Year 7 Owl Anthology

Page 1

Owl Anthology

Our Year 7 pupils enjoyed a truly memorable day when a parliament of owls visited the school chapel as part of a special collaboration between the Art and English departments.

Joined by experts from the Screech Owl Sanctuary and acclaimed poet and illustrator Catherine Hyde, pupils observed and sketched an Indian Scops Owl, a Barn Owl and a Tawny Owl while learning fascinating facts about their habitats, features and conservation.

Inspired by the experience, pupils created their own illustrated owl poems, combining thoughtful writing with imaginative artwork. This anthology celebrates the creativity, curiosity and talent shown throughout this unforgettable day.

“It was such a pleasure to come and speak to the Year 7s about Darkling. Having the opportunity to draw the owls was a real privilege - I felt so lucky to spend time sitting near these beautiful birds! It was a wonderful day, and such a joy to work with such talented young artists and writers. Thank you to the pupils, Truro School, and the Screech Owl Sanctuary for making it so special.”

The Silent Watcher

I drop, My feet crunch Against the leafy surface.

I look around, nothingness... except dank, musty woodland. I hear a slight rustle in the leaves.

I follow the sound. It’s a mouse, a dark shadow. Patiently wait until I... Jump

Fly into the air with my prey I accomplished.

A Hunter’s Experience

As I seek for prey in the torrid atmosphere, My keen eyes scan and my alert ears I hear Startled sparrows that squawk in fear Or echoing sounds of galloping deer.

I plunge down with my razor-sharp claws, Prey is most enjoyed when it is raw. In starvation, I have only caught four, Therefore, I will hunt for more.

From four to eight to sixteen, There are less meals to be seen.

Flavour isn’t unless you aim for the spleen, Or else they will taste like tiny beans.

Kee-wit twit twoo

I create a massacre for food

Kee-wit twit twoo I will hunt for more prey soon.

The End

I’m on the hunt, For a bug or some leftover food. I finally spot something. I catch it, I feel its legs crawling in my mouth.

I look up, See a blur that looks like a cloud, But its moving.

I get scared. I run away before it sees me. I hide behind a tree.

I hear it crunching the leaves, I try peaking around the tree, But it sees me.

I try to run but it’s too fast, I end up in a corner squealing for help.

But it’s too late.

I see its claws in front of me It’s massive, It has pitch black eyes just like the night. It strikes.

I don’t wake up.

Free

From in my cage on the basement floor, I heard many wild owls call, I used to wonder often, Why I was there at all.

But now high in the sky I’m soaring, Among the blossoming trees, Enjoying all of the sights, And of cause the summer breeze.

I’ve found a tree to perch on, Waiting until night fall, Listening for minuscule heart beats heartbeats that I’m likely to stall.

Once when I was a captive, I got food and drink brought to me, I didn’t know the meaning of life, But now I do because I’m free.

The Owl

I see a fluffy owl, “Twit, too”, it goes, As loud as a drum, As fluffy as a blanket.

You could hear his “twit, too” a mile away. A death stare he did.

With his humongous, dark sharp eyes, There he went, off to the wind. He never came back. What now?

The Owl Strikes

The owl swoops through the trees there is a breeze He swoops and dives and thrives

He spots his prey and goes to strike His prey runs and turns and rolls and digs a hole

The prey is fast and through the grass

The owl retreats to his base where he is ready to feast.

The Whisper

It glides, It flows, It wonders,

It’s a feathery, small beast glowing as the moon shines on its wings.

It storms, It’s gone, It dives,

It disappears into the long grassy meadow with flowers hovering above the glimmering green.

Its claws grab, Its jaws clamp, Its feathers puff,

This amazing, winged creature has caught its scrambling screaming prey.

Finally Free

I flapped my mini wings and flew Above the cages of my ‘crew’

I flapped and flapped until I tired And flew down to where I acquired My nest so clean and oh so fluffy Yes, I know it was probably stuffy The area I left was my small space And it was just enough to keep me safe Until I awoke in the soggy morn And flew back to my log so warm There I would find my friends so small And I would twit to them, all and all Twit twit. I called so soft and kind And there they would then all look and find

Me...

The Owl’s Feast

I saw it. A patient, mysterious figure. It was an owl!

The owl calls into the night sky It drifts through the trees as a ghost.

They hoot, The owl is the voice of the night. It stares. Its eyes look gigantic.

Then,

The owl swoops down

I see its talons, long and sharp It finds its preyA baby mouse.

The mouse goes down in one gulp

The owl flies back up Its wings short and silent like someone breathing Off it goes into the distance until its hungry again.

I sat, I waited and watched as night fell,

A clock struck twelve, And then I realized... The hunt had begun, I dropped, Then swopped My feathers shone like the moon, Smooth, shiny and spectacular

My eyes adjusted to the dark And there I saw it, A mouse, I dropped...

My claws dug deep deeper than the depths of the night.

I glided back to my tree, Then I sat, I waited And watched as night fell.

The Owl’s Night Patrol

She gracefully swooped through the inky darkness Plummet, pounce and plunder in a moonlit moment.

She clawed, grasped below at the vulnerable vole who’s Haunting call troubled the night.

Ascending upward she soared, the weak vole dangling from Her vicious beak.

Her velvety wings folded away safe from the winter rain, the Patrol over and prey secured

I am the shadow on the branch, Waiting.

The night wakes slowly. Rain falls

And darkens the ground below. Heavy wings unfold.

I drop from the old oak tree

And drift into the quiet dark. The forest stills.

It holds its breath for me. And then I know The night belongs to Me.

