmas: Home for the Holidays,” a special concert featuring homegrown musical talent. A diverse lineup of 15 local artists, musicians, and bands came together to celebrate the
holidays and the city we call home.

2018 VISUAL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS The Trust continued to bring innovative and thought-provoking arts exhibitions to the Cultural District. The celebration of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts infused a special energy into our art galleries, and contributed to increased attendance and engagement. All of the Trust’s visual arts programming is available for free to the public.

As part of the Festival of Firsts, Wood Street Galleries hosted the world premiere of NONOTAK, which was the venue’s second-highest attended show ever. NONOTAK, a light and sound installation, created an ethereal, immersive and dreamlike environment meant to envelop the viewer. A collaboration between visual artist, Noemi Schipfer, and architect/musician, Takami Nakamoto, NONOTAK capitalized on its unique approach to space and sound, and its incorporation of kinetic art.

SPACE welcomed the world premiere of Machine Culture during the Festival of Firsts, which featured the work of a group of young artists fascinated by the mechanical. The cutting-edge installation used the kinetic qualities of gears in motion and motorized moving parts to produce both ironic and amusing results. Curator Murray Horne noted: “Machine Culture operates with varying degrees of autonomy, control, function, and dysfunction. Together, these artists orchestrate materials, reconfiguring them into ‘objects of fascination.’”

In collaboration with The Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University, the Trust’s visual arts department presented Marx@200, an exhibit inspired by the 200th birthday of Karl Marx (May 2018). Curated by Kathy M. Newman and Susanne Slavick, Marx@200 featured more than 35 works by artists from around the world. The five Marx@200 posters on display in Tito Way are extensions of the Marx@200 show exhibited in SPACE. The artworks represented a diverse range of perspectives on Marx and his critique of inequality and capitalism, as well as his influence on political movements and regimes.

THE POWER OF ONE TO BUILD COMMUNITY FESTIVALS

Few events have the power to bring people together like festivals do. In 2018, in addition to the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, the Cultural Trust continued to host a diverse range of festivals that united the community around a shared love of the arts. The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival welcomed Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Mavis Staples, as its headlining act. Known as the “original Chicago soul Sister,” Mavis Staples was the lead singer of The Staples Singers—considered one of the musical voices of the civil rights movement during the 1960s. Decades later, as part of the Dollar Bank 2018 Three Rivers Arts Festival, Staples performed classic hits, along with songs from her latest album, “If All I Was Was Black.” In addition, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival —which is free to the public—provided an opportunity for the Trust to partner with the “Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh” program. Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh is a joint grantmaking program created and managed by The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments. The program is committed to bolstering community awareness of the rich history and current presence of excellent black arts presentation and production in the region. This year, several artists were awarded Festival Support Grants and appeared throughout the Festival—in the Artist Market, on stages, and with art installations and exhibitions. The Cultural Trust celebrated the “Silver Jubilee” 25th Anniversary of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh. Acclaimed artists from the Pittsburgh and national stages lit up the Cultural District— ringing in the New Year with live music, dance, theater, comedy, magic, and kids’ activities. The night culminated with two Zambelli Fireworks displays (including the Dollar Bank Children’s Fireworks), the signature New Year’s Eve Parade and its famed giant puppets, the “Countdown to Midnight,” and the raising of the Future of Pittsburgh Ball.

The Trust partnered with The Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University to host the third Pittsburgh Humanities Festival, which continued to grow in both breadth of programming and attendance. NPR’s Guy Raz led the Festival’s Featured Events, and Core Conversations engaged a range of both local and national figures, including Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman and his wife, Gisele; documentary filmmaker, Rick Sebak; X-Men illustrator Ed Piskor; and Lou Reed biographer, Anthony DeCurtis. Together, Festival presenters continued to engage the community in “smart talk about stuff that matters.”
New Orleans-based funk band, Water Seed, brought their unique sound to the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. Water Seed participated as part of the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh program. FESTIVALS • 15