Owl of Ice and Cloud

Feathers lined with foam, Mouse scuttles into hole. Beauty made of snow. Stars upon stars above, Owl watches, unfazed. Wings of silence, Owl lifts, Hunger made cruel, Quiet made deadly. Phantom of inky eyes, Souring above whispering trees. Wise oracle of nature, Hunter of gloaming. Eternally watching, Eternally flying, Eternally hunting.

The voice, the hoot, the chant, All sound echoes through the crawling dark, Skeletal branches reach out, Spy, plummet, kill Owl hunts.

Silent ghost of the night sky, Calling to the moon, Chatter, swoop, explode, Owl caught the mouse it saw.

Beams of moonlight shadow down, descending down to land, Mouse scurries beneath its cave, Owl hand in hand.

Thunder, lightning, Crash! Torrential rain smashes down like shards of glass, The sky once blue, is now a sheet of grey, The storm in full fury, is here to stay.

Owl swoops away, hiding from the rain, While thunder rolls and lashes, twisting like it’s in pain, It dreams of the moon, a place of wonder, Closing one eye, Owl is done for the day.

The Owl

The owl is a majestic creature, Swooping and twisting through the trees, Just watching from above, Blending in when no one is looking, It hunts while the world sleeps. It moves through the night like a quiet shadow, Eyes bright and alert. Its wings carry it without a sound, Always watching, always waiting, The owl, hidden, silent, and free, A quiet presence in the dark among the trees.

Phantom of the Canopy

A ghost glimmering waiting in the branches, a shadow among shadows.

Its eyes are side pools of stygian-black, catching every flicker of movement.

A mouse advances in the grass. The owl drops, swift, certain, a guardian of the night.

When dawn appears, the hunter is gone, and only trees remember and watch the visit of the owl.

Cryptic owl,

Flying above the shimmering sea

Sweeping their wings

Across the evening breeze

Shooting stars, shimmering moon

Majestic night

Follows you Owls eyes

Deep and ready

Wind takes owl

Away from the moon

I feel owls silence

Hovering above me

Clouds make a path

For the deadly owl

Night time owl

The Shadow

In the hush of midnight, A silent wail rose from the throat of the wind, Two glowing orbs blinking awake Behind a plumage of feathers. They beat as soft as a flutter, Carrying its self slipping into darkness.

Midnight

It was midnight. The only light was the moon. I descend slowly, and carefully, I listen.

A faint rustle from the bushes, Silence. There it was again,

My eyes fix on movement below, I dive into my prey.

Talons open with force, fiercely I claw my prey. Power surging through my veins, eyes as black as midnight, claws as sharp as knives.

Whisper of Nothing

Trees

Are witnesses

Holding breath holding On I sit I perch

becoming night owning night life around me

Fades

I hear calls twi twooooooo I know Now

Whisper of nothing Gliding I taste I hear I feel

Everything

Menacing Attack

I swoop down sharp movement dodge branches ready for a menacing attack

I spot my victim getting ready to dive I leap and swoop down

The trees surround me like a prison feels like something is watching me from above I look up and see a blurry figure launching me at the sky

Not knowing what to do I shield myself with my wing I get ready for the blow

I feel nothing but agony in my wing feels like my wing has shattered into a million pieces I drop down to the ground thinking it’s the end

Searching for motion

He glides silently searching For any movement.

His head moves side to side Sweeping the land For any motion.

He slows, his eyes locked on to one spot One swift motion and he flies away Victorious and reedy to return .

I dive into the woods

I dive into the woods

When I spot my prey, I’m blind and cold Not a sound I make.

I plunge into the darkness My eyes lock onto my victim, I then reach out my claws I watch, I dive, I jump!

I dive into the woods

Most dark nights, With eyes as dark as midnight And claws as sharp as axes.

I watch, I wait, I dive, I jump!

I dive into the woods

When my prey is down below, I lock eyes, then I go

I pounce off the tree ledge

To go catch again, once I’ve got my dinner, I wait to strike again….

Owl Poem

I turn

To the old apple tree

Where she watches her prey

Her piercing eyes stare down searching for movement On the muddy forest floor below. Suddenly she darts elegantly, Her enormous wings flap majestically, Through the starry night.

I sit and I watch, Her hypnotic patterns swoop silently, Towards a defenseless mouse.

She has won her prize, Her belly full and relaxed, She survives another day.

The Thought Of A Hunt

Sitting up high in my favorite old oak

I prepare to go out for my thrilling midnight hunt

My golden eyes gleam and glint as they catch the beautiful silver light

I sit and wait, watching to catch my prey

Maybe I’ll find a mouse or two

I gracefully soar across the peaceful moonlit sky

Silent wings outstretched Dodging stars along the way

Primrose DM

Barn Owl

A barn owl lifts on silver wings, Across the lake where twilight sings. The water holds the fading light, A mirror smooth as breath at night.

Her feathers pale as winter’s hush, She skims the air without a rush. No ripple breaks the glassy skin As moon and mountain pull her in.

Below, the water dreams in blue, Of sky and stars the owl flies through. Above, her shadow softly slides, A ghost between the mirrored sides.

She hunts not prey but silence here, Where earth and heaven blur and clear. Then gone—into the darkened trees, Leaving the lake its quiet peace.

Miles D

The Brave Owl

I waited, still and silent on the bark, A shadow grasping its hold onto the tree. Below me, the dark moved. I was waiting for prey. My wings burst through the air, I struck.

Then “CRASH”, The world fell from under me, I hit the ground, Helpless as a small ant My limbs locked tight, And my body was screaming under the weight.

My sight was horrible, Sound became thick and distant, Through the blur, I heard footsteps, Breaking leaves with each step, They found me laying In the grass and shadow, Lifted me carefully and sent me Back where I belong

Midnight Strikes

Midnight strikes

Sky floods above me

Twitter, flick, thrust

I glide and swoop through starlit night skies

Ocean of stars above

Filled with deadly silence

Forest calls me in

I hear my fellow friends

Singing their songs

Enveloping me into their senses

I perch by a nearby branch

Scanning my surroundings

I hoot the songs of praise

I navigate and contemplate my next move

A weary sigh reaches out to me

The dissonant symphony

Owls of the Magical Night…

Wide winds spread in the silver air, Feathers so soft with downy flair, Feathers thick it extracts the cold, Colours glistening brown and gold.

Round brights eyes that never sleep, Waiting and watching for its pray very deep, Silent heads that turn with ease, Hearing the sound of the midnight breeze. Then they fly no sound, no cry, Gliding calm in the peaceful sky, Owls rule the night with quiet might, Feathered kings and queens of dark and light.

Migration

Owls don’t migrate you know that, But this owl does, its fact, He migrates once every year, To collect food and spread good cheer, He leaves his branch up in the tree, To spread good cheer to the children he sees, He swoops he flies and makes a lot of noise, While keeping absolutely perfect poise, This year the owl will go to a different town, As the old one he went had been burnt down, This owl you see lives in an ok place, But occasionally it can be quite a disgrace, So, this owl must be careful where he flies, Or else he might be shot down from the sky, He flies quite high today, Yet he still isn’t far away A bullet is shot,

The migrating owl is now lost, There is no cheer that year, So, let’s hope there is another owl to spread cheer, Again here.

The Lonely Owl

The wind flashes across my body

In the great big pine tree at dusk, I love the wind, How the cold breeze ruffles my cloud like feathers.

As the sun goes down, I rise, ‘Crunch’ I hear it, the mouse becomes my prey. It tries to run but I catch it I devour the mouse in peace.

As I sit here in the great big pine tree, I hoot into the misty skies, I chomp and I chew, Until an owl replies.

I hoot again, into the mysterious sky, But this time the owl does not reply, I feel as lonely as a bird without its flock, Up in the great big pine tree.

Owl Poem

Distracting rays were wiggling round my door so I stood there, baffled, then shuffled over the landing floor to spot the source, feeling quite daft already.

But once outside I froze mid-stride, very heroic, very confused.

A Quiet Guardian

An owl sits still on a moonlit branch, Eyes wide, glowing in a dark hush. Night is still as shadows sway, While the quiet owl watches till day Below, the woods in murmurs sleep, Where roots remember people deep The forest listens as shadows breathe, Leaves whisper softly underneath. Still as a thought the owl remains, Watching stars glide through the night sky A quiet guardian of dusk till dawn, Wise and patient till night is gone.

Still and Silent

At morning.

She stands still and silent like a statue, For her this time is her curfew, So still and silent she waits.

At midday.

Along with the moon and all the stars Her time and her prime is still afar. With birds singing and sun raised bright, She stands still and silent as she waits.

At evening.

So tempting is her flight, But so she waits to cause no fright. She stands still and silent like a statue and waits.

At night.

At last the wait has ended, So may she fly with her snowy white wings extended, Over the voles and holes and animals galore,

As she calls for a mate she would adore, with eyes darker than coal and claws stronger than clamps. May she rule all over the forest and night, as she dives with speed and agility, With no doubtfullness or fragility, She makes a kill!

A nimble quick movement. And so her prey is caught And stays still… And silent.

The Golden Tree

The burdened owl swoops onto the golden tree, Its wings are as quiet as a butterfly, The steady owl waits gently on the golden tree, Watching peacefully as the soft breeze blows,

The quiet owl notices an animal in the distance, Its eyes are sharp, pin-pointing the animal, The patterned owl watches, waiting for the animal to reappear in the distance,

The animal’s scattered footsteps are reheard,

The beautiful owl plunges toward the uneven wood’s ground, It’s body is as fast as a bullet,

The small owl opens it’s wings before nearly crashing toward the uneven wood’s ground, It pauses, watching silently,

The threatening owl dives through the pitch-black night sky, It’s searching eyes re-find the mouse,

The majestic owl pronounces through the pitch-black night sky, It kills, Then it returns to its Golden Tree.

A keen eyed shadow, Silently stalks the air.

Vast, starry pupils

Stare into my soul from above, Always vigilant, ready to drop.

The Owl

The Silent Watcher

The owl wakes in the dead of night, Its eyes are like the dark sky, It watches from a tree branch, calm and still, An eerie shape waiting in the dark.

A soft hoot drifts through the trees

Echoing from a dark forest far below. The sound moves gently through the air, As the owl listens to the world around it.

Slowly, it spreads its wings, And glides through the night. It moves silently between the shadows, A quiet guardian of the night.

The Beautiful Owl

The beautiful owl landed gracefully on the branch.

The owl’s eyes were a golden hue. His heart shape face stared fiercely at his prey. He moves gracefully with effortless ease.

The powerful owl swoops down to catch his prey. Coming out of the shadows, he uses his camouflage to his advantage. He catches the mouse in his razor-sharp talons. The silent owl glides through the trees.

The Barn Owl

He flies, His wings as soft as a gentle breeze

The night is creeping like ink, With only embers of daylight left He sweeps the field, Determined to find his prey He flies over field and forest Hill and valley He sees fox and beaver

But suddenly he hears a mouse Creeping in the dancing grasses below He drops Surges towards his prey He strokes the ground Before flying back as morning breaks

I swoop down

Drop dead

Darkness swallows the forest

The stars begin to grow

I hear it call

Twit twoo

Twit twoo

Again

Twit twoo

Twit twoo

Then silence

While the world rests

I hunt from dusk to dawn

Till dawn breaks

Turning the trees golden

And the sky bright I rest… I rest… I rest…

Leo H

What Am I If?