The arts are essential for students and educators alike. Exposure to the arts helps students explore their passions and find their purpose— elevating not only their competency, but also their character. In 2018, the Trust continued to offer dynamic arts programming—in traditional and non-traditional settings—that complemented classroom learning.
THE POWER OF ONE TO SHAPE YOUNG MINDS ARTS EDUCATION
2018 EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS The Trust’s Arts Education department was honored once again to receive funding from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts for Teaching Artists Partnership (TAP) and Long-Term Residency (LTR) in-school programs. Teaching artist Celeta Hickman’s TAP residency at Pittsburgh Minadeo Elementary School focused on Afro-Caribbean Masquerade traditions and patterns. During the TAP, students created beaded sashes, learned dance notation, and developed choreography for an original dance. The students also received a very special treat when, during their US tour, Trinidad’s Soca Plus stopped by their school to perform a private concert just for them. As the final sharing for the TAP, students publicly debuted their dance at Point State Park during the kickoff for the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. At Canon-Macmillan’s Wylandville Elementary School, teaching artist Lindsay Woge’s LTR program focused on the intersection between art and science, with emphasis on sustainability and our impact on our world. Students designed and built bug hotels to help increase pollinators and “good insects” in their school’s garden, while also providing an aesthetically pleasing work of art for their outdoor space. They also participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count and designed and built bird-feeders from repurposed materials that would best serve the specific birds they saw in their community.

With Cityscape in 2018, Jumping Jack Theater has now presented two original works, created specifically for children on the autism spectrum—emphasizing the notion that we must support all of our students in order to become a more powerful, compassionate, and inclusive community of one.
The Trust Arts Education department launched Wolf Trap Baby Artsplay! This new initiative focuses on integrating the performing arts into the classroom to support our youngest learners, infants and toddlers. This program offers children a strong foundation from the start, setting them up for a successful future. Award-winning Pittsburgh performer Gab Bonesso was thrilled to team up with Trust Arts Education as she debuted her new performance project, Gab Squad, a new interactive musical-comedy performance for middle and high-school students. Gab Squad explored vital issues of mental health and triumph over both personal and societal obstacles with her unique mix of energetic songs, heartfelt discussion, and interactive comedic lessons—all with a message of tolerance and the celebration of creativity. As part of the Jazz Performance Series, supported by PNC Grow Up Great, the Trust commissioned a new performance with original recordings that offered children the opportunity to experience live, quality jazz led by professional local musicians. In 2018, the Trust’s Arts Education department served 19,763 participants across 4,065 program sessions. Teaching artists spent 5,081 hours providing programs for educators, students, and patrons. Additionally, the department provided 1,154 hours of professional development opportunities for educators.

Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement established its own Community Leaders Advisory Committee—to provide a space for open dialogue between the Trust and emerging leaders within the community. The Committee will advise the department on ways to strengthen community engagement efforts, and help to facilitate new partnerships with local entities. In April, in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Trust partnered with drummer Jevon Rushton, as he took on the role of artistic director to present the world premiere of An Evening with the Musical Compositions of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The event took place during the 50th anniversary year of the television series, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Held at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, the event—which was the highest-grossing jazz event ever hosted by the Trust—featured new jazz arrangements of the show’s timeless music, arranged by Rushton, Sean Jones, Paul Thompson, and Kenny Peagler. The Trust was proud to welcome special musical guests Joe Negri, renowned jazz guitarist, performer, composer, and educator, along with trumpeter and composer, Sean Jones. The evening was dedicated not only to the celebration of Mister Rogers, but also to the presentation of the inaugural JazzLive Legacy Award, which was proudly bestowed upon legendary drummer (and JazzLive fan favorite), Roger Humphries. Humphries was recognized for his significant contribution to Pittsburgh’s jazz scene, and for the lasting legacy that he has created in the industry. The Trust proudly celebrated the 15th anniversary of Showcase Noir, a juried art and design fair featuring work by artists and designers representing the African diaspora. Held at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, the fair showcased paintings, photographs, fiber art, accessories, apparel, stationery, home décor, print material, and art in various mediums—from emerging to established artists, both local and national. The Trust continued to host quarterly Gallery Crawls in the Cultural District, engaging new audiences in the arts and sparking a sense of community through artistic cultural exchange. The fall Gallery Crawl—sponsored by UPMC and UPMC Health Plan—was particularly significant, as it served as the kick-off of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts. Known as The Crawl that Starts It All, this event featured world premiere art installations, Art in the Alley—curated by Redfishbowl, and the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts’ World Market, featuring one-of-a-kind original art for purchase from more than twenty of the region’s finest artisans, from its diverse immigrant communities and from the Trust’s Showcase Noir group. In November, the Trust presented the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra featuring Sean Jones as part of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts for the world premiere of the concert event, Liberation. Liberation was inspired by the life and works of novelist, playwright and activist, James Baldwin, and the group was commissioned to compose an original work to premiere at the event. The commissioned work, Only the Poets, was composed by saxophonist and Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra member, Chris Coles. Liberation was performed before a sold-out crowd at the Greer Cabaret Theater. 2018 REAL ESTATE HIGHLIGHTS The Trust played a lead role in the ongoing development and revitalization of the Cultural District by continuing its investment in Liberty Avenue and the 8th Street block. Meaningful progress was made on a number of fronts, ensuring that 2019 will be an exciting year in the history of the Cultural District. 811 LIBERTY AVENUE
The Trust held a special Grand Reveal event to announce a brand new programming series, Liberty Magic, set to open in February 2019 in the newly renovated space at 811 Liberty Avenue. Dedicated to elevating the art of magic, Liberty Magic will engage world-renowned magicians for intimate, speakeasy-style performances in a 66-seat theater—allowing audiences to experience the magic up close. The Trust partnered with the new owners/developers in transforming the former Trust building at 820 Liberty Avenue, formerly the Palace Credit Building, into a first-class renovation featuring residential units on its upper floors and commercial space on the street level. The Trust will be responsible for the programming of the first floor to support the continued activation of the 800 block of Liberty Avenue. 937 LIBERTY AVENUE
In 2018, the Trust advanced plans for the renovation of 937 Liberty Avenue, which is home to Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater, Bricolage Production Company, and the Trust’s 937 Gallery. In an effort to diversify the Cultural District’s entertainment offerings, the Trust advanced plans to convert the former Bally’s Sports Club into a multiplex cinema, complete with an on-site bar and restaurant. The first-run movie theater will feature independent and art house films, along with popular, blockbuster fare. During the demolition phase, which will conclude in the summer of 2019, the Trust partnered with another non-profit organization, Construction Junction, to ensure that building materials were sustainably re-used. The building originally opened as the Alvin Theatre in 1891. As the building changed ownership, it underwent several name changes: the J.P Harris Theatre in 1942, and the Gateway Theatre in 1960. In 1980, the building was remodeled as a health club, and in 1999, it was purchased by Bally’s. In 2010, the building was purchased by the Trust as part of ongoing Downtown revitalization initiatives. REAL ESTATE • 29