What am I if I have claws of golden daggers, So small but so deadly, Eyes as dark as night, Feathers of a royal gown, And a beak of bole flint.

What am I if I look around the wooded landscape, Sensing the wind on my wings, If I see the trees of Mother Nature, swaying in the breeze, And if I hear the mice, scuttering on the forest floor.

What am I if I chase my prey, Over the fields and across the forest floor, never letting it leave my sharp sight.

For I am an owl, A beast of majestic beauty and grace, But even a bird of such high stature, Shall fall on the next day of rain.

From Sunset To Sunrise

My wings cut the navy painted sky, my beady eyes scanning the ground, I catch the site of a scattering mouse and swoop down just in time.

On still nights like this one the stars are especially bright, I sit and look at the night’s beauty, And the moon, the nights light.

Dawn is burning through the bottom of the sky slowly, I still have time left, I call for the others to join me because they must be out there, surly.

As dawn turns to early morning I fly away; The night is over I cannot stay.

Life

He wakes, eyes wide; He’s ready, to dive; He cleans his feathers, And shakes his feet; Starting to be alive.

He looks through fields; only for prey; he finds one and locks in,

Dead

Time to feast, need to eat; He hasn’t eaten in five days, Hunger

After the meal he heads, Into a world of dreams; A land of sleep; To fall away.

Silent phantom of the night

Hunting prey

In darkest light

Animals shake in deepest fear

Flap of wings

They cannot hear

Unlike the Owl

Whose hearing is Acute

Slightest sound Screams like a Flute

Pouncing on its

Prey So fast

Small owl babies

Get fed at last

The Owl in the Tree Next to the Sea

The owl sat in the tree looking out to sea

He wondered, did the owl

What would he have for tea

The owl soared from his perch

In the birch to the ground

Where he saw the round

A ball of grey in the grass

A mighty hall wished the owl

Disappointed the owl was

When all he saw was A minuscule mouse

A cool salty wind blew from the sea

The owl now knew

What he’ll have for tea

I Watch

I wait and I watch.

I watch the Earth turn. I watch the trees grow. I watch the owls. The owls, Silent and invisible. Like me,

I am the man on the moon.

I am the wind in the trees. I am all powerful, But I am alone, Just like the owl, The darkness. I watch.

Mouse

The night consumes me, It courses through my bones, I hop, I fall, I soar,

Wind ruffles my plumage, And rain trickles down my beak, The night sky as dark as velvet, Enveloping me in a never-ending embrace, A timid mouse scurries below, I plummet, Wind whips around my face, Snap!

The mouse limpens, Dead, Locked tightly in my unforgiving jaws, And yet the sun rises, Trapping me in my tree, So I sit, Waiting, For the dark to consume me.

Night Owl

I lurked on a perch in the forgotten woods

Watching over the foxes hunt at dusk Waiting for the right time to pounce, to swoop at the ones below just minding their business.

I sat, I waited, I watched, As night fell.

I sat waiting for prey to come Watching over the woods. My eyes light up the night like a torch. I rapidly dive - the pesky prey gets away.

I sat, I waited, I watched, As night moved on. Hoot, screech, hoot. Wings wave wildly As a second target crawls slowly into view. Hoot, screech, success.

Perched in a swamp of leaves, I blend

With oak.

Clogged branches surround me, engulf me, become me.

Twilight fog

Bleeds into view, Blankets world in violet blue.

Stars speckled On a black canvass. Darkness, Deep abyssal darkness, Hushes sunlight before my eyes.

The Owl

The trees whispered in the wind a lone mouse trudged along with its tiny ears pricked then came a deafening...

SCREECH!

it echoed through the wood like a choir in a church, the mouse dived into the snow then as the owl plunged on its prey it all went silent, not even a twig snapped the mouse was gone and, in its place, was a crimson patch of snow and two talon prints indents in the soft cold ground the trees wept and withered and all grew a knew knot a memorial of a faithful friend

A flock, a murder, a parliament of feathers wisping through the rising mist, like the evening star. But I am only an oak of wood, crowned with ivy-berry and branch. Beavers gnaw and weave, immersing themselves in work. While otters. Dart, dash and dive, with a bubbly aquatic charm! Meanwhile she sits still.

A night watcher. A stargazer. Yet an unnoticed sovereign of the world. I have only bark, no bite Spreading rumours through my roots.

A guardian of the silent wind, although no meaning lies within. Her powerful talons of an eagle.

A regal mane of a lion. Iridescent colours like a chameleon. Although striking as someone who treasures secrecy puzzles, and wonder.

However, I am only a tree among many, carrying nature with me. I collect the dew and provide safety and structure. Some would even call me home.

I am my own, although there are many of my kind.

Soaring

Dropping

Diving and dancing with the smiling moon. Then stretching her wings once again and scooping in bundles of air with her forearm, Drawing in stories and tales from the day. Enchanted. Angelic. Mystical. A sentry guarding my woodland.

A stealthy predator and silent prey, Found, admits the gorse and curdled ivy. But I am only an ancient seed. Anchored for my community.

I long for the moonlit night, when again she takes up her post. Drifts over to my gnarled boughs, giving me a long-awaited purpose. As the sun rises high, the next day this weary lookout will not take flight. But will wait, to be the star of tomorrow’s night.

I sit, Frozen like a statue

With a flick of a wing, I levitate

Then plummet

Swooping over the head of a scurrying rat.

Invisible to the buzzards above me

And a silent cloud to the unfortunate living entity below

I swoop but a call brings me back, From her perch she calls to me

Keewit

Keewit

We dance in the air

Enveloped in a tranquil aura

Swooping and plunging

I plumet

Hurtling at the ground

I rocket up with the prize in my claws

Dropping it for the greedy fledglings

Darkness calls

His eyes, black. His face, deep. He is patient, He is still.

He waits

Something moves, He’s sharp, He swoops, He kills.

As precise as an arrow, No room for mistakes. He waits.

He perches as still as a ghost, As pale as paper. He calls; Twoo twoo, No reply.

Fox runs. He watches. He is still. He is still. He, is, still. Darkness. He waits.

Henry L G T

I am

I am a hunter, I am the night till crack of dawn, then I am the day.

Even when still, I strike terror in the hearts of rodents and they know they are prey,

I am a predator, no, I am THE predator. Do you hear that twit? That twoo? And if you’re prey, listen It might be the last sound you hear.

Twit Twoo, Twit Twoo.

I am the ghost, the one of darkness. Twit Twoo, Twit Twoo.

Even the bravest bird becomes a coward when dealing with me. I am the owl.

And you, mouse, should run.

I see other birds swoop around, As the snow settles on the ground. The fox’s footprint lingers in the snow; Oh, look there is a person in a window.

Scanning the floor for mice and shrews, I hear another owl say twit-twoo. Now the forest has been swallowed in darkness, And then I see a shrew that isn’t the sharpest.

I dive and chase the little creature, Just as I had been taught by my teacher. I catch the creature in my claws, Fly away in search of a pause.

I found a treetop to sit and eat, I swallow it down upon my seat. As the sun rises, I dwell and ponder, Then I go for another wonder.

I see other birds swoop around, As the snow settles on the ground.

L

I Stalk

I stalk I listen, I watch, I glide, I stalk.

I see something. A mouse, I’m ready to pounce. I stretch my Talons out, Ready to swipe, I stalk. So friendly looking, So gentle, So majestic, So elegant, But deadly. I Stalk.

L

My Owl Poem

The owl flows through the distant breeze. The wind picks up and so does its speed.

Faster and faster through the swaying oak trees Soaring across the sky.

The owl, out of the corner of its eye

Sees a mouse, its prey for the skies He snatches him up and ascend to fly

Soaring across the sky

The owl, as the sky turns dark swoops down, to rest, in a graceful arc

So there he lays not, Soaring across the sky

L

Hugo

From the Sky

The wind is shouting as I soar through the sky, gliding through feathers, rushing past my eye.

I conquer the air in a silent glide, while far below, a shrew runs to hide.

I swoop, no sound, not a whisper, not one. I spy. I wait. The hunt’s begun. I hover above the trembling ground: will he ever see me? No,no sound.

Then I dive, faster than ever before, as the rat scurries across the floor.

Squeak! the shrew shrieks, too late to flee. I strike, I grasp, destiny.

At last, my hunger is finally fed dinner at last, and I eat instead.

Out of the Dusk

I drift

As my feathers ruffle

With the wind and My wings flap like an eagle

As I swoop over the sea

Watching the stars glow

As they drift

As the night sky

Ripples along the sea

As dolphins fly and Fish dive

Harrison L

The Hunt

My mystical colours look like a tree, I’m camouflage, I’m hidden, I’m gone.

Nothing wants to be caught in my intimidating glare, I search, I seek, I hunt.

My elegant fluffy feathers catch upon the breeze, I swoop, I dive, I catch.

My claws are blades that dig deep into a mouse, I’ve caught, I kill, I feast.

Hunting

I fly silently over the dark grass, The shadow I cast is a majestic shape, My food scarpers away to the shelter,

I see it, it’s mine I make a beeline I drop and kill Tonight, I will Eat my food With my brood

The Devour

I glide, quick as a hair, Cutting through the air, Cold as snow yet quiet like A still lake

I look for prey, hungry, thirsty

For blood creeping through the dark I Watch, at everything not just the ground

But at every tree every scramble of noise

And at the sudden movement of leaves

As the wing creeps through the dark, Narrow forest

I see a small mouse, drinking water

My eyes widen, my spirits rise I swoop, I capture the mouse I devour

I am the sound in the quiet the light in the dark

I am the beautiful in the dull

I am the star in the night

The Midnight Barn Owl

I sit as I stare

Come out if you dare, I come swooping, swooping, swooping, I see your, your found. I come back to the nest to with food the best, But for the fledglings the rest my baby’s come out screeching twit twoo twit twee. I know I might be small but to others so tall, On my branch I preach but to my fledgling I teach to dive to fly and catch and eat

As I sit perched where special shadows sleep It listens to light beam out My baby’s hop and sing a screech of horror, They reach out and nearly fall I go down catch one, two, then three, then, four

Then we lay down four the morning.

Hunting For Prey

I sit there waiting for night to fall, Then I strike, my wings flapping gracefully, Starring deep into the night, My big beady eyes watching.

Hedgehogs and foxes are rustling beneath me, My illuminous eyes guiding me like a torch, I can see my prey.

My cryptic patterns like tree bark, They never see me coming, Swooping, I catch something.

I fly back through the ominous night, Ro my tree, Then I wait.

Wait for the next killing, But in never comes, Instead, day comes I rest.