THE POWER OF ONE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE DEVELOPMENT
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust continued to receive generous support from donors, sponsors, and members, whose investment has led to increased engagement and impact. In 2018, the Trust raised $22 million to support operations, special programming, capital projects, and endowment—which was a record total for a non-capital campaign year. These contributions include $10.5 million in operating support, reflecting a $1 million increase over 2017 and exceeding its 2018 goal. The Circles program (gifts of $1,000 or more) generated the most donors ever (835), and a record number of new members. The Trust is proud to have over 11,000 donors. Critical support for special projects was provided by a number of long-time Trust partners and supporters. The Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts received funding from the Benedum Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, the Carol R. Brown Fund, Opportunity Fund, Richard King Mellon Foundation, the Buhl Foundation, Caryn Rubinoff and Craig Dunham, and two anonymous donors. General Electric Company made a generous gift at the request of its former board member, Jim Rohr, to create an endowed fund for the Trust’s Arts Education Center. The Benter Foundation and Richard E. Rauh continued to lead sponsorship support of the Trust’s Cabaret Series. One of the Trust’s signature events last year was a special ceremony unveiling the newly renamed Greer Cabaret Theater, previously known as the Cabaret at Theater Square. Named after George Greer, Chairman of the Eden Hall Foundation and a trustee of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the Greer Cabaret Theater honors his impact on the Pittsburgh region through education, social welfare, health and the arts. The Trust’s Development team effectively partnered with sponsors to activate alleys and outdoor spaces in the Cultural District during quarterly Gallery Crawls. Allegheny Health Network participated in three Crawls, promoting its “All of Her Life” women’s health campaign, including the signature green sofa.

2018 FALL GALA For the first time ever, the Trust’s Fall Gala included the world premiere of a Broadway show, Cirque Éloize HOTEL. With strong attendance, the Gala surpassed fundraising goals for the year.

This special pop-up event in the former Six Penn location transformed a vacant space into a one-night-only dance party. “Footwork” was aimed at engaging young professionals in Cultural Trust membership.
This uniquely extravagant affair, held at The Pennsylvanian, celebrated the closing of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, while transporting guests to a charming European promenade. A collaboration between the Partners & Circles boards, Promenade in the Pavilion was presented by UPMC Health Plan, co-chaired by Christy & B.J. Blose and Kate Koop Irwin & Khip Irwin, and supported by LUXE Creative.