Isobella M

Darkness

I look and sit in the silent air

Watching a little mouse go and hide under the leaves I swoop down into the leaves into darkness

Where my beak meets the mouse Hunger tightens in my chest and the cold

Air brushes against my feathers

The rustle of the leaves makes me excited

I flap my wings in excitement

The night feels big and quiet like its watching me

Rosie M

A look that holds one million words

I see a bird perched on an oak tree as old as time

His eyes are like galaxy’s swirling repeatedly

His eyes are like black holes battling the light

The twilight reflects off his eyes making two moons

A simple glance holds more wisdom than word could ever convey Eyebrows as black as night they pierce the sun rays as midnight turns to morning

He sees a mouse scuttering home he knows it has family, but it does not stop him

Before the mouse dies the owl gives it a look

A look that holds more words than in a book

More word than in a library

More word than in a galaxy

More words than there can ever

A look that holds I million words

Roen O

The Owl

Glistening, bright, round eyes

As orange as the burning sun

Alert, as it roams the skies

270 head turn done

Brown, white and grey feathery coat

Still, intelligent and smart

Speeding, swooping around the moat

Its pure skill is off the charts

Its claws like beak

Pulls small rodents apart

Heipless and weak

No revolution will start

Grasping the branch tight

With Its razor-sharp talon claws

Awake all through the night

Hanting and figing across the moors

Communicating in the dark

Hooting and screeching out

Some owls even bark

To one another, they like to shout

The Owl

Then I saw it

The large majestic creature

The glistening eyes interrogating the ground

Searching for me

My heart was beating in my head

Will it get me?

Will it not?

It perched on a pine

Tuming its head, facing backwards

Acting like a king

Being a king

It dropped to the floor

Creeping towards me

Searching the leaves and ferns

Gliding, creeping, surrounding

Suddenly it heard the warning of the clouds

It flew of just as the rain

Gently pitter-pattered the forest floor

Pitter patter

Pitter patter

Catherine O

I listen, I screech, I dive, suddenly the forest awakens. I glide, then plumet.

A mouse scuttles into a field.

A kill stolen by a fox. He leaps at me, I swerve away into the midnight air, Finally, a chance for food.

A mole scratches the surface, I descend silently from the evening air above.

Swooping down upon the mole.

Looking down I see his eyes, bulging up under the Skys, My open claws approaching fast, He squeaks and squeals And dives into the soil.

I reach down and clasp my talons around his big plump belly, He wiggles and squirms, I tighten my grip and pull, I glide away into the midnight air.

Grasping the mole in my talons shining like armour, The fast gushing wind tearing at my face.

I gracefully swoop into my nest, I see my owlets waiting to have their first meal of the night.

Ghostly Reflections

Silent mirror

I glide through air

Like a silent killer

Elegant swooping

Flap flap, flap flap

People stop

Stare and wonder

I glide through stary night

Demon hunter

Mouse squeaks

I dive into darkness

Up I come with mouse in harness

Fox red moonlight hunts across the land

I scan the forest

for a heartbeat on the ground

Clouds rush across the sky

Wind hushes

Mouse should hide

I glide through trees

Cryptic phantom

Listening for heartbeats

beating fast from fear

George P

It is He

My eyes are closed, But my ears are open Hearing the forest slowly settle. The pesky owl. It is dusk.

I feel anger start to claw its way up my throat. Peering through closed eyelids, Why must he get in the way?

I see the sky lit up with the remnants of day I must calm down.

In the coral pink glow, Soaring across thick woods, I stretch my wings I let my thoughts wonder. And fly.

And just as I start to forget about the other owl; Ka hoot

The delight of gliding, swooping, swirling, fills me

Ka hoot with joy

Why can’t he just leave me alone?

But I must focus. Alone I am happy. I am hungry

Alone I must stay. Drifting over open fields I watch silently.

Morning

Sun rising. I must swoop away. I fly through trees. On the ground I spy a vole. I am hungry.

I stop, ready. Vole notices, starts to run. It is too late. I make a killing. Hunger satisfied, I swoop to nest. I rest. It is well deserved.

P

Midnight

As I swoop through the trees

Black birds scatter

As I land in a tree

Watching for prey

Silently I sit watching

But no movement

Suddenly some movement

Then nothing

Then leaves crunch

I see something run I look closely

It was a mouse I swoop

The mouse dodges I swoop again I catch it

Then I swoop up

Back to a tree

I feast

On a fresh mouse.

I’m the lazy owl

I’m the lazy ow! I sleep all day I sleep all night

I’d rather be napping Then flapping flying is boring cause I’d rather be snoring so, whenever you see an owl don’t think they would rather be flying.

Dominant

I am a silent, lonely figure, Alone beneath the moonlit sky.

Some may see me as a king, Perched high where shadows lie.

I sleep while daylight fills the land, Hidden in a hollowed tree.

But when the sun begins to fade, The comes and calls out for me.

I glide on wings that make no sound, Through silver air, calm and slow.

Below the world does not look up, They never see me go.

I drop down fast from branch to ground, A sudden blur a flash of white.

All they see is strength and speed, A hunter ruling night.

P

The owl that dropped it

I’m in the darkling forest, I drop it, Sat alone, It runs, I watch my surroundings,

The chase is on, Feasting my eyes with what I see. I follow and fly.

I hear it, It ducks, I see it, I fall, A mouse, And ..... All alone in a field. I miss, I drop, It scurries away, Wings slowly extending, Towards the thick wood. Within seconds,

I’ve taken flight. I’ve fallen into a branch, I retreat, I pierce through the night, And fly back to my home.

Gradually edging closer to the mouse, My talons open, I’m disappointed, And I sweep it off its feet. Injured, And hungry.

I fly in a circle, Heading back to finish the job, This emotion is hard to describe, Feeling no mercy, I’m not happy nor sad, Though ... But disappointed, I don’t get there. And all because I dropped it.

Agnès P

I glide through the night, My reflection staring back at me. Moon hides behind foggy clouds, Leaving me to rule the night.

I hover over, Dropping down. Mouse lies, Frozen still, Hiding, Not daring to move. I swoop down, Like a silent assassin, Catching my prey. A weary squeak, Eeeek... Comes from its mouth. At last night is still.

Through The Storm

I am sat, perched in my pocket of warmth, Thunder grumbles deep in the distance, Shaking the sky and my empty stomach, No food, no claws sinking into flesh, A week has passed and I am still waiting.

Far away – kee woo, kee woo. Another owl calls, I answer once, Then turn and fly the other way. Like we are playing hide and seek, And neither of us want to be found.

The storm thickens all around me, Cold air drops like a heavy curtain, The wind howls and tugs at my wings. CRACK! Lightning splits the sky, And jagged trees flash into view.

The owl’s call comes once more, Twisted now by the raging wind, Icy fingers comb through my feathers, As I fly away from the sound, Swooping further into the darkness.

The storm swallows the world, Under the huge, shaking sky, I feel as small as my prey, Unsure of what comes next, Alone beneath the menacing clouds.

Darkness, Bleeds, Across evening’s glow Air, Holds me, Lifts me, Through luminous night Sounds of ghost, Haunt thick forest Smell of dusk, Morphs to midnight Fields become dark, Skies shine with light As I glide through a sea of stars Jealous moon hides, In clouds of grey

A Night’s Work

I am a hunter, a small shadow swooping from above, I am the tree spirit, the forest warden, in my domain.

I call, and the creatures hide, mouse, vole, starling, I drop, feel fur in my claws, a day’s food.

The Owl

He is watching you, Whether you’d like it Or not

His eyes are endless voids, Gentle glimmers dancing in its darkness. Staring at your movements

As you scurry and scramble. He tightens his grasp, As the wind whispers their mocks. Wings of drums Yet no beat escapes, And his call killing the night He retreats into the shadows

As morning embraces his velvet cloak. Still, He is watching.

The Midnight Watcher

In twilights hush, the owl takes flight, A whisper carved from a fold’s night. With amber eyes and silent grace, He guards the moons secluded place,

While dreamers drift through shadows deep, He keeps the secrets stars must keep.

S

Ayaan

She silently swooped between trees

Big, beady eyes watching for predators

Soaring steadily through the night skies

Gliding gracefully in between dull, dead trees

She is like a cotton ball

No noises, just silence

You wouldn’t even notice her unless you look up

One wing bigger than the other

Soft browns and greys

She hunted her cautious prey as quiet as a mouse.

Like a part of the night

Unstitching itself from a wall of darkness swooping across the sky

The owl is the beating heart of the night that catches its prey effortlessly as it hoots and twits celebrating its new find.

As the owl flies as quiet as a mouse, listening very carefully for the faint, stray beating heart, wondering when it will find its next meal.

The Dark Night

The sun dies But the moon rise

Dark Night Silence

I sit I wait I spy

I watch the mice scatter I watch the birds fly I sit I aim I fly I dive down and... BAM!

I kill I chew I eat I devour I choose my next prey And dive No time to waste.

The Winged Tree

Velvety wings set apart the Hushed peaks of the trees, As the wordless Lull of the ferns sway in the moonlight

Danger at Dusk

I wait on my tree, Until the sun creeps down, The sky is a blanket, Orange to purple to black.

I take off,

My brown speckled wings propelling me into flight, I am not afraid of the pool of darkness ahead, Gently gliding over the fields of golden, bearded wheat.

Silently I fly, scouring for my next victim, Always watching and always listening, Scutter, scutter, skitter, scatter, What was that?

Every feather on my back tingles, I spread my wings ready to dive, Legs lurch forward, Deadly talons armed, Speeding over the wheat, My eyes fix on the prize, One last, swift bolt, I am hungry no more.

The Silent Swoop

I majestically perch on a damp rotten branch

Watching eagerly for my prey

I need patience and a keen eye

As it takes a while, night turns to early day.

But the thought of a juicy morsel I cannot resist,

So I wait like a still statue to hear rustle Then swoop into flight to make a catch.

As the scuttling squeak of a small mouse tries to run, It takes me a fraction of a second to catch up. With my precision and power of flight.

I clasp and capture with my sharp claws its mine!

On my return home journey to my family

They call me the winner, We all perch on the same branch together Enjoying the taste of a well-earned dinner.

The wind swept silently through the trees, I was waiting, watching, wondering,

The night sky was covered with stars, and it was twilight

The connection of the moon and my eyes corresponded to each other.

The sparkling sounds of the breeze

Illuminated the silent night that was upon me

The aroma of something familiar struck me dead in my tracks

Something quiet something still something fast.

The sounds of the mouse in the distance were sudden

But sure,

I was waiting, watching, wondering when I should strike. I could feel it running hiding far away, I knew it could feel me too.

One two three...

I pounced I saw the mouse, I felt the mouse speeding through the woods

But I was faster much faster

Than any little mouse

Dead silence

I had done it

I had killed the little mouse

It felt like the whole world froze in dead silence.......

When the world goes dark

The owl wakes up when the night is near, He blinks his eyes and perks his ear, The forest slowly starts to appear, That’s just how an owls day goes.

He flies through the trees without a sound, Looking for things that move on the gound, He circles the sky in a steady round, That’s just how an owls day goes.

He sits on the branch high in the air, Turning his head to look everywhere, Watching the night in a serious stare, That’s just how an owls day goes.

When sunlight starts to creep into the sky, He finds a safe place where he can lie, He closes his eyes with a sleepy sigh. That’s just how an owls day goes.

Light

Swoosh

I glide down, As swift as the wind

And as Gentle as the breeze as fast as light

Suddenly, an abrupt thud Darkness for what feels Like etemity

Nothingness forever and ever until Light, finally

The beautifulness of light

My eyes open slowly and There lies a beautiful owl for what I can see

I call out twit twit Twit twit, I wait; but nothing.

But then out of the darkness she rises She floats away

Twit Twoo, Twit Twoo

White like a ghost, Glides through the black, In the shadows it lurks, Eyes twitch, Owl sees,

A mouse sitting among the green, Owl swoops through sleeping trees, Lands fast, Owl perches, Scanning the earth below, Owl floats down the night, Mouse is running, Owl speeds like a racing car, Dragging the wind behind, Mouse scurrys into hiding, Into a log he goes, Mouse looks through a hole, And into the jaws of death.

Ghost at My Window

She came to me one Christmas Eve, Soft as a cloud, a feathered dream. Eyes like an endless void And a beak like a question mark.

She stared into my eyes with her heart shaped face, But her head turned like a cog. Why would this ghostly ninja haunt me, A shadow silent and stealthy?

My heart beat inside, it was loud, but When I gazed again she was gone. A hunter swooping through the trees, her Talons ready and sharp as knives.

Again she came at the place, and time, she Was last night.

A moon up close, glimmering bright in her big Brother’s light.

Each night after it was her habit

To be with me on the star lit oak. Gliding near with wings as wide as galaxies

To share an hour or two.

As flowers bloomed and bees buzzed I looked for my friend, but There was no sight. A spirit of the night, vanished. The tree stood shadow-less, the night empty, And she left me to be lost.

I land on a post, My talons curl around it, Waiting, waiting, waiting for, The perfect moment, I miss it, Distracted by the Moon, Glistening, scaring the dark away, THEN

A bat Feather or Leather who will win

I land a strike and it is over, my supper acquired I wait for daylight and when the sun melts into the ground Again, and again until no more, I fly up.

Owls

Owls watch quiet night

Moonlight feathers soft wings

Hoots drift through trees

Eyes glow amber circles

Claws grip elderly branches

Silent flight surprise mice

Wide head turns slowly

Night air holds secret

Owls listen for rustles

Shadows move between leaves

Feathers brush cold leaves

Stars blink above forests

Patience fills dark nights

Hunting ends before dawn

Owls rest after flight

Barn Owl

I glide Below a Starlit Sky And see the Trees rushing By, Darkness Drills Into me

Bleeding secrets I quickly See, Up ahead Mice Filled With Dread, Running, Squeaking Before they’re Dead.

I am Owl

Protector of night

When I come round

Atmosphere fills with fright

I wonder around

Longing for a friend

Hoot

Hoot

But everything Must come to an end

Moon and sun

Dance with poise

Everything around them

Makes no noise

Afraid of what’s to come

But they only seek fun

Hootsifer

I am king of night

I am ruler of doom

I am leader of twilight

I am monarch of doom

My beak, sharp as a knife, My talons, chilling, cold as death

My wings hide in a feathery sheath

My eyes black like an endless void

I hunt and I search

I pray and I eat

I am fear and I am death

All in a few wing beats!

But I am lonely without a mate

I call a “twiiit”

I wait and wait for reply

But the fire inside is not lit

The Kill...

I glide and cut through the night’s dense blackness

The raging wind slipping over feather Slick, smooth, soft.

As I go for the kill the pathetically small Rodent tries to run from me

Me? The queen of the night. Run away? The miniscule animal is held down with my lethal talons I rip, I tear,

I snap the bone underneath my stoney glare, And the blood of my victim spatters the back of my throat

Hot and sweet, The breath of life

I swoop back into the air readying myself for the pleasure of the kill yet again

The

Owl

Night in the woods, Not a soul stirs, Except the Owl. He clasps his branch with craggy hands, Watching, Waiting.

Then, skittering, jittering, mouse runs by,

A flash of wings, Claws spread wide, Beak stretched to fullest bite, Silence once more. Back in his tree, He oversees his Kingdom of night, King supreme, With full dominion.

But, as sunlight cracks the night with its fiery beams, His might fails, And King of obscurity is no more. Dawn in the woods, Life is stirring, Except the Owl.

I wander as a lonely owl, Soaring silently over tall evergreen trees, In the dense trees I see A tiny mouse frolicking with much glee.

I wander as a lonely owl, Patiently swooping and waiting to see, If there is a tasty meal, Waiting for me.

I wander as a lonely owl, Flying by snow topped mountains, And through the foggy moonlight, I see a curious and sly fox, following me.

I wander as a lonely owl, Swooping past the derelict farmhouse, I follow the old winding dirt path, To my safe, cosy tree house home.

Messenger Owl

A letter to someone, his name is not clear, is tied to my leg with little good cheer.

I’m thrown to the sky’s, a banishment most welcome. I spread the broad fan of my wings open wide. The sky-bound freedom I know only too well clasps my feathered body in a tight hold telling me the way to success as it always does. I can soar

I can swoop I am free

A blur of feathers soaring through the moving trees, a blink then it’s gone, the nocturnal king of the night silently and swiftly moves its head to spy pray, a mouse lifted into the night, consumed into the sea of darkness.

The living trees sway and give way to the animal, the wind stops in its tracks as it swoops and sways and gracefully dances through the branches, the predator hears the beat of fear in a heart and dives into the bush, an incoming barrage of talons closing in, a flying pair of scimitars that’s all the pray get to see.

A wish

I stop and listen

Creep out of my den and watch the owls swiftly swoop around

And settle on a distant hill on the horizon

I wish I could be free and not be worried about predators I sit And smile

I admire them

I wish I could have long graceful wings and set off on a journey and never come back

I sit here every day and watch the owls in envy

I wish to be free I make a wish on a shooting star I wish I could be an owl.

My Owl Poem

I soar across the sky. I see the mouse leaping Rapidly in the thick Yellowing grass. The trees turned to stare As I dived. My bold, ferocious Eyes pierce the wind Silence... But I cannot rest I shall hunt and hunt until I die Again, again... And again.

I wait and I watch. I watch the Earth turn. I watch the trees grow. I watch the owls.
